@@gabrielabreu5200 the thing was that it is DESIGNED to pick up the slightest sign of a helicopter blade because of pop-up attacks. Hell, the test pilots during gun-cam exercises stated that they HATED facing the damn thing because you had to have something solid between you and the SPAAG to not be shot down.
The M247 Sergeant York was a pretty terrible AA, which is why it never wound up entering proper service. When the DIVAD (Division Air Defence) competition came down to the General Dynamics XM246 and Ford's XM247, it was clear that the XM247 was objectively worse in almost every single way. Its guns could interfere with its radar when elevated and had jamming problems, but most damning of all was the performance of its targeting computer. The M247 couldn't lock onto a helicopter flying low over treelines but would randomly lock onto anything it thought might be a heli's rotors, such as the cooling fans on the roofs of buildings. This last problem caused several minor injuries when during a demonstration the computer, upon activation, turned the guns towards the review stands and the officials watching the demonstration dived for cover. Later, after restarting the computer, it was successfully able to lock onto the target tank, but kept hitting the ground 300m in front of the target. At no point during the demonstration did the M247 hit any of the targets. Previous testing showed it suffered hydraulic leaks in cold weather and its ECCM system could be defeated by even basic jamming. It also couldn't keep up with modern tanks like Abrams and Bradley, which was the entire point of the DIVADs program in the first place -- the M163 VADS was considered too slow. Later, in 1984, the M247 was tested against drones flying in a straight line, but could not hit them and continued to be unable to target them even when they were made to hover, leading testers to add radar reflectors to the drones in a desperate effort to give a large enough radar return for it to target. In the end, it took adding four radar reflectors per drone to allow the Sgt York's radar to target them, and even then it didn't destroy the drone, just knock it off target so that it would eventually crash. After it was cancelled, they used them mostly as bombing targets for USAF planes, which is an ironic turn of fate. Given that General Dynamics XM246 scored 19 kills in testing vs the XM247's 9 kills and was better in nearly every way, there has been some speculation that corruption was the reason for the M247 being adopted instead. DIVAD was probably doomed anyway, since the greater range of helicopter-mounted missiles was already near the edge of what these gun-based systems were capable of, so even if there had been an M246 instead of an M247, it would likely not have lasted too long in service before needing replacement by something like the M6 Linebacker or the HMMWV Avenger SAMs.
