  • #JimbosGarage #Welding #MetalFabrication I built this cantilever gate for a client who did not want a track running along the ground. The hardware for this gate was a little hard to track down and expensive to ship because of the size. The end product turned out great.

    I did one of these. I have many vids on it. Opening over 12 feet about 20 ft long total for the over hang. I used the track as the base. Opens with auto opener and rack package. Working good over three years. Going to build another one for my other opening for my driveway. Nice job on the gate. Weld tables are slick.

      I agree. It helps brace the frame but I usually tack temporary braces from bot/top to above/below cut out before cutting because it Always moves towards the inside due to the fillet welds.

  • @africanhistory
    @africanhistory 3 года назад +1

    Jimbo, if you do not want it to spring you can put in a temp short bar top and bottom of where it is going before you cut it, Then it will never spring anywhere. When finished cut them off.

      I‘m pretty sure it’s standard US building code for railings and fencing/gates not just Cali law. It’s to keep baby’s from getting stuck or falling through. I’ve heard of inspectors carrying a softball to check spacing, if the softball fits through it’s too big of a gap/spacing.

    • @donsmith9081

      @@michael-michaelmotorcycle I believe code for rolling gates must be solid sheeted-no openings to get hand or arm caught in.

    Just found your channel and really like your work and explanations of how and why you do what you do. Just and fyi, the fence on your evolution saw moves forward to allow for a full through cut at a 45 degree angle. That said, a piece of stock between the fence and the stock to be cut....works as well;-)

  • @ForensicCats
    @ForensicCats 3 года назад

    Typically, you do NOT add the extra balusters all the way to the end; it get's a tension bar design installed... this is so you do not waster material and also block the view of the side wall when gate is closed... The gate closed now, has extra 5 foot of balusters (you call pickets) on the face of the wall area)... Detracting from that beautiful stone wall.

    On the section of the gate that never clears the wall, could you have just welded in a solid sheet, say 11ga, instead of pickets? Or maybe just an x brace arrangement? BTW, I am a subscriber and I rang the bell, and I didn't get notified of your last two videos. Do you maintain a mailing list yourself?

    No need to go on a double with the whole frame. Do the frame just over the size of the opening to cover the hardware or the post. Other part can be just the bottom part of the frame with a triangle / diagonal piece to connect to the top of the frame for structural rigidity, and sliding rail at the bottom part in the whole length off course. That other part is about 1/4 to 1/3 of the length of the opening. That's it. In other way, nice and quick gate.

    • @btimbyindy
      @btimbyindy 3 года назад

      That's a slick way. Just extend the bottom rail, no need for so many pickets or decrorative accents.

    May i please ask ? Why do you keep so many welders, grinders and other tools ? I’ve been welding most of my life “I’m 49” my father is a master welder/fabricator. I have one welder, one grinder 2 hand drills and I can make everything you make at the same pace. I can agree that having extra tools is a good thing to do. But 47 welder and 19 grinders. I’m exaggerating of course.

    • @michael-michaelmotorcycle
      @michael-michaelmotorcycle 3 года назад

      Good point/idea. Could of saved a bit of material. However the aesthetics might have looked off doing it that way.

    • @grumpyone5963
      @grumpyone5963 3 года назад

      You want the track to be as rigid as possible for this type of gate to support the overhanging weight without flexing. Granted this is only a small gate so I’m sure it’s possible in this case. But there is a risk. If you burn through the track with one of your welds it binds up in the carriage wheels. And is really tricky to grind out. I’ve done maybe 10-15 of these up to a 9 metre (29 feet) clear opening. Good job for this application. 🇬🇧

  • @greendunn1
    @greendunn1 Год назад

    Shouldnt you made the bottom track the actual bottom of your gate? That way, when you have the gate powder coated, you dont have the top of the bottom track and the bottom of the gate frame bare metal.

  • @tlangham71

    Hey Jimbo, thanks for another excellent build! I couldn’t help but notice that there was virtually ZERO spatter on your weld table, even when you were getting close welding the frame corners. I spend almost as much time cleaning up spatter on my weld table as I do cleaning up my ugly welds. How do you do it? I’m running a Vulcan 220, .030 wire, 75/25 gas, and typically use the default preconfigured settings and always make a hell of a mess. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

I’ve heard of inspectors carrying a softball to check spacing, if the softball fits through it’s too big of a gap/spacing. What if there was a pool behind that gate and a toddler got through to the pool, or it was a set of bars on a second story window? That’s the reasoning behind the building code.
