    The sticker you put on the back of the screen is meant to go on the silver back of the screen first and then you lay the ribbon cable on top of it. The sticker is a barrier to protect the wires/ribbon from shorting out by touching the metal on the back of the screen. You should remove the film and re apply it in the back of the screen than use some scotch tape or something like that to keep the ribbon cable in place :) but great job man the video was fun to watch and I love watching these when I’m tinkering on my gameboys to pass the time.

    • @akina309
      @akina309  Год назад +14

      I've honestly seen conflicting arguments for this, the official documentation has the cable under the film, but i've also seen some comments and some other people say it's fine the way it is. I do intend to go back and clean that up though!

      @@akina309if it was meant to go over the cables then why would you also have the black padded insulation? I don't know what "official documentation" you're reading but the clear insulation is definitely meant to go under the ribbon cables, not on top of them. Other than that you absolutely nailed this build and the end result is amazing. Great job!

I also love the commentary during the video kind of walking us through what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. We get to see the struggles you face in real time, which is really cool. "Still gotta buy batteries....."
    Me remembering watching my dad recharge his NiCd D type batteries for his stereo in the 90s 😑
    Bruh, rechargeable batteries didn't pop out of nowhere when lithium ion became viable.
    They have been a popular thing since the lead acid battery came into use in cars.
    For years before custom shaped lithium ion packs with built in chargers came on the scene people were using NiCd (nickel cadmium) and NiMH (nickel metal hydride) rechargeable AA, AAA, C and D form batteries.
    They just used external chargers instead, and often kept charged spares around as replacements for when the ones in your walkman, gameboy etc ran dry.
    It's not a million miles from people using "power packs" today for when their battery runs dry.

    I honestly prefer standard cell batteries and wish more devices would use them. They have standard sizes, they are inexpensive, you can always buy them, and they are made to be easily swapped out. You can buy rechargeable ones. For devices with built-in lithium ion batteries, it's an extra thing you have to consider for their preservation, because they will self discharge over time and you need to maintain them above critical voltage. That little battery pack is pretty cool though since you can just drop it in.

  • @Eythor20
    @Eythor20 5 месяцев назад +1

    Hot take.. i hate the lithium batteries. After 10-15 years when the battery is dead there is no guarentee there will be a vendor making them. But AA’s will definitely be available.

    • @akina309
      @akina309  5 месяцев назад +1

      you know, i don't blame you, once they wear out they're trash and support is questionable. That's why i like this one though - it's not locked in there! it just uses the existing battery contacts, so if it were to stop working one day, I could easily remove it and replace it with AAs.

    I prefer the front lit GBA SP to the backlit one. The backlit one is to bright and hurts my eyes. Even on my Nintendo Switch in handheld mode or my 3DS or even my phone, I turn the brightness down relatively low because my eyes are a little bit sensitive to brightness. So AGS 001 is better for me then AGS101 even though the 101 is technically better for most people.

    • @akina309
      @akina309  Год назад

    • @akina309
      @akina309  Год назад

      Laminated screens are typically a bit more expensive, and they're shaped differently from the standard GBA screen lens, so you need a *different* kind of bespoke aftermarket shell to fit them in. Not to mention, I was doing a USB-C battery mod, and I wanted a cover for the battery that was color matching with the plug cutout, and the colors for the lamiated screen-ready shells didn't really match the USB-C friendly covers well.
      At the end of the day, part availability and cost is all. If you wanna go for the laminated method, those are awesome too!
