Hi, Kai! Watching this and you mentioned the heaviness and weight of the giant creatures at around the 10:00 mark and it reminded me of "Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV". It's an entirely CG animated movie released before Final Fantasy XV to give more context and story behind the events that happen before the game. There's a scene near the end of it that has these *Massive* creatures fighting it out, and think it would be awesome if you'd take a look at it (or the movie as a whole). Despite the creatures both being ridiculously large, some of them are noticeably smaller than the others and due to that more speedy. Similar to something like Pacific Rim where one of the Jaegars is built for speed, while still having that impact and uumph to it. In my opinion the entire movie is worth the watch and I think your reaction to it as a whole would be awesome, but the final fight scene in particular would be really cool to see your reaction to.
Honestly would suggest Armored Core. Fun journey from I think 98-23 and how much they improved. Especially because they are not a Square or Blizzard financially and by the time you hit Armored Core 4, it gets really high quality.
It would be cool to see you watch Modern Warfares Cutscenes, the Original games and then move to the new saga and have a deep dive comparison between their respective cinematography. :D
Yo mate, you outta check out 'OtaKing', his Star Wars: TIE Fighter cinematic is legendary, and he just released a new cinematic in the universe of Alien too!
dawn of war 3 changed the core gameplay formula to try to attract a wider audience. specifically a competitive moba audience but in the process it alienated both sides of the already fractured dawn of war community.
DICE did similar with BF2043 and spent a lot of time back-peddling but it was a bit too late for a lot of us. I think that developers have learnt that mistake now...I hope. Battlefield may yet recover, DOW, alas... :(
@@davidgill5699 Not sure where Warcraft factors in but TBH with a player base as large as WOW's you're bound to alienate some people no matter what you change or introduce...
The cutscene at the start of the first Dawn of War was mindblowing at the time, Id already been into 40k since the late 80's and when I saw that cutscene it was the first time the world was brought to life.
Same. I started in 3rd and Dawn of War changed utterly how I saw the Orks. I thought they were slow, stupid ugly things (which in many ways they are) but seeing the cinematic and in game shows their sheer energy, power, wild berserkers nature and Orks went from being the lamest faction in 40k to me to literally one of the coolest.
@@clawhammr666 - I think that's the general rule for many. DoW 1 was the mixed RTS/Squad stuff with a great campaign. DoW 2 took a different direction, but the RPG element put into squads for the epic campaign was awesome. On top of that the DLC with Retribution made it live for so long. DoW 3 we don't speak of. I did complete it, but I felt empty inside doing it.
@@R1po I must be the rare type who started at 3. That way I was blown away by the constant improvements I was seeing. Though since I never experienced the older 2 I quite enjoyed 3 as a stand alone intro to the universe.
@@Sanzor1984 DOW1 was great. DOW2 was dogsh1t. I couldn't bring myself to finish the campaign and the multiplayer was inferior to DOW1. There was nothing wrong with DOW3. I finished the story, it was epic, if not *that* lore accurate and the multiplayer was really solid. Then you 2 IQ children started making up all these lame excuses to hate the game because that was the "cool thing to do" at the time and the game died for no good reason. I hope you never get a DOW4, you don't deserve it
18:54 what is brilliant about it - it's because for the FIRST time in all 40k content somebody did make "wraith bone" armor RIGHT. Wraith bone is a unique material, it is a form of crystallized psychic energy that can exist as a solid in realspace brought forth from the Warp and shaped by an craftworld's eldar (bonesingers) concentrating his thoughts and intent upon it. It is a psycho-plastic material that is highly resilient to damage, and capable of limited self-repair (!). It, and the other building materials of the Aeldari, will grow and react more like living tissue than the building materials of other intelligent species (expect necrons and tyranids). On my memory it's the best display of such properties of basically "psy-bone" material in 40k arts/cinematics.
@@shykorustotora I started on 1, and I liked 3. It played differently from the other two, more micro heavy, but it was a good game in its own right. Can't say that out loud though, people will almost crucify you for liking it.
@@reginadea2821 Exactly. I started with 1, played 2 and hated the changes, but I thought 3 was really solid. If felt like a mashup of WarCraft 3 and DOW1. Unfortunately most people seem to repeat the same excuses to not like it over and over, not realizing that if they activated more than 2 brain cells, they would've enjoyed it too. Did you also work out you could just change the game mode from the MOBA mode to the regular capture the point mode? 99% of the people in the comments here never worked that out lol
@@shykorustotora Hmm you don't seem to really want to get convinced why people don't like it but I will give it an honest try. I got this game for free from a graphic card purchase and did not care about early reviews as people tend to get overly salty about stuff and I wanted to try it. I got several hundred gameplay hours in DoW I & II. So let's get to my reasoning: Apart from starting weak with only 3 factions, only a few maps and a single campaign while having clunky micro the thing that bothered me the most BY far was Gabriel Angelos jumping around like Yoda in the campaign with his heavy Terminator armor. By turning the game into a hybrid of DoW I & II with heavy focus on the "moba-esque" gameplay by having odd skills slapped onto heroes they completely disregarded the IP of Warhammer 40k. And the IP was carrying the series to begin with. Also while I hear it often as a reason for it being bad, the moba aspect was not the real problem as DoW II has it as well. So people who are not into 40k lore might find the game ok. tl;dr: If you make something using any IP, respect the IP and it's lore.
@@shykorustotora Yeah. A bunch of people say it's like a MOBA, but then I have only played capture the point and it was just... DoW2 with base building. That's it. Unfortunately a lot of people decided to hate the game before it released (backflipping terminators OMG!!11!) and never gave it a chance. It would have been great if it got more faction DLCs.
18:08 The whole quote in DoW3 trailer is about the Space Marine that about to die (in the face of death I will have no remorse), it's some sort of his last litany. The passage about "In throes of rage, I shall hone my craft." it's about the craft of all space marines, their craft is death. It's their famous quote/slogan, just like in 300 movie - "Spartans, what is your profession?!" Just like in the Space Marine pledge: What is your life? - My honor is my life. What is your fate? - My duty is my fate. What is your fear? - My fear is to fail. What is your reward? - My salvation is my reward. What is your craft? - MY CRAFT IS DEATH. What is your pledge? - My pledge is eternal service
The DoW 1 cinematic is indeed legendary among game cinematics. The slow/stuttering when the sword eldar attacked was the represantation of their phsycic scream ability. Big white mech is a Eldar "wraithknight", the human mech is a "Imperial Knight". DoW3 cinematic looks really good and has some very cool stuff in it, unfortunately the game itself flopped hard because it heavily departed from the previous games in unwelcome ways. (Yes the thin marines look silly and the proportions are wrong)
@@PetiteOlivee The proportionsd of the wraith and knight are too large yes. The warhound titan has a dog (hound) like snout face/head that points forward, you can also see a heraldric shield on the right shoulder of the knight. The long gun (looks like a medieval lance) and chain sword combo is also a classic imperial knight weapon loadout.
6:19 yes, yes that is a Tyranid. It looks to be of the Lictor sub species. As for the marine getting back up to fight, we’ll “only in death does duty end.”
The moment in DoW1 when the dreadnought steps out of the smoke and the music kicks in just blew me away and still gives me chills. This intro was also the first time I saw blood hitting the camera in a game.
00:06:00 The cinematic stops here initially when you watch it as the opening to Dawn of War 2 (I think in trailers as well pre-release). You don't get the full movie until you've completed the campaign because the beastie gives away the mid-game surprise of a tyranid invasion. Not that is comes as much of a surprise to anyone who knows anything about tyranids anyway, but it's a nice touch.
Yeah first time playing DoW2 it was a HUGE surprise to see my favourite nomnom boys show up as the real threat. These days i dont think a secret like that would be possible with how closely games are followed. It'd be a hard thing to keep under wraps at the very least.
@@heroicbob Of course. I also refer to the common habit these days to reveal the juicy parts of games just to try and sell more preorders, I much prefer secrecy if its done for a good reveal while playing :)
Yeah, man. When that first trailer came out for the first Dawn of War, it was considered better than what Blizzard was doing at the time. And it still holds up really well.
The Dawn of War 1 cinematic was made by Blur Studios, who have done an absolute mountain of amazing video game cinematics and animations. Having played 40k for many years, it's still one of my favourite cinematics and I hope we're finally getting to a point where we're seeing more of this style of Warhammer animation.
Blur is the studio behind some of my favorite Cinematic animated works of all time, including but not limited to: Halo Wars' Cutscenes (both games) and trailers Halo 2 Anniversary's Cutscenes and Most of Love Death & Robots
@@Taggynn Oh shit they did stuff on LD&R? That's amazing but also not surprising at all in retrospect :P . Sonnie's Edge is MINDBLOWINGLY brilliant. The fluid movements and lighting in that deathmatch is just unreal.
@@Musabre They didn't just do LD&R, they're the *main minds* behind the project iirc, animating many of the episodes and being the people who organized much of it with other studios Of course I could be wrong lol, but from what I remember, they're basically the main producers of the anthology
The dawn of war 1 opening cinematic always brings a loyalist tear to my eye. it was my first introduction to the Warhammer universe and I haven't looked back since
The Eldar in the white with the red hair are Howling Banshees, and they have an amplifier that paralyses their enemy as they scream on the charge. I think that the frame rate change in the second trailer was to illustrate that effect.
TL:DR; We wanted another DoW 1 style game but they didnt stick with it. Thats why majority of people dont like DoW III. I would recommend the DLC trailers for each too. Would love a reacts for that too!
They even had the gall to claim that base building was 'back' in 3, but then gave us the sorry state of affairs seen in DoW3. Truly an absolute train wreck, with a carriage full of brand recognition and developer goodwill spilling all over the tracks. :(
Funny thing is they did stick with it. You'd know that if you just used the drop down menu to change the game mode. Nothing wrong with the game, just the kids with 2 IQ who don't know how to play it
one other comment talked about the Pariah Nexus, but just to give you a breakdown of the current official Warhammer Animations from Games Workshop in Warhammertv Pariah Nexus: it's primarily about the Necrons, from the point of view of a Sister of Battle trying to survive in a destroyed Imperium world now overrun with Necrons. it's 3 episodes The Exodite: it's a story about the cycle of violence and war, following the point of view of a Tau squad hunting down an Aeldari Exodite in a Battle between the Tau Empire and the Imperium of Man, as the Aeldari is trying to sabotage peace negotiations. this is also 3 episodes. Iron Within: told from the point of View of the Imperial Guard as they are failing to defend their Planet from a Dark Eldar Raid, until space marines arrive to save them...or are they? this is just one episode Broken Lance: it's a story told from the pov of the Imperial Knights as they defend an Imperial Knight World from a Chaos Invasion. it's also one episode then there's Hammer and Bolter that's more of an anthology with different animation styles and stories per episode, and it's a mix of Warhammer 40k and Warhammer Age of Sigmar stories. the last one I'm aware of that's already released is Angels of Death, which might be the longest series so far with 10 episodes and 3 prequel episodes, it follows a group of Blood Angels Space Marines. but there's a new series coming out called "The Tithes" and I think it's gonna be an anthology. I've only watched Pariah Nexus, The Exodite, and Iron Within, and I have to say Pariah Nexus is the most well animated of the three, while I find that both Pariah Nexus and Exodite have great stories both, I can't say much for Iron Within as I've only watched it once. but I highly recommend watching Pariah Nexus and Exodite, but I think Iron within is still worth at least a watch. and I think Angels of Death deserves a watch too even if it's a bit longer as it's so much more stylized than the others here.
I think that, when the banshees attacked in the DOW2 trailer, the weird framerate was their attempt to show how their psychic scream worked. Their initial attack is supposed to be accompanied by an overwhelming mental stun grenade that renders the target confused and afraid....though, in this case i guess the marines were like "meh".
It's funny as Dawn of war 1 has several other cinematics that look old but hold up just as well as the one seen here. The marines versus the robot necrons, a lot of dark red to bright green lightning. And afterwards the warzone of guardsman and Tau. Loads of greens and blues everywhere.
What made the Dawn of War series so facinating was how different all 3 games are from one another. 1 was all about capturing resource points and use agressive tactics while 2 was squad based, playing with only a small group of Space Marines while 3 was going back to 1's gameplay only with bigger units. Dawn of War 2 is my personal favorite since i love great storytelling and this game is full of it. I recommend u check out the expansion cinematics of 1 and 2 had since both games had at least 3 expansions, 3 had none since the game was a massive failure and the end of the Dawn of War series for now. On another note, any chance u'll go back and check out the Honkai Star rail trailers in the future?
There is nothing like the dawn of war 1 trailer/cinematic. For a background the game is based on taking and holding positions to generate supplies to build so that last bit just completely involves one of the core aspects of the game. If the first one isnt your favorite I'll be completely stunned. Just like an overall emersive to both sides. Space Marines big heavy massive armor and big clunky war machines and the orks with spray and pray. The attacking Marines invigorated them for a good fight. Just everything about this is amazing
The trailer for 3 is legitimately one of my favourite game trailers, right up there with Halo Reach's Deliver Hope, ODST's We Are ODST, and the Titanfall 2 live action trailer. I cannot tell you how much that trailer got me hyped for 3. I know nothing about film making or any of that, but the music, the voiceover, the surreality of it, it got me good. The reveal of the wraithknight had me so excited. The eldar were always my favourite faction and the wraithknight is one of my favourite units, and the buildup and reveal of it was amazing. It also had to do with the fact that I was not expecting us to get knight units at all, so that scene with the knight stepping past, then the shot of them standing there, got me so exited.
A really cool thing, at least in the first two trailers, is that they subtly represent what the games are like. The first game is more of a grand RTS so you see these two armies duking it out, nonstop action, selling the energy of the game and the universe. But the second game is much smaller scale. You go from building and controlling an army with vehicles and buildings and stuff to more of a special forces vibe, at most 4 squads at a time that you then grow and improve, so in the trailer it’s just about a dozen warriors who face off in the middle of a jungle. No big battlefield, no bombastic artillery, very close quarters fighting with both sides stalking/hunting each other. And then of course the dreadnought steals the show, as it does in both games as well. Threes trailer, while excellent in its own right, is more just cinematic spectacle. I did absolutely love it when it came out, and I was very hyped for the game (which made the disappointment that much more crushing). It does showcase some new things, like the fact Knights are in the game (which they weren’t in the first two) but I at least don’t get as much of a feel for how the game will play like I do in the first two trailers. That might just be coloured by the poor quality of the game, though. Fantastic analysis all in all
If you want a "movie" like this I cant help you. But there is an pretty cool short series called Warhammer 40k Pariah nexus. its pretty much the same art style of dawn of war 3 trailer(tho its a series and not a trailer so not as good of lighting as suchs).
On the strange proportions of the DoWIII marines - the game has a very stylized esthetic. Basically the story of DoWIII is told as a murky prophecy as told by an Eldar Seer trapped in a state between life and death, which is why the whole thing got a very surreal, dreamlike vibe going for it. The events you see in the trailer are indeed not ment to be taken literally, and the game's characters are generally presented as larger-than-life figures who all seem to exist in a featureless void.
I remember when Dawn Of War came out, i got it on disc at Sams club lol! but the opening cinematic was my first intro to Warhammer, and its stuck with me all these years as a core memory lol!
Man, the sound of that Dreadnought's Assault Cannon revving up and unleashing hell on that hillside in the DoW 1 cinematic is just sex in my ears man. It's like watching an A-10 Thunderbolt II absolutely pulverizing a target with it's GAU-8 Avenger cannon. SO satisfying In the DoW 2 one, the bigger threat is the Tyranid Hive Fleet descending upon the recruitment worlds of the Blood Ravens Chapter. Tyranids are basically Zerg (initially Zerg were meant to be Tyranids as Starcraft was originally designed as a 40K game but GW pulled out partway through, so Blizzard repurposed the assets they'd created), and have entered our galaxy from outside in order to consume ALL biomass and convert it into more Tyranids. Also, LOVE the Dreadnought's vox-unit saying in that inhuman and dispassionate voice "I HAVE COME TO DESTROY YOU"
Covering Dawn of War? I always stick to my word and that's one thing people can trust me on. I don't play games and I do listen to you guys, I think it's important. I hope you enjoyed it.
so happy to have discovered you through the astartes reaction and now, here we are, knowing the difference between terminators and dreadnaughts. love it. ABSOLUTLY love it
I remember all the hype when the DoW3 Trailer dropped. It was absolutely gorgeous and me n my friends couldnt wait. Then we played the game and yea... history was made we can say that much...
@@kaizammit it didnt know what it wanted to be. you have moba elements with loads of troops on the screen which just felt off because you lost track what was happening everywhere and your low tier troops just got whiped instantly. There were so many effects which just added to the chaos. overall the gameplay just felt clumsy, overwhelming and chaotic. There are Strategy games where thats no issue, Starcraft for example but you had way less troops on the screen, more clear visuals and the effects were less chaotic. The gameplay just felt off for us. Also the only multiplayermode on launch was nothing the community wanted.
The DoW 1 intro was created by Blur Studio. It was the first time I had heard of them, but I became a fan instantly. You're right, at the time it obviously at a much higher standard than other game cinematics.
The cutscenes from Warhammer 40k Darktide are really good and definitely worth a watch The game covers different parts of the universe other than just space marines and stuff, but they're all beautifully animated, especially the pre-rendered ones. The intro "I am a Warrior" Cinematic never fails to get me pumped to kill some heretics.
18:08 It could have been a good guess but not quite. What the Gretchin found is actually a hair squig, it's basically some type of fungoid animal close to the orks than they attach to their heads to simulate hair because they do not have some naturally. Great video btw !
You can imagine for me and my friends when the first Dawn of war released. We have been in the hobby seems out early teens and this was the first time in "modern" gaming we got to see space marines in motion, how their armor would function etc.
@kaizammit The most atmospheric cinematic - dow3, the most balanced in all aspects dow1. Apart from Dow3 cinematic, that one of teh best I saw so far dor a lot of years. Warhammer Mark of Chaos also very good. So these 3 mentioned is very good.
I still remember just how awestruck I was by that cinematic from the first Dawn of War just shy of 20 years ago. It really was truly awesome for its time and still looks great.
Honeatly i just like watching people react tp 40k stuff. This was actually quite educational though, you taught me quite a few things here about filmaking i had bever even noyiced before. Kudos
I remember reading a comment about how hard the first Dawn of War cinematic was made, idk if it's true but it sounds plausible. It was said that the tech during the time it was made didn't have the advancements we have nowadays, and that the lighting was such a hard thing to do back in the day, if my memory serves me right, "the lighting had to be done individually".
The DoW 3 cinematic has heavy inspiration from Zdzisław Beksiński, a polish painter (who was murdered in 2005). The chest on the Emperor statue is almost a copy paste of the Trumpeter, and the texture of Eldars armor and the structure they jumped out of is 100% Zdzisław's style.
Great video as always, Dawn of War 3's trailer I'll just watch sometimes because it gives me chills. The other two trailers are classics of course, but DoW3's trailer is genuinely filmmaking. I'd love to see you do a video on the Hired Steel fan animated series some time too! It's a fan series that's ongoing in the Battletech universe, a series thats even older than Warhammer 40K!
Another older, but also great, cinematic is the Warhammer Fantasy - Mark of Chaos. They did some cool stuff on that one too. And it is a great game as well.
The DoW 3 trailer is one of those I forget exists, mainly because of how the game just burnt its fanbase... but every time it comes up, I remember what an absolute masterpiece it was. I remember seeing it for the first time and I'm a huge fan of the Dark Eldar and particularly the Howling Banshees. So when it cuts to that shot with the banshee in its little cave, I was so sold on the game. Plus the Eldar mechs are just so cool. I was so ready for this game and was so disillusioned with the final product.
To be fair, the game didn't "burn" its fanbase. The fanbase betrayed it because RELIC assumed their players would have more than 2 IQ and realize they could just change the game mode with a dropdown menu. Alas, their players did not have more than 2 IQ and the game flopped unfairly
The trailer of DOW III is what got me into the hobby. THe imperial knight crashing into the eldar titan, them crashign down on the soldier. the scale. I went and bought an imperial knight and a space marine starter set because of that.
It was the DOW1 intro video that got me interested in 3d animation. When that came out it blew my mind and is still a great watch. I even modeled, rigged and animated a dreadnaught because I was so inspired by that video. Though on a side note, Dawn of war 3 doesn't exist. Just like DMC2. Ghost stories we tell the kids.
These were great, I love the Warhammer universe. Fatshark had a really good cinematic for darktide world intro. also, the level 1 cinematic "I am a warrior" was really good, I'd love to see your reaction.
Always key thing to remember kai, those imperial machines you seen were knights. The god machines of man kind (titans) scale even bigger. Sizes are pretty debated but I'm pretty sure a safe baseline is 20/25m for warhounds, 30-35m for warlords and 45-50m for imperators. I think knights roughly are 15-18 meters depending on the type.
Can't count the numbers of times I've watched the first Dawn of War cinematic when the game came out. I still find it much more superior in video quality to the second one using "in game" graphics. And from a story and action point of view also better than the third.
4:33 A little lore, Howling Banshees (the ladies in the shot) have psychosonic amplifiers in their masks. It allows them to create shockwaves that both destroy a person's body and mind by screaming their rage at them. I think that frame rate thing is representing that. Blurred vision and disorientation and all that. Yeah, Dawn of War 3 was kind of one of those things what was done by people that knew just enough about 40k to be off just enough to hit that uncanny valley. Not one of those people that think it's the worst 40k game ever, it's just not, but it's average and that's not really acceptable when the other 2 where like 9/10 games. Still Sega hired Blur studios to do the intro and they knocked it out of the park for the most part.
If I'm not mistaken, the reason they suddenly get thinner at DoWIII is because of the whole Primaris gene-seed thing (which only happened a couple years ago IRL), which in short made all space marines a lot taller (and more resilient) without making them any more bulky.
@@kaizammit well, i was thinking about it and i remember times i was going to skip, but i dont think i did. If i ever did it was 1 or 2 times and i dont remember....
You may want to have a look at all the Warhammer Fantasy stuff. Mark of Chaos cinematic is an oldie but a goldie, I personaly love the End Times: Vermintide release trailer and of course the mountain of Total War Warhammer cinematics. Some DLCs from TW:Warhammer 2 especially are a bit of a Warhammer interpretation of movie classics, I think you would have quite a bit of fun (and potentialy a lot of videos) with them.
One cool thing about the DoW 2 trailer is that you don't get that "full" version until you complete the campaign. It ends when you see the "clouds", because you only know about the Tyranid threat at mid-campaign more or less. I haven't played it in a while but I think what I said is correct unless i'm misremembering.
Yeah, YEAH, YEEEEEEEAAAAAHHHH, WARHAMMER, WOOOOOOOOOOOO! I love it when you dabble in the brutal stuff, and as a 40k...well, compared to others, I'm a noob, but, after like 4,000+ hours of listening to the lore, but, let's say fan, I can't be happier when I see you peering into our beloved world :)))
🤯 Holy shit your breakdown just made me realise that all that smog is conveying Fog of War. FoW is all the area on the map you can’t see in a strategy game. There you can only see darkened terrain until you have units to get visual and light up the area, and then you can see all the enemies hiding in the fog. And yes, when I watched it I was crazy hyped for it. Made me replay the Dark Crusade DLC from the first game.
you forgot the Dark Crusade and Soulstorm trailer. You should also watch the 9th edition trailer and the 10th edition trailer. in the dawn of war series there is also the dawn of war 2 retribution.
If you ever decide to watch any of the trailers for some of the Warhammer Fantasy games, i'd recommend the trailer for Mark of Chaos (and its expansion Battle March)
@@kaizammit Neat to hear. Though i do have to say, while i like the Total War Warhammer games and the trailers, a lot of them are very 'functional'. The focus is generally about showing off the factions / units
Dawn of war 1 cinematic was made by none other, but..BLUR studio. You know, deadpool, star wars old republic, elder scrolls online and many more. Fun fact, they had to made cinematic in record time, like WEEKS - which is why cinematic is very good in terms of showing off game....and incredibly lore innacurate. Dawn of war 2 i think was still made by BLUR, and this time space marines have proper size and fighting enemy that does represent big threat to them. Meanwhile trailer is 100% what you get in game - the gameplay if SO SPOT ON. It's probably most honest CGI game trailer without game footage you can get.
I might be wrong, but I always took the weird stuttering slow motion of the banshees in the second trailer like dizziness. They have masks that amplify their psychic powered screams that can literally stun your nervous system.
I love these trailers, they're all well animated, but my biggest gripe is in the end when the two "Giant Mechs" fight, the fight is fantastic, but the scale is very exaggerated. both the Aeldari Wraithknight and the Imperial Knight are so much bigger than they're supposed to be. the trailer makes it seem that space marines are almost as big as ants to them, when in reality, a space marine would stand to up about their mid to upper shin. the scale they're shown in the trailer is the scale that Titans are, which the Knights are so much smaller than. but I forgive it because the third trailer is very symbolic and metaphorical instead of a literal battle like the first two game's trailers.
A lot of folks had a negative reaction to the DOW3 cinematic too, oddly enough. The decision to go into this nightmarish, dreamy intersection - rather than a hard and grounded combat scene like previous games - left some folks who don’t naturally think artistically confused. Why is he just standing there smiling? Why were all those orcs piled up? Where is this supposed to be? Why does he seem happy he’s about to get crushed? Lots of bafflement and head scratching. But most people with a grasp on a little artistic abstraction got it, and loved it.
i think the reason why DoW1 trailer still looks fantastic because it was made by legendary studio "Blur". Same studio that made SWTOR trailers and their portfolio is extensive.
To get a true warhammer experience is ever watch the movie ultramarine has john hurt in, or helserch (cant spell it), the animation gave the story live
I remember being blown away by the trailer for the warhammer fantasy title " Mark of Chaos" which came out some 10 years earlier than DoW 3. Mark of Chaos has to this day probably one of the best game trailers. The game was a bit underwhelming though.
I am sure someone has mentioned this. You have got to see The Last of Us all cutscenes. I know there is a TV Series about it now. But, the game especially the Part I remaster is so good!
Dawn of War 3 trailer was cool, really metaphorical/cryptic, but I think a lot of went over people's heads when they saw it. Yes those are the skinny marines that got made fun when this trailer came out. 8:15 "In times of doubt I shall keep faith" the kneeling space marines struggle against the wind and debris, showing them being tested in their faith and faltering.
To be fair, DOW3 failed and apparently the reason is because players couldn't figure out how a dropdown menu works, so the space marines kneeling and having their faith tested while that line is spoken in the background... might as well try to teach a gorilla how to do algebra
If you have a suggestion or a piece of content with an amazing story, please let me know, I would love to see it!

@kaizammit long time follower. I know it's not your thing, being too long but how about a directors breakdown of Fog Hill of the Five Elements?
Yes, the Dawn of War 3 cinematic was mind blowing for us Warhammer fans, and the disappointment from playing the game was immeasurable.
The excitement from the trailer was only matched by the disappointment after playing it.
I think I'm rather fortunate then because Dawn of war 3 was my intro to the series and wider franchise so I was impressed for the most part moving on
I bought it played the first level and that was the end. Nowhere near as good as 1 or 2
The game was great but focusing on hardcore RTS gameplay when your fansbase is so casual was a massive mistake
There is no Dawn of War 3 in Ba Sing Se
nah the Dreadnought stepping out of the smoke, sweeping the minigun, followed by the iconic scream
actual cinema
You mean the Sly Marbo TM communication pattern?
dawn of war 3 changed the core gameplay formula to try to attract a wider audience. specifically a competitive moba audience but in the process it alienated both sides of the already fractured dawn of war community.
DICE did similar with BF2043 and spent a lot of time back-peddling but it was a bit too late for a lot of us. I think that developers have learnt that mistake now...I hope. Battlefield may yet recover, DOW, alas... :(
@@MaulyrI'm not sure with that. Wow to this day keeps alienating different parts of it's playerbase
@@davidgill5699 Not sure where Warcraft factors in but TBH with a player base as large as WOW's you're bound to alienate some people no matter what you change or introduce...
competitive RTS gameplay is not a wider audience lol, quite the opposite
@moiseman Yep, Relic thought otherwise, though.
You said it way better than I did
The Dawn of War Series was my first real contact with WH40K. And that's when I fell in love with that universe.
Same here, really liked nr 1, loved nr 2.. no interest in touching nr 3
I hope you never get a DOW4, you don't deserve it
winter assault was my first. when i first saw the ultramarines i was like wtf is going on. such a badass experience
The dawn of war 3 cinematic is a transcendent work of art. We don’t talk about the game.
I know why. Because every time I ask "Why is DOW3 bad?" you guys give me the same lazy roundabout excuses and not a proper answer
It's their famous quote/slogan, just like in 300 movie - "Spartans, what is your profession?!" Just like in the Space Marine pledge:
What is your life?
(Yes the thin marines look silly and the proportions are wrong)
isn't it too big to be a imperial knight? more like a titan warhound?
Don't forget the best dude doing full-on leaps in terminator armor and other silly things as well.
@@AtomicBurn02 Ugh...dont remind me of that absolutely Emperor forsaken HERESY!
@@PetiteOliveeon the tabletop a imperial and wraith knight are roughly the same size. Titans in game and in the lore are much bigger than knights
6:19 yes, yes that is a Tyranid. It looks to be of the Lictor sub species. As for the marine getting back up to fight, we’ll “only in death does duty end.”
My pledge is eternal service, even in death I still serve.
@@Musabre no doubt it's harder, but still doable. Total Warhammer 3 managed to keep Daniel under wraps until they were ready to reveal him
@@heroicbob Of course.
Tim Millier did a cinematic breakdown on VFX artists react
Blur is the studio behind some of my favorite Cinematic animated works of all time, including but not limited to:
Halo Wars' Cutscenes (both games) and trailers
Halo 2 Anniversary's Cutscenes
and Most of Love Death & Robots
@DanteVerde-pt9zc that sounds like a fun watch.
@@Taggynn Oh shit they did stuff on LD&R? That's amazing but also not surprising at all in retrospect :P . Sonnie's Edge is MINDBLOWINGLY brilliant. The fluid movements and lighting in that deathmatch is just unreal.
@@Musabre They didn't just do LD&R, they're the *main minds* behind the project iirc, animating many of the episodes and being the people who organized much of it with other studios
Of course I could be wrong lol, but from what I remember, they're basically the main producers of the anthology
The dawn of war expansion trailers for " dark crusade" and " soulstorm" are cool too
The dawn of war 1 opening cinematic always brings a loyalist tear to my eye. it was my first introduction to the Warhammer universe and I haven't looked back since
The Eldar in the white with the red hair are Howling Banshees, and they have an amplifier that paralyses their enemy as they scream on the charge.
@@Musabre I feel like if they combined all the systems of dawn of war 1 with the combat of dawn of war 2 it would have a banger of a sequel.
Funny thing is they did stick with it. You'd know that if you just used the drop down menu to change the game mode. Nothing wrong with the game, just the kids with 2 IQ who don't know how to play it
The first Dawn of War intro still gives me goose bumps every time
one other comment talked about the Pariah Nexus, but just to give you a breakdown of the current official Warhammer Animations from Games Workshop in Warhammertv
Pariah Nexus: it's primarily about the Necrons, from the point of view of a Sister of Battle trying to survive in a destroyed Imperium world now overrun with Necrons. it's 3 episodes
The Exodite: it's a story about the cycle of violence and war, following the point of view of a Tau squad hunting down an Aeldari Exodite in a Battle between the Tau Empire and the Imperium of Man, as the Aeldari is trying to sabotage peace negotiations. this is also 3 episodes.
Iron Within: told from the point of View of the Imperial Guard as they are failing to defend their Planet from a Dark Eldar Raid, until space marines arrive to save them...or are they? this is just one episode
Broken Lance: it's a story told from the pov of the Imperial Knights as they defend an Imperial Knight World from a Chaos Invasion. it's also one episode
then there's Hammer and Bolter that's more of an anthology with different animation styles and stories per episode, and it's a mix of Warhammer 40k and Warhammer Age of Sigmar stories.
the last one I'm aware of that's already released is Angels of Death, which might be the longest series so far with 10 episodes and 3 prequel episodes, it follows a group of Blood Angels Space Marines.
but there's a new series coming out called "The Tithes" and I think it's gonna be an anthology.
I’ve spent thousands on plastic men, brushes and varnishes just to get hyped for these reviews.
On another note, any chance u'll go back and check out the Honkai Star rail trailers in the future?
you need to watch Death of hope trailers, the longer 20min episode is bizzare but the trailers are fantasic
Oh really!? Dude, I think you've sold me to have a look.
@@kaizammit its pretty cool visuals. but instead of orcs, eldar or tyranid, its Necrons
@@civilmean Season 2 just good a trailer (it's called "The Tithes: Sacrifice"), so awesome that they'll continue original story.
@@kaizammit also, please you have to look at the prologue for The Lord inquisitor. It's about 10 minutes long but it is amazing in every aspect
Did you notice that in the end, the bodies fall in the: III coloms?
Yes I did fella, cleaver that.
SO satisfying
In the DoW 2 one, the bigger threat is the Tyranid Hive Fleet descending upon the recruitment worlds of the Blood Ravens Chapter. Also, LOVE the Dreadnought's vox-unit saying in that inhuman and dispassionate voice "I HAVE COME TO DESTROY YOU"
I had lost hope but you were true to your word and I stuck around. thanks
Covering Dawn of War? I always stick to my word and that's one thing people can trust me on. I don't play games and I do listen to you guys, I think it's important. I hope you enjoyed it.
so happy to have discovered you through the astartes reaction and now, here we are, knowing the difference between terminators and dreadnaughts. love it. ABSOLUTLY love it
nostalgia off the chain
Thank you for watching, I really appreciate it and for the comment too!
I remember all the hype when the DoW3 Trailer dropped. It was absolutely gorgeous and me n my friends couldnt wait. Then we played the game and yea... history was made we can say that much...
What is it that you didn't like about the game?
The cutscenes from Warhammer 40k Darktide are really good and definitely worth a watch
The game covers different parts of the universe other than just space marines and stuff, but they're all beautifully animated, especially the pre-rendered ones.
Oh I see! Thank you for telling me but looking at the colours, it flowed brilliantly as a story.
I love at the end of the original dawn of war trailer. the space marine sergeant, for some reason, has ork voice lines from the game.
Alas, their players did not have more than 2 IQ and the game flopped unfairly
there is a 40k series coming out at some point XD really excited, great video
The trailer of DOW III is what got me into the hobby. THe imperial knight crashing into the eldar titan, them crashign down on the soldier. the scale.
I went and bought an imperial knight and a space marine starter set because of that.
Dawn of War was really ahead of its time 20 years ago!
As a kid, that was to awesome to see
It was the DOW1 intro video that got me interested in 3d animation. When that came out it blew my mind and is still a great watch. I even modeled, rigged and animated a dreadnaught because I was so inspired by that video.
Though on a side note, Dawn of war 3 doesn't exist. Just like DMC2. Ghost stories we tell the kids.
My man here knows his terminators from dreadnaughts, subscribed.
i casually pressed the button when i opened the tab and went to 9:26 which perfectly matches the video start)
You don't like the first two trailers?
@@kaizammit it was a missclick
These were great, I love the Warhammer universe. Fatshark had a really good cinematic for darktide world intro. also, the level 1 cinematic "I am a warrior" was really good, I'd love to see your reaction.
I'll check it out! Thanks
He didn't react to the first DoW cinematics of the "DLC's", even though they're technically their own games, each one has their own cinematic.
I love em
Can't count the numbers of times I've watched the first Dawn of War cinematic when the game came out. I still find it much more superior in video quality to the second one using "in game" graphics. And from a story and action point of view also better than the third.
The DoW 3 trailer is a very artistic one for sure.
That *"I HAVE COME TO DESTROY YOU."* from the dreadnought in the DoW2 intro is 👨🍳💋
If I'm not mistaken, the reason they suddenly get thinner at DoWIII is because of the whole Primaris gene-seed thing (which only happened a couple years ago IRL), which in short made all space marines a lot taller (and more resilient) without making them any more bulky.
I got DOW1 when in came out and all the times ive played it, ive never skipped the intro. I think its the best one...
Not ever!?
Next week I've be releasing a video where I cover every Total War Warhammer trailer, it's a long one but blooming fun
It was the DOW trailer (20 years ago now 😮) that made me think how good a CGI series could be. It was amazing at the time!
Ahhh, that makes sense!
Yeah, YEAH, YEEEEEEEAAAAAHHHH, WARHAMMER, WOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I love it when you dabble in the brutal stuff, and as a 40k...well, compared to others, I'm a noob, but, after like 4,000+ hours of listening to the lore, but, let's say fan, I can't be happier when I see you peering into our beloved world :)))
if you like this, especially dawn of war 3 you should definitely take a look at the horus heresy cinematic trailer
So they are replicating the a game mechanic? That's clever and I like that.
Only one thing for it: gotta go back and do a full dissection of the DOW 1 and 2 cinematics!
That going to be a thick boi
The more deaths is how the chaos gods become more poweful or at least gain enough energy to break the seal that has them locked up
Ahh a time where drop pods didn't burst into the ground but actually had boosters to lighten the drop. Dawn of war 1 was so good
you forgot the Dark Crusade and Soulstorm trailer. You should also watch the 9th edition trailer and the 10th edition trailer. in the dawn of war series there is also the dawn of war 2 retribution.
I really love DoW 3 cinematic it gave me chills when I first watched it, unfortunately it's just as good as the game is bad
Game isn't bad. Learn how a dropdown menu works
If you ever decide to watch any of the trailers for some of the Warhammer Fantasy games, i'd recommend the trailer for Mark of Chaos (and its expansion Battle March)
All Trailer for Total War Warhammer next week!
@@kaizammit Neat to hear. Though i do have to say, while i like the Total War Warhammer games and the trailers, a lot of them are very 'functional'. The focus is generally about showing off the factions / units
So much nostalgia from the DoW1 trailer,
Thr horus heresy warhammer 40k cinematic is breath taking, you should di that one it's incredible.
He did that one long ago mate.
Youve gotta do the Immortal Empires trailer. One of the best warhammer trailers out there.
They changed to 4cm tall minis regarding space marines, also got a bit redesign, not so bulky now
gaming has came a long way since the era of the og xbox that i grew up with
Dawn of war 1 cinematic was made by none other, but..BLUR studio.
The screeching warriors are called Banshees
Dawn of War 3 cinematic is one of the best trailers of anything, ever.
Love the vids
I loved Dow 1 and 2 I haven’t played 3, but the first two are so so good 😍
Anyone who tells you 3 is bad, is just mad because they didn't understand how a dropdown menu works
"That is the coolest thing I have ever s-" and then he saw the coolest thing he had ever seen.
I've covered them a lot on this channel.
"I really wish this game was good!"
Man... You have no idea how much I wish that too 😭
DoW 1 is/was my favorite RTS
To get a true warhammer experience is ever watch the movie ultramarine has john hurt in, or helserch (cant spell it), the animation gave the story live
If you haven't I highly recommend the Astartes animation.
40k has always had extremely good cinematics
Agreed! Astartes movie is crazy good and mindblowing given it was made by 1 guy.
It's on the channel fella, one of my first videos when I started hence the video format is different.
@kaizammit okay it's a long one but what about the Wh40k Helsreach?
I remember being blown away by the trailer for the warhammer fantasy title " Mark of Chaos" which came out some 10 years earlier than DoW 3. Mark of Chaos has to this day probably one of the best game trailers. The game was a bit underwhelming though.
I am sure someone has mentioned this. You have got to see The Last of Us all cutscenes. I know there is a TV Series about it now. But, the game especially the Part I remaster is so good!
It's on my list so I'm sure you'll see it eventually ✌🏻💪🏻🙏🏻
I loved and still love the fact that Dawn of War 3 trailer is full metaphorical, I was overwhelmed with it. And then the game happened.
If only you activated more than 2 braincells when you played the game. You would've been like me and had fun
