I should mention that as Rob Jorg has pointed out below, a cable release would have made timing of the shots much easier than my usual method of two second timer and mirror lock up, which is ingrained in my shooting method. I actually had one of these in my bag but in my efforts to make a very rushed last minute film, I completely forgot about it. Perhaps I should start using it again as best practice :-) I would love to hear your comment on whether I should do more of the minimalist type of image for this channel.
25 years ago I got a call for a shoot that had to happen RIGHT NOW, and so I ran around like a crazy man and put all my stuff out behind my car, and then had to go back and get on more small thing, and then ran out and jumped in my car and....backed right over one of my camera bags (and it had to be the one with my 300mm f/4 in it). All I did was break a filter. Hazard of the trade, I suppose...
Wonderful image. What I enjoyed most about your video was how you honestly shared your own frustrations with finding inspiration or concerns of being cliché. Speaking for myself, I suffer from the same frustrations. While I don't like to see any artist suffering from "artist block," I do find solace knowing I'm not alone.
It’s impossible not to have an interesting, informative and enjoyable video off you Simon. I really liked your final image and I think it captured the mood and story of the day perfectly.
Thanks Mark, this weekend almost beat me mentally and creatively. After Norway it's the photo equivalent of going cold turkey. However, I am really pleased with this shot!
Very much enjoy that style of image. I live just a little further south from here on the coast, Mersea Island, and this style is something I relate to strongly and play around with myself. Well done for creating a very worthwhile image in less than obviously inspiring conditions.
Thanks Martin, I took a leap of faith putting the mount around the image at the end, but it seams to have gone down OK. I think this type of image works better when displayed with a mount.
You need to get yourself a Morrison’s “sweet corn” bag for life and stick your camera bag in it when it’s near the water. Mines has saved my life on many occasions. 😂
Lovely image Simon and a story well told. And yes, you really should have had your bag way further up the beach or on your back.... we've all been there though! lol
That looked like very difficult conditions Simon but I did like the final shot. I am trying to develop a more minimalistic style myself so I found this fascinating.
I don't have a style Chris, though I sometimes wish that I did have. That aid, it also nice to be a good all rounder! For me, it's probably the result of admiring too many photographs over many years. My advice to anyone wanting to develop a style is to not view what other have produced so that you are in no way influenced by them. The trouble with this approach though, is that you might not progress without anything to aspire to?!
Simon Booth - good advice Simon. I try not to look too much at other photographers work for fear of being influenced too heavily, the exception being Michael Kenna who is a huge inspiration to me. It's difficult to get the balance between influence and inspiration.
Nice minimalistic blk & white 👍. If you come down this way again nearer winter for a sunrise let me know and I will show you Bawdsey. It’s excellent for this kind of photography with superb sea defences. It’s one of my favourite places for sunrise and detailed shots and long exposures
another nice vid Simon. You have a lovely relaxed, natural style to your vids. Well done mate! Thomas Heaton once said to me " Volgging isn't easy. The hardest art is making it LOOK easy"! True that and you do a great job, even when things aren't that perfect!RegardsEwan
Love your approach to getting your images, and love the final result I like these kind of photos I must find a local beach that gives me what I am looking for. Can’t believe you leave your bag laying around like you do, it’s not the first time you got it wet is it haha...
Paul Compton PDphotography thanks Paul. I can be a clumsy oaf at times. Im always leaving it in silly places, I'm just too absorbed in getting the shot! My was once swept away at St Michaels Mount...and yes it floated! Good luck finding your beach!
Nice blog mate, the final image made all the effort worth while! BnW minimalist seascapes on a dull day, what could go wrong? apart from a wet camera bag! subscribed!
Hi Philip. I do often give settings but they are so specific to the day in terms of weather / light so every day would likely require different settings. If you drop me an email I will look on my catalogue when I'm home and get back to you.
Hi Svetlana. My focus point would have been the structure because the the pebbles would have moved during the wave action, so little point in focusing on those. My aperture was f13 @ 1/3 of a second 200ISO
Hi Patrick, thanks for dropping by again and good to hear from you. It's not uncommon for my bag to go for a swim! It once floated in the sea at St Micheal's Mount during a workshop that I was leading!
when shooting reseeding water, put your camera in timelapse mode and take a photo every 3 sec or so for like 50 shots in total or as much as you feel like. then cull them at home. some of them will be spot on
Thanks Andy, glad you like the shot. I'm afraid my pockets are only so deep and the frequency of needing spikes or snow feet don't outweigh the cost and added things to carry or remember to take along. I've used CD's before but in the end, I just get on with it and manage. On my last video someone said I should have an L Bracket, which I was doing fine without, but decided to take the plunge, which set me back £350.00. My camera and lenses are starting to age too!
Great result and vlog Simon...! Simon, the Tone Master. You have a good eye and lots of practice in the field. Composition and tonal values at its best...Picture Language I call it. To draw is to include, to photograph is to exclude. This image can be in a series, as good as: Tree Before Waterfall on Mull. Greetings from Denmark...Keep minimalistic in dull weather...!

As a huge fan of minimalist landscape photography, I'd love to see you do more!
When shooting digital I use the self timer all the time but now I use my iphone to trigger the camera more and more.
Simple turned amazing! Outstanding photographic ending! As always your pictures reach deep into the mind heart and soul!
Final image was awesome 👍Well worth the wait, thx for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it
Always lovely, Simon. You inspire all of us to think simple (and keep our bags above the wrack line).
My bag has been for a swim so many times Peter, you would not believe it!

Keep it up Simon I like very much what you are doing !
Thanks for checking out the older videos 👍
Always great to see you back in our great county, lovely image in such challenging conditions plus a wet bag.
Thanks Brian. I fear the wet bag syndrome is becoming my thing!
Great shot Simon - your perseverance certainly paid off! Thanks for sharing...
Try hard enough and the rewards should follow!
Lovely image. Very serene
Thanks for the video Simon. Always appreciate your insights and your perspectives.
Thanks Jay. I should have used my cable release though, but forgot in all the rush...there's always soemthing!
Still playing catch up. That was a very worthwhile shot and so glad you avoided the obvious.
That was certainly an old one Iain
Beautiful minimalist image Simon.
Inspiring video, would love to see more like this.
Thanks Mike...Sorry for the terribly late reply!
Always a pleasure watching your vlogs Simon
Many thanks for that.

Glad to be of service to you. You are certainly not alone!
well worth the wait, the weather, the water drops and the wet bag lol - lovely final image Simon :)
Thank you Kev
Enjoyed that Simon, thanks! Simple shot but very effective.
Glad you liked it Andrew. I'm never quite sure if the film is good enough!
Always great video, Ever photo that is beautiful images.👌 Thank! Simon.
Thank you as always!
Simon Booth Thank!
A beautiful image. Well worth the effort.

I was watching the video and biting my nails for your backpack! Lovely image though. I think the conditions were spot on for the black and white.
I agree Diego, the colour version wasn't anywhere near as nice. And as for my back back, when I did notice it, it was in the sea again!
Very much enjoy that style of image. I live just a little further south from here on the coast, Mersea Island, and this style is something I relate to strongly and play around with myself. Well done for creating a very worthwhile image in less than obviously inspiring conditions.

this is pure art
Thanks Alwin, black and white does tend to lend itself better to that category!
Wow. So much trouble. But a truly evocative and beautiful image! Very fine.
Thanks again for watching all the old stuff Joseph
wonderful result! inspiring
Thanks Karl
Nice simple shot there
A great vlog and a beautiful image Simon
Thanks Nicholas
Lovely photo
Thank you! Cheers!
Minimal and great composition i thought it suited black and white too .
Great video 👍🤓
Thanks Paul. It certainly did. The colour version was poor by comparison.
You need to get yourself a Morrison’s “sweet corn” bag for life and stick your camera bag in it when it’s near the water. Mines has saved my life on many occasions. 😂
Thanks M. I do have a shower cap on most occasions. You should try one of those!
Lovely image Simon and a story well told. And yes, you really should have had your bag way further up the beach or on your back.... we've all been there though! lol
Thanks Julian. It seems I can't go out anymore without some form of mishap!
All part of the "experience". I'm with you on the pain on getting water on your filters though....so fustrating sometimes!
Beautiful image, love it!
Thank you Simon. A shot by the skin of my teeth I think!

Thanks Kevin, that's a kind offer!
Love it Simon!! I feel your pain with the spray and the rain!!! So annoying! Beautiful simple shot tho!
Thanks Tom, a very frustrating session indeed!

Thomas hit the nail on the head then when he said that. I find the whole thing very challenging but strangely rewarding at the same time! thanks Ewan
Perseverance paid off. Great shot in the end. hope your gear stayed dry.
It did Tom, thanks for asking :-)
I liked the square crop on the image. I'm not usually a big fan of square but that suited.
I thought so too Phillip!
Lovely shot Simon. No excuse for the bag though 😬👍
I know James, tell me about it!
Lovely image. Subscribed. :)
Cheers for that Ollie, it means a lot!

Thanks for taking the time to write. Pleased to report that camera bags do float...to a point!
Beautiful final image. What is the structure out in the water called, what is it?
Thanks Jack. It's a groyne, the end section of the old beach erosion control.
Love it mate top quality watch. I shot a similar minimalistic vid last week, love that style. cheers
Thanks for that. I am pleased with it and should possibly do more of this type of image. They do appeal to me!
Just found out about your wonderful channel!! Keep up the great work :)
Thank you so much!
Great
would have been nice to know the camera settings .
Hi Philip. I do often give settings but they are so specific to the day in terms of weather / light so every day would likely require different settings. If you drop me an email I will look on my catalogue when I'm home and get back to you.
Hi, Simon. I know this video is old now but still. What were your settings and where did u place your focus point?
Hi Svetlana. My focus point would have been the structure because the the pebbles would have moved during the wave action, so little point in focusing on those. My aperture was f13 @ 1/3 of a second 200ISO
Thank you, Simon!
Nice!! Hopefully the equipment in the bag wasn't damaged by the tide coming in???

But there's no fun or satisfaction in that is there?
@@SimonBoothPhotography you still have to manually set everything
You need to use snow feet on your tripod; they really do prevent tripod movement on sand and in water. I do like a good minimal. Cheers.
Thanks Andy, glad you like the shot. I'm afraid my pockets are only so deep and the frequency of needing spikes or snow feet don't outweigh the cost and added things to carry or remember to take along. Yeah, someone one said, Photography ain't cheap, how right they were :)
I purchased a Brunt photographic brolly with clamp for such conditions. See Michael Breitung vlog re, the above...
Thanks Allan. I'm cautious, I once saw someone lose a full rig during a freak gust of wind with a brolly. OK for calm days I'm sure!

Thanks for your review and kind words.
One thing I realised is we need to keep eye on our camera bag...
So often is the case :-)
buy a remote shutter, cable version, only cost 10-15 euro or something like that on ebay.
Hi Rob, thanks for pointing out my silly oversight. I have pinned a comment about this at the top.
2 second time and mirror lockup works too but im rusted on the cable release,.
I should be really, put it down to lazyness!
