Leslie Phillips was a great actor and entertainer. Thank you Shar for a very informative tribute to one of our most dearly loved legends. Ding Dong! ❤️🏴🇬🇧
You’re so very welcome Glenda! I so delighted you enjoyed the video! Leslie truly was a great star! 🌟🤩 I hope you have a wonderful weekend! Xxxx
Thanks for your reply regarding Leslie Phillips,
Even now still miss him
He was just one of a kind
I'm now 69 and such as Leslie Phillips mark my time and what to me were the most wonderful days of Britain. So many have now gone and with them such a time of warmth.
I thought Carry on Teacher was Leslie's best of the carry ons...and the way he handled pronouncing the Teachers name Mrs Alcock and "getting one over" the censor,"I just flattened it and used my facial expression...he(the censor) he did us a favor" RIP Leslie Auckland New Zealand 2024
Absolutely, "Carry On Teacher" is indeed a classic in the series, and Leslie Phillips' performance as the smooth-talking Mr. Alistair Grigg is iconic. His clever handling of the name Mrs. Alcock, along with his witty facial expressions! Joan Sims was absolutely brilliant and I loved the glimpses of a young Carol White! Thank you for sharing your memories from Auckland, New Zealand! xxxxx
He was my crush way back in the 50’s and it was no secret that I always burned a candle for him. My eldest son took me to the National exhibition Centre in Birmingham to meet Lesley Phillips in about 2010. I think it would’ve been when he was signing autographs at a convention for people dealing with movie, props and things like that, he was an absolute darling and I still treasure his autograph to this day after fancying him for over 50 years
What a delightful story! It's so lovely to hear about your long-lasting admiration for Leslie Phillips. Meeting a childhood crush after so many years must have been an incredibly special moment for you. It's wonderful that he lived up to your expectations and left you with a cherished memory and autograph. Thank you for sharing this lovely experience with us! xxxx
He deserves a memorial 😢
Leslie Phillips was a brilliant comic actor. His Biography, was both moving and funny. what a great man? Leslie, along with Terry-Thomas were the best.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and I agree about Terry Thomas! Thank you for watching! xxxx
Memorials are made by the descendents. Looks like his children never forgave him. Hence, no one bothered to make one for him. Very sad. He gave so much happiness to others. RiP. Thank you for posting. He was part of my childhood in that i grew up watching his films
It's a difficult one - his children might not have any say over his memorial as iI am guessing that his wife would have been next of kin and then it would be down to her to decide on a memorial - I do also wonder if it's all in hand and it's just a question of the time it takes for the earth to settle etc - it might be a simple as that - lets hope so! Thank you so much for your comment and for watching the video - it's always appreciated, thank you! xxxx
If achieving the rank of OBE means anything it should at least mark his life in the chapel at St Paul’s.
Fascinating. Disgusting he has no headstone.
Bet his family were very happy to have his money and home after he died but not the respect to give him a headstone. They should be ashamed of themselves
@@cazzawazza9553 you are so right. I tried contacting his children but there are to many phillips on social media. To have meant so much to this country and have no headstone is disgusting
Thanks for taking the time to pay respects on our behalf, as not everyone is able to too do so in person and for the lovely, honest and humanising tribute to a British film legend.
It's my absolute pleasure Marlene! I so thoroughly enjoy taking you with me - thank you for your lovely comment and for watching the video - I very much appreciate it xxxxx
Many happy years spent watching Leslie Phillips in a variety of roles. The roles may have varied, yet his presence remains constant 🙏
Very much for me too! I can't even remember the first time I saw Leslie in a film - I think I must have been so young - he was just always there and often watched and enjoyed! xxxx
He turned in a wonderful performance in the third radio series of The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, playing a disillusioned computer.
Oh I didn't hear that! I did watch the TV series though! xxxx
@BeautifulBadandBizarre It's not my favourite of the radio series, but I do listen to it sometimes just to hear his performance
Correct me if I'm wrong, but there's only Jim Dale alive from the original Team... @@BeautifulBadandBizarre
I have his autobiography and fed of the Navy Lark, I love his voice.
Isn't it fantastic!!!! Very honest and a real eye opener - I found I couldn't put it down once I'd started! xxxxx
Thank you I enjoyed his acting throughout my child hood, he made everything look effortless, and fun , he was born the same year as my mum, he seems to have been a lovely person .
You're welcome! It's wonderful to hear that Leslie Phillips' performances brought joy to your childhood. He truly had a remarkable talent for making everything seem effortless and fun. It's touching to know that he shared the same birth year as your mum. Indeed, he left behind a legacy of not just acting talent, but also warmth and charm. Unbelievable that this wonderfully talented man, liked and known by so many does not have a headstone for his grave. Is there an actors guild that could organise something or even his family have one erected. Thank you for such another lovely tribute.❤
Leslie Phillips was indeed a beloved figure, and it's understandable to hope for a proper memorial. Leslie was a national treasure the best of British his work in tv and film were legendary he should have been knighted this is marvellous and informative tribute!
Thank you so much for your lovely comment - and I do agree - he was such a legend and should have been knighted! xxx
My aunt was in a couple of stage productions with Phillips in the 50s. In her later years, I used to weave him into the conversation at some point each time I saw her with the inevitable and predictable result. The whole family including her `very` twin sister was in on this, but for some reason she never caught on. `Young Lesley` must have made quite an impression. Mind you any mention of Kenneth Williams and one or two others tended to have the same effect, but Phillips was the favourite.
Not too sure what she would have thought about the cat food tho`....
That's such a delightful story! It sounds like "Young Leslie" certainly did leave a lasting impression, becoming a staple in your family's conversations. It's amusing how certain names can evoke such strong reactions! As for the cat food mention, well, that might have been an unexpected twist in the tale (tail)! Thank you for your comment and for watching the video - much appreciated xxxx
He had a small part in pool of London with bonar colleano. He was a real star

@@BeautifulBadandBizarre Shar, I’ve just finished watching a re-run of an episode of “Midsomer Murders”, here in Australia. I had a feeling that one of the characters was Leslie Phillips, which the credits confirmed! How coincidental is that? Of course, he was the suave gent, with an eye for the ladies, appreciating one’s “magnificent ankles”! 😂 I was waiting for him to say, “Ding-dong”…😆 He played the part really well and, as you highlighted, he was an outstanding actor.♥️
Hi there Karen! What a delightful coincidence! Have you seen Leslie
as " Mr. Bodley ", in
the film, " Not Now ,
Darling ".
My " hubby " played
the role in " Am-Dram ",
at Romsey, Hampshire.😊.
A very funny play.
I did prop's, set
decorating, sound effects,
and got a dummy
( mannequin) from Salisbury
Theatre. It did turn a few
heads as it rode along, nude,
in the back of my car.😊
I think our cast did a good
job, actually....😊📖😊🇬🇧.
I haven't!!! Although I have heard that "Not Now, Darling" is indeed a hilarious play, with Leslie Phillips's portrayal of Mr. Bodley being memorable. It must have been quite an adventure to be involved in an amateur production of it, especially with your roles behind the scenes. I'm sure your cast did a fantastic job bringing the play to life, and it sounds like you had some interesting moments, especially with the mannequin in the back of your car! Thank you for sharing your story-it sounds like a lot of fun! xxxx
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre
Thank you for your positive
comment.😊
The Am-Dram group we
were with did 4 or 5 performances.
A lot of work to prepare the set ,
e.g., I decorated it, hubby
bought a chandelier for the
"fur shop", hubby's father carpetted
the whole stage, I devised a box of
glass for off stage "accident " ( someone
heard something and dropped a tray),
I got some posh, striped curtains and
made a cover for the central circular
chair (the type sometimes seen in old films,
in reception ), When time was running short
before first night, I stayed alone in
the hall, putting up wallpaper ! Bit scarey,
cos no phone,( vandals)
( Iused a broom to apply glue to the paper,
which had to be on the floor : tall walls ! )
Someone donated a real mink coat....
Someone ( else) took it after the last night...
I found the hat, and kept that ! (Shhh!)
I suspect the mink-taker might have destroyed
the gorgeous coat, being strongly against the
fur trade....so am I , but this was a period piece.
and the mink was central to the story....
But despite the huge amount of work, it made
happy memories, and got a good write - up in the
local paper. I have to admit I much prefer the script
of the play to the script of the film📖. Loved Leslie Phillips
in the film, but my hubby did "get" the rogueish character
of "Mr. Bodley" very well. So many laughs,
and so much really funny " bits of business"😊
Interesting project. We still quote
from it, 34 years later !😊📖🦉🌹💙🇬🇧

Happy Sunday Shar, and mine is. Have just watched your excellent bio- vid of Leslie Phillips. Sadly never saw him on stage but. His output of films, television and radio have given me,and thousands more people some great memories of his multi talented career. It's true to say,its hard to really know any actor, especially our favourites. The ones before Social Media!! They had mystery & mystique. I never knew anything about his early childhood. Of the times, but he seemed to have enjoyed his.Amazing how love& happiness can make up for a lack of martial things Hindsight is wonderful, glad to see he turned down the " Carry On's " Being of the age of " steam radio" i loved The Navy Lark😂 and whilst the ding- dong & Helllooo are well known I'd like to give a shout out for the nautical " 'er left hand down a bit " As Troutbridge sank another pier😂 You highlighted the saddest parts with tact and care& compassion. Early death of his dad( and what seems to have been traumatic event forced to view the body) The family suffering due to suicides can't have helped. And in later in life when Angela Scolar felt the need to leave the stage.I loved her in " you rang my lord" & "as time goes by " Why his is an unmarked grave i can't fathom. If the estate doesn't want to.I'd chip into a public fund and erect one, maybe the alleged brew ha har about his widow and the house 😢. Sorry this has been a right rambling comment, you've been away far to long and I've forgotten how to be pithy and to the point 😢 So glad to have you & your channel back❤😊 Until the next time best wishes & hugs Allan&Family xxx
Hello Allan! Thank you so much as ever for your absolutely lovely comment!!! You truly made my day! I'm so glad you enjoyed the Leslie Phillips video. It's true, the mystery and mystique of actors from the pre-social media era added a special charm. Their image was also more carefully cultivated as it were, these days anything goes! 'The Navy Lark'-classic humor! Just loved it! Also, thank you for your thoughtful reflections on Leslie's life and the challenges he faced - I think you're spot on! And your idea of a public fund for a grave marker is so thoughtful! I would imagine the reason there is no headstone yet could be that the land needs time to settle - I hope that's the reason and that there will be a memorial there soon xxx Your 'rambling' comment was a joy to read, so please carry on rambling lol and I'm grateful for your warm welcome back. Best wishes and hugs to you and your family! ❤️😊
I absolutely loved Leslie Phillips, especially his "ding dong" moments 😂. I watched a serious crime drama film yesterday where he played a detective . He was brilliant and just as believable as in his comedy roles. What a brilliant actor.
Me too!!!! He was a great acted - very professional and so talented - both in comedy and drama ❤❤❤
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre I'm going to be saying ding dong for the next week, you realise 😂
You wont believe this but it's true - I knew I would be uploading today and I woke up in the early hours thinking 'D0ng-Dong' although I also had the tune 'Some Girls Will' by Racey - running through my head - it's a worry lol xxxx
Leslie Phillips mother used to live in guildford, and on a couple of occasions I saw him in North Street
Mind you seeing a celeb in guildford was an everyday occurrence.......Great place to live. Never see anyone down here in southsea bit of a dump. X
How exciting that you had the chance to spot Leslie Phillips in Guildford! I'd have loved to have seen him! Guildford does seem to have its fair share of celebrity sightings, doesn't it? On a personal note, I once had the pleasure of attending a book signing with Nigella Lawson there a few years back. As for Southsea, (that did give me a giggle!) while it may not offer the same star-studded encounters, I'm sure it has its own unique charms waiting to be discovered! Thank you so much for sharing your memories and watching the video - it's greatly appreciated xxxx
Hi, another great video. Saw Leslie Philips being wheeled around in his wheelchair one afternoon in Selfridges. He did look unwell. Breakspear Crematorium near where I live has Brian Connelly.. Kenneth Connor. Pat Coombs. Jessie Matthews. Diana Rigg. Plus loads of other Soap Stars.
Bless him! Oh yes! I'm looking forward to visiting Breakspear - I was a massive fan of Brian Connelly - had his poster on my bedroom wall when I was a teenager! I adore all the names you've mentioned! Such greats of film and TV xxxx Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching - it's very appreciated! xxxxx
Thanks for posting.
My pleasure! Thank you for watching xxxx
A charmer on and off the screen, wonder how his career would have ended up if he had opted to pursue the Hollywood route? Just to have be in a film with the legendary Gene Kelly I guess was enough!
Sad to hear about the many tragedies in his later life.
Thanks for an insight into another great character - ding dong indeed! 😊
Absolutely! He was indeed a charmer, and the thought of him in Hollywood is intriguing. The opportunity to work with the legendary Gene Kelly must have been a dream come true. It's bittersweet considering the later tragedies, but I'm glad you enjoyed the insight. "Ding dong" indeed! 🌟😊🎬 xxxxx Thank you for your lovely comment and for watching the video - it's always appreciated! xxxxx
I've learned a lot about this chap ,thankyou young lady .🥰
You’re so welcome!!!!! Thank you for your kind comment and for watching xxxx
Brilliant story superbly told xx🍀🍀🍀
Thank you so much! ♥♥♥
Just ordered his book, I loved this man as a youngster, I am 61 now.
Oh you will love it! It’s very candid! I thoroughly enjoyed it xxxxx
That was absolutely brilliant to watch.
I've read his autobiography and, as you say, it's excellent.
Also, how kind to also lay flowers on his parents grave. Very touching.
Have a great weekend.
I’m so glad you enjoyed it - thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching! What a wonderful autobiography - it kept me totally engaged from beginning to end! ❤
It was a pleasure to leave flowers for his parents - he was such an amazing entertainer who brought so much happiness with his performances! ❤❤❤
I've not seen your chanel for some time, and I've missed not watching as your videos are lovely. This video is no exception, and I'm happy to say I saw Leslie Phillips at the Bridgewater hall in Manchester, when he compared a musical evening, it was really good, he constantly made jokes about the conductor! My Mum had given me his biography, as featured in this fine presentation, which I handed in, and hoped he would sign. This he kindly did, and wrote "Hallo, and ding doing!" it made my day. My Mum asked to read his book after me, but I wouldn't let her, it was far too racey!!!
Ohhhh 😂 yes! His book is definitely racey! I have to admit there were more than a few jaw dropping and laugh out loud reading moments! I would so love to have met him and for him to sign my book! That's so awesome - thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching - it's very appreciated xxxx
That was a kind and affectionate tribute Shar, thank you and well done. I didn't know anything about his humble origins and that voice training certainly made him sound like no one else from Chingford I've ever known. The missed funeral thing seemed totally out of character and clearly he later regretted it very much. But he didn't deserve the tragedies that befell him later on and made a positive impact throughout his life, ensuring he was much loved in every sense.
Thank you so much Michael - I literally grew up loving Leslie and thoroughly enjoying his screen presence - and as a frequent visitor to Chingford, I have to admit I don't know anyone who sounds quite like he did lol I think as far as the funeral was concerned - we all make mistakes and sometimes they are big ones - I don't know if you know, but Diana Dors didn't go to her fathers funeral and she said she always regretted it - she was in America when he died xxxx
An interesting video.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video - thank you for watching! xxxx
I loved Philips part in the Navy Lark. "Left hand down a bit". CRASH! CRUNSH! SCRAPE!
♥😅
Following on from Leslie I have just been watching Going Straight with Ronnie Barker on RUclips. Ronnie must be our cleverest & most loved actor . Hint any chance of a bio in the near future. Much Love Robert from Manchester
Ronnie Barker - without a doubt!!! More than a chance! lol another childhood and growing up favourite for me - and such an interesting life too - and of course a Diana Dors connection - so you know that will happen! lol xxxxx
I remembered the film i told you i watched where Leslie was a detective. It was called The Limping Man and was made in 1953. It was a brilliant film, and I would recommend it to anyone.
I've still not seen it yet xxxx
Its on RUclips ❤@@BeautifulBadandBizarre

I loved Leslie Phillips. He was a great actor. His private life had a lot of sadness in it though. ❤
Same here!!! He was immensely talented and such great fun xx I agree, he had a very sad and at times tragic private life - heartbreaking xxxx thank you for watching the video xxxx
