- Southern fish camps have been serving fried fish with hushpuppies, coleslaw, and french fries for decades now. Starting as shacks on river banks, the fish camps grew in popularity among local textile mill workers. Although the textile industry would eventually be outsourced, the fish camps continue to be an important part of the community.

This video made me cry. I love being from the Carolinas
These kinds of videos are so good. I learn so much about other people through their food and what it means to them. Would love to eat at those fish camps someday!
wow, what a history of how fish camps were so vital to the community. Amazing to listen to hardworking stories. Love from India.
Will visit in future with my folks.
Please do!
I grew up eating at river view fish camp off Wilkinson BLvd. I remember the old pirate with his wooden leg that would greet all the children. Gosh I miss those days. Today's younger generation are not into dining on hard wooden benches and tables. They want better ambiance and bigger menus. Sadly, fish camps are dying out due to this and people are much more health conscious today.
cool thing to hear that old family restaurants is still in Carolina
The best denim and twill came from those mills. If you're a denimhead like me, you know what I'm talking about.
Rocky River Springs Fish House in Norwood NC (near Albemarle) has really good Food. Great Fish, Hushpuppies, slaw, tea etc. Been in business and family owned since 1968.If anybody is ever in or near stanly county they should definitely check them out. Not real far off of Hwy 52 for any Mrytle Beach travelers.
i love that place
"Thursdeey, Frideey and Saturdeey"... proper Carolina accent!
I loved the feel and info of this video! Great job!
well that was refreshing to watch
Wow all these commenters must be fun at parties .... ITS JUST SOME DAMN GOOD FISH CHILL
beautiful segment, great change of pace!
Village Restaurant in Denton is our go-to spot.
Really enjoyed this. THANK you.
What a wonderful video.
Loved the history!
I go to Mayflower every time I'm back home. Also, Shiloh is still going strong up in Chesterfield County. They're still out there!
Woohoo!!! I love fish houses and this video just made me really hungry! I used to work and live in the U.S., in Jackson, ms. and my work has allowed me to be all over the city, the state, and often nearby Alabama, Memphis, New Orleans and Florida. Driving around at work and leisurely, i always make sure i try the Local's fish houses and i could say that a lot of them are really good and each time is a wonderful eating experience! Mississippi alone has tons to offer! Catfish, pan trout, perch, and Buffalo! Really good! I would especially like to mention my favorite place in Jackson, ms, Harvey's and Martin's! Just a hole in the wall type of place, good fish, perfectly fried, and nice people!!
great video. the guy was a gold mine for this video!
Am I the only one who thinks this guy looks like the lost twin brother of the guard Piscatella from Orange is the New Black?
Gaston County Fish camp....I can't believe you left off Surf and Turf. As a child Long Creek was the best.
seems tasty
Good video
My uncle Ben owns twin tops!

I tranced out and when I came back I thought it pressed the wrong video... Damn son thats some history
The guy on the right at 0:39 looks just like Geoffrey Rush
These were not in my part of NC
OH NO, please do not tell me all those small town Cotton mills closed, that is so sad to hear
What a huge decline of fish camps in the Carolinas! 'Tis how people lose their jobs evidently for unemployment. They must've been bankrupt with the government.
not enough food shots
im cryin over a fried fish shop smh
Mr Lineberger... ahhhww
Aww Twin Tops.. there only foing take out
wtf are hush puppies?!
I actually googled it and it says they are shoes, that can't be wth he's referring too
"A hushpuppy is a small, savory, deep-fried ball made from cornmeal-based batter. Hushpuppies are frequently served as a side dish with seafood and other deep-fried foods." - Wikipedia.
p.s. Not sure why you didnt see that, its like the 3rd result when you google it.
I'f I'm not mistaken, they're like a little fried ball of cornmeal & flour that's been battered beforehand in probably the same batter the fish is coated with
Please try one sometime
Yep just try it, the Wikipedia thing is making me sad.
free the fish!!!
thursdi
I can't believe something so interesting and uplifting could devolve into such pettiness and hate. Jesus. These are the same kind of people who tore down a monument of Ulysses S. Grant in San Francisco the other day, just 'cus. (FYI he was the General, later US president, who led the Union army to defeat the slave-owning CSA. Yeah.)
But yeah the video was awesome and I am saddened I even felt the need to comment on that other stuff. Thank you for making this. As a North Carolinian living overseas this brought me fond memories.
@Kevin Swift,Their parents failed them that is for sure.
That has got to be the whitest town in America.
Vanessa Do America is very white
It really explains the low crime rate.
Gobbersmack did you do research? Or did you base the crime rate off this video about fried fish?
I'm from Gaston county. I can assure you Gastonia and its surrounding areas has plenty of black people as well as Latinos and other races. I go to Long Creek all the time and when it still had a dining room just as many black people ate there as whites.
Hailey Brown Used to have a dining room? is it take out only now?
This video is basically.
Picture of the restaurant.

The end.
It was dope, dude. Not sure what you smokin'.
Well, that cant be healthy, eating in this kind of place more than 2 times a week,
Unfortunately I don't think these people had the luxury of eating healthy 14 meals a week.
ENGLAND is my CITY😎😎!!!!!!
Who the FLIP ARE YOU???
How's the Chinese food in that town?
What's a hush puppy?
Whoa...
GFINHK incredibly sad for you
No Nz, Xanadu ☺
Strange how leftist comments...please learn to read.. I said COMMENTS.. not videos.... get a lot of hate replies yet never seem to get thumbs down... interesting...
Comfort food is great but the south has gotta work on it's diet...
You gotta keep it in context. When these places were mega popular the mill workers who frequented them probably didn't have the luxury of eating healthy 14 days a week. And if you look at the shots of them back in the day (in this video) they actually look trim and healthy. The only issue is that the mill working thing went away and people continued frequenting these places and others like McD's, Bojangle's, etc. But the tradition in and of itself ain't bad. Everything in moderation!
fried seafood is definitely not my favorite way to eat seafood
still good tho dude
why doesn't anyone (including the SFA) address SEGREGATION in this video?
Segregation? Black people can eat there if they want, it's just that the county this was filmed in (Gaston County) is literally 83% white and just 14% black.

"Do you think it is a vain hope that one day man will find joy in noble deeds of light and mercy, rather than in the coarse pleasures he indulges in today -- gluttony, fornication, ostentation, boasting, and envious vying with his neighbor? I am certain this is not a vain hope and that the day will come soon."
NOT IN MURICA!
😒 only one demographic eating there huh?! 🤔interesting.
charro028 😒 only comment you could think of was something to stir an unnecessary huh?! 🤔interesting
I had maybe two black kids in my school, school in the next area was mostly black, and everyone around here is rather nice, but everywhere has dickheads
Why do americans make everything about race smh.
So if I make the same statement of a fried chicken joint in Memphis, would it be interesting?
Yeah, only one demographic eating there because the other demographic is in prison for committing most of the crimes in US
This dude waxes poetic about an era of segregation & lynching like it was a jubilant period in history when "things were right". Very disappointed in Eater but not surprised.
Believe it or not, even in the worst time periods in history, during war, famine, floods and epidemics, people were allowed to LIKE THINGS. Even fried fish restaurants. Get over it.
Get over it? Typical comment from a deplorable. I’ll get over it when cops stop lynching black people & our laws start protecting black people from getting legally murdered by cops. I’ll get over it when we get rid of for profit prison systems who’ve lobbied states to create draconian laws making easier to keep people in prison for lessor crimes for longer periods while also fining states if their jails aren’t full. I’ll get over it when states, particularly southern states stop trying to pass restrictive ID laws making it harder to get IDs to help prevent voting which is specifically aimed at preventing minorities from voting. I'll get over it when cities & municipalities fully fund education in our public schools particularly in our inner cities so that our youth have a greater chance at succeeding and making this country even greater.
OK, now bring it around to where this has something to do with family style fried fish restaurants.
pete_rock2310 calm down dude
@Stephen C Thank you, you did a great job in this video.
not a slim person in sight
That's not even true, watch the video, lol.
@@kevinswift8654 please point out all these slim people in the video on my comment from 2 years ago...
@@plummet3860 Woman walking in at 0:07. Both waitresses at 0:11 and the busboy in the back. Both guys on the right at 0:37. Everybody who shows up in the shots from back in the day (if those don't count, fine). All 4 workers at 3:46. 3 workers at 5:10. The old couple walking in at 5:12, and the hostess isn't really overweight, either. The family on the left at 5:21. The guy on the right in the blue at 5:23. The waitress on the right at 5:38. I get your point man upon review there are a lot of overweight people. But not everyone is overweight, so your statement was false. So what are you being hateful about with your hyperbole? Or were you just trying to be funny? Please explain!
@@kevinswift8654 nah ill just enjoy the fact you wasted your time on something i wrote at probably 3am years ago
