Honda CRF1100L on 17 300 km - Reliability and expenses

  • In this video I talk about cost of living with Honda CRF1100L on rougly one or two seasons. I had one CRF1100L for one year and did 8 000 km by myself and there is the other bike in my friend's rental company Canary Ride on Gran Canaria. This motorcycle has right now 17 300 km and so I decided to share real costs and potential troubles with bikes in these km.
As it turns out (not a big suprise) 17 000 km is absolutely nothing for well-made Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin as there is not much to talk about. If you are looking for trouble-free motorcycle Honda seems like a good investment.
    In the video I discuss:
    - service visits and their price
    - problems with bike on 17 300 km if any
    - tyre wear
    - brake pads wear
    - prices of original parts and accessories
Anyway... this is just a beginning of the series. I will soon publish another update to CRF1100, we have also CRF1000L with around 65 000 km (there is something to talk about), we have two Yamaha Ténéré 700 with around 20 000 km and many more. Subscribe to my channel to see the new updates.
Also if you are looking for a place to enjoy motorcycles in Europe regardless of the period of year, try Canary islands. It is motorcycle paradise (many examples you can see in my videos). You can also consider renting a bike from my friends rental company in Las Palmas. Here: bit.ly/canaryride
    Thanks for watching!

The more modern technology, the more reliability problems. Nice bike. It needs tubeless rims.
    I did 40,000 km on a 1991 XRV750 RD04 Africa Twin with zero problems.

Very informative video!! It was great to hear of issues even with older models which are not made clear in most reviews. The cutting out whilst changing down from 3rd to 2nd gear is worrying and cannot be explained away bye the dirty tank issue as this is reportedly only non the larger tanked ATAS models. The screen going black is also a worry, especially as it contains so much info now.

Great upload. That model is the one for me, with the addition of a taller screen.

Thank you. Just a little contribution to my channel. Working on bigger things now though :) So yeah, taller screen would be handy. Increased wind protections seems good idea, but also I kind cannot get used to the design of small wind screens on travel enduros. Like when there is CRF1100 and CRF1000 next to each other, from some angles the CRF1100 does not even look like big adventure bike... hm

I run TKC 70's on my GSA and I got over 15,000 kilometers fully loaded (250lbs of stuff). Went from Detroit to Panama on secondary roads. I could have made it round trip but on my return I had to hurry back and I jumped on the highway before Memphis Te, and that killed the rear rapidly. Good review and great bike, but could definitely use a taller screen. Cheers

Good review. Yes, I want to buy one but in NO WAY will be the black model on the Adventure sports, so Im betting for next 2022 model, maybe, just maybe they will bring another color choice for the adventure sports than just black. Only hope. If not it would be back to searching for my next adventure bike. Bikes are toys for many of us, and we look for them to be not only good but good looking.

Great informational video, looking forward for next milestone of that bike.
I can confirm the case, I have (only) 9 t. km on my CRF1100D2 DCT Adventure sports with only one ATAS known issue with the tank welding (fuel filter all dirty) that is still present on 2020, and I was really NOT impressed by the Prague dealer's action... But I addressed that proactively, and the bike runs great and is so much fun to ride.
Good to know about the brake pads, will check mine next thing.

Wow. That is sad to hear. Did your bike stall at low rpm's when your fuel issue started? I have the same 2020 ATASes 1100, with 9000kms, and have had it stall twice at end of season. What corrective measures were taken if you don't mind me asking. Love the bike otherwise. Thanks, Bill :-)

@@billmcmeekin7909 Haven't had issue with stalling. I did check fuel filter proactively because I was aware of this problem and had to get the tank off for color change anyway :)
Sent photos to dealer while I had it apart but I still had to put it back together and bring the bike if I wanted anything done on warranty so I took bike to the dealer- they cleaned the tank (at least that is what they told me, and I am not sure how they do it whether some chemical helps release the gunk) but put the already dirty filter back in. So I hope they did the cleaning right. After that I replaced the filter with guglatech mazinga which I would do anyway as it is recommended solution on the forums.

Hi, I have The same bike, and I would like to ask you if you have the same problems, I have seen an oil leak in the left side of the engine In the sensor assy and another issue is when I start the engine cold I notice almost all the times the idle is not stable, like it wants to turn off, have you noticed something about it? Thanks a lot.

Is that not quite a high fuel consumption rate for a modern bike? My GS [2014] sits around 5.2 Liter per 100km...admittedly I ride like a grandad.

I have an AT and run into the same issue but it only seems to happen when you clutch (when the rpms drop) for the shift from 3-2 or 2-1 so it’s not to bad you just hit the starter and it comes back

So the question we all want to know is how does it compare to the Tenere700, we know all the numbers but how do they feel in real life riding them? I am guessing the 1100 would be better on the road & the 700 better off road but since I cant even find a Tenere700 to look at here in the US yet that is only a guess

There are many videos or opinions on this topic out there, so I don't know if anyone waiting for mine to add. Haha. I did very detailed comparison on my primary Czech channel so I might consider to either create English subtitles or to do the same sort of video once again in English. Although it took me like 3-4 days of full time work. You can at least check a few pictures from the video: ruclips.net/video/9F1UKJcl26k/видео.html
The answer is not as straightforward as it it seems. Yes Africa is more comfy on the road an slightly faster. It feels way faster, but in reality in some scenarios Tenere is even harder accelerating. Sitting on the bike is different, very different feelings. The consumption makes a big difference on the bike. Weight of course. You feel Tenere is more durable and somehow more reliable although it may be very similar in a long-term. There is an interesting difference on how many different aftermarket products you can buy on each bikes = there is way bigger market and support for Tenere. Etc. Etc. I will think over and I may record it again in English for you guys.

The Tenere t7 is not comparable to the crf1100,both good bikes, but very different. The afrika twin is a more a grow up bike, the tenere the more cheap solution if you more ride on dirt then gravel. i tested both, and was a little dissapointed by the T7.Even with the akrapovic the sound was not good. The AT sound great from start with the original exhaust. The AT has much more power
