I am 76 and been playing my guitar and banjo since the 1960s. I am so happy that Sierra is reappraising the old tunes and songs, and keeping the old bluegrass so alive. I am old enough to say your playing is enhanced by your lovely smile, and beautiful face. Thanks from Australia.
I'm absolutely in love with your musicallity, and even the way you speak and express things to your audience. And of course all that joy! It's unbelievable
I listened to this song (or should I say “sawng”?) dozens of times trying to figure it out on my violin and I never realized there was such a thing as split tuning for mandolin until now. So cool!!!!!🤩🤠
She's so good l can't help but laugh. She's hilariously good. Her joy at doing what she loves is quite evident. God bless her. I surrender: SUBSCRIBED. My friend just walked in the house and said, "Listening to her AGAIN?" YES. ABSOLUTELY. Beautiful music is always worth the listen!!
What I really love about this kid is that there isn't a single fret on that instrument that's safe! If I were that old Gibson, I'd take a good deep breath when I saw her coming.
More wonderful insights from Sierra for us mere mortals. Nice tip of the hat to Ricky. So much joy and memories, from New South to County Boy and back to the traditional. One of a kind talent, and beautiful human being, like Sierra, who will carry on mandolin (and perhaps guitar) to the next level. 👏
WHOA! I have never thought of using alternate tunings on mandolin before and I have been playing mandolin longer then I have guitar. This was very eye opening thank you Sierra!
The point you made about the access ability on you tube is spot on. Being able to get the voicings right, priceless. This is the age of stringed enlightenment. I remember having to learn songs by picking up that needle above the turntable and painstakingly figure out the chords etc.
Bluegrass is actually highly influenced by "Ulster Scotch" Presbyterians that migrated in droves to the USA in the 1700s mainly from North East Ireland..The.Monroe's were "Ulster Scotch"...but if you go back far enough the Monroe name came from Gaelic Irish...just like other "Ulster Scots" names like Knox, Niel, Lennox, McCrea amongst many others
Sierra, thanks for this Get up John rendition. From your style and phenomenal mastery of this instrument, I can just hear you playing Irish music as well. Thanks and stay safe
Hi Sierra ... you are one of my musical heroes. We met briefly in Olathe some years ago; I asked if you wanted a dulcimer... . Thank you for all your amazing music which has carried me through hard times and good times too. Gib Sosman
saw Sierra Hull in Maryland on Valentines Day weekend. She is a freakin beast. I’m sitting there wondering how the hell am I just learning about her????? Crazy amazing talent. And such a powerhouse of a voice. The world needs to HEAR more of this woman. I went at the Strathmore to see the great Jake Shimabukuro. And was blessed to hear Sierra Hull.
I lost a finger in 2014. Now I'm a guitar player . I used to teach and taught alongside a teacher who played with Ralph Stanley , Jim and Jessee , also many more . He was a Mandolin and Banjo player in his 50's I was 20 odd years old but I bought a mandolin and it just made sense to me , I was reluctant to dive to deep in bluegrass but wanted to , being he was "The Guy" I never did I bought one recently ... Love it more than guitar ... It's the tuning in 5ths I think is a break from guitars tuning I only lost my right pinky thank the Lord ... Thanks for this
That is SO cool! I was just thinking, last night, that there must be some cool ways to tune the double strings to different notes, and now, just a few hours later, this video shows up on my feed! ..... I guess I'm in tune with the mandolin universe or something! 😃
WoW!!You totally crushed that with little to no effort at all.Enjoy the gifts you have and the ones you've worked for,you truly have a great talent in music!!
Head spinning. My grandfather was a player in the Alaskan Gold Rush. Mandolin, banjo and fiddle were his way to riches playing the dance halls and brothels. I remember him when you play.
Wow. LIfe just got harder. ;-) I did not know a mando could be played that cleanly. And once heard, it cannot be unheard. Thank you for posting this. I'd better get back to practicing now.
I’ve got a two grandson on my lap. we’re both mesmerized. I’ve played guitar for fifty years. Maybe this boy will play mandolin. I love this tune! Sierra is UH! MAY! ZING!
I played a couple of tracks from Ricky's Bluegrass Rules last weekend on Trail Mix on Kansas Public Radio, but did If I Love and Rawhide. Get up John is great, too. Greatly enjoying playing your new album on my shows.
wow this is SUPER cool didn't even know this type of 'split' tuning existed. like tune a lot, as a guitar player tempted to learn Mando someday but also as a guitar player intimidated going from 4th-based tuning to 5th-based tuning. also your southern accent is delightful.
It must be an absolute blast to be able to play like that. When I was in college at Texas Tech one of my new friends in our dorm made a mandolin and played it. He could also play bluegrass fiddle and guitar. Another blind friend in the next room played the twelve string guitar so I was surrounded by great music. Keith also started a bluegrass studies program at another nearby college which still exists today. I occasionally accompanied him to local bluegrass festivals and fiddle contests. Many years later I had the pleasure of seeing Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys perform at the Grand Ol’ Opry. I embarrassed myself by standing up and shouting out a song request to Bill, failing to remember that the show was being broadcast live throughout the country on radio and television. Bill glared at me. I was mortified. 😖
Oh, nice, on the lower bluesy sound, and the additional stuff you added. How about finger quicker lickers..lol. 😅 whewee. Honestly, i have to change your hand names on every song. 😂 Your keeping the kids anti-depressed. I think they need to open the mandolin sales up. Your a nice, fun teacher, too ! Thank you ! Love your joy and laughter a lot !
Very interesting, I have thought about doing something like this( different tuning) on a 12 string guitar, maybe something like Renaissance lute tuning or Baroque lute tuning, since I lean more to the classical side of music. GREAT playing you did there, you ROCK girl !!! Stay safe my friend, Rock On & God Bless!!!
I remember the first time I met you Sierra, in St. Jo Missouri, you gave me a hug and signed my pickguard I'd just pulled off the new mando I'd recently bought. I had been carrying it around and jammin a bit, when Danny from the Grasscals walked up and asked me if I knew "Get Up John," he was gonna invite me up to jam with the band, but sadly I had not worked it up. That night when I went home I discovered that split tuning and I started workin that sucker up so if the opportunity ever presented itself again, I wouldn't have to let it slip on by. Great tune, and as always I'm just impressed by your clear and perfect tone with the fluidity of your fingers and pick. Absolutely stunning.
I've been practicing for a solid year. Thinking I'm getting better. Then I watch this. Oh my. Well -- it nothing else, it's inspirational. Time to double- and triple-down on my practice sessions. :-)
That is a wow I had to hit the like then on hit it and then hit again so I could give two likes. The top strings turnings give the mandolin another creative voice in the mix. It just hits the spot and keep on getting up. Wonderful playing made my day! Thanks!
Fantastic Sierra! This would sound great on Reubens train! Your improvisational skills are amazing! Im niece to Doug and Rodney Dillard and have really enjoyed flatpicking guitar over the years w my family! My Brother is v talented on Banjo.
Hello Dear Sierra Hull, I first saw you sing with 2 gentleman on Larry Black's diner series; Larry's Country Diner! I see you have finished growing up from a young woman to a real woman now and you are stunningly beautiful. My Goodness how lovely you've become. Bless your dear heart. I subscribed immediately without yet hearing the song you will play now so you have another follower for sure lovely woman. God Bless, Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas. I guess when you sang that song on the Diner you meant the ending words; "Sierra's going to be okay!" Wonderful and I will always enjoy every sound you play for always lovely woman. You are absolutely adorable!!! Ray C. Florida, Love you FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Talented doesn’t even begin to describe her, she is a phenomena, a total reset to the rules, a game changer.
She absolutely rocks this thing!
I'm absolutely in love with your musicallity, and even the way you speak and express things to your audience. And of course all that joy! It's unbelievable
3:57 - 4:12 is an example of amazing touch. It's so freakin hard to get a mandolin to sound that clean, graceful, and dynamic. Super rad!!
ABSOLUTELY. Beautiful music is always worth the listen!!
hahaha. if someone walked into my house I'd hear "listening to her again" too. Lots!
Great music that gives you shivers up the spine......that's why she is on my hifi system alot. Love her. She makes my paradigm speakers come alive.
Wow!!
What I really love about this kid is that there isn't a single fret on that instrument that's safe! If I were that old Gibson, I'd take a good deep breath when I saw her coming.
Grady, just tossed mine out of the damm window!
That's an interesting way to say she has mastered and knows where every single fret on that instrument is!!
Your joy is so infectious ! And that's a good thing in music .
Unbelievable! I never dreamed anyone could be this good.
What an amazing talent! Keep making beautiful music, this world needs a lot more of this. Be blessed.
Thank's for keeping this music alive and also all the traditional country music going strong!
This is skill, lots and lots of practice and Sierra Hull... wonderful combination!!!
Absolutely awesome
I watch this video again and again. Awesome improvisation. Thanks Sierra.

Wow! Sierra you just amaze and inspire every time. Love the tuning. Thank you so much!
Geeezzz.. like a true rockchick. Superb playing. Thanks i’ll throw mine out of the window.
I can’t watch her without my heart turning into that stuff you take out of a pumpkin before you carve it up!
Wish You'd Come Back To Clayton NY Loved To Hear You Again

Cool tune. First time I've heard it. The split tuning gives the mandolin a whole new sound.
Been Irish ive never heard mandolin being played like that im use to the ballad and folk mandolin sound, that was amazing

Sierra, thanks for this Get up John rendition.

I can’t play a mandolin but that mandolin has been had. You own it. Holy smokes. Hitting those harmonics every time is spot on. Wow. Nice.
Hi Sierra ... you are one of my musical heroes. We met briefly in Olathe some years ago; I asked if you wanted a dulcimer... . Thank you for all your amazing music which has carried me through hard times and good times too. Gib Sosman

That escalated quickly! I went from zero to love this song after 3 plays of this vid which led to hearing every other rendering of it!

Wow! I started playing mandolin a little over a year ago (fell in love with it) and I hope one day I can play this good!!
Totally fun! I kept waiting for the bass and the rest of the backup to fall in behind her...nice work...

Outstanding. Thanks for sharing.

This began with Bill Monroe. Study the master and you cannot go wrong.
that's a whole lot of fun! Thank you for sharing this!
Love my cousin. She the best in blue grass . god bless seria

Very cool, tuning. It sounds dark and trippy, very different from most bluegrass fare. Thank you, Sierra.
Oh cool picking and thanks for the special tuning lesson. Sounds great! ♥
