  • Have you ever found yourself constantly chasing after the next big thing, the next milestone, the next shiny object that will finally make you happy? I have, and I know I'm not alone.
    We live in a society that glorifies material possessions, success, and growth. We're constantly bombarded with messages that tell us we need more, we need to do more, and we need to be more. And so, we tirelessly strive towards these goals, convinced that they hold the key to our happiness.
    But the truth is, happiness doesn't come from material possessions, success, or growth. In fact, it's quite the opposite. I've come to realize that the more I focus on external factors, the more I feel unfulfilled and dissatisfied. It's only when I let go of the constant need for more that I find true contentment.
    So, if you're feeling like you're always chasing after the next big thing, take a step back and ask yourself what really matters. Is it the material possessions, the success, and the growth, or is it the simple things that bring you joy?

    Nice job Seve. Along these lines, I have often thought ‘What is the happiest I have ever been?’ If it is not yesterday or today, then why am I not as happy as I was at that time? I have acquired more “things” and experiences, but if I am not THE happiest today, then the “things” I have acquired have not helped me gain happiness. In the past 10 years [I am 72], I have created a rule that for every thing I acquire, would I want that if I had to give up two things? It has helped me not acquire more “things” I don’t really need. Thanks, this was a great video.

      Great comment, Lance! Hope everything is fine 😊 I similarly try to think "the best day of my life is today" as it's the only one that is real an actually happening. This way I focus on making it the best I can and not wish I lived in the past

    I've always dreamed about living in the countryside and having a small hobby farm, but I need to stay in the big city for the job that I like. The city life makes me feel like I can't be truly happy right here and now, but on the other hand I wouldn't be happy without an interesting job.

    Our family used to collect all the broken bits and leftover pieces of games in a box and we children used to use these items to play "War" (Terrible, I know, but it was the early Sixties and there was a Cold War always raging in the news - and we were children.), using the bric-a-brac from the box to create armies and forts: some of the best childhood memories ever. Most often, the wanting is much more exciting than the having - today's life lesson which has taken me many years to understand. Thanks, as always, for sharing this amazing version of Seve.

    Consumerism has been the big lie for me in the U.S. I chased after more for much of my life.
    Now I find getting rid of the 'more' stuff brings me more comfort than having had it in the first place.
    The idea that stuff you own own's you is very accurate. Rather than thinking how much stuff belongs to you consider how much stuff you belong to.
    How much stuff do you want to give your life and your freedom to? Over time it becomes a golden prison.
    There is no end to new stuff. But contentment is never found there.
    Contentment for me has been found in my spiritual connection with God. This is above the world of stuff.
    Peace brother. Thanks for the video!

    thanks for this. In my head i'm always tempted to think about 'what's next' or 'what more do i need' or 'what more should i be doing'. i've struggled so much with low self esteem because of this! not feeling like i'm enough or doing enough. listening to you is very affirming!!!!!

      I think I felt same too. I believe when we are taught from our childhood to chase success and be a number 1 and be the best. I had to erase previous scripts that I believed told by parents and people around me. I no longer live a hurried life.

    For me, it's not so much about material things but experiences and subjects, I take at school sometime. For example, anything to do with health or psychology, I am like, maybe this could of helped me in some way or someone else. But I kind of remember one of the things my mom said, to me growing up, "Don't make someone else's problems your problems. It isn't your job to solve everybody's problems, it's your job to deal with your own problems!" It's hard though when you have close family and friends and a lot of the time in solving my own problems, I end up able to help someone else so, it is kind of a push and pull method where you have to get invested but not to invested. Also, I had to do a Bucket List assignment for a bereavement class last summer. We had to make a list o things we wanted to do, how we were going to do them, and achieve them before it was too late. But also, a backup in case something did not workout. For example, I would like to travel around Europe and see distant family and friends but, if I am to nervous or unwell maybe, I can visit family and friends in my own country. Or, if I can't spend a year on a goat farm spend a day/week and work on a farm where, I live.
    Also, such as the media portrays once someone does this thing all there problems are solved but in reality that is not how it works. It takes commitment and dealing with self-doubt. And even if that goal is achieved it's fleeting moment it comes and goes.

    • @SunnyKindJourney
      @SunnyKindJourney  Год назад +3

      Well said! I think self-doubt is something we all have to deal with and it's not only when we are young, it's all the time. Through competence and experiences we can gain the confidence!

    I love the ideas about karma from ancient eastern traditions. Life will always happen so as to give you the opportunity to rebalance imbalances caused by previous actions (current or preceding lifetimes, yours or someone else’s). So you don’t need to obsess about what you’ve done in the past or should do in the future, life will take care of it. Setting goals and making plans to get there can be very useful, but more from the perspective of developing intentional living and using one’s talents to contribute, somehow, in one’s own environment. Detachment and quiet from the acceptance of life as it is can then balance the joy and enthusiasm to go out in the world and be active. This might still feel incomplete without love or friendship, depending on one’s personality. You make good vids, thank you!

    Hey Seve, do you think simple living is sustainable in countries like the US that have very little social safety net? How do you reconcile not saving, or saving little, for old age? Thanks! -Malachi

    • @SunnyKindJourney
      @SunnyKindJourney  Год назад +1

      Hii! Can't say specifically for the US as I don't live there and don't know how things work. However, I highly believe preparing for tougher times physically, mentally, financially etc. is very important. Cutting maybe $100-200 of expenses per month and investing those to for example S&P500 can make crazy financial safety net for anyone over the years. I love living slowly & simply but still try to be smart 😊

    I like this approach to life, but I suspect it would be poison to my dating life. This lifestyle is like a masterfully designed automobile that only drives vertically - every aspect of it artfully designed, yet fundamentally unappealing.

      @@SunnyKindJourney As men, we bear the burden of performance. Most of us can't get by on our looks alone! In my view, this is the mechanism of constraint on contentment. This reality manifests in dating, where you cannot be content if you don't get what you want, and you can't get what you want without fulfilling your biological burden of performance. In my view, this is why any philosophy of contentment remains a perfect circle in a square world. Of course, I would love to be proven wrong.
