You're an inspiration to my 8 year old daughter (her name is Kali too lol)! We really appreciate you! It's really great to have an intelligent, brave and positive female role model out there to inspire kids! Keep exploring, keep inspiring! 🌳🌅🌳
I'm doing the PCT this year, it's so nice to see a fellow ultralight women hiker who is near my age. I hope you have the most beautiful journey out there! :)
Better luck this year. We will all be watching. A couple years back I was watching a thru hiker, his gf and Nope at my lunch break. Other people asked and started to watch with me. By the end we had over a dozen watching. So we will all be watching this year. Good luck.
Good video and kit. The emergency blanket looks like a Heatsheet. I hope that it is because they are bigger, stronger and quieter than mylar blankets. Putting the emergency blanket on top of your sleeping pad will give you a little more warmth. If you put the emergency blanket over yourself, it can cause condensation problems after a while. Try it outside as a cape on a cold afternoon. I suggest that you add 2 tealight candles and a book of matches in a small ziplock bag to your gear. If the batteries die the candles can provide light as well as help to light a fire, if the tinder is damp. Consider a thicker wash cloth. You can wrap your batteries with it to protect them from the cold. Have a safe trip. Good Luck, Rick
Best of times.....Stopped by your store to meet you a week ago. I live in Wolfeboro and will be hiking the JMT this summer and the AT in 2023 with my sisters! I'll be following your hike and look forward to your vlogging. Thanks Taylor for sharing! Kris
Learnt a lot.. Thank you..just starting in the hiking world..lol...here we go...didn't realize how expensive this hobby can get...lol. Was pricing out that tent you use...holy goodness...lol...but I hear there awesome...and simple
The Smokies are getting hammered with snow. A few hikers have already left the trail and one family was flipping up to avoid the snow. Please be careful and consider your start time with this weather. Dianne
With the BeFree: get the aftermarket bladders they fit into much better quality. They clog up fast, so I bring coffee filters(or a bandana) to pre filter the water into the water bag. Use a gallon ziploc freezer bag to scoop the water from large down to tiny sources. You can then let any sediment fall to the bottom of the bag then pour the clear water into your container. Green stuff won’t settle to the bottom so that’s what the coffee filters are for.
That is a great base wt. When i did the trail my base wt was 26 pounds ( a long time ago in a Galaxy far far away) LOL!!! A perfect selection of gear. You are of course right to wait until the smokies are behind you before loosing any winter gear, My most useful gear in the Smokies was my swiss army knife saw -- all the wood gets picked out fast each season for wood fires -- everyone laughed at my small saw -- until one night in the smokies my cohort had a cabin with stove (oh was it cold) but the only wood anyone could find was a previously smashed up fibrous wood which would not snap into pieces -- but could be sawed into burnable pieces -- the saw gave us all a warmer night LOL!!!
Know you're from New Hampshire and you'll be starting at Springer. But here in Nebraska the high for the next 4 days is below zero and won't be above freezing for at least 3 weeks. Stay warm and Godspeed.
Hey, found this channel recently and I’ve binge watched most of the episodes already. You have motivated me to get out on the trail more often in 2021. Looking forward to to seeing your updates.
Well thought out gear list. An inflator bag for your sleeping pad can limit the amount of moisture inside. Also, I used a W/P stuff sack for my wet shoes & socks at night. I'd sleep with them in my sleeping bag so they didn't freeze solid on those cold nights. Something to consider. Enjoy your hike. Zman 2013 NoBo.
After binging Frozen from Outdoor Adventure's 2019 thru-hike, I realized that I wanted to follow updates from someone vlogging from the trail this year. One day I hope to thru-hike the AT, too - but I'm still in the planning stage right now. Thanks for your detailed info, and I'm looking forward to your videos going forward!
Nice gear. I would recommend to bring some silica gel packets for the electronics ziploc bags. Phones die from the constant humidity typically rather than dropping it in a river. Also maybe consider waterproof socks such as SealSkins for the Smokies. I would also highly recommend to bring fire starters into the Smokies (vaseline and cotton balls) and doing GSMNP in one go. All the best and thanks for the video!
I have used the sea to summit liner the extreme one. If i were you i would bring the fleece one, if your tent doesnt block the wind properly. I camped out just 1,000 feet above the ground with a 0° sleeping bag kelty synthetic and the liner. The wind was cutting like a knife and it dropped to low 30° that night. I wasnt cold nor warm. Its that in between where you cant even fall asleep and my feet kept being cold. I had the nemo tensor as sleeping pad just in case. I would say try it in your car. Dump the seats and sleep a night in your backseat or trunk if you can and find out if its bearable!
.. suggest swapping the stud grip spikes ( designed for hard smooth surfaces like concrete, asphalt , etc ) ,, for good trail spikes ,, such as Katoola's .. designed for frozen trails , hardpacked snow and ice ...
Proud of you Taylor. Thanks for taking a set of spikes and Garmin with you. Now, if you can convince Kyle to carry one both of my “East-coasters” will have emergency beacons. Stay safe out there. Have a GREAT hike!
Awesome setup for a winter start! I had a lot of the same gear when I did the Colorado Trail last year and it worked amazingly when we got hit with snow! You're going to do great ☺️
A few Ideas Sun Glasses, Prescription Glasses, fuzzy hat and some Duct tape. Glasses are good fore use when your eyes might get infected. Fuzzy hat can also be used at night to keep warm. AT :)
Great video. Two suggestions to lower your base weight. The sleeping bag liner doesn’t work as advertised. I’ve used mine off and on for 4 years and only now pack it in warm weather in lieu of a quilt. You’ll save 12 oz. I used to have a Jetboil Flash too. Loved it but it’s heavy and not very packable. You’ll save almost a pound.
Hey gal!! I have some ideas for you to help you get your base weight lower, take it or leave it! Lose the sea to summit liner. It doesn't work- I know, I TRIED IT!! Use your puffy as a pillow, and ditch the other tiny pillow. Get gloves, and then bring surgical gloves to layer on top of them when it is raining for "rainproofing." This system is much lighter, and you can use your fingers to grab things such as your snacks or headlamp instead of the mittens that you will have to take off. Use your bandana as a way to keep your hair out of your face, OR I would recommend a full on cap instead of your visor, because your hair is gonna get greasy, girl! Covering the grease til you wash it will be nice! Also, ditch those camp shoes and use instead some very thin water shoes instead (find them on amazon) for crossing the rivers! They can double as camp shoes to slip on. Also ditch the stuff sacks and use instead some ziploc bags, they are much lighter, waterproof and cheap! You also don't need a three liter bag to fill your two 1 liter bottles, instead get a 1 liter katadyn bag and fill your water bottles that way to save ounces. You don't need a pot cleaner blue towel, you only need your bandana- so many uses for that bandana!! Get rid of your hand sanitizer and that concentrated soap. Instead bring a small soap bar, and use your knife to whittle off a small sliver of soap, and with a little water you can lather up after doing your business, or to wash your stuff. Girl, you don't need those wet wipes, you're going to stink. Embrace it, and let go of the excess weight. Wrap leuko tape around your trekking pole so you don't have to carry it. I hope some of this helps, your knees will thank you!!
Disagree on the puffy as pillow. The Fillo, which she has, is only 3 ounces. Many former puffy as pillow people now swear by the luxury of a blow up pillow. Helps you get good sleep to refresh much better to put in more miles. 3 ounces is worth it imo. "Girl, you don't need those wet wipes, you're going to stink." True, but some of us enjoy the luxury of feeling clean in our private areas and joints. Wet wipes as a luxury item isn't putting on excessive weight. Your suggestions are more of preference of luxury items. Some of us are able to put on more miles because of comfort from our luxury items, such as soap or deodorant.
The liner adds 25 degrees when the temperature is 80. It adds hardly anything below 40. It weighs like a half pound. The sandals will be less convenient. Getting the crocs on and off is effortless. The EVA BIRKENSTOCK sandal is a slide and weigh 3.5 ounces each. They are super easy and really comfortable.
Looks like one shoe has Lock Laces. I use the same. Makes it easy to slip on and off my Lone Peaks when I want to air out my feet or change socks. The Walmart version works too. I'm not starting till early April, but hope to cross paths somewhere. Happy trails!
Really getting excited for you Taylor, you’re gonna crush it! Your gear is solid and well thought out. I’ll refer to it often as I plan my own 2022 AT through hike. Did you consider an umbrella? For your first aid kit, consider a few oversized sterile dressings like mepore, a small tube of antibiotic ointment, and a three day supply of oral ciprofloxin or doxycycline...good for wound infections, UTI, diarrhea, sinusitis, bronchitis and if bitten by a deer tick- Lyme prevention. A visit with your primary care provider to update your immunization status is also a good idea. Anyway, best of luck and drive safe!!!
I wish you the best!! I kinda felt bad for you, your trip was cut short due to the pandemic. But you made the right decision at the time to get off trail! Its great to see you hung in there and are going right back out to complete it!! You also got in some miles the first go around. Your gonna fall right back into the hiking groove quickly i bet! Your gear also seems a bit more dialed in aswell. The convert was a good choice! I have one too lol. Stay safe out there! Hike on!
May I recommend Benadryl. It’s great for allergic reactions to anything. I cut my Qtips in half so they last longer. I usually use one side to clean my ears. They also work great with super glue to seal cuts
Good luck Taylor! It is so ding darn cold up North right now, I can't imagine starting so early. I hope Georga is warm enough. Good luck. I am excited to see your videos from the trial.
Oh man I got some down booties too, from Goosefeet Gear, and my god I love those things!! Super excited for your hike. Stay warm, stay safe. We're all rooting for you!
We have pretty close to the same gear set up. In 2019, I really didnt notice any difference with the bag liner. We froze no matter what, I also wasnt fond of the rei rain mitts. Need to have a good liner for them. The Possum down gloves i had were not enough. SInce you are going with the BeFree Filter. I recommend upgrading to the Bag by Cnoc. I had 3 of the BeFree Bags rip or get holes in them. Id also upgrade your wall charge to a faster, small, and lighter version of the anker charger ( Anker 30W PIQ 3.0 & GaN Wall Charger, $23 on amazon). Other then that you got you gear pretty well sorted out.
I'm interested to see what you think of everything, particularly the ultra-small headlamp and the water filter system. Just think, you are now only at 16 pounds (which I consider pretty light) and you will be getting even lighter with spring and summer gear. You are ready to go!
Love this. Best of luck with winter camping. It has been a brutal time for the guys out there now. Looking forward to following your adventure. I'll be a month or two behind.
Can't wait to watch your on trail videos! Somewhere over the rainbow (clicking my heels!), I'd like to attempt the Appalachain trail thru-hike. Until then I'll be admiring your courage and wishing you the best on your hike. Thanks Taylor
Good luck! What about antibiotics and triple action polysporin cream, mosquitio spray, toothbrush? Why the clothing redundancies (flease and down, rainpants and hiking pants and tights, undershirt and thumbhole shirt and tshirt, headband and hairties, 5 socks, 5 bandana cloths instead of 1 pee cloth and 1/2 a scrubbie). Just some suggestions, take or leave it. I'm sure yiu'll do great. Can't wait to see more.
Very nice. I see that Jet Boil came out with a new smaller, lighter weight system. If I didn't already have my system, I might have considered that one. Ugh, my base weight is around 22 pounds because I'm taking a bit more than you but I'm sure I'll lighten that up down the trail. I can still leave an ounce here and there at home. I'm also using the Xero camp shoes. I like to wear them in the shower at strange places. Good luck on your hike. I'll be behind you by a long ways. John from MI
Hi T, awesome loadout... just remember the hand warmers can melt sleeping bag material with direct contact. Just be careful, I use them in socks. :) I love the push clothes part!!!! ROFL!!!! Good luck, I'll be following!!! :)
Great video. Just a suggestion if I may - I'm not personally familiar but many people (thru hikers, REI staff, bloggers) have said the BeFree water bags are fragile and recommend a Hydrapak as replacement (when/if needed.) I happen to use Hydrapak bottles and have never had an issue.
Good call on those crampons , think I will get those instead of using my real sharp metal ones . Like you said hopefully after the smokies it will be all clear .
Yup, those were super minimal spikes. But they will certainly be better than nothing in the Smokey's. I have a feeling they'll still be snow when I get to them
You might want to take a look at the new model Kahtoola EXOspikes. They are similar to what you showed in your video but are somewhat studier than the type you have. I own both and would prefer the Kahtoola's for long days of hiking with a decent amount of weight on my back. Based on the current weather pattern down this way its looking like they'll get some use this year. Good luck and cograts on your engagement.
I'm so excited for you that you're starting so soon! You must be thrilled! I would really love to see a video of how you pack everything but you might not be able to get to that before you leave. Awesome video as always. Happy Trails!
Thanks! I'm wicked excited! I'm still figuring out how exactly I want to pack everything in the pack. I might show that in a video while I'm on trail once I figure it out.
@@TaylortheNahamshaHiker lol! I'm only asking because I can't figure out how to pack all my stuff and I was kind of hoping you might have figured something out. 😂
taylor namaha namaha. looks good. u might want to rethink the sneeks for three quarter semi insulate boot and 2 more socks for the smokies. record snow with 3 foot drifts. people talking of freezing feet. better yet id say dont leave in feb. wait give it a chance to melt. most are forced to go around to standing bear rt 40. its 14 inch of snow and still coming. the suttons had to turn around, will on the trail gone,... if u are a purist give it some thought. fire to dry socks. your gear is top notch. u might consider liner socks inside the wool. your feet will be wet most of the time. or bring plenty of leuka tape. if u plan on heavy miles. id wait till 2nd week of april and not worry about extreme cold and who knows how long the snow will be there. id venture to guess, may. good luck have fun.
Gear looks solid Taylor! Remember to keep that Katadyn filter from freezing at night (and day maybe). What about sunglasses? Really interested to see how your Zpacks Arc Air Backpack works out. Have a great time, looking forward to updates!
A lot of thought and experience has gone into your choices -- looks perfect for your early start! I ordered the spikes you suggested using your link. They look lighter than my Hillsounds, even though their website does not give the weight. Interesting to see how they do in the Whites. Wishing you good health and godspeed on your journey!
You're an inspiration to my 8 year old daughter (her name is Kali too lol)! We really appreciate you! It's really great to have an intelligent, brave and positive female role model out there to inspire kids! Keep exploring, keep inspiring! 🌳🌅🌳
16 lbs, is a very realistic winter set up for the AT. I saw you finished successful, this past year and congratulations.
I'm doing the PCT this year, it's so nice to see a fellow ultralight women hiker who is near my age. I hope you have the most beautiful journey out there! :)
PCT is awesome I live not far from it in California and hike carson pass alot.
16 Pounds is pretty great for a winter base weight. Excited for your adventure, be safe and have fun.
16 base weight is really good for cold weather with all the extra weight of clothing etc! Good job!
5:13 I got the fright of my life for some reason, but it's just a good doggo! Great video and best wishes for your thru hike!!

Very well organized and presented Taylor. This could be a tutorial on how to prepare a gear video. I wish you the best on your journey.
When I did the Roan Highlands section, I had a rock bag for my food bag. One camp, halfway up Roan Mountain, I couldn't find a single rock.

Love your Hokusai poster. I went to the Hokusai museum in Japan and saw some of the originals.
Good list, im glad you actually took an spaceblanket too.
Well thought out gear list. An inflator bag for your sleeping pad can limit the amount of moisture inside. Also, I used a W/P stuff sack for my wet shoes & socks at night. Can't wait to watch your on trail videos! Somewhere over the rainbow (clicking my heels!), I'd like to attempt the Appalachain trail thru-hike. Until then I'll be admiring your courage and wishing you the best on your hike. Thanks Taylor
Awesome! Good luck on your hike Taylor!
Interesting pillow! Great overview of your load out.
I’m really excited to get to watch your videos as you hike! I can’t wait!! Thank you 🙏🏻
You will be awesome!!! Can’t wait to follow your AT journey!!🥾❄️❤️
that pack looks awesome! nice video showing all the stuff! thanks
Love the gear videos! You are so thorough! Can’t wait to catch your vlogs!
Hi T, awesome loadout...
just remember the hand warmers can melt sleeping bag material with direct contact. Just be careful, I use them in socks. :)
I love the push clothes part!!!! ROFL!!!!
Good luck, I'll be following!!! :)
Great kit Nahamsha! Well done! Safe travels getting down to GA👍🏻!
You might want to consider insect control, spray, head net etc.
Nice gear vid Nahamsha! The pillow looks like something I may check out.
It's a good one!!
Great informative video, looking forward to following your vlogs of your thru hike !! Good luck, be safe, and have fun !!!
Can't wait to follow your journey! I hoping to hike the AT in a few years. Until then I will live vicariously through vids 😁 Looks like a good loadout
Have the time of your life!
Awesome! I’m looking forward to following your journey! My start will be early 2022 so, I appreciate seeing your early season gear!! Happy hiking!!!
Thanks! Hope you got some good tips!
Have an amazing trip, stay warm!!
taylor namaha namaha. looks good. u might want to rethink the sneeks for three quarter semi insulate boot and 2 more socks for the smokies. record snow with 3 foot drifts. people talking of freezing feet. better yet id say dont leave in feb. wait give it a chance to melt. most are forced to go around to standing bear rt 40. its 14 inch of snow and still coming. the suttons had to turn around, will on the trail gone,... if u are a purist give it some thought. fire to dry socks. your gear is top notch. u might consider liner socks inside the wool. your feet will be wet most of the time. or bring plenty of leuka tape. if u plan on heavy miles. id wait till 2nd week of april and not worry about extreme cold and who knows how long the snow will be there. id venture to guess, may. good luck have fun.
Gear looks solid Taylor! Remember to keep that Katadyn filter from freezing at night (and day maybe). What about sunglasses? Really interested to see how your Zpacks Arc Air Backpack works out. Have a great time, looking forward to updates!
Looking forward to following your adventure! Good luck sage travels.
Thank you!
Looks like a great load out and great weight! Thanks for sharing!
Can’t wait to follow you on the AT
A lot of thought and experience has gone into your choices -- looks perfect for your early start!
I ordered the spikes you suggested using your link. They look lighter than my Hillsounds, even though their website does not give the weight. Interesting to see how they do in the Whites.
Wishing you good health and godspeed on your journey!
Ready to go:) Go do it. WE will support you from our end and follow. Very excited for you. Let's GO
Good luck on the AT, congrats on the WMUR segment, that was cool😎 Stay safe, stay well 👍✌️
Thank you!!
