Very thoughtful content. Just watched four in a row and have learned quite a bit. You might have won me to the cold soak side! Gonna start experimenting. Thx!
I went out in mid February and it took my over an hour for my feet to warm up in my sleeping bag at night ( and I had a good katabatic quilt). Good move on down booties. I like PHD. They are the best. Check out lighthearted gear syl nylon rain jacket. 5 ounces and fully waterproof, pit sips, pockets etc.
I have hiked with folks using the Lighthearted jackets... it seems like worth a try! Thanks. The booties are great, but a great way to get and keep your feet warm is to do 30 jumping jacks before you get in your bag. It helps by starting out warm!
Cannot wait to get my Curve 40. I think I have another 4 weeks of waiting, which is nothing compared to how long I'm waiting on the Durston 2 person dcf tent haha. One thing that I picked up that might be of interest was a cold soak hybrid system, the Vargo Bot. I can build a small cook fire or use a solid fuel system since for occasional use the weight calculus shifts away from butane and alcohol. Great video though. Nice production quality and analysis!
Interesting. The weather conditions here in Scotland vary so much that it pays to have a few options in way of layering clothing and wind/waterproof layers. As you say, you can always buy something else on trail if something of this lot doesn't work out. Best wishes for your AT hike 2022.
All great points. Generally I find the only waterproof/breathables that work after a couple of consecutive rain days are the heaviest ones. I really like the poncho during testing, plus my water resistant windbreaker should be good. Cross fingers!🤞🤞😁
Nice gear video! Interesting to see the changes you are making for this trip. I hope you won't have too many 'gear malfunctions' this time, and I wish you happy trails :D
Nope… I didn’t forget. Because I’m starting out with the same shoes as I did on the GDT… 🤞… Altra Olympus 4… fit great, comfortable and performed well… I suspect/HOPE the AT will be more gentle on the gear, especially my footwear. Just found your channel ... and looking forward to videos from the AT and how the gear works out in the end. Also, thanks for not beeing one of those hyper excited / dramatic youtube hikers ;-)
You come across goofy AF - but that may be a Cultural Difference, you being a Canadian... But damn, I really enjoyed watching your GDT videos! I would warn you against the smaller BeFree bag - getting the water is often the worse part of filtering. You are going to be going back to the well a lot more often with the little bag. In addition if you have a long dry stretch you will miss the extra liter the bigger bag gives you.

Awesome, thank you!

I’m lovin’ my curve. Great points on cold soaking. However I’ve had some issues with my BOT vacuum locking on trail. Since then I leave it at home.
