Hey guys! What song would you like to learn how to solo on next?
ruclips.net/video/5bV4SnoqRlc/видео.html
Misty!
Rock WIth You by Michael Jackson
Black coffee: interested to hear how you analyse improvisation over two 7#9 chords a half step apart
cool jazz definitely, black coffee is one of my favorite standards
I can't get over how good Jeff can make the pentatonic scale sound
you can do it too my dude, just get practicing. if you out of ideas steal, steal, steal
Make excercizes/games to force yourself to think outside the box : I.e
force yourself to end on the b3, or the 5 of the scale
Try adding in a B9 to all your phrases (ALL OF THEM) until one works
@@louispearson8306 You are right b9 is the key to nice beboppy soloing
@@ganjarulez009 when used over the correct chord fo sure; i mean't to sort of pick at random though, keep exploring trying all of them
the pentatonic scale is the easiest scale to make sound good, i did it with the blues scale which is basically the same thing and i'm a noob
The pentatonic scale is definitely ESSENTIAL for all musicians learning to improvise!
Love this series. Looking forward to more
Hi Jeff! I've been a subscriber for some time now and have always enjoyed your videos. But, these recent videos you have been doing are AWESOME! This one and the one you did earlier (Isn't She Lovely) are just so useful and practical for the gigging musician. Your format is great - to the point, not too long, great examples, encouraging one's ear to be the guide, etc. You are on target with these videos! Can't thank you enough. Please keep these coming!
really helpful series!! thank you for taking the time!
O.M.G. I literally requested Just the two of us solo on the previous Isn't she lovely video. Thank you so so much Jeff, I learned a ton from the written solo. Love you
This is a cruise ship musician standard right here! Also, props to you Jeff for always making the pentatonic sound so soulful and hip.
It's a Very good lesson, I like the advice and the sound, & the demo solo too.
Hi Jeff , this is super helpful 😀, very clearly presented and inspirational for us beginning improvisers !👍
You really make it easy the way you teach it. I am able to feel and execute just by listening.
That's awesome to hear :)
I'm not at that point to this understand this level of music theory YET, but in clicking this video I just really wanted to hear Jeff solo over this song
Awesome man! This was super informative. Really enjoying implementing this theory!
Thanks very much im loving this new topic!!! Yippiiieeee
Please keep these up they are extremely useful x
Thanks. Perfect for one of my Duos "Just the 2 of Us" . This is our theme song.
That is an excellent shirt I need more of those styles, Jeff.
ive watch pretty much all guitar video tutorial here on youtube but so far, this is the easiest lesson for me to understand. subscribed!
Awesome, thank you!
love this series!
great job!
Love this
im annoyed whoever was the first to dislike.. As a music teacher i would rate this as one of the most cogent, clear introductions to improvising on you-tube
Great lesson!!
Great lesson Jeff, simple and effective. 👏😉
Hi Jeff! I am from Brasil. Thank you for the tips. Really helpfull this kind of video about improvisation concepts. Sorry for my english
Awesome!
Haha! I've been hearing that song at work and I was about to try to get a chart going for it because I'd love to have solo'd over it! What a coincidence!
thanks! very useful
this is a good lesson
OHHHH MYYYY. OUR PLEAD HAS BEEN FULFILLED
very very good got any more like that, sorry I kno it takes a lot to do such a thing but tried it and enjoyed it.thanx again
Amigo! thank you.. that's just amazing and you make it look so groovy and kind of influenced by the k.i.s.s. series (when in reality is not that simple to explain it like a pro -like you did)
Muy buen tutorial ,gracias
Nice presentation!!
Excelente!!!
thanks !
Thank you Sir.
Nice one Jeff!
Thanks, Jeff. I know this is a 2019 lesson but 2022 I just got an invitation to improvise on that tune, I didn't want to just copy Grover Washington Jr. solo.
Thank you!
ugh, this is so brilliant that it's sickening lol. can use this on "What You Won't Do For Love" too. too hip!
Are they the same chord changes?
@@joshg8222 pretty much, only that 2-5-1 leads you to the next verse
God damn it Jeff, I always get home from work and already have plans for the evening and then your stanky face shows up on youtube and makes me sit at the piano all night. anyway, pretty dope, thanks jeff!
Also, me sitting on the toilet listening to 7:03: "daaaaaamn"
nice! i always used to wonder how to solo on that 2-5-1 section
sdfbf you can also use the notes in each chord to solo. Either as arpeggios or using them to create a melody
@@thegiftedhandsmusic thank you. i'll try it!
This makes the Solo's For Standards "solo" make more sense to me now. It's be great if you linked any video's outside of the "Makin The Changes" course like this that apply to the content for easy reference.
a reharm series like what you did with versace on the floor plz ❤
Hi Jeff, do you have a new link to the backing track and PDF? for this. I realise this is 1 year old, but popped up on my feed this morning.. love it. Thanks from NZ
The reason why E natural works well in the F scale it is a leading tone.
Thanks for sharing your excellent ideas on this iconic song. Unfortunately the download link isn't working.
So cool, thanks Jeff, I just learned the Song, this video arrived just in Time for me. Will your masterclass from Thursday be available otherwise? It’s going to be 2am here when you start so I won’t be able to make it...
Even though I haven't used my stanky loops, I gotta say it is an honor having your music upon my library of sounds, thanks for your passion for music. I thought I was going to hear samples like these chord progressions such as Just the Two of Us... Many blessings bro keep doing what you're doing.
This is great but I still don't sound like Grover.
Could you please give me a clue what to play over the solos on Original Rays and/or Self Portrait?
Thanks for your videos.
Fun fact: @kazuki_isogai on Instagram got almost a couple hundred thousand followers posting improvisations over this progression. It’s very popular. Many of his posts are just videos of him playing this progression in different inversions, extensions, and slight changes
Dat vocal presence tho
Breakdown soloing over Misty maybe?
WOW !!!!
This is great

What a cheat!
was scrolling down for this XD
on C7 - Phrygian Dominant?
Nicely done
You can go along way with F harmonic minor scale. No?
I don't know if it's me, but you have a reduced presence on YT. Hope everything is going okay. Thanks for the video!!! Seems like I need to learn my pentatonic scales, *AGAIN*.
I think that's called being a new dad?
And not relaying exclusively on YT to earn revenues.
What piano sound or software are you using
yo jeff!
why are you playing on the keyboard and not on the saxophone?
Hey guys! I missed the online masterclass, unfortunately. Could someone help me out, please?
Sure, memorize all your major scales
Make a tutorial solo of all by myself by celine dion 🙂
SO why did you play an Eb scale over that Em7?
7 b9 b3 #5 b5 b6 b7
Over C7, can we also use arpeggios from F Harmonic Minor or from E Super Locrian?
Archon Rye the only issue I see with using the F harmonic minor is that the F would clash with the E in the C7. All the other notes work beautifully especially since you would get the #5 & b9 using that scale
@@thegiftedhandsmusic Can we use the F as a passing note (or a ghost or something that is played negligible) before E if we need emphasize C7?
@@ryanvergara3603 You could definitely use the F as a passing tone going to E. It fits into the D Major 7 chord (F acts as the major 3rd) that is played before you get to the C7
Spain
Dear Jeff, At 7:04 it looks like you play Ebm on the right hand but there is a passing chord Em on the left hand. Although everything sounds good shouldn't that be a problem? B/R
It’s by Grover Washington jr
Please cover this song with a gospel twist
Sokulunga Ryan Nkiwane great idea!
@7:30 say a little louder for the ones in the back lol
i looked up what key it was in and I got 4 different answers lol. D minor, Ddmajor, C sharp and
F minor. thanks google
RIP BILL.
First ex 0:26 2nd ex 3:56

Autumn leaves man
dropmemes there’s like nothing to explain for autumn leaves tho, it’s like the most straightforward that it gets
4:24 lmao, you know he jazzes coz he can shortcut
I love this song and hate it at the same time. It just gets so repetitive sometimes.
John Horne I tend to start loading it with secondary dominants to add some extra movement to the progressions
Thats confusing me..you say F dorian and Eb Dorian. But should it not be F äolian and Db Dorian?? Since you say its in Fm? So you could say F äolian, F HM, and F phrygian?
@@mbgmail5911 Hi. Is it realy only 10 Mounths since!? ok. I dont even now understands what i asked in the Question before. So now i would say:
Its in Db. You should see it like that:
Dbmj7 (Ij7), C7 Fm (V7(-Im)/IIIm), Ebm Ab Dbmj7 (IIm-V7/Im), C7 Fm (V7-IIIm). So there are one II-V-I Progressions in major (Ebm Ab7 Dbmj7), with the I-Tonic at the Beginning. The first C7 is a secondary Dominant leads to Fm (IIIm). Make that sense for you?
C7 is HM5 or altered, cause it ends in minor (Fm7). Thats all! I recomment "NewJazz" Oliver Prehn in YT. Its my Guru now.ioi
(don't think I didn't hear that B natural at :31)
Uh. Wut.
4 DJs have thumbs down.
Feels like cheating
