Not trying to be cheeky here but, I have a 6ftx4ft painting of Beethoven on canvas that the artist completed in 5mins
Time is not the issue -abstract art is a great place to start give yourself a time limit and fling some paint!! 🙂

This is the most relatable video I've seen lately thank you for bringing this up. I've gone through the same it's crazy 😮 lately I started thinking I should just focus on documenting what I already do without buying new things so I can learn to outgrow what I already own, so that upgrading makes sense. But I do think that the enjoyment part of the process is what makes this worthwhile eventhough it doesn't make sense financially. We need a passion project to keep motivation for everything else. I’m so thankful you made this video because no one talks about this! I spent so, so much money on fountain pens and planner supplies ever since joining the stationery community. Thankfully, I bought them for me and not for trying to make videos, but luckily I can make videos with what I have. But even then, I spent on equipment for filming like you. Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about how small RUclipsrs start and if anyone else feels like me during the “I’m not monetized yet” stage. It really does feel like “how much I paid RUclips” instead of how much they pay me 😂😅. Thank you for making this video! It showed up randomly on my page. Hopefully it goes viral for you ☺️❤️

Haha! Yes! Until I made this video, it seemed like I was the only one is this situation. Based on the comments, there're a lot of us sharing the same experience! 😅 The stage of working hard and slowly getting closer to being monetized seems to be so loooong, it's almost a never ending phase. This is when other, more important reasons, why we do it, come handy. So, don't give up, let's enjoy the journey, the destination will take care of itself someday 😊❤️

Ahhh this is a great video!!! (And not even because you mentioned me!) 🤣 I totally feel all of this. You are right, if anyone is thinking about doing youtube, they really do not need to spend a lot of money to be successful. But--sometimes it happens anyway!! 😁 I've bought a lot of equipment I didn't need, mostly before I even started my art channel because I had several other things I thought I wanted to try (but that never really took off for various reasons)...but I count it as living and learning. Plus, I tell myself that books and tools for creativity are never bad investments!! 😉💗

    • @Katiors
      @Katiors  8 месяцев назад +4

True! 😅 At the beginning I wanted to buy so much more, various digital cameras, studio lighting, everything I would see in other people's videos 😀 I could easily have ended up buying so much more than I have actually bought 😂 But I agree, you either succeed or learn and this is an investment. If you doubt, there's always a room for selling the item (for a lower price, but still 🙄). Thanks for sharing your thoughts about this matter 😊❤️

Hullo Katie, I am a semi-retired Artist. I have made educational type videos in the past. I have even recorded classes that I have taught at the local senior center. I have not created a RUclips channel as I know how hard video editing can be. I hope this very informative video gets you to or maybe even over those 4000 hours of watched video times! I have never seen this topic spoken about before in a video. I hope you get there. I believe that enjoying the creation of the channel and your videos is so important and if anyone is looking for that cash making machine, it is not in the “art” field! I think you could use those classes you bought for video content as a “I followed this Skillshare class what do you think?” This way you get more from the money already spent as well as content for your channel. You don’t have to name the artist nor specific class just as a drawing class from Skillshare! Use whatever kind of class you have already paid for! This might even motivate you to finish the class and learn more about your job or a technique you want to be better with? Thank you for sharing this video. I am sure those people who see it will be enlightened and be more informed about starting a RUclips channel. Starting a channel for me was an afterthought following getting back into art and investing in the supplies.… It just made sense to try to do a little more with it since I had it already. I make sure I use nothing except my phone and the lighting I already possess, I have only bought one LED soft light and I needed that anyway. That would be my advice if anyone would start a channel. it as part of what you’re already doing. Don’t try to do it so fast, and bring everyone along on the journey you’re already on.

I really thank you for your honesty, since it's not very common here.
I totally understand you about the online courses (I bought some Domestika ones and started only 2 of them, sigh!); and about the 300$ one, I think it's more or less the average price for an art course (yes they're quite expensive :( ).
I get your embarrassment in saying how much you've spent for them, but it's your money! Nobody should judge your for how you spend it 😉
Sometimes we are caught in a "I-need-more-of-them" circle: it might be that we are down and buying new stuff lifts us a bit, or we start a new hobby and get so excited that end up buying more than necessary. It's normal. As you've said, the important thing is to realise it, at some point, and use the material we have to improve our art/hobby - and have a nice time too!

I'm also on a no/low spend this year, which includes my art supplies, in order to cut back on spending and being more intentional with what I buy. It's so hard to hold back, but I don't really regret my purchases. I started giving away my lightly used supplies to friends who are interested in inheriting them and plan to donate future unused to a local art non-profit. I figured that rather than letting art supplies collect dust, I can let them find a new home!

I love this video! I have no plans to make RUclips videos, but I like many creative people can’t seem to walk away from new supplies. I put the brakes on hard last year. I now call them my (“401K Art fund). I am getting close to retirement and will be living off grid,40 miles from any roads. They will be brought to my cabin in the woods and I will finally have time. I only have time to dabble here and there. All of this is great advice! I live in an older home,my children are gone and I have stashed supplies here and there have had no dedicated space to do art. Seeing your supplies layer out was eye opening! I am almost afraid to look at mine in one spot. I will have to to get them out to my cabin via snowmachine!😂 keep going! Okay, I too have an unmonetized youtube channel geared towards art and this was such a comforting video to watch. I also have spent lots and lots of money on art courses I have yet to take and supplies and gear I’m not using. Of course, there are also many art supplies and tech gear I do use. I’ve tried a bunch of stuff and they were the ones that worked better for me but I can still feel guilty about the money I spent on items I’m not using. I really appreciate that you took the time to add up all your expenses and share them with us. It’s helpful to see it’s not just me. ❤️ I try and remind myself that all business need investment but I’ve been working on my channel since 2020 and although I estimated (based on my research) I would probably reach monetization around 2024-2025, that’s a long time to work for free, not knowing if it will work out. Luckily I’m a mom so I’m used to working for free. 🤣 I also love video editing, making art so that helps me be patient as well. I’m glad to be doing it paid or not. in my case with my channel. i find it hard to just actually record my art. since i tend to make my best work while i'm sitting behind my laptop so i have every resource on hand. which makes getting to the Recording spot quite hard. because that's not where my stuff is usually. or i am just working on a thing not even thinking about recording it since i am already part way through it all.
also Editing. not my strong suit.
and when i check the analytics i always see people just watching the first minute then jumping straight to end. which just makes it feel like people don't give a damn about the process it took me to get to the cool end result. i tried condensing stuff more. yet people still skip around. watching less than a minute of a 10 minute video. like THE HECK IS THE POINT OF WATCHING ME MAKE STUFF.

What I would suggest regarding your videos is maybe change the form of titles your next videos and see if that works? For example, "How I paint a character from (x) with watercolor", "My full drawing/painting process of (x)". You can also give your videos a form of tutorial: "Beginner ink drawing tutorial" or "Intermediate painting tutorial of (x)" etc.
As you said, sometimes you are half way through your painting/drawing, that's fine, you can use that too: for example, you can make a video of how much you drew in 1 week and include small parts of a drawing process for every piece. I love watching such videos 😊 Also pay attention to what kind of videos work for other bigger creators. Hope this helps ❤️

But you're right the RUclips side of things is much more of a long term goal that will hopefully pay off later, it's not about the fastest way to monetization (I'd rather take my time and build up to that slowly, learning the content I want to make along the way, and getting better at it) Thankfully there are many ways to earn some money doing art to help support your creative work. For example I've been doing a lot of murals lately and that alone had more than paid for all the art expenses I've had. 😁

Yeahhh I can understand buying more supplies than you need at the time. In my case I see something new that I want to try and instead of just buying the bare minimum to test and see if I like it, I tend to jump in buying more than I need (like, for gouache I could get a 15ml professional primary 6pk for 36$ from Winsor and newton BUT I opt for the 10pk for 50$ and free shipping because I’m “saving money”). But then I run the risk of buying all that supplies and not liking it or using as it much as I thought I would (which happens more than I’d like to admit). I just get so excited and I love researching so much about the products for a while then I get them and it’s great… until it’s not 😂. I will say my best investment was a 70$ set of watercolors when I first started getting money and didn’t have to pay bills many years ago. I still use them. I’m always tempted to get some other cool watercolor product and I have to stop myself lol because I don’t need it.

We can't help buying supplies. It's one thing we can give ourselves, if we can't get success, or even the energy to try to make a success. Having supplies helps give you an identity. If nobody knew about you, and you died leaving all your supplies behind, at least they would say, she seemed to want to be an artist. Maybe she was one, and we just can't find the proof. I might make a channel, and never tell anybody about it. Just to put my creation out into the world. It's a big world full of people that want success. You can just do this by picking one course you bought and doing a little bit of it every day.
I had this problem when I had a traditional small business, I bought a lot of courses and books, then got overwhelmed with what I bought.
Just do little by little, day after day and you'll be surprised how quickly you get everything done. But don't think about how long it's gonna take or your brain is gonna freak out.
Just remember, no matter how long it takes, that time is gonna pass anyway.

That's so right! I've been there when I would just overthink how something would take a lot of time, so I know what kind of trap that is. I've decided not to buy anything new until I finish/use up all the courses/art supplies I've got 😊❤️

I've bought more art supplies than I need but...only the good stuff on sale. Soin, hunting sales became a bit obsessional since prices vary so wildly. I am the type that hates shopping...
So, I concluded that getting new stuff --especially if it has gorgeous colors is just another dopamine hit, like watching just one more YT vids, gambling, etc. Only solution : going cold turkey on "new" & buying only replacements.

The hard part is to stick the solution you came up with. It you stick to it and it works for you, amazing 😄❤️

Haha! 😆 Buying new things can be therapeutic, but as soon as we turn into a collector or "untouchable items", that's when it's a problem 😅 I had the same issue with buying new books too, so I'm not buying any new books until I read every single one I already have 😂 It's useful to audit yourself sometimes 😀

You're the first art youtuber I've come across who also lives in Georgia, which city are you in? A lot of what you say resonates with me, I have also spent a lot on art supplies, courses and subscriptions. Didn't need most of it...

Will it be too selfish of me to say again, that I'm glad some of it resonated with you too, because now I feel less alone? 😅 I live in Tbilisi ^^ Do you also live in Georgia?

@@Katiors Yep, also Tbilisi, Saburtalo. I walk around here with two big black dogs, so if you ever see me say hi haha

@@hyperblue8 I live a bit far away from Saburtalo, although my work place is somewhere near, so I'll definitely salute you if I ever see you :D (Yeah, sure :D I'm too introverted for that, but I'll try :D). It's such a flex to be accompanied by 2 big black doggos (in a good way :D). You are be guarded and safe all the time 😄
