      Hey Glenn. Can I recommend getting a gauge to file your drags/rakers. It takes experience to get them right. The best and safest way is using a gauge. I don't use one but it takes experience and if they are not right your saw will not cut right. The gauge Cotontop3 used for the round file is sold with a raker file. When I started cutting I learned the hard way. Lucky to be alive to tell about it. Seek professional training. Check your state extension for training programs. After 40 years i still like running a saw.

      Sounds like a couple of real highly intelligent idiotic wate of life people.
      As the old doctor that lives next door to me says
      ( They should have kept the afterbirth and flush them down the toilet. Sounds like your a hard working wanting to learn and know how to do it.
      Personally, i use the silvey pro sharp chain sharpener..hand filing would take to long and not get the proper angles. Grind a chain, take the depth riders down the proper highth, and the type of saw and whats been done to it...I run a sthil 660,power tuned with either a 36 or 42 inch bar with a full comp chain when falling timber, or a skip tooth when bucking in the landing.

    Thanks for this. My dad was a cutter back in the late 70s thru the 80s and filed without one of those guages. We cut our last tree together in my front yard and then a month later, he passed. Needless to say, he would never let me file his saw, even at 35 yo. Anyway, he passed, i have his Husq 455 rancher. I have been intimidated to file the chain since he passed, because he always said if you dont know what your doing, you can hurt yourself. I just been buying a new chain and keeping the dull ones around since i knew they can be sharpened. He love cutting wood for heating his house. I enjoyed watching him work the saw. As bad as his health was, he seemed to lose 20 years everytime he cranked this sucker up. Anyway, thank you for the instructional video and for the moment, taking me back to some awesome memories i had with him.

      Why don't you try the Stihl/Pferd 2 in 1 chain sharpener? They have been getting excellent reviews.

    • @superdog1964
      @superdog1964 2 года назад +2

      @@petersaczko6192 They do work well, UNLESS you hit hard dirt or rocks. In my experience, the 2 in one can become an issue if that happens as it uses the tooth before it for leveling, height and angle and the sharpener tends to stick or not allow the file to work at the correct depth to create a good gullet if the teeth are at different heights from rock or dirt damage. The moral of this story is to always keep a regular hand file in your kit for days that rocks become magnets, Lol
      If used whenever you stop for a fuel and oil fill and the chain isn't damaged? the small amount of extra time spent will pay you back tenfold with easier and faster cuts and your lower back will still function the same way it did before you started. This theory applies to whatever sharpener you have. 2 or 3 file strokes per tooth each break can possibly save you an hour? Especially if you are cutting oak, sweet gum, locust or other hard woods

    Tim, you file just like my daddy did. All the actions , everything. If I turned off the sound it would have been days past, thank you.
    My dad was a master at filling. He never used a gauge as he used a file once. Every chain he got a new file.
    I like to hand file but I was sharpening some weeks close to 400 chains so hand was out. Daddy finally gave in to me grinding and was very satisfied. Thanks for your time, knowledge and bring back an old time memory

    Great video, One additional tip about a file is never drag a file back, (in a sawing motion ) the file is designed to just cut in one direction , If you drag it back it flattens the cutters on the file and ruins it. Thanks Bp .

    I've got the same sharpener system. I realise now why my saw cut better after i sharpened it for the first time. Never thot a hand sharpen would be better than a new chain but I agree it is. I have only sharpened my chain one time because I just use it around the house but that file system is certainly worth what i paid for it. Thank for sharing.

    I spent many years running and sharpening chainsaws when working for the state Highway dept in Illinois. We had old Homelite Super XL models back in the day. They run a really rich oil mixture and had no anti-vibe technology at all, they also were LOUD! You went home at night smelling like 2 stroke exhaust with numb hands and partially deaf! It was a fun time for sure. Learned lots of things to do and not to do

    Your video made me think of schoolshop days-learned to sharpen from the instructor there.Circular saw blades.From 7" to 18".The angle you use is the same as for the saw blades.except ripsaw blades-those you file the teeth straight across.The teacher said for circular ripsaws-"chisels on a wheel"Then sharpened the same way years later at a tool repair place.No chainsaws--customers there bought new chains rather than have the dull ones sharpned-like the circular saws you should get several sharpenings from a blade or chain before its worn out.GREAT little video-nice refresher course!Now I should look for a saw and sharpen it!

  • @grahamgaming7688
    @grahamgaming7688 4 года назад +6

    The drags are actually a depth gauge. You hit em too hard with the file and your saw tries to cut too deep, that’s where you get the “jump” of the saw. I hit mine every 3 sharpenings. If you don’t file them, your saw can be sharp as hell but it won’t bite into the wood.

    I cannot play a guitar, but I sure can play a chainsaw. One of my favorite things is to make that machine sing. Ever find yourself listening to a neighbor run a saw and think, "they don't know how to run that saw" or "that chain must be dull as can be" or" they know what they are doing with that saw". Out in the country, I know of a little old lady, 85 years old, who still cuts her own firewood; sometimes while sitting in my treestand I think to myself, "She puts me to shame on a saw." Go on out and make your saw sing to you Tim and thanks for the videos.

    Easy field vice - 6" C- clamp. Weld 2 tapered tines to the back so you can drive it into a stump. HATE all of the new "reduced kickback" ramp raker chain. Glad I picked up a couple reels of the older straight raker chain when we were doing firewood in the 80's. That Husky runs clean compared to my vintage Homelite 360 Pros. Even running modern oils they drive the bugs away...

    I have tried for years and never could get the chain sharpened correctly. But on the up side I could cut great curves in anything, as the saw would tend to want to go in a circle as it cut. But never really used a saw till the last few months. Can tune one and break one down and build it back up but just now getting to the point where I can put a nice edge on one. New subscriber here. Awesome video. Learned I’ve been doing it wrong for a long time. I was wondering why mine pulled to the left lol. Now I know. Keep up the good work man.

    I’ve been sharpening for years. But I watch these videos when they pop up, because I am always ready to learn something new. But when I cut I will touch up the blade with a pass or two after every tank. And I usually give one or two passes to the rackers every three or four sharpens

    Awesome video Tim and thanks for sharing some of your chainsaw wisdom on sharpening the chain. I've been following letsdig18 for quite a while and that's how I found you.

    The 2 cycle oil that smells the best to me is Klotz R50. It is for kart racing engines

    Thank you! Would you say your chains are sharper than when you bought them new?

    Great video as always 👍, I've found brake cleaner or carb cleaner on the file in the field leaves the file good as new ,just a quick shot is all it takes

    The raker gauge I use takes it down to .025 below the two opposing cutting teeth.
