The nice thing about this channel is that they don't over exaggerate or make stuff up to sell cameras. They give you the facts simple and straight and let you make a decision for yourself. Which is pretty damn refreshing.
When I had a dust/oil issue with my D600, I took it directly to Nikon, rather than to the point of purchase, so the store never knew about the issue, so saying that you had zero complains isn't the whole story. Saying that, I'm still very happy with my D600, it takes amazing photos and is a joy to shoot with. Great video by the way, I nearly lost it when I saw the plunger.
I have a D600 bought from The Camera store and had MAJOR dust/oil issues with it and the problem is real. Now I know how to clean my sensor and never wanted to be without my camera so I never complained to the store because other than them cleaning the sensor themselves I never figured anything would come of it and just lived with it for the year. I will say now that after about 15 000 shots on it the issue has settled down and it's not near as bad as it was but I still clean my sensor more regularly than I've had to in the past with other cameras. So I guess Chris is right when he say's they never heard anything about it if no one complained but who wanted to be without their camera when cleaning it is a fairly easy process.. Not a cheap one though, I think I've spent over $250 in the last year on cleaning swabs, and an Arctic Butterfly and other odds and ends to clean it with.... :/
Interesting why *SO* many people said they had an issue and he seemed to glaze over it. I shot a D7000 for over a year before I got my D600. _Never_ cleaned my D7000 sensor and there are a few spots I clean up in post. I had my D600 for 6 months and the amount of foreign matter on the sensor was astounding! I would not even shoot beyond f13 because the 100+ spots would be hugely evident. Shooting more open would make the spots less apparent. I waited until 4-5 days before my warranty expired and sent it in to Nikon, making a point about the prominent spots. They cleaned it under warranty no problem. Curious thing was when I looked at the paperwork when It came back, one of the items listed was, _replaced shutter mechanism_. No explanation.
Marc Briggs BH Photo also told me they had never heard of any such issue when I returned my first one. "Dust? Nah..never heard of it. All cameras get dust!" "But my D90 didn't show a single spec of dust after 4 years of severe shooting". "well, I can't tell you anything besides there are no issues".
Do you guys foresee consumer handycamcorder type of 4K camcorders to be released soon? If so, how much would it be? Even though AX1 is advertised as a "consumer" model, it is not IMO with its size and price. I cannot take this to a restaurant for instance to film a family gathering for instance.
What's the point of continuous quiet mode when proper use of quiet mode requires you to hit the shutter and then release once it can be muffled or removed from the scene?
Ahahaha... the oil squirting and the plunger spoof was too awesome. Do you have one about the SB900 over-heating and always shutting down... because that's easy to duplicate.
Great review on the D610. Fortunately I waited before buying, and wasn't sure if the $600 savings of a refurb D600 was worth the headache. I'm likely to get the 610 and be done with it. Did anyone else get lost when they started talking about 4K codecs and such? That may have been better served as a separate post.
Well, Nikon certainly felt I needed a D610, because the sent me one free in exchange for my oil spot prone D600. The difference was dramatic, no question, perhaps the serial number range didn't hit your store, but not an exaggeration, not in my experience, and I still use and love the D610, and clean it in normal cycle like my other cameras. .
Pretty informative bit about the 4k video recording. Since my monitor only goes up to 1080p though I wasn't able to see how high the quality gets. But awesome stuff either way.
Wow, even better image quality than 1080p. Sales pitches used to say, "quality so good, it's like you're there." Soon they'll have to say, "quality so good, it's like you're not there." ;)
I had dust issues and I eventually sold the camera because AWB was driving me nuts with too much yellow that was hard to get rid of in post. I now have a D800 and it is just fine. Nikon screwed up on the D600. It doesn't do Nikon any good to let them off the hook on this..
I like the look of this AX1 4K footage at my 27" iMac. Just great! I sounds like it was not easy for you guys to get the shots done, but I like what I see and hear.
Chris, I was actually laughing out loud at the oil skit. That was Saturday Night Live material. Thanks for another great review. I hope you do a review of the production Df when it is released. I know you did one using D4 images, but that was a little on the strange side, like taking mefloquine. Best to you.
Is anyone else seeing just a tad bit of CA on the highlights from the new camera? I saw it most prominently in the catchlight in Chris' eyes in the beginning (where he's sitting down talking to the camera) and then on the blinds behind Jordan's head when they're both sitting there. It's minor and unless you know what you're looking for, you probably didn't see it. Perhaps we still have a bit of a ways to go before we get perfect 4K. Everything else in the image was positively amazing-looking though...details were sharp, colors were vivid but not overdone and dynamic range was decent. Overall, I am looking forward to 4K content, finally! :) I really like to hear Jordan's impressions/reviews, please have him reviewing more cameras from a video viewpoint.
You know their is a claim that additional 9 min upgrade in video recording time. (20 to 29 Min.) I am currently in the market for this camera. As someone who never owned the D600 should I but the D600 at a possible discount or go for the D610?
I bought my D600 and within the first 100 shots I had an enormous amount of oil/dust on my sensor. I sent it to Nikon, they replaced the shutter and sensor and yet the problem was never fixed. now my D600 is going back to Nikon for the 2nd time and this time they are replacing it with the D610... yay
I own a D600, I love this video. I've never had a single problem with oil or dust, however I bought a Sony A7iii and it is a dust magnet. I had to clean the sensor every time I used it.
I got D600 four months ago from B&H and wanted to confirm that the oil/dust spot issue are obvious! Nikon was way ignorant/arrogant about the issue when I contacted them. I used to be someone that didn't believe people complaining about issue and how poor Nikon service is; yet now I experience it! Any comments are welcomed.
To be honest, I think the FS700 footage is far better and perhaps more flattering too. I don't know about Canada, but the AX1 is positioned in the consumer market here in Japan and that always makes me wary as to what features they decided not to add. As for the Z100, the XAVC-S codec will be added soon according to Sony, so I think that the eventual practicality lies squarely with the Z100 not the AX1.
You can marginalize the D600 oil/dust issues all you want, but the fact is that you sell cameras and have to keep your relationship with Nikon on good terms. My D600 had severe issues so I returned it. The second one had issues too- this is after 197 shutter clicks on a new $2000 camera: www.flickr.com/photos/coogie/8195008528/lightbox/ I could have sent it back again, but decided to send it to Nikon for a repair. Camera came back clean, the issue returned. I've cleaned it dozens of times and it still comes back and I've sent it back yet again. Meanwhile, Nikon never admitted fault, never offered a real solution, and instead came out with the D610 and destroyed any resell value of the D600 . I like your videos, but please don't make it sound as if we are overblowing the issue.
Well enough people complained I guess for Nikon to bluntly come out with a new model with a different shutter mechanism. I have a feeling Nikon dodged a bullet on this one and hopefully people will forgive Nikon this "horrible" mistake! ;)
I have had problems with grease spots on both my d7000 and my d800. I don't know how this compares with the D600, but I hope Nikon fixes this problem in the future. After paying so much money for a great camera, only to have this problem, it's such a shame.
This is the firm handling the class action lawsuit against Nikon re. D600 www.zimmreed.com/Nikon-D600-Spot-Issue/64550/ Leave them your details online and they will get back with you for a free case evaluation
I had oil and dust issues on my D600. It showed up when I made a timelapse, which you can go and see for yourself on my uploads page. If I stopped down I got shitty dirty images. However Nikon replaced the shutter for me at no charge. The issue is real.
I would rather see the video camera you are talking about than see footage from it especially through youtube. Both would be best, but I have no idea what the camera looks like, so even if I wanted to run out & buy one, I would not know what it looked like.
Great stuff guys. My favorite photography channel. I think the whole dust/oil thing is like bigfoot, much talked about, but rarely, if ever, glimpsed in person.
Yes. The oil spots ARE REAL! Trust me. I've had to deal with them too. We aren't making it up. I just got mine back yesterday. We'll see how it works out.
Update. The spots are back. Sending it once again to Nikon for cleaning. Yes, These spot are a minor problem. Unless, of course you are the one experiencing them.
Well I just got one 2 months ago, thinking the sensor issue would be resolved but guess what the sensor is splattered is crap after just 700 shots, guess its so cold in Canada the oil run just coagulates and don't splatter ha! Gotta say I think getting a D610 would be a wise move, guess your shop has plenty of stock of D600's.
We had some customers with oil on there sensors. Nikon will solve these problems in 1 week for you when you contact them. (Also I myself had oil on it. Seen at pictures taken on very sunny days. Maybe a production line was bugged with this stuff.
I also own a d600 :( Cleaning sensor every several thousand clicks isn't really fun. And that's why I've stopped making time lapse. I've also stopped shooting over f/13. Shoot at f/22 only if this is a masterpiece since you will spend at least 10 min to clean the oil spots. Nikon don't admit there is a problem and don't offer help. I'm really disappointed with Nikon. It's good I don't have too many nikon mount lenses, when I get tired with cleaning sensor I'll probably switch to Canon.
I cannot begin to tell you that after 2 years of returns, repairs, cleaning, 3 cameras later, and now the D610 release- I have had it with Nikon not OWNING the problem. If I was a lawyer I would have filed a class action lawsuit months ago. The problem is so widespread and yet dealers and Nikon act like you are a whiner who should learn to keep your camera cleaner. They continue to downplay the situation to this day. I had to request for return shipping labels even after the 3rd camera. A problem this big should have a response from Nikon that respects the customer, not downplays the issue time and time again. Coming out with camera model that changes model number without changing features in a way that warrants the change to begin with is very obvious the D600 oil dust spot stigma had reached a point where they probably were not selling D600 anymore. They have no problem denying there is a problem, but replacing the camera model with minor updates to new model, is a mixed message- to say the least. Nikon, your public image and trust as a company and how you handle support issues has now been lost. I believe there is still time for you to correct the issue in a way that honors your customers and maybe let all the shooters who moved to Canon over this issue.
Chris, now that you're in 4k does that mean you're going to start wearing makeup? The resolution is frightening. I've never seen such hi-res youtube videos before.
The D610 is not the up-date of D600. The D610 is the replacement of the D600. The D600 is out of production. The D600 is the D610 with better weather sealing and and with better shutter. The sensor is GREAT: same sensor in both cameras.

This time Nikon agreed to look at it. 2 weeks later I got it back with a cleaning. 300 shots later, it was full of dust again. I needed the camera so I kept cleaning it myself out of pocket until it was just too much so I sent it in again. This time they changed the shutter and once again after 300 shots, the spots are back. Meanwhile my 5 year old D90 has never had a cleaning and is spotless.

BTW, when I said "handycamcorder type", I was referring to something like Sony HDR-SR7.
What's the point of continuous quiet mode when proper use of quiet mode requires you to hit the shutter and then release once it can be muffled or removed from the scene?
Great video as always. The reverb in the "couch" section got to me after a while though.

Does the 610 record in 60fps?
Is anyone else seeing just a tad bit of CA on the highlights from the new camera? My guess is the problem wasn't the sensor or the shutter, but actually the mirror assembly. But Nikon never openly admitted it.
Thanks for Comparison!! I don't see any of my D600 oil or dust issues images and so far so good!!
I have had my D600 for several months now and I haven't had an oil issue myself. The camera is excellent in my opinion.
There's more oil on your head than the d600..
Great episode, thanks.
I own a D600, I love this video. I've never had a single problem with oil or dust, however I bought a Sony A7iii and it is a dust magnet. I had to clean the sensor every time I used it.
fantastic quality image in 4k i would be so happy to have next videos in 4 k too in 2014. keep up good work anyway
I really love your personality chris! Awesome humour in this one as well. :)

You're "spot on" (no pun intended...). The D600 is great.
They should have named this camera as Nikon D600f (the F is for "fixed"), and you can rename the orginal D600 to Nikon D600b (The b is for "Broken").
Great stuff guys. My favorite photography channel.

Why exactly did you film this in green screen and then put someone's kitchen in the background?
We had some customers with oil on there sensors. Nikon will solve these problems in 1 week for you when you contact them. (Also I myself had oil on it. Seen at pictures taken on very sunny days. Maybe a production line was bugged with this stuff.

Chris, now that you're in 4k does that mean you're going to start wearing makeup? The resolution is frightening. I've never seen such hi-res youtube videos before.
I don't think he needs to. I mean, there aren't any real blemishes on his face.
Loved the oil humor, subscribed!
that oil shooting out was hilarious

the skit about the oil LOLLLLL
360p
Shoot long exposures at night with my D600 and there are more oil spots than there are stars.
Had oil on my d600 sensor 2x best buy hand it a d610 to me on the spot, though im worried a but it on the new camera.
I cant wait until we can buy 4k video tvs on waltmart for 500 bucks! and btw, i bought a nikon d600, and the oil issue was pretty bad :/
great
Nikon is famous for fixing problems. That's one of the things that make them a good company.
That's what I used to think too...My camera has been replaced or cleaned officially 3 times now and I've cleaned it dozens of time and the oil and dust keep coming after 15k shutter clicks. It never goes away. Nikon's "fix" was the D610.
Arie M They keep fixing it, right? Maybe there's a permanent fix next time.
Not many people seem to have such a big problem as you unfortunately seem to have.
Stikibits No stickbits. They keep giving the runaround. The first step to fixing a problem is acknowledging there is a problem. Nikon never did. The first time they denied it and refused to look at it so I returned it. The replacement I got had the same problem. Meanwhile my 5 year old D90 has never had a cleaning and is spotless.
like the overheating flash? Waiting for the warranty period being over and then releasing a new one?
If 'ignore the problem, screw your customers and some time later release a new version' is fixing for you, fine. I call it fraud, deceit, cheating....
LOL! Loving my D600!
you two make a nice couple.... gack!!! I just threw up.
