      Quite different really, I also own a 790 adventure. The Honda is bigger and heavier, but obviously that brings some solidity to it. Personally I love the looks of the Honda and the DCT is fantastic. If I had the money I would trade my 790 for one, and I really really like my KTM!

    I have a 2020 ATASes DCT and absolutely love it. 15000 km, with one spoke hub end falling off. Fuel tank issue as per all Adventure Sports, otherwise bullet proof. Just finished 4500 km through BC interior, Vancouver Island, Sunshine Coast with four others. Camped 50%, with about 40% offroad on trip. Multiple days of honesty 46+ ' Celsius, on dirt mountain passes. 8 days all above 35' C. Bike's ran Honda reliable, as expected. Changed tires to Metzler E07's and found awesome for blend of HWY/gravel terrains. The electronic suspension is well well underrated. Fork dive is gone on street. Switch to dirt or gravel and suspension instantly softens and adapts. Add a pillion, or panniers, again a push of a button adapts to a perfect ride. This bike sells itself. As a dirt rider all my life this bike has pleasantly surprised me in ways I'd never expect. Countless hours of research and development have gone into this machine and it shows. I'm 6'2" at 220 pounds and find it very comfortable. Don't try one unless you have the cash to buy. They're that good!

    • @mancavemoto
      @mancavemoto  3 года назад +1

      I do like the electronic suspension on the AS, as you say really handy for loading up with luggage.

    • @mlivesay529
      @mlivesay529 3 года назад

      I'm virtually the same height and weight as yourself so I'm thinking it would be a good fit ergo-wise. I'd appreciate your thoughts on whether it has enough power on tap to be somewhat sporty on mountain roads, and to bring along a pillion occasionally?

    • @billmcmeekin7909
      @billmcmeekin7909 3 года назад +3

      @@mlivesay529 For me it has plenty of power. Spins the back wheel all day if that's what I want, except I'm over 50 now, and don't heal all that quick any longer, lol. We don't ride much single track on these bikes, but most any two track around our Rocky mountains are great on the Twins. My bud is 57 and packed his wife about 4000 km on a 19, 1000 ATAS, with us. Forestry roads throughout BC, Vancouver Island , Vancouver/various cities, Sunshine Coast, Interior and Northern BC, and they never missed a beat. My 1100 has more power and electronic suspension, which I believe would be even easier. Put mine away this week as snow flying here now. Felt like crying, lol. Come on Spring! :-) Best of luck 529, hope you find a nice ride :-)

    • @mlivesay529
      @mlivesay529 3 года назад +1

      @@billmcmeekin7909 Thanks for the reply. Sounds like a fantastic machine. I'm 52, coming from a Tracer 900. I haven't really had much off-road experience but it feels like I'm missing out on some good riding as I live in the Chattanooga area.
      I've been considering the ATAS ES and the KTM Super Adv S. I know, 2 very different bikes. I was leaning towards the SA-S. As much as the hooligan in me wants the KTM, the more I look at the AT, its do-it-all capability, comfort, and reliability are winning me over. That red, white, and blue paint scheme is just beautiful.
      Have fun farkling while the weather is nasty. Cheers!

    It's a bike that runs like a car when it comes to maintenance. If you are going to go off road on the DCT with tricky terrain or going to do technical riding, get the footpeg and the off road rear brake pedal!

  • @todde.richardson

    DCT all the way! A person really cannot ride one for a few minutes, an hour, or even a day and give the DCT a fair review, it takes time to rewrite the brain. The first month of riding mine, I kept grabbing for the clutch and searching for the gear shifter 😂🤦🏻‍♂️; 45 continuous years riding (none of this sissy stuff of taking 20+ years off for kids, they rode too) and owning 34 different bikes, the ingrained riding habits just don’t rewire easy. I’ve had my 2016 AT DCT for 4 years (and I have a Goldwing) and love it. Just stop in the middle of a steep dirt trail, then we’ll talk about the DCT! I wish they had it in the CBX500.

    It took me a while to adjust to the DCT but now I love it. In addition to the finger shift you can also add on a foot shifter and ride like any quick shifter, this is ideal if your riding different bikes each day.

      @@lwazisabelo4988 are you asking if this is good for a first time rider? The DCT would make a bike easier to ride for a new rider on Road, just like twist and go scooters are easy for new riders. HOWEVER it’s not suitable as a first off road motorcycle,way to big and powerful that could easily hurt you. The Africa Twin is in my view a bit too big as a first motorcycle even on the road because of its power and its weight, unless you’re a very big guy (over 1.9 m or 6’2”) then I’d suggest starting with a smaller lighter bike, for on road around 500cc to 750cc and for off road 250cc or 300cc. I hope I understood your question and that this helps ?

    I own a 21 AT DCT and grown to really like it . I kinda of disagree with the comment about test riding one . I did a short test ride and wasn't all that impressed because I didn't get a chance to understand all the ride modes. But I bought it anyway. After 3000 miles I can say it's a awesome bike. Like many people I won't do anymore than probably gravel roads. My longest day so far is 475 miles with the help of a couple different seat cushions. To me the seat leaves something to be desired. With a good seat I've thought I could probably put on as many miles in a day as my 2019 Goldwing that has the (stock seat for now. )
    I need to get back out to California and get a Russell seat built for the AT . Before the whole state burns up🔥

Feels very heavy to manhandle, gives me hellish bum ache after an hour, and, most annoying, the gearbox/clutch/quick shifter setup leaves me cold. First time I've seen the automated video showing the design of this DTC transmission. In a mere few seconds, it shows that this is going to work, & last ...I don't know why in this day & age, manufacturers continue to deem the public incapable of making these judgments ..I'm thinking that %50 or more bike riders will do their own maintenance ,& a overall picture of what they are maintaining is critical... As an example of nonexistent, or hilarious manufacturer maintenance instructions., I hold up 45 years + of complicated antics, said necessary to" check"valve clearances., on any brand ....Most of the time the owner can just put the bike in top gear ., loosen (without removing) the spark plugs, & bump the engine forward until the cam lobes point away from the lifters or rockers ,(whatever the case)... Instead they show the most complicated intensely technical way they they can...I propose the next automated video, should show what you are looking to see ., 2 frames , one right, & one wrong way to do this "check"., It will sell more bikes. Just like this previously unseen DTC video did for me!

    After 8500 miles... I like the DCT, but sometimes jerky and makes dowshift during acceleration only when you use full throttle.
    The electronics/infotainment system is horried the weakest point. The daschboard far from the top class. The lamps are disappointment. On bad roads has a rattling sound from the front which I cant kill yet. ;)

    • @mancavemoto
      @mancavemoto  3 года назад

      Thanks for the info, i've not had any jerky changes, sometimes the engine braking with a downshift can give that impression. I think the dashboard is one of the clearest out there, with the new KTM ones. The controls may be less intuitive, but the display is fine for me. Shame you've got a rattle, hope you find the source.

    Sorely tempted over my 2014 GSA which has had quality issue and dreadful service from Mororrad when it came to dealing with a rotting frame and subframe. Sorted eventually but no bike for several months over a the summer and many visits to the dealer. I was blatantly lied to as part of the process. My local Honda dealer is dire too from my time with a Varadero XL 1000. I loved the bike but it never came out from a service without damage of some sort. Hmmm.

    • @mancavemoto
      @mancavemoto  2 года назад

      Its a great bike, an you've highlighted a problem the manufacturers have. The service people get from the dealer is often the lasting one they have of the brand. Some dealers are better than others but they are independent of the manufacturer and no matter how much influence they try to impose, if the dealer wants to offer poor service, thats what they'll do

    Hi Tony, knowing what you know now after riding the Africa Twin, what would you choose between the Africa Twin and the KTM 790 adv ?

    • @mancavemoto
      @mancavemoto  3 года назад +2

      That’s a really difficult question and one I’ve been going back and forth on. I love both bikes, but for different reasons. The 790 is lighter and more nimble, I’m a bit more confident on it in the dirt and it’s great fun to ride. The Honda is bigger and heavier but is a better mile muncher. I’m getting more confident off road too. If comparing manual bikes only, I’d go for the KTM (and probably an 890) but the DCT gearbox elevates the Honda somewhat. I’m being really honest when I say it’s hard for me to choose between the too. One thing to further consider is that the ktm is cheaper and I have a good dealer on my doorstep,

    Not sure how you have some gear for this bike but it's not yours ? Ah I just heard you said you have it on loan , wow didn't know that dealers loaned these out . Anyway hope you get a chance to get this bike . I have the Tenere 700 and only have 875 miles on it and I have had it for just over a year now . Work work and more work . I have to do my first moto camp real soon as the weather is starting to change .
    I sort of out grew my Suzuki DR650 and had been eyeballing the new Twin and the Tenere that was soon coming out , boy I just thought man those are the 2 best looking bikes ever . Got my deposit in for the Tenere in Feb 2020 and then something crazy happened and is still happening . The Tenere is one third less in price but not a third less fun I would imagine . Anyway thanks for the review , it's so tempting to say scree it and go sign some papers and get one but that would get me stoned to death by the misses . If she saw another motorcycle in the garage , I only have one , she would go crazy . Awe man that bike is great though , I have to test ride one. Take care and that would be awesome if you can swing it and have that bike .

      The bike is on loan from Honda UK and they are relaxed about fitting parts to it, as long as it’s returned to them in the original spec. It’s a great bike and I’ve really grown to love it. It’s the DCT that makes it stand out for me. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment

    I gather at the Honda off road centre the advice is that for the vast majority of riders except experts the DCT is far better off road. I have a DCT Goldwing and have ridden the manual version frankly I can’t understand why anyone would consider the manual for the bike the DCT is so superior

    • @mancavemoto
      @mancavemoto  3 года назад

      It certainly helps as you can't stall it. However the only drawback is that it could be prone to a bit of 'Whisky Throttle' if your positioning and bike handling isnt too good off road. I'd pick the DCT version on any of the Hondas that have it.

    *The Girl On A Bike* has proven the excellent accessibility of this bike in very challenging off-road conditions. It's a really versatile platform which can convey you very long distances on tarmac fully loaded in total comfort all the way to your favourite dirt rides and the engine's relatively lowish state of tune means Honda's traditional reliability is more or less guaranteed.

    I had a 2019 DCT and I couldn't get into it. I tried to off-road the bike and it was way too twitchy at low speed (1st gear). It's hard to recover from a lunge because you don't have a clutch. I commute every day in and around Brisbane on a '17 dct with factory panniers. It's not really that wide - lane splitting is easy - I've only slightly scratched the right hand side pannier once squeezing through a gap. For slow speed filtering put it in sport mode #2 and activate the G button. It makes everything a bit smoother. Slow speed filtering and manoeuvres in drive mode is a bit jerky for me, but you can also smooth it out with feathering the rear brake. The early models do suffer from gear changes at slightly inappropriate occasions like roundabouts and corners, you learn to adapt to that though. The newer versions with imu's fitted overcome that issue. It is great in the dirt - don't be afraid to try it. My other ride is an Aprilia SL1000 and although it's great fun and raw - the AT with dct is just so effortless.

      I guess it depends on how you 'off road', if youre trying to take it where dirt bikes should be going you might be asking for trouble. I only ride light off road and have never bottomed out, plus you can wind more compression into the forks to counter it. It is a softer ride as standard which is what makes it so plush on the road.
