I was told by my parents that my dad started me on horse back riding when I was 4 years old. Over the years I've broken wild horses, riding green broke horses, training some horses and riding and working with horses now for some 45 years. I never used spurs and never needed them.

You just brought back some memories. We would have to bring some heavy old handmade chairs into the house while visiting and the legs had divot marks all over the legs. Us kids were told that they were bear chew marks from short bears. Handholds for rattle snakes to climb them. All kinds of stuff. Come to find out they were rowel marks made by the hands when they sat at the table. One of the things in which that older generation still took for granted and thought funny we didn't know rowel marks when we saw them. Remember take your spurs off when you enter a house!

A common leather dye at the time was tobacco. Soak a twist ( about 1 box of regular snuff) in alcohol for a week pour through a coffee filter and wear gloves latex or rubber as nicotine is a potent poison add salt or alum as a mordant. Using gloves and a swap apply it to a piece of leather. If need be thin with alcohol. When happy with the dry color, apply to your piece and oil or use a leather finish to your work.
