  • My client designed this modern looking metal and wood mahogany gate. I know I have been making a lot of gates but they are all different and present their own challenges. The client was really happy and the gate turned out great.

That turned out great. Word of warning for viewers in colder climates. I used those button head style screws to attach an oak wine barrel top to a metal frame and several of them sheared after two winters. I ended up replacing them with stainless and they’ve been fine.

A lot of prep for what looks like a basic gate. The amount of planning and work that goes into them is really mind blowing. Jimbo always does nice work! A true craftsman.

Hey Jimbo amazing video as normal. I did a similar set of gates for my property. I used 2" angle to get the wood to inset and used 2x2 material along the frame to screw the boards to . It's great seeing other ways.

Where did you purchase the wood? Did you buy it surfaced (3/4" thick), or did you buy it rough and mill it yourself to finished dimension?

I have no experience in building gates, or metal fabrication. I visually liked the gate in its final location. The wood choice suited the location good as well. Great job. Visually to me I would like to see the wood shade just a shade darker, and the retaining screws color matched to gate color. Maybe you agree.

I bought the same drill press after you reviewed yours....I found the work surface was high compared to my old unit...in fact I had metal shavings being thrown into my face so I had two choices...lower the table top or shorten the drill press upright post. Have you thought about cutting 4" off the tube to sort out the problem? I lowered my table to achieve a better drilling posn.

Jimbo i never see you drill weep holes? Its a good way to allow condensation water a place to drain especially in climates where you get freezing temperatures you don't get puffing in your post or oil stain on your picket Welds during powder coating. Its a must on my jobs it sucks but its peace of mind. I Enjoy your videos

Hey hey hey, nice saw! I was going to build my own metal cutting chop saw but I'm paused on your video where you're using the newer version of the Evolution saw. Several reviews/comments later I figured I better come back to where I first saw it being used and say thanks. Maybe Evolution will send you thanks or a new blade? I dunno. Haha. Ok, now I'll finish your video. I see you have a video about a metal/wood bed frame. Will be searching for a murphy bed build and this saw would be da bomb. Thanks again. Cheers. Oh I found your page following the various HTP welders. Not sure if I need the 300 but thinking 220. So much to consider but one thing I see on other pages for different welder machines is the ability to have easy access to consumables. I see you have a whole pile of HTP machines so I guess you're not having problems keeping them running. Between your reviews, This Old Tony and others, I'm really thinking about buying HTP vs the other big brands. Anyway, thanks!!!

Do you worry about the areas of raw metal that are not going to get powdercoat or paint that will rust later and possibly show up after a first rain? I've been building gates as a side gig for a couple years and i feel like i allow this idea in my head that any raw metal that is covered by another piece of metal and not completely sealed with weld etc will later have rust run down etc... i feel like it impeades my design because i worry so much about every surface not being protected from water. Please advise... I.E. your drop pins and where you have to use flat bar to step up the surface ?
