    A Day in the Life of Woody showcases the unschooled life of 11-year-old Blackwood, a boy who has been schooled from home all his life. There’s not much missing in a day spent with Woody that you wouldn’t find in the life of most 11-year-old Australian boys - bows & arrows, playing cricket, family time, learning time… but there’s a difference here. From growing the tree to make his future bows & arrows to skillfully handling a chainsaw as he helps his dad manage the local commons forest, Woody’s daily life is both similar and very different to the average young boy’s. Told entirely from Woody’s perspective, this 12-minute film shares an inspiring insight into one young boy’s experience of the world.

    Watching this I realized that it might be the first time I’ve ever seen a documentary that’s purely from a child’s perspective! No adults butting in or commentating on his experience. Just Woody, speaking for himself and being respected at the level of adults.
    Bravo!

    This is what many of us could have experienced if we weren't forced to give 12 years of our life (at minimum)to a broken education system - just to be drained of much of what makes people capable of forging a path into a bright and prosperous future. I wish I could have lived like this... just a bit.

    This is a beautiful portrait of a capable young man. It's also a film that raises the question "What is school for?" Should school continue to be an institution for creating efficient cogs for the machinery of industrialization? Or should it be modelled around planetary healing? If the latter is true, Woody could be a teacher as well as a student. Great job everyone involved!

    • @panthira2240
      @panthira2240 22 часа назад

      My kids, who were always homeschooled, also smiled nearly always. People would comment how they shined.
      Then the government came, handcuffed me, and took my children. They used homeschooling as a reason to take and keep my children. They forced them into public school, isolated them from me for years, indoctrinated them, and broke our bonds. The children, older now, no longer want anything to do with me, hardly leave their house, and no longer smile or shine.
      We live in California.

    lucky kid he is not damaged by boredom and bullies. I was so unhappy K-12 grades, bullied everyday and bored out of my mind, I used to read scifi and literature all through classes. at one point tried to break my leg by repeatedly falling off our garage roof in an attempt not to have to go to school. Mainly I remember being stoned at every lunch and recess and school bus by the other kids, rocks, food and glass were thrown at me constantly, hated the entire experience, now I hate all people and avoid them as much as possible. I did notice that most of these unschooled kids seem to have speech impediments which is interesting

    • @hamerful

    • @alexwilder8315
      @alexwilder8315 14 часов назад +1

      Yeah it's interesting to note the speech differences. I wonder if it's just that kids with slow development are more likely to pulled out of school for their mental health, or if it's actually the late learning of spelling that has an effect on pronunciation... Maybe a bit of both in most of these kids I'm guessing.
      Would scare the shit out of me leaving desire to learn reading and writing up to my kid. But I can appreciate I don't know their full situation. I just think that reading is so important because if you can read, you can learn whatever you want. Therefore shouldn't sound reading skills be the foundation of unschooling? I don't know.

    Inspirational. My wife and I are unschooling our two young boys in a similar manner. It’s absolutely incredible to see what Woody, as well as our own sons, dream up and turn into realities when they are given the time, the freedom, and the autonomy to do so. What a gift.
    Our modern culture is so limiting to kids, both in what we give them the freedom to do as well as our underlying beliefs of what they’re capable of. And in my opinion, it’s the greatest disservice of our generation.
    When you pursue your talents, you find your purpose. But without the time and space to do so-when you’re forced to spend 12 years in compulsive schooling followed by an immediate jump into the rat race-it’s difficult to have that time or space.
    To the parents of Woody: you are inspiring. I sincerely wish our paths cross one day.

    Children guiding their own education sounds like it could be extremely beneficial! Not necessarily for all kids, it seems quite apparent that we all have different learning styles that suit us best. But for the kids who need a lot more guidance, it would be wonderful if it was catered to them as an individual.
    I am very curious about Australian education law though, I assumed homeschooling would need to be done through an official organisation and the syllabus would be set by them. I was quite surprised when Woody said that he decided to start learning to read and right at aged 9. If any Australians here know the rules around homeschooling, I'd be very interested! 🙏

    I am all for the things that this kid is learning in an untraditional environment.. But, I always wonder if these kids will grow up and wish someday they had gone to school.. School is not just grades but about curiosity, exposure, friendships, conversations and growing up together.. There is a lot of beauty in that and it opens opportunities more than anything else.. In this world, education/ school experience is a thing you can't have after growing up while this lifestyle they have, they can always choose later on.. So, I worry for the experiences/ opportunities these kids miss out on!! The deepest hypocrisy is that people cheering this kid on will NEVER teach their own kids this way and will want them to have a school experience but will pretend to be crusaders of change!!

    This video is great but most parents should put their children in school because they are barely able to navigate their own life. Woody is a very rare exception, but most the time home schooled kids just end up with major mental health struggles or end up behind socially next to their peers. This video is hyper-idealistic and sets the wrong expectations. As nice as it is, this is damaging to children of parents who actually think this might be a good idea.

      You are perpetuating stereotypes that are not factual. Yes, children with unhealthy families probably would be better served by an outside setting. No, "most" homeschooled people do not end up socially behind or mentally ill. I don't know how old you are, where you live, or if you have children, but school is not like it used to be. I'd have my kids in school any day if it were like the school I attended, but that ship has sailed!

    I want to possibly homeschool because I think the school system is broken but I do think it’s a little sad to see a 11/12 year old with barely a second or third grade reading level. Reading really needs to start young, at his age he could be writing books if his parents had taught and encouraged him. I’ll always be sad to see kids miss out on higher academic opportunities, even if I also think more children need to know where their food comes from and even how to build a house

      The truth is they'll all naturally "catch up" well before they are ready for higher academic opportunities. The reason it's so "hard" for kids to read is because we teach it earlier and earlier. The race to the top, the "early head start" is damaging to children and society!

      He'll jump to his grade level in one to two years. My 7 yr old was barely sounding out basic CVC words in the Fall. She turned 8 before the spring and she jumped to chapter books and anything she could get her hands on. My older child had a similar experience. They learn faster if not pushed into it. Yeah, you can do it early. I've seen it done well by some parents and the kids really love reading. But it's not the only way. The kids who aren't reading earlier are plenty busy learning other things while their brain develops to grasp more complex ideas. By the time they read, they are ready to understand higher level reading material as well.

      @@goodfriendacres5633 I hadn’t heard that before, thanks for a civil response. Have you seen any videos you’d recommend on the topic? My husband and I were so academically gifted and socially forgotten that early reading was the only thing we really loved about school, I’m willing to believe my narrative may be a little biased as a result
