Hi Dari, Amazon will usually replace if the porch pirates take your package. For more expensive items, you can send the items to secure Amazon pick up station. Another option is that your landlord can enter into an agreement with Amazon that allows them to electrically buzz in to place packages in the mailroom where they are safer. I own several buildings in Chicago and I use this option because so many tenant deliveries were being stolen.

I know it's probably still a bit crazy for you right now, but be prepared for the culture shock (and homesickness). You'll probably start feeling it a bit after about 2-3 months once you're settled in. But hang in there, it'll get better eventually. Luckily, you're at a school that has other students not from the USA, you can build a nice little support group to get you (and others) through those tough times. Cheers.

During the pandemic the number of packages delivered to apartments increased dramatically. Apartments became overwhelmed by the large number of packages and they had to tell delivery services to just drop packages at doors. Most people (like me) never had any packages stolen, so we just continued with door deliveries. If you do have packages stolen you can buy a post office box where packages can be left.

I had a Russian friend who attended graduate school in America. In Russia, she worked as an English translator, but she found it difficult to understand all of the school material in English. So, I was wondering if you have any problems understanding the course work and lectures because it is all in English.

Just let the professor know and he or she will cut you some slack. Also, very important to go to office hours with professors because they like the feedback and when you are making a huge transition like this and there are some language issues, they need to know that usually will be very understanding.@@DariStep

So much to say. So let me start off by saying that it's great to see your explorations around New York. Can't wait for you to share more of your impressions, especially aspects of American life that are very different from Russia...or other parts of the world you've visited.
Labor Day is unofficially considered the last day of summer and the beginning of fall. There are different climate zones across the country so it might not necessarily feel that way depending on where you are. At any rate, it's often the last time to take a short vacation before school starts. It's also one of the summer holidays in which people celebrate with a barbecue. Would love it if you could visit a barbeque restaurant in NYC with some of your friends.
Regarding your choice of universities...you made a GREAT choice. You mentioned several factors relating to the cost of the program (which St John's was fully covering)...fantastic! But I'm unsure whether you mentioned the quality of the university. Once you graduate, you'll absolutely want a degree from a university that people know and respect....and people know and respect the business school at St. John's.
Regarding the sexual harassment program....I think it's a perfectly fine thing. I doubt you have time to do a tally, but it'd be interesting to compare responses between guys/gals.
Regarding ordering from Amazon...I help procure tech products for a Fortune 500 company. And I order multiple products for different customers from Amazon every single day. FYI, getting reimbursed by Amazon for lost/missing items is a big hassle. So it's better to ship them to a nearby secure location where they can be picked up. When shipping to apartments I will send items to an Amazon Fresh grocery store OR an Amazon Locker, which allow my customers to retrieve them when they're ready.
BTW, I received my undergraduate degree from UCLA which is in Los Angeles, CA (GO BRUINS!!!). It's one of the largest schools in the nation....had a lecture hall class with over 600 students! Also earned my masters degree from Pepperdine in Malibu, CA.

When it comes to Amazon, it's a little different depending on locations. They used to leave the box right at my door and ring the doorbell, but they installed a Hub (similar to a post office), leave them there and send me a code to get my orders. It's odd that they have no secure place anywhere 🤔.
And yes, I went to a university that was in a smaller city, where the events in town really focused on the campus, so it felt like the town and university were one big community. I go back often, and while it's changed a bit, it was so rewarding to spend my college years there.

In the past, you could only go to Moscow, or in the GDR to study abroad from Budapest. Back then it was Bolshevism, today's world is more open. I studied here in Budapest, and the standard was high at our university. In my opinion, studying at home is more beneficial, but it is easier to acquire language skills abroad.

Labor Day is essentially America’s May Day. May Day’s origins are from the Haymarket Riot in Chicago in 1884 when labor unions were pressing nationwide for an 8-hour work week.
In order to celebrate the labor movement, but avoid the celebration of May Day and the Haymarket incident, the federal government moved the holiday to September. Labor Day is typically considered the official end of summer. It’s actually tradition that some summer clothing (like seersucker) should not be worn after Labor Day.

University of Nebraska Lincoln, nice friendly, and very inexpensive university city. 400,000 population so not overwhelmingly big for those that don't want a huge city. But big enough to have some of the same attractions. Campus is next to town center, lots of apartments around the campus and downtown focused on student housing. And there are a lot of different international dining options in the town, and quite a few shopping centers. Good hosptials.
Again a nice clean safe city in a state and city with a very low cost of living, so great for students on a budget. And they have a decent sized international student body.

Keep those grades up! Anyway, your lucky your Amazon packages were not stolen. I can't remember, but I thought Amazon has pickup locations, were you go there and retrieve your stuff (Not sure if there is extra cost, but safer than it laying on the floor in the hall of a large apartment building). And since they take a picture of it delivered, I believe you would get stuck with paying for something that is not there.
Also: There is a show on TV here called Man versus Food, where he takes on food challenges. Saw an episode where the host was in New York City and stopped by Patsy's Pizza (Oldest pizza place in NY). It reminded me of your first slice and thought, maybe you should drop in and get a slice! Hoping that someday, I'll get there and do the same (plus a ton more)!

These parties generally involve grilling burgers, drinking beer, and whatever other fun activities you do in your back yard. It has very little to do with the namesake of the day; that’s been long forgotten.

The Amazon thing may be different in NY. They generally deliver to your door. There was a FEDEX person that did that to me... I complained because it was a $20,000 delivery and they never did it again. I suspect it happens when the driver is running behind. Amazon will generally just overnight a replacement at no charge. They take your word for it. Also, that course... explicitly lays out so there isn't any question about what is expected. If you violate it you'll probably be expelled. It just removes a whole bunch of subjective excuses.

The people who steal your Amazon in the USA are called porch pirates. They also have lockers and other places where you can have your Amazon delivered to. But I'm sure somebody has already told you that. I didn't notice that about the door locks. I spend plenty of time trying to figure out how to unlock things and turn the water to hot or cold. Left and right are not my best friends. Also my roommate fixed my bathroom sink and when he put it back together apparently the hot is on the cold side and the cold is on the hot sides so I'm probably never going to intuitively learn which way to turn the faucet to get hot or cold water. It tends to vary throughout the house. I'm not sure about the kitchen. I usually just stand there and ask whoever is nearby Which way is cold as I am burning my hands off.... We need to replace the whole sink faucet assembly but so far it's been 5 years and nothing's happened yet. But at least this afternoon the guy's managed to get the new 5-year-old refrigerator into the kitchen which is something they couldn't manage last night and the manual was no help and neither was the help line and by the time I thought of RUclips, they were both sick and tired of the whole thing. So hopefully most of our food managed to survive the night and half the afternoon in the coolers we put it in way too early yesterday afternoon. Yahoo! We have a refrigerator that actually goes down to 37°!

6:41 I lived in Tempe, AZ for some time which is a city built around ASU (Arizona State University). It's an interesting city because it's in the desert but on a big manmade lake. ASU has a reputation for being a party school and I'd say that definitely holds true and can even be seen throughout Tempe (Lots of bars, clubs, trendy restaurants, etc.).
Not really my scene but definitely an interesting town nonetheless

It used to be, and it may still be, But it was novel at the time, In Harvard Square, due to Harvard and MIT, there were a lot of unique bookstores. Back in the 1980s I don't think it was really easy to walk into a bookstore and buy a book on learning Polish. I actually bought four of them. But in Harvard Square you could do that. I have literally had a guy ask me on a date "Hey, do you want to go to Harvard Square, and go to some bookstores?" (As it turned out it was also New Year's Eve and super cold and we got to see some fireworks and some ice sculptures and freeze our little butts off and wait in line a very long time to have pizza at what used to be called pizzeria Uno's, but overall it was fun.)

I live “upstate” NY (small towns surrounded by rural areas) where you can trust packages will not be stolen most of the time. But as the holidays come I’ve even had packages stolen then. Amazon sent more and still got stolen. It’s not a great system. I have seen how in Russian villages everyone has tall fences around their house. I suppose they can’t rely on police officers to deter crime. It appears we have a greater police presence in the US. But more importantly is that neighbors in small towns watch out for one another and take action.

About teaching sexual harassment in high schools this somewhat controversial in America, well its more just sexual education i.e. Learning about sexual organs, puberty, safe sex, STDs, birth control, and consent that’s controversial.
In the debate you have people (like me) who support initiatives for Sex Ed and conservative and/or religious people (mainly and) who say Schools should only teach abstinence. Those against it say school should just tell hormone fill teens to not have sex and that it should be up to the parents to decide if they want to discuss it further, the common counter argument is that they’re hormone filled teens who are naturally curious, you can’t fully stop every teen from engaging in sex so it’s better to at least teach all of them to be safe and responsible, also it’s hard for parents to have this talk so it’s better to do it with a professional.
Ultimately in the US public education is up to each individual state, some have zero Sex Ed, some have Sex Ed but if the parent doesn’t consent to it they can have their child skip it (I think that’s how it is in New York) others have mandatory Sex Ed
I live in California, where Sex Education is a requirement to graduating high school, personally the only thing I find wrong with this is that it makes Biology class a requirement (I hate biology)
In my Sex Ed we had a section to talk about consent which included watching this video
    ruclips.net/video/oQbei5JGiT8/видео.htmlfeature=shared
Beyond a short Q and A we didn’t go further on the topic on consent and sexual harassment. There’s a video by people who say it should give a more detailed discussion.

At your age, you are still young, you might as well take the time do the education stuff because you might not feel like doing that when you get older and have an extremely closed mind like me. Yeah you can buy those door security bars at Home Depot that you slip underneath the door knob(s) from the inside of the apartment which are good. As far as drugs and dating, some people are physically activated and other people are only mind activated (but not their body). Right they can slip drugs into girls drinks at parties which is sadness but there is a lot of that everywhere except for the real adult women who are role models for younger women....???.
