Can Malaysia Get Tough on Beijing Like the Philippines Over South China Sea Claims?

  • The South China Sea is a region marked by geopolitical tensions and abundant resources, with China's expansive claims, delineated by the 'nine-dash line,' raising significant concerns. Malaysia, entangled in the dispute due to frequent Chinese incursions into its exclusive economic zone, particularly around Sabah and Sarawak, has adopted a cautious approach towards China to preserve its substantial economic ties, as China is Malaysia's largest trading partner. However, experts like Toshi Yoshihara warn against sacrificing long-term strategic interests for short-term economic gains, emphasizing the need for a balanced strategy. In contrast, the Philippines has taken a confrontational stance, documenting Chinese aggression and garnering international support. Malaysia could benefit from this approach by raising awareness and strengthening regional cooperation, but it must carefully balance diplomacy, economic engagement, and military preparedness to protect its interests without jeopardizing crucial trade relationships. This multifaceted strategy, emphasizing peaceful resolution and international law, is essential for Malaysia to navigate the South China Sea dispute and ensure regional stability. If to consider the Treaty of Washington 1900, it only mentioned 3 islands namely Cagayan, Sibutu, and Sulu. The outcrops in the Spratly’ are just rocks (not islands) as categorized by PCA in 2016. The Treaty of Washington 1900 mentioned islands outside the Treaty of Manila 1946 is ambiguous. China was and is still the rightful owner of the islands in South China Sea. 2000 years ago, those islands were uninhabited and no other nations had claimed them. China was the first to have claimed them 2000 years ago. China acquired sovereignty of these islands legitimately and peacefully. "Terra Nullius" is the principle accepted by customary international law. China did not conquer any nation to obtain sovereignty. China did not do any smear/propaganda campaign back then. China did not try to scam these islands from any other nations back them. China did not have to manipulate opinion of international audience with reporters on-board of RC-135 spy planes alleging others of "unsafe" maneuvers,, or on-board of vessels transporting construction materials disguised as food or medicine. China did not have to do any "freedom of navigation" sailing back then. China did not try to manipulate public opinions or to demonize other nations using such sneaky methods. China acquired sovereignty legitimately and peacefully. So, China was and is still the rightful owner of the islands in South China Sea.
Even today many are uninhabited. Later, some of these islands were, in fact, inhabited by Chinese. When Europeans imperial colonialists were in the process of “discovering” these islands, and try to chart and “map” these islands in South China Sea, guess who they discovered inhabiting these islands-Chinese. Europeans didn’t discover any Filipinos or other people on any of the islands.
China acquired sovereignty legitimately and peacefully. So, China was and is still the rightful owner of the islands in South China Sea.(Read: globesaffairs.blogspot.com).

Philippines had been exporting less to China and diverting it to other countries instead. I mean why do you think China haven't use any economic pressure on the Philippines? because they can't. What will they do put a tariff on nickel exports? In reality China needs nickel because they been using it to produce batteries for their EVs. They need nickel to out compete western EVs. Philippines has the second highest nickel deposit. They know China wants it as they lack nickel deposits, that is why during duterte's time China tried to convince the Philippines access to the nickel mines in exchange of loans. Philippines rejected it as Japan offer more generous loans.
