Family Living Off the Grid in a Tiny House in New Zealand

  • Tom, Sarah, and their daughter Neesa live in a 20sqm off-grid tiny house on a property on the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand. Instead of paying rent, they share the work of looking after the land with the owners, and both families share in the farm’s abundant produce. We were inspired by how much happier they’ve found themselves by living with less.
    Tom is a medical doctor and Sarah is an illustrator but both have chosen to reduce their work to almost nothing in order to have more time to focus on living well - a lifestyle choice that is more possible for many of us than we might think. This little 6-minute film has been one of our most popular to date - perhaps because it describes a lifestyle so many of us would love to be living.

      if this is an essential and crucial to both of you. Start it ourselves! Do not convincing and forcing people to do and live our way. Change ourselves first, do it fir the sake bringing good to your partner out of love. It's hard, there are difficulties thoughts, ideas, dreams..... all need actions. In case anyone is wondering, the poem he refers to is "Wild Geese" by Mary Oliver:
    You do not have to be good.
    You do not have to walk on your knees
    for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.
    You only have to let the soft animal of your body
    love what it loves.
    Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
    Meanwhile the world goes on.
    Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
    are moving across the landscapes,
    over the prairies and the deep trees,
    the mountains and the rivers.
    Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
    are heading home again.
    Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
    the world offers itself to your imagination,
    calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -
    over and over announcing your place
    in the family of things.

      @twinkitten1 7 лет назад +9

      TheDtfamu89 you get bored of living one way and get inquisitive about how the other way feels or want to live another way. I believe this is just the human mind or human nature...always looking for more, or a reason for something new and different and being inquisitive and unsettled and thinking of different things and change.....this can be both ways some rich people get bored of living with all their materials and want to scale down to cut back cost etc and become more grounded see life in a different perspective etc and some poor people wish to live life with material wealth to see how it is or make them feel, and some people just like their situation as is whether rich living or "poor" simple living .......

    • @twinkitten1
      @twinkitten1 7 лет назад +7

      Thats why in my opinion people should experiment living with both lifestyles for a while and then decide after which one is mostly them or can mostly relate to. You find sometimes when rich or material wealthy people get old they sometimes scale down to more simple living probably because they realize that they will soon be leaving this earth and all those materials things they had are not really that important anymore ... You find people living in poor situations want to get out of it because of being uneducated, because simple living in those cases mean less money which means less opportunities especially for a rounded education etc which then begets crime and other negativity which creates an unwholesome environment to live in and they want to get out of that but poor EDUCATED (and by educated I mean to correct things of course, cause u can be educated to anything) people may create a different environment to live in similar to how these people are living....

    • @rockie6890

      doing what we want doesn't mean doinv this. I wouldn't like to, i like having facilities and access. my boyfriend has lived technology his whole life and wouldn't imagine to leave it either. it's not what everyone wants, not what everyone is made for. so i don't believe it would be good
      if people meditated, got time to rethink stuff, came closer to self-awareness - that would give a lot of hope for the world. but not getting back to nothing

      Not really - do you know how many people live in china? Or in a big city like New York? Not everyone can live a bourgeois farm life - there simply isn't room for everyone to have an acre or two of yuppie farm land, and if there was there wouldn't be and forests or open spaces not occupied by roads and people. It's a nice dream but cities and population density are actually what's saving the forrests and leaving undeveloped space. It's a great fantasy but if we all lived this way the forrests abd evo systems would be devastated. I know that's hard for yuppie hippies to understand but it's a privlege to have nature around and not realistic to think that we can all have it except if we green cities.

    I really loved this. I’m working toward this with my partner, we’re saving money and we actually already have land which is a miracle. My son is so excited and we have a friend who knows all the rules/regulations in the area because they’ve already done the same thing. It’s exciting, and I’m so happy for this family. He’s absolutely right, it is the blueprint, we need simpler lives and the more “primitive” we go back the happier we are I’ve noticed in other people as well as myself.

    Working for rent was what in Europe was called "servidão"(from wich "servant" derived); people lived in shacks and huts in another man's land (generaly, a noble man) and had to work to have the right to live there. The only difference I see here is that this couple may leave if they wish, and the "servos" couldn't leave. Strange how the world gets around and someone in fact prefers to live as a servant, free from the responsabilities of owning something.

      What you describe is called feudalism. The difference here is that these people are not working on the land producing capital for the land owner, they are feeding themselves.

    • @louismartin9514
      @louismartin9514 6 лет назад +4

      They are free to stay or to go. They work to feed themselves; not to pay for unnecessary items. They create positive profit from low turnover. Pretty good set up for someone suffering from a debilitating illness like social or general anxiety disorder. Extra emotional capital is preserved every month when bills are way less than income. For me the biggest obstacle is family support to transition from living inside of the machine to living freely and more abundantly outside of the machine. I am not sure I want to give them up. I shared this video with them. Let’s see if it nudges farther along my line of thinking-living can be better with less attachment to ‘things’.

    • @CasianaCarmazan
      @CasianaCarmazan 6 лет назад +2

      Maria Nunes wow so silly you’d compare them to slaves when they live so freely and they’re not caught up in a 9 to 5. They work to feed themselves and they have what they need, they enjoy life and read Mary Oliver poetry and probably other poets as well.

    I am sure this couple is much happier than many of us living in cities (a euphemism of concrete jungles). They live in peace with the nature, grow some veggies, have some hens to take care, enjoy the breeze, does not have to worry about mortgages, credit card payments, missing the deadlines at work, or being fired from the job. Their mental health must be much better than many of ours. If only more people took to this way of living!

  • @jen4394
    @jen4394 7 лет назад +5

    From the comments in this video, and in every video that promotes an alternative lifestyle, I understand there are a lot of people that feel like their whole world and status quo is being attacked. The society tells us that this kind of people are hypocrites, because they still rely on some things. I say so what? Did they come to criticize your own life? If they are happy, what's the problem? I didn't hear them brag about anything or critisize anyone. They just expressed how this whole change makes them feel. People make choices for themselves and since they don't hurt anybody, I don't get the hate. Plus, this kind of people get lot more criticism than stressed workaholics, who are considered normal for some reason.

I never feel sorry for people who are stressed out of their mind because of their loans, mortgage, huge bills, and just working every moment of their life to make ends meet. It's insane, and they chose to live like that. There's no security when the life you're living is making you sick and miserable.

    I would love it if documentary makers could find people who are from working class backgrounds with very little money or the education living like this or is this way of life exclusive to well educated middle class people like this with all the advantages that class brings, these people start with a huge advantage in life as there is a motivation that comes from their upbringing that gives them an advantage of being better educated and having the confidence of it being easier to take the risks to change things that middle class educated background brings.
    What about those folks from less educated, less well off backgrounds who are not instilled from a young age with that confidence who want to live this way but have always lived on the knife edge of vulnerability that these types have never experienced just perceived? The commonality to all these types of documentaries is that the people in them all seem to have started life financially and socially several rungs up the ladder, it does come across as slightly smug and typical middle class to be honest

      Glad to see someone address this. Privilege seems to be a big taboo topic in the permaculture community. I've spent some time in a permaculture hub in Australia and everyone I met was white, had an academic or arts background and earned enough money to buy land, trees, build infrastructure. Nobody ever addressed the fact that huge amounts of privilege and money got them where they are.
      The guy in this video is a GP so surely they have to have some savings as a backup for when the work for rent agreement ends.

    Wild Geese
    You do not have to be good.
    You do not have to walk on your knees
    for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.
    You only have to let the soft animal of your body
    love what it loves.
    Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
    Meanwhile the world goes on.
    Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
    are moving across the landscapes,
    over the prairies and the deep trees,
    the mountains and the rivers.
    Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
    are heading home again.
    Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
    the world offers itself to your imagination,
    calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting
    over and over announcing your place
    in the family of things.
    from Dream Work by Mary Oliver
