My mom always made us strawberries that way, with sugar and cream. It’s so good, especially if you let the sugar sit for a bit in the berries first. I’m doing that tomorrow!
Been there! We toured the Queen’s Gallery, the Buck, the gardens and had afternoon tea in the big summer pavilion. It’s open every summer when QEII is at Balmoral. It’s fabulous.
The weird thing is, going school in England anyone who had jam sandwiches was called poor! And here I am finding out the Queen eats them, wish I could show the bullies this haha! A lot of that food seems so simple but just is reminder there’s so much naturally nice things no need for all this Just Eat and Deliveroo!
Life is simple, some ppl bully others just to show they are "special" from others. Having food to fill our tummy and not to go hungry is luxurious enough in comparison with many ppl from poor countries

It's a deceptively strong drink. I was at a wedding in France a couple of years ago. An Englishwoman was marrying a Frenchman, so the booze quotient of the even consisted of Pimms before the meal and champagne afterwards. Despite warnings the French thought it was a tasty but innocent fruit drink and were knocking it back like water. They got absolutely hammered! Later in the day, they were drinking champagne to sober up!

Ah! I was actually there in the garden this week in London! Was beautiful, really hot, had a scone with clotted cream and strawberry jam, yummy. Felt lucky to be there ☺️
When I was a kid we used tô have a afternoon tea or cofee with milk. And cake, sandwiches and etc. Every day. It could happen in our home, grandmother's home or grandaunt's home. A pity they aren't anymore among us.
For my birthday, my family and I were visiting from America & happened to be in London that day. So after touring the Abbey & pics in front of Buckingham Palace, we all had tea at Harrod’s. I had the most AMAZING tart there. I haven’t stopped thinking about it since I’ve been home, and that’s been 4yrs!! Just celebrated my 50th birthday by going to afternoon tea again. Was a great day, but it’s no London!
Your recipes look tasty! As a common person, I remove crusts from sandwiches prior to the application of other ingredients. Crusts are collected in a bag that I keep in the freezer. Later, I make crumbs from the crusts to add in other recipes. When making a Tea for a large number of guests, this would be too time consuming. Cooking for the masses is a different experience. Speed in preparation is important.
A great but simple, fancy way, of creating that wow factor, for special cosy invites/get togethers. As long as it is not tea served as a beverage. I like the sound of the royals, who liked to revise their mixtures.
You make it look so easy. Your so flawless with every stroke. Your recipes are easy and simple. At the same time, they become works of art. You are a wonderful chef. Thank you for making these videos.
I visited Bath, England once and had a lovely afternoon tea in the sanctuary of a church! It was beautifully done and delish! ☺😋 *That was the year("93" as I recall) they opened Buckingham Palace to the public for tours and I got to go!
Wow, afternoon tea with the Queen does sound amazing! In fact, I'm actually going to a fancy tea event in a few days from now, so I'm really excited to get to experience an event like that.
Thank you Darren, it was wonderful having a conversation and demonstration from you. You certainly have had a resounding career with the royal family! Enjoy your clips!💕
Reminds me so much of my youth, playing in the filthy back courts of tenement flats, setting fire to midden bins and having a jam sandwich on plain bread with crust (no butter) thrown from the third floor to catch and eat for lunch, such wonderful memories. Happy days, we even had an inside toilet and a bath in front the fire once per week. Such a privilege having a monarchy, a commonwealth and a royal family with castles, country estates, the royal yacht Britannia, royal trains and a queen who worked tirelessly for the greater good of all her subjects. I miss those days of abject poverty with ice on the inside of the windows in our council flat through winter, no summer holiday vacations and only threadbare hand me down clothes and second hand shoes.
Darren, what a joy watching your videos. Your enthusiasm is contagious! It makes the royal food actually interesting (sorry, used to think it was boring 😬). Thank you for changing my mind! All the best to you! 😊
There is nothing better on earth in the summer than a Pimm's Cup. My mother and I used to look forward to thinly sliced radish sandwiches on white bread with butter slathered on. Afternoon tea sandwiches are lovely.
All my life I have had this thought of 'being present' in an afternoon tea in the Palace Garden. Have always wondered what foods are served; Chef Grady, now I know and I love the fruit drink you created.
had an English roommate many years ago, she made cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches, but she used onion buns, so delicious, great combination 👍 thank you for sharing!
Hey Chef, you think one day you could show us how you make a strawberry or plum jam like you would at Balmoral? I'd love to see that and hear the stories you'd have with it :)
In the early 60s my mother would make small sandwiches cut with animal shaped cookie cutters for our annual visit to the Houston Zoo. The 70s brought boarding school in Kentucky where we had Teatime at 4pm-cinammon toast, shortbread or cookies...no savory sandwiches though. Thank you for this entertainment! Beverly Alexander Martin
Everything looks delicious! My favorite “summer meal” is cucumber, tomato, cream cheese with fresh basil on Hawaiian rolls (with a dash of salt and pepper) ...I’ve never thought to use a potato peeler on cucumbers but now it’s a must try! TFS Darren!
I so enjoy your videos!! I would love to have Tea with you!! What a dream! (My hubby would learn I’m not so crazy! There really are great people on RUclips!😅)
Oh dang. Now I have to plan a trip back to England. I didn’t even get to see the ‘backyard’ of Buckhouse when I was there last time… it’s awesome that the Queen has opened this area up.
Aaaah, alas. I have no garden. Oh, the pains of an apartment. And yes, Chef, one of the things on my "Blind Bucket List" is to eventually visit Buckingham Palace. ....I really don't know how my cane would be handled though, haha.
My daughter and granddaughter took me to tea for Mother’s Day. It was awesome. I want to have a tea party for other granddaughters, daughter-in-laws. I have plenty of English tea cups, saucers and tea cups from my Mother-in-law with her Scottish husband!
Hi Darren, I loved this video. I am a tea time fanatic and love making dainty, luscious tea sandwiches. In the past, I've made dozens for the Devon Horse Show in Devon, PA. I've also made them for friends' wedding and baby showers. My personal favorite is cucumber with butter or cream cheese with chives, a sprinkle of salt and a good grind of black pepper on crustless white bread. I was EA to an EVP at an English company in the U.S. for 16 years. When William and Kate got married, I made a bunch of tea sandwiches at home and brought them in, along with a platter of Scottish shortbread, Digestives, and Pimm's. I'm retired now but still love to make assorted tea sandwiches to have with a cup of Twinings Earl Grey, which I understand is Queen Elizabeth's favorite tea as well. Love your videos. You inspired me to purchase my first Cash and Mason bowls. I'm very partial to the batter bowl with the spout and leave it out on my kitchen island because it's too cute to stick inside the cabinets. Cheers! 🍾🥂

I enjoyed the simplicity of this video - and it finally answered the question on why anyone would want a cucumber sandwich (that'd be me, now!). However, I noticed that very few seasonings were used - I'm not sure if I could survive without black pepper and a tiny bit of extra salt. Anyway, great vid - thanks Darren, much appreciated.
Oh, I haven't had a Pimm's cup in decades. Thanks for reminding me. Now I will need to buy a bottle. About 30 years ago a bartender introduced me to Pimm's because I was already a gin drinker. It is a wonderful summertime treat.
Darren thank you so much for sharing these delicious ideas with us. They are so simple I am looking forward to trying them all. Looking forward to more recipes and more. Love the ice machine
I sometimes peel them, but Im sure I'll keep making mine with the seeds - and lettuce with mayo. I'm sure the Queen's sandwich is good, but nothing beats my tomato sandwich, made with home grown tomatoes, of course!

I visited Bath, England once and had a lovely afternoon tea in the sanctuary of a church! It was beautifully done and delish! ☺😋
*That was the year("93" as I recall) they opened Buckingham Palace to the public for tours and I got to go!
Sandwiches look delicious 😅
All of this looks lovely! I can hardly wait to have my own little garden party!
Hi how are you doing?
Hello ❤️
How are you?
Wow, afternoon tea with the Queen does sound amazing! In fact, I'm actually going to a fancy tea event in a few days from now, so I'm really excited to get to experience an event like that.
What sounds amazing about it?
@@MovieJustin right?! This is what passes for amazing? I’m a foodie and one of the poor folk and I even eat and cook better!
Thank you Darren, it was wonderful having a conversation and demonstration from you. You certainly have had a resounding career with the royal family! Enjoy your clips!💕
I love your posts and the recipes!!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and memories with us!
Tea sandwiches look so good, love them all. I enjoy stories of royals. You are very enjoyable to watch.
Hello Dianne Dutton. How are you doing?
OMG!! Love You, Darren!! Diana FOREVER!!!!! Clotted Creme FOREVVVVVERRRRRR LOLOL !!!! Blessings Brother!!!
I'd love to see that and hear the stories you'd have with it :)
just youtube it and call it a day
In the early 60s my mother would make small sandwiches cut with animal shaped cookie cutters for our annual visit to the Houston Zoo. The 70s brought boarding school in Kentucky where we had Teatime at 4pm-cinammon toast, shortbread or cookies...no savory sandwiches though. Thank you for this entertainment! Beverly Alexander Martin
Darren, I keep saying this, but you are an absolute delight to watch and listen to :D
Love too see Buckingham palace it's been nearly 30 yrs left England missing very much.hp too be there soon god bless.
Hello ❤️
How are you?
I really love those tea sandwiches Darren. Thank you for sharing all of this fascinating information! 👍🏻❤️
What lovely treats to have,l could eat them now, and you make it look so easy, beautiful garden ,
Everything looks delicious! My favorite “summer meal” is cucumber, tomato, cream cheese with fresh basil on Hawaiian rolls (with a dash of salt and pepper) ...I’ve never thought to use a potato peeler on cucumbers but now it’s a must try! TFS Darren!
@CE Hart.... That sounds nice must try sometime. Not sure what those rolls, are though that you have.
I have friends from south America who swear that removing strips of peel from Cucumber will keep them from causing stomach distress
@@earnold1896 they're a slightly sweet roll. Like a Portuguese sweet bread, but softer
@@LindaC616 Hello. How are you doing?
@@earnold1896 King’s Hawaiian bread.
Little Mexican me always wanted to try this! Thanks for the recipes everything looks so light and fresh.
Cheers! 🍾🥂
Thanks Tia, I love afternoon tea

I just love watching your videos. I have made several of your recipes and felt special whilst eating them. You are such a happy person. A joy to watch. Regards from the U.S.
aww, thanks Josh
I live near Seattle in the States. For some reason, I thought Pimm’s was a beer! Hahahaha Silly me. This was a lovely presentation. Looks so refreshing. My Mother is 85, and I think I’ll make some of these for her. Easier to eat when cut in quarters. Thank you. I LOVE these videos. You’re such a nice and talented person! Hugs from Seattle🌸
Another Seattle person here 🙌😊
Proper British picnic drink.
It is So pleasant to watch you and listen to you. You are So open- hearted! Thanks for the video!👍 And the dishes are so simple, but really a Delight❤
Excellent 👌🏻 Greetings from Scotland 😊 Have a wonderful day everyone 🌻 Stay blessed

Hi Michelle how are you doing?

Darren, What I like about your Channel and everything else you publish, is that your recipes work and work well. I have found only one other recipe source that is consistent as you are, America's Test Kitchen. I have a personal recipe software application with over 1,200 recipes (all of which I have made) and you are well represented.
@JeffreyBrown Julia Child's recipes are foolproof/ excellent as well. She was a real stickler for testing and retesting her recipes and getting the measurement conversions exactly right for American cooks. My two culinary heroes...Darren McGrady and Julia Child. 💕
@@tiamia7139 I like Julia Child also. Amazing woman and chef. She changed the USA forever.
@@jhbrown1010 She sure did. She was so intelligent, hardworking and funny. When my daughter and I were in Paris several years ago, we stood outside the apt. building where she and Paul had lived. I would have loved to have known her. "My Life in France" is in my Top 10 all-time favorite books.
Loved Julia Child! I remember watching her show for not only her cooking abilities, but for the sheer entertainment. I'm fortunate enough to be able to watch old reruns of her show atm
Martha Stewart recipies are foolproof! They are also delicious.
Love your tea party food you prepared for the Queen everything looks so delicious and yummy, my church is having our first tea party and we are trying to prepared some of the Queen's favourites food and i would love ❤ to get some of your recipes, i think having some of the Queen's sandwiches and pastries will get me the winning prize at the end of the tea party. ❤❤❤watching your videos and am watching from NASSAU BAHAMAS 🇧🇸
Can you teach us in a near future vid recipe of how to make British sausage rolls? Is it considered part of an afternoon tea? Thanks!
Lovely sandwiches , DAINTY , DELICATE AND DELICIOUS , how beautifully described !
Thanks Darren for sharing your expirience with the queen, l am a big fun of the royal family, except Harry AND that women
What a lovely idea. Will try the sandwiches and strawberrys and feel.like a queen
Apart from the lovely food, I love the fantastic chats with darren!! Thanks :)
We always had tea with something sweet or savory daily in the afternoon with my family.. its like a tradition in Pakistan🇵🇰 😊😄❤️❤️
Oh, I haven't had a Pimm's cup in decades. Thanks for reminding me. Now I will need to buy a bottle. About 30 years ago a bartender introduced me to Pimm's because I was already a gin drinker. It is a wonderful summertime treat.
Winston is such a handsome boy! And looking so royal in his crown
Winston is always looking sharp! 😀
@@candied.crabapples Hello. How are you doing?
Darren thank you so much for sharing these delicious ideas with us. They are so simple I am looking forward to trying them all. Looking forward to more recipes and more. Love the ice machine
I never realized that I have been making tomato sandwiches incorrectly. I will now seed and peel!! Those sarnies look delich!!
I sometimes peel them, but Im sure I'll keep making mine with the seeds - and lettuce with mayo. I'm sure the Queen's sandwich is good, but nothing beats my tomato sandwich, made with home grown tomatoes, of course!
@@lisaredwine4857 true nothing beats the juice running down your hands when you're eating a tomato sandwich. Of course probably not exactly lady like... Lol
I feel so common with my juicy tomato sandwich. ☹️
@@lisaredwine4857 yeah i think including seeds would be nicer.
Toasted with mayo is my fave.
Hi, I've just come across you, your great, I love listening to you, and your obviously a very good chef/cook
I too love cooking.
Craig from UK, in Thailand
Al of these recipes sound so lovely and refreshing!! I’m definitely going to make them. 😋
Wow Darren you make it look so simple!!
Is it always cold sandwiches? Do they ever enjoy grilled tomato sandwiches at tea? Or anything au jus or perhaps hot filling? Even skillet toast?
Good grief no. A hot sandwich would be a toastie not a sandwich. That's greasy cafe food not tea party food.
Oh Wow! This is the firs time I've seen or heard of Darren McGrady. I loved the Afternoon Tea video and some of the others he recommended. I've subscribed and look forward to many of his entertaining and informative videos.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks Elizabeth
Hi Elizabeth how are you doing?
Do you miss not being at the Palace? Would you ever go back?
