  • A.S.A.P. Supplies looks at how to test fuel level gauges and senders.
When replacing either the fuel, water or waste level gauge or sender on your boat it is important to match the resistance of the gauge to the sender. In this video we look at American and European resistance and how to identify which of these your gauge or sender is.

Thanks for making this clear. So measuring a US sender
    Empty 240 ohms
    1/2 tank 135 ohms
    Full tank 33 ohms

Hi Jeff. That is largely correct but at the middle it is around 103 ohms rather than 135 ohms.

I have a four Winns boat and replaced the trim sender which is a 11 to 146 ohm sender as per Volvo Penta
The Faria gauge GP8001A swing is only about half the marked travel
I have done contuity checks from sender to ECU (EFI Engine ) and to gauge and all is good
I am also getting 5 V at the sender
I found a a 120 ohm resistor in the circuit green/red wire between ECU and sender
I am now lost but I suspect the gauge his knackered

      Hello Gary,
Thank you for your comment. In terms of testing the gauge and sender it would be similar to the level senders shown in this video. From the sender you would need to test the resistance that is being given out at Up/Mid/Down to make sure it is correct to the 11 to 146 Ohms you should be getting. For the gauge you can test this by not connecting the sender wire to the gauge. It should then read either hard over or at the bottom of the scale and if you make a connection between ground and signal it should then go full deflection. If you could try these things and let us know how you get on. Finally I was not able to find details on a GP8001 Faria gauge but if you could check this number and if correct I can contact Faria to check on the resistance this works to.
      Cheers, Matt

I am not getting the 11 to 146 at the gauge . This Volvo 5.0 GXI-P EFI engine has a 120 ohm resister between ECU and sender
I did a. continuity check between ECU and sender 3 wires and ECU and gauge , gauge to ground and 12V power

so can you still used an Euro fuel guage witH US SENDER ? i THINK MY GUaGE is euro (bought on ebay) , it reading backwards.. also is the correction just simply put the signal to the negative ? or do I need a us guage with us sender ? thx....
