The Rockies chose to EXTEND Daniel Bard for 2 more years … they’re not contending for the next 2 years and relievers are the most volatile position in the game, let alone an aging one. Why??? • @grantreill1966
      @grantreill1966 Год назад +3

      What's a little odd about the Goldschmidt trade is that every single player from that trade made the big leagues, but none of them have been great. Luke Weaver and Carson Kelly looked to be the best receptions from that haul, but Weaver struggled with injury and consistency and is now on the Royals (and not doing so hot) while Kelly just had his first major injury cause his starting role to be supplanted by Gabriel Moreno's hot start (who himself was received in a notable deal, but notable for how it looks like an excellent decision for the Diamondbacks). Andrew Young didn't truly pan out, he hit the ball really hard but is now out of the league entirely. The Diamondbacks also received a competitive balance round B pick with the trade (more on that soon).
      Overall, the biggest Diamondbacks benefit in the long run has been that 1B was cleared up for Christian Walker, who has been an excellent producer with the bat plus being far and away the best defensive first baseman in the league. He's so good defensively that he's the only first baseman in the top 50 of Outs Above Average last year (and has put up excellent career metrics), and more than doubled the second place 1B in that leaderboard.
      Also, it's really early to tell for sure, but Dominic Fletcher, who the Diamondbacks selected with that Competitive Balance B pick they received, has looked really good in his first couple weeks with the team. Even when he regresses to the mean, Fletcher stands to have good league potential to stick around.
      The aggregate WAR of Goldschmidt in his STL years is 20.2 and counting. The Diamondbacks trade return gave them 6.5 and counting, but if you add in Christian Walker it becomes 16.5. So it's a heist as far as prospects are concerned unless Kelly and Fletcher start putting up big numbers, but Walker has done a better job than most could have done as a Goldy replacement. As a Diamondbacks fan I'd rather see Paul here still, but everyone's production coming together has made a bad trade more bearable.

    I still think the main reason the Rockies traded Nolan was because they expected him to opt out so it appeared to the fans that he left and they tried to keep him. However, the pandemic financially crunched teams and Nolan likely pressured Rockies management that would indeed not opt out. So they traded him so they wouldn't have to pay him if he stayed. Unfortunately, the Rockies care more about their public image than winning games

      @ryryshredder148 Honestly that wasn't really the case. They made the playoffs in 2017 and 2018, and 2020 was just wierd for everyone. They still had enough talent to build a winning team before 2021. They had a great rotation with Freeland, Marquez, Gray, and Senzatela, Arenado, story, Blackmon, and a couple promising talents in McMahon, Rodgers, and Lambert. Not all of them worked out obviously, but at the time they were still promising. The rockies also run a huge payroll for a midmarket team, so they could have spent more than they did (owners were doing fine, but the only way to be a billionare is to be a criminal so it's not surprising they all lied I guess). The point is the rockies were at a point where they could absolutely still turn it around if they had wanted to.

The best performances of Maybin and Miller were once the Marlins abandoned these players in subsequent trades and none of the had a career exceeding 10 WAR or lasting past Miguel Cabrera's career which will end at the end of this season. calling this "the worst trade in modern baseball history" or even just calling it a bad trade for colorado is to not understand how baseball trades and contracts work.
    the arenado contract was thought of as underwater at the time. this means that he had negative surplus value. or in other words that the rockies owed him more money than he would earn on the field. why? well, he was aging out of his prime, injured and awful the year before and had just signed a 9 year $275 million contract the year prior with an opt-out coming up in a few years. the fact that colorado threw in $51m to pay down his salary was the reason that they even got the super mediocre pacakge of meh prospects that they got in the first place.
    look at it this way: if your car is worth $15k but you still owe $18k on it, what is it worth to somebody else? less than nothing. even if you straight up gave it to them for free, theyd be dumb to take it, right?
    now having said all that, the results of the trade have been ridiculously great for st louis. he rebounded and was healthy and good in 2021 followed up by being MVP quality last year. then, when it looked for all the world like he'd opt out and get much more money either from the cardinals or some other team, he decided to opt in to the last 5 years of the deal. pretty awesome results all around for st louis.
    look, rockies management has been horrific. awful free agent signings, bad player development, blocking their best prospects playing time with mediocre veterans, even maybe giving arenado this absurd deal in the first place. they deserve a TON of blame for the awful spot the franchise currently finds itself in. but the one thing you cant really fault them for is cutting bait on the arenado contract when they had the chance.

    The NL West and gifting the Cardinals HoF players for nearly nothing. Name a better duo. Don't forget that the Diamondbacks traded Goldie for next to nothing to the Cards as well. In the last decade the Cards have been on the right side of two of the worst trades in MLB history. A bit of hyperbole but both the Rockies and Dbacks should be relegated for such terrible trades.

    I think this happens more often than not. I get that new faces need to be brought in to the league and the constant turn over helps with keeping talent on a high level. However this move wasn't a competitive trade at all. It was Colorado trying to pinch pennies and dump salaries and I think MLB needs to start blocking these kinds of moves because all it does is hurt fan bases and only benefit owners. Baseball is so corporatized it's bullshit.

Also sending Doyle Alexander and a few journeymen (one of whom was Elrod Hendricks, who we later got back) to the Yankees (ha!) for Rick Dempsey, Scotty McGregor, Tippy Martinez and Rudy May...and a year later, May went to the Expos for Gary Roenicke and Don "Full Pack" Stanhouse. Class of the American League for years afterwards.
