I like the fact they put Hard Corps stages in it. It's like having the best of both worlds in all honesty, and I'd rather have gigantic, hardware- pushing bosses than some boring and tedious mode 7 stages. I will agree, they could have sort of edited the graphics of the Hard Corps to take advantage of the GBA's colour palette and so they'd fit in better.
much agreed, the 2nd top down stage in alien wars is quite the challenge, what makes it worse is to see the true ending you have to beat the game in hard mode..the issue here is the quicksand stuff in the boss segment can give anyone a headache. You're constantly spinning in circles and can barely even hit the boss.
Maybe the color palette's because original gba's didn't have a backlight and would be very dark. I'm curious to get this and see how my theory holds up. (That, and I love both Alien Wars and Hard Corps)
the second hard corps stage is strange though you're fighting deadeye joe and colonel bahamut for seemingly no reason. yeah they removed bahamuts human form but they didnt remove his pained mutation between the first and second phases
A fusion of Contra 3 the Alien Wars for Snes and Contra Hardcorps for the Genesis... I have played and enjoyed both but I only ever owned Contra Hardcorps... Nice hybrid of a game indeed.
Eh, I don't think music can be outdated. Graphics - easily can, but music lives of its arrangements, which, like the graphics, actually depend on composer and system itself.
WizzyWhipitWonderful I really want to see that nostalgic Black and Yellow logo coming back :"p or at least the decent Red Logo when they still launched very good games. Todays they killed almost everything, I remember they were able to launch a load of games for NES or the MSX. Maybe that it's not posible for today, but well... You know... At least launch something that is more worth than PES doesnt?
they killed off lance after contra shattered soldier, so we can handle bill being in another big contra game in the future, as long as konami gets their heads out of their asses about metal gear survive
Weird that the music keeps playing after the boss dies. I always thought that was a nice effect in C3 when things get quiet and you relax, listening to the explosions while the boss writhes in agony.
@João Emanuel It's no use friend. Sega fanboys will always behave like a betrayed wife. The genesis' grudge for being crushed by the SNES is and will be eternal.
Snes seemed more like targeted towards young audience, but mega drive was targeted towards much mature audience. SNWS is good but I personally like mega drive more.
This game was so frustrating!! I remember when it came out(2002), I had been a fan of Hard Corps and Super C, but I hadn't played III yet so I had no frame of reference or knowledge that this was just a shoddy port. It seemed very "off". The graphics were inconsistent across stages, the lack of bombs and multiple weapons, and the game was unnecessarily tough. Probably the worst portable Contra, but about a decade later when I got a DS, Contra 4 BLEW me away!!!
No bombs, can't hold two weapons, stage 2 is from Contra: Hard Corps, no missiles after stage 3 mid-boss (or during mid-boss's climb), stage 5 is also from Contra: Hard Corps, all of the top-down stages are missing, the last stage's slowdown is ridiculous... ...oh, and the music blows.
+Dick Socrates Fun little observation for me too, on stage 2 it uses a flicker effect for several of the projectiles to simulate transparency...while using actual transparency everywhere else :\
No sé que piensen ustedes, pero el movimiento tan fluido de varios enemigos de este juego de Contra (sobretodo los mini jefes y algunos jefes), siempre me dió cosa
@delsol01 That is very true. Though this game came out in 2002 so it is most likely Konami did not have experience with programming with the GBA yet. This was most likely one of their first titles and was probably quickly put together.
for a genesis player this was hard to watch........ but the boss transitions where nice and the blend between the gen and nes levels was a decent switch!
There is a way this game could have been better. - Use the classic top-down stages instead of using stages from Hard Corps - Use the original music - Hold two weapons - Use bombs - Use spin shot For the extra abilities, there are definitely ways you can switch weapons, use bombs, and spin shoot, with this layout. D-Pad - Move and aim B - Shoot A - Jump L - Switch weapon R - Lock L+R - Spin shot Select - Bomb Start - Pause Oh, and for the top-down stages... D-Pad - Move and aim B - Shoot A - Duck L - Switch weapons R - Bombs L+R - Spin shot L + Left on d-pad - Turn camera left L + Double tap left - Turn camera left fast L + Right - Turn camera right L + Double tap right - Turn camera right fast Select - Nothing Start - Pause There we go.
Why would they butcher both Contra Spirits and Contra: Hard Corps and make this bizarre Frankenstein of a game? Looks like they took out the coolest parts of both (top down stages from Spirits and branching story/multiple characters from Hard Corps).
The music off here sounds like it's off the Game Boy Color or NES/Famicom. The GBA port for Zelda A Link to the Past has it's music sound still great, so why is it not the case for other gba ports of other snes games?
I know this isn't canon but, seeing on level 5 , how the final boss theme (hard corps) or the regular boss theme doesn't play for the boss makes me think if Bill and Lance were in this situation they wouldn't even see this as a huge threat which in my opinion makes them seem more badass... I'm not making sense, I'm not good at expressing ideas
I think this version isn't that bad at all, but not very good executed at all. The think that really affected the game was the lose of the Second weapon (Bomb no so much... you can't lie, you barely use it). And well for everything else the game is very very good ported actually, also GBA sound was NEVER good, and almost every early game sound bad. Overall a 6.5 in the best objetive form. Overall a 7 in my opinion.
chuckobscure Yeah, but it feels weird at times, still very good version to play actually, I pretty much love everything that says ''Contra'' (Except the PSX and SAT games... they stink)
I wonder if someone has or is willing to mod Contra 3 to replace the mode 7 levels and recreate this experience. I'm not sure how hard it is to replace two levels, but if I knew anything about that kind of thing, I'd try doing it myself.
Considering the limitation of the GBA, this is not a bad port. Of course a few things had to be taken out, scaled back and such but a decent effort at least.
Wow KONAMI did an awful job porting this to gameboy. It has Slowdown with less bullet and enemies on screen than the SNES version. If i have to name a game that pushes GBA hardware to limits is Gunstar Super Heroes. So many explosions, bullets, enemies WITH NO SLOWDOWN ever.
Yeah man I know. And the cherry on top of the cake is that Konamy hired Treasure to develop a Konami game that turned out to be the the best of the series hahaha xD (Talking about gradius 5,, obviously is my Opinion but Gradius Gaiden is also good)
The Contra Horps Stages feel unfitting to the Contra 3 setting. Though at least I'm glad they replaced that godawful, 'Alien Nest' boss for stage 5, I hate fighting it because it always spun me around.
Konami has done a way better job before with Castlevania COTM (which has a really kick ass soundtrack). A shame they didn't put the same effort in this port.
when the DS came out I expected more SNES remakes on it since it has the same buttons and it could sound better than the GBA remakes but they never did, I am very upset because of that.
@NeoJames82 if programmed correctly, the graphics produced on the gba could surpass that of the super nes and the sound quality could match the snes. take castlevania circle of the moon for example on sound quality, or for the best of both, the golden sun series. the pokemon games had good graphics and bgms as well. it all depends on the programmers.
So the difference between the SNES version with this is that they replaced the top view stages (2 and 5) for regular sidescrolling stages right? Guess that the GBA cant handle the rotation effect from the original stage 2 and 5 ???
I like the fact they put Hard Corps stages in it. It's like having the best of both worlds in all honesty, and I'd rather have gigantic, hardware- pushing bosses than some boring and tedious mode 7 stages. I will agree, they could have sort of edited the graphics of the Hard Corps to take advantage of the GBA's colour palette and so they'd fit in better.

You're constantly spinning in circles and can barely even hit the boss.
They had no choice. Those stages were hard to do. At the same time glad they got rid of it. Never liked those stages.
Maybe the color palette's because original gba's didn't have a backlight and would be very dark. I'm curious to get this and see how my theory holds up. (That, and I love both Alien Wars and Hard Corps)
Lol f ck off. Mode 7 stages are way better than the mediocre hardcorp stages that were forced into this awful "remake". Deal with it.
the second hard corps stage is strange though
you're fighting deadeye joe and colonel bahamut for seemingly no reason.
yeah they removed bahamuts human form but they didnt remove his pained mutation between the first and second phases
Contra 3: The hard corps Advance
I never noticed that til i played contra hard corps. I gotta tell ya that game was crazy hard when i first played it
Advance Ex
In Japan is called Contra Hard Spirits, which is a combination of Contra Hard Corps and Contra Spirits (the name of Contra III in Japan)
It sounds like they made all the music in this game with the car instrument from Mario Paint.
lolol
Old music is way better
I'd rather snes version.
😂🤣
So true
Even though I never had a chance to play this, it still gave me chills.
A fusion of Contra 3 the Alien Wars for Snes and Contra Hardcorps for the Genesis... I have played and enjoyed both but I only ever owned Contra Hardcorps... Nice hybrid of a game indeed.
Ur mom is hybrid
Childlike happiness watching this, thank you so much kind sir. Good ol' times
The music of this version sounds like my 13 years old motorola cellphone :P
LOL
+MLG SkrubLord
Almost every early GBA game dont have good sound, is common.
*****
Metroid Fusion OST
In most cases the sound is good on the original system. A bit pointless to judge it with emulation.
Eh, I don't think music can be outdated.
Graphics - easily can, but music lives of its arrangements, which, like the graphics, actually depend on composer and system itself.
So, Contra 3 meets Hard Corps?
Would've been nice to see Bill and Lance team up with the Hard Corps members in a new Contra game....
Konami seriously needs a clean of the face with new CEOs
+MetalSonicodraco7342 I totally agree. They have a LOT of staple IPs that they arent acknowledging.
WizzyWhipitWonderful
I really want to see that nostalgic Black and Yellow logo coming back :"p or at least the decent Red Logo when they still launched very good games.
Todays they killed almost everything, I remember they were able to launch a load of games for NES or the MSX.

they killed off lance after contra shattered soldier, so we can handle bill being in another big contra game in the future, as long as konami gets their heads out of their asses about metal gear survive
Stylez_Gaming Even Bill died now
Bill's death scream in the SNES version was the death scream of the hanging enemies in the motorcycle stage. I dunno why they switched it around.
no gtr attacks music why
NeoJusteBelmont I'm trying to fix that in a Hack ROM. As well restoring the SNES and Genesis colors, also aiming for a Probotector Advance patch.
Gotta love how 80% of the game is bosses.
Looks like a very decent port! And great gameplay as well, like always.
Weird that the music keeps playing after the boss dies. I always thought that was a nice effect in C3 when things get quiet and you relax, listening to the explosions while the boss writhes in agony.
Sounds like Bill entered the future (Hard Corps) twice while fighting through the Alien Wars...
20:00 that's some cool effect for a GBA
Megadrive/Genesis did it first. (Contra Hard Corps)
@João Emanuel It's no use friend. Sega fanboys will always behave like a betrayed wife. The genesis' grudge for being crushed by the SNES is and will be eternal.
Snes seemed more like targeted towards young audience, but mega drive was targeted towards much mature audience. SNWS is good but I personally like mega drive more.
es un juego estupendo me hizo recordar viejos tiempos felicitaciones a los creadores
"Holds L and R"
2:37
this made me smile x]
IM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO DID THAT?!
Lol
It does nothing.
@@twinmillario1452it makes it seem more badass
i came here for the music
I enjoy this game very much
This is game is awesome with the musics too
Hope this game still available in 2017 :(
This game was so frustrating!!
I enjoyed this port alot. Was hard at first and I kept dying over and over to Level 4, once i passed it though I was so happy 😅
+OuroborosChoked agreed! Anyway the original mode 7 levels are boring.
P. H. G. F. Very true. Just noting the differences, though.
+OuroborosChoked I think having 2 stages from Hard Corps with Bill Rizer in the game is pretty cool.
+Dick Socrates Fun little observation for me too, on stage 2 it uses a flicker effect for several of the projectiles to simulate transparency...while using actual transparency everywhere else :\
+OuroborosChoked so is it not good?
Sound may suck but at least they got rid of those damn top down levels...
lol! i feel your pain, dude, but come on, that's a fundamental part of contra.
Skill issue
Contra and Super C remain my favorite. I still can't beat them without dying once.
Honestly, it's not that bad. I like how they threw in the levels from contra Hard Corps
idea is cool, but it didn"t well executed.
To bad the butchered the hardcorps levels, and theyre very out of place with the rest of the game
No sé que piensen ustedes, pero el movimiento tan fluido de varios enemigos de este juego de Contra (sobretodo los mini jefes y algunos jefes), siempre me dió cosa
I would've loved another Contra game like Shattered Solider with all of the characters from Contra:Hard Corps.
So this how it ends. Looking back, never had the chance to finish this before.
despues de 8 años finalmente me pregunte:
en lugar de pasar todo el lio de los niveles no hubiera sido mejor llevar a bill directamente al hoyo
La lógica de los videojuegos :v
Homing Missles is the best CONTRA weapon, 2nd&3rd are the SPREAD SHOT&FLAME THROWER.
The sound is better on the SNES
So, we should play on Normal mode, huh? Because I played on Easy, and I only played 1-4 stages, the stage 5 and stage 6 was not appeared in the game.
5:56 Now that is a boss intro that is as cool as it makes you think "WTF"
A Giant robot casually runs past the train keeping up pase.
that boss is ripped off from contra hard corps.
Nah this boss looked way better on genesis, it had more frames of animation , including the train tilting. The GBA version is a poor recreation of it
@delsol01 That is very true. Though this game came out in 2002 so it is most likely Konami did not have experience with programming with the GBA yet. This was most likely one of their first titles and was probably quickly put together.
Deberían bacer muchos videos como este tipo de video Game Boy Advance Longplay [036] Contra Advance: The Alien Wars EX - RUclips - Google Chrome.
Is this a mash up of hard corps and alien wars? if anyone hasn't played operation c on the gb, you won't be disappointed!
for a genesis player this was hard to watch........ but the boss transitions where nice and the blend between the gen and nes levels was a decent switch!
There is a way this game could have been better.
- Use the classic top-down stages instead of using stages from Hard Corps
- Use the original music
- Hold two weapons
- Use bombs
- Use spin shot
For the extra abilities, there are definitely ways you can switch weapons, use bombs, and spin shoot, with this layout.
D-Pad - Move and aim
B - Shoot
A - Jump
L - Switch weapon
R - Lock
L+R - Spin shot
Select - Bomb
Start - Pause
Oh, and for the top-down stages...
D-Pad - Move and aim
B - Shoot
A - Duck
L - Switch weapons
R - Bombs
L+R - Spin shot
L + Left on d-pad - Turn camera left
L + Double tap left - Turn camera left fast
L + Right - Turn camera right
L + Double tap right - Turn camera right fast
Select - Nothing
Start - Pause
There we go.
Why would they butcher both Contra Spirits and Contra: Hard Corps and make this bizarre Frankenstein of a game? Looks like they took out the coolest parts of both (top down stages from Spirits and branching story/multiple characters from Hard Corps).
For what a SNES port machine the GBA was, it’s odd how they rarely attempted a Mode 7 recreation.
18:50 KAMEHAMEHA! 🌀
Great that they got rid of the overhead levels and added the hard corps level!
The music off here sounds like it's off the Game Boy Color or NES/Famicom. The GBA port for Zelda A Link to the Past has it's music sound still great, so why is it not the case for other gba ports of other snes games?
Definitely reminds me of Metroid fusion or zero mission
14:07
How do you make the power-up bounce like that?
Can you do it also in Contra 3?
I like that this version didn't include the top-down stage in the original. I hated those stages because of it's clunkiness.
CONTRA III EX is only a marginal update to CONTRA III on SNES.
Contra was always epic.
So amazing.
They tried to stop contra, but it doesn't matter
Its 3 4 6 are same stages as snes and hardcorps
The bad thing is its have just 6 levels not 8 or 10😢😢
That game boy advanced contra game was actually super contra and sega's Genesis contra hard corps rolled into one.
The train level is my favorite. Boss is freaking awesome.
I think this version isn't that bad at all, but not very good executed at all.
The think that really affected the game was the lose of the Second weapon (Bomb no so much... you can't lie, you barely use it).

Yeah, but it feels weird at times, still very good version to play actually, I pretty much love everything that says ''Contra'' (Except the PSX and SAT games... they stink)
Didn't realize it was that different of a game. Still gotta give it to the SNES version, cause of the weapon switching feature.
Amazing walkthrough
so they replaced the 3d levels that were probably really cool at the time but way too archaic now? damn thats awesome!
I wonder if someone has or is willing to mod Contra 3 to replace the mode 7 levels and recreate this experience. I'm not sure how hard it is to replace two levels, but if I knew anything about that kind of thing, I'd try doing it myself.
gba have LR button.....y da hell it can't have secondary weapon slot????
Considering the limitation of the GBA, this is not a bad port. Of course a few things had to be taken out, scaled back and such but a decent effort at least.
Nice Contra Hardcorps Collab... When the can't do the view from the blimp :''b
Doesn't help that Treasure (the developers of Gunstar Super Heroes) are comprised of ex-Konami employees
Yeah man I know. And the cherry on top of the cake is that Konamy hired Treasure to develop a Konami game that turned out to be the the best of the series hahaha xD (Talking about gradius 5,, obviously is my Opinion but Gradius Gaiden is also good)
With this game I get that GBA is cheaper and smaller SNES
It's funny cuz instead of improving the music and increasing difficulty , the makers made their bet on going backwards for a NES style
Man dat music, it's like someone on the toilet trying to squeeze out his wurst with a red face, but naffing happens. Good nostalgia though
The Contra Horps Stages feel unfitting to the Contra 3 setting.
Though at least I'm glad they replaced that godawful, 'Alien Nest' boss for stage 5, I hate fighting it because it always spun me around.
Don't you hate it when people make Contra look Easy by just Run and Freakin Gun but is in reality Fuckin HARD
Looks like i never got past level 4 boys😂 I always thought it was the final boss
Konami has done a way better job before with Castlevania COTM (which has a really kick ass soundtrack). A shame they didn't put the same effort in this port.
Snes sounds better, and wheres the second weapon and the bomb?
Is a game for a handled console genius..
What are you expecting for..??
The homing missiles are actually worth a damn in this version of the game. In Alien Wars it's super weak in hard mode. Pretty much worthless.
gba was snes hendheld
wtf! fusionaron contra 3 con el Hard Corp
Spreadshot became 2nd best the second they introduced the Enemy Chaser
Por qué no usas dos armas al mismo tiempo???? 😠😠😠
The graphics so bizarre
very good
Konami has made some of the best games ever.
Why there's no music in the opening?
when the DS came out I expected more SNES remakes on it since it has the same buttons and it could sound better than the GBA remakes but they never did, I am very upset because of that.

The GBA was much more powerful then the Snes. It could of done that staged without breaking a sweat.
Okay, so I've heard about over the top stuff before, but damn!
Setting for Contra the alien wars is the 27th century.
11:36 ultimate boss entrance lol
Así debió ser Contra 3 en Super Nintendo: sin esos malditos niveles de vista aérea.
Debe´r Deberían haer buenos videos omo este tipo de video, y y tner buenas puntuaciones, y terminar un poco más rápido.
my god that bosses footwork in level to wouldve driove me up the damn wall and kill me so many times if i played this.
Deadpool was in the game,he rode a tank!
soo basic contra hard wars or Alien corps?
How can I download this game on my computer, please could you help
Damn I wish I could finish this game before I lost it
The hardest vers.of all Contras is fan made Lock'n'Loaded ,this is kids game compare to that, offcourse this is made for beginners not for real players
Try Contra 3 on hard
Hey, where is the alien dog in the end? they took even THAT?
So is this game automatically harder than Contra 3 because you can only have one weapon?? I'd go crazy!
This doesn't look god awful. It's not really Contra 3, but it looks okay for a GBA Contra game.
The only difference is graphics some sounds music and the top down view stages are normal
