You said that he should go to the doctor, but in 1935 there wasn't a heck of a lot the doctor could do. They didn't have the plethora of antibiotics they do now. They mention Sulfa in the movie but it just became available in 1935 and had lots of side effects (they mention vomiting). Some reactors mention cranberry juice, but good luck getting that in Louisiana in the middle of the great depression.
Very prudent, very observant comment. “Time,” “culture,” and “context” is supremely important to understand a story. Well said.
Agreed. Many watcher (reactors) forget or overlook the fact that this was set in 1935, the heart of the Great Depression. The drugs we have now, to treat such things, either had not been discovered/invented yet or else were not widely available.
@@chrisdoyle5450 The book is actually set in 1932 so Sulfa wasn't even an option in the book
@@DaleKingProfile Thanks for the info. Haven't read the book, just going by the older Paul's references. Makes even more sense, that medicines, anti-biotics not being available yet. 🙂
@@DaleKingProfile Hmm. Paul does mention taking sulfa in the book. He says the options were, “Sulfa and stink or suffer and wait.” I forgive King for getting that wrong, though, because the story is just magnificent.
Bruce Willis recommended Michael Clarke Duncan(John Coffey) for this movie after working with him in "Armageddon." Mr. Duncan is also memorable in "Armageddon," "Daredevil," "The Island," "The Whole Nine Yards," and others.
Mr.Duncan was an absolutely Amazing actor!!! Rip...😔❤️
he crushed in sin city
And Scorpion King
Why call him MR Duncan but Bruce Willis you just call Bruce Willis??? Why not MR Willis???
@@dimitrakapa4887 Are you old fashioned or something that you call people "Mr."?
Reactors who see Green Mile for the first time are always advised to see "The Shawshank Redemption" soon after, and vise-versa. Both are Stephen King stories and made into excellent movies directed by Frank Darabont. You will definitely enjoy Shawshank too. You may cry, but in a different way.
And for a good, different kind of Tom Hanks movie, based on space history, do "Apollo 13" (1995). ✌😎
I definitely recommend The Shawshank Redemption.
Another Darabont film based off of a work of King is The Mist.
When Darbont and King work together the result is always amazing.
People who see*
Everyone "are reactors", it's a natural thing.
@@OriginalPuro I see.
Another really good Tom Hanks movie is Splash. Must be one of his first movies. Daryl Hannah is brilliant too in it, as Madison the mermaid.
Another Tom Hanks recommended movie, with Tom in a different type of role: "The Road to Perdition."
looked up online, it said average life for a mouse is 3yrs. If he passed at the end scene (maybe). 60 would be 20times longer than average. A person in reasonable health could live to 80 -100. So 20x that means he has a LONG time to remember what happened on the green mile. A very emotional movie, and they all did such a great acting. Without fail, everybody hates Percy almost immediately by then end no one feels sorry for him.
A couple things to consider about how long Paul has left to live:
1) How old was Mr. Jingles when he received the gift from John? Paul being in his 40s during the Depression, he would've probably been 50% of the way through his natural life. If Mr. Jingles was 6 months at the time, then John turned the remaining 83% of his life into 60 years. That's a 2400% increase to the natural life span. If Mr. Jingles was 2.5 years old, then he turned the remaining 17% of his life into 60 years. That's a 12000% increase over natural. Depending on how old Mr. Jingles was that percentage increase would then be applied to the remaining natural life that Paul had (assuming it worked that way).
2) Did Mr. Jingles and Paul get the same dose? There's no way of telling, but my gut tells me that Mr. Jingles received a bigger dose of magic than Paul. His was an uncontrolled transfer of the magic while John was trying to help lessen the pain on Del. Paul's dose was a controlled sharing of the magic to help give him insight on what Wild Bill had done. I feel like the uncontrolled transfer would have been more substantial, but that's just my opinion.
3) Would the same dose of magic have the same effect on Paul as it would a much smaller creature? Much like medicine, a dose that could cure an ailment in a mouse would likely not even be noticeable if given to a grown man. So, did the magic have a greater effect on Mr. Jingles because it was given to such a small animal?
Those are just some things I think about when I wonder how long Paul has left. There's no telling how the magic actually works, so there's no way of answering the questions. I think I just hate the idea of Paul still wondering around at 900 years old waiting for his turn to die and like to think he won't have to wait that long.
@@gimmethunder Sure, Mr. Jingles got a jolt of energy during Del's execution. But you forgot to mention, John actually brought that mouse back to life after Percy squished him with his foot. That's gotta be more than just a jolt.
One thing not mentioned in the film is how long did Melinda live thanks to John? Maybe Paul should look for her and they can spend their remaining years/centuries together.
@@cydrych nah it doesn't work that way. He only removed her illness. He actually (and he states it when he does it) that he is giving a part of his power to Paul so that he can see what Wild Bill had done. That's the difference. The actual transfer of power from John to Paul.
@@musicandmoviefan9217 he transferred it to the mouse too so it stands to reason that he would have transferred it to Melinda as well.
As someone who had a pet mouse, and has had many pet rats over the years, Mr. Jingles gets me every time.
I love Scottish people. The eb and flow of the voice is beautiful
James Cromwell, the warden
If you want to see him in a really REALLY feel good movie, check him out as Farmer Hoggit in " Babe ".
"That'll do"
So THAT'S where I'd seen him before. Thanks. Paired with the supremely talented Aussie plumper Magda Szubanski.
LA Confidential as well
Babe was laughed at when it came out and it's one of the best movies ever
@@trumphatesyou I laughed at it too, because it was funny - and original.
All the times I've seen the movie, all the reactions I've watched and I am _just_ now realizing that Del's death was exactly the same as the crime he committed. The fire he set to cover up his crime of rape and murder of a young girl ended up setting an apartment on fire and killing people including two children. Full circle. Damn!
Paul actually talks about it in the book. How the witnesses would tell their friends it was divine justice. “Del there burnt a bunch of people alive and we turn around and burn him alive.”
BUT he is also very clear that it was the foulest thing in his life, “not just my working life, but my whole life.” Mostly because Percy didn’t do it for justice, but “because Percy had wet his pants and the little Frenchman had had the temerity to laugh at him.”
The desire for atonement for how monstrous the execution was is a big motivating factor in why Paul pushes to save Melly.
Have you seen "The Shawshank Redemption" yet? Or even Forest Gump. You'll love those too.
“Depends what they did”. In the book, the Chief was the least guilty of the prisoners (aside from Coffey of course). He killed a guy in a drunken fight. Usually that’s manslaughter or 2nd degree murder. IMO he probably got a more severe conviction and sentence because of his skin. Delacroix’ crime was worse.
What did Delacroix do??
@@deegribble4160 Going from memory here, but IIRC he raped and killed a girl, then burned her body to hide the evidence, and in the process killed some other people.
What did Delacroix do??
@@deegribble4160 from what I remember, he killed a woman and set her room on fire but the fire spread and killed a few more people in the process.
@@markdohrmann5983 raping and killing a young girl, then trying to cover up his crime by burning her body. The fire was near an apartment building that caught on fire and killed six more people, including two children*
Eminem is in 8 Mile. In southeast Michigan, there are a several east-west roads that are a mile apart, that are just named 5 Mile, 6 Mile, 7 Mile, etc. 8 Mile is significant among them because it goes all the way across the state uninterrupted, although it’s sometimes called Baseline Road in that stretch. But for that movie, it’s significant because it is the border for the city of Detroit and Warren, where he lived.
It wasn't just an incredible movie it also had a very amazing cast. Even in small roles had actors like Michael Jeter, Graham Greene, Gary Sinise, Barry Pepper or Harry Dean Stanton. Also, Doug Hutchison did a really good job as Percy Wetmore. Whenever I see him Season 1 of the X-files comes to mind, where he played Eugene Tooms.
Graham Greene cracked me up in Thunderheart.
Cromwell was great as that police chief in LA Confidential and also was an early role for Russell Crowe.
"We each owe a death; there are no exceptions." Such a beautiful film.
Or disturbing and horrible from start to finish.
I wish death and suffering didn't exist
I just wanted to say this. I just found your channel and I didn’t realize before this video started that you were Scottish. The love of my life was Scottish. She was from Aberdeen. I lost her to cancer a little more than three years ago. When I heard your accent it just made my mind go immediately to her and that was a nice feeling. I just felt I would mention that. I gave you a follow and I’m enjoying the reaction.
18:50 "Like an angel" exactly right darling Dawn. Wonderful work. Still remember your make up for those Halloween reactions. that was fun x
Moonpie is like a Wagon Wheel
Once again, Ms. Dawn, an absolute pleasure to watch this movie with you. I love your reactions! Thanks for sharing. :)
She's a lassie who is quite sassy
It was my first time to see a non-Python reaction of yours. Well done ma'am. You anticipated plot developments well, but it still managed to surprise you, the hallmark of a great yarn. Kudos to all involved in this but especially Stephen King and Frank Daraborn, and RIP John Michael. What a performance! Not sure but I think mice live only 3-5years. I was waiting for 'wee moosie' but it never came.
Sorry I meant Michael Clarke Duncan
Watch her Team America one it’s hilarious
Also meant Frank Darabont. Jeez, dementia or what? Btw Dawnie, the size of a lemon would depend on the size of the lemon!
You held up better than most, usually people watch this and they are crying a lot so good job. And you are right most of Hank's movies are criers like Saving Private Ryan, Forest Gump, and Cast Away.
There's always "Splash".
8 mile Is the name of the Eminem movie, LoL. I've seen the Green Mile at least 10 times now and I still tear up everytime I watch it. Wonder, wonder movie
They practice the process to make sure that the execution doesn’t go wrong in front of witnesses and so they maintain the respect that this harsh act needs. Note how Paul takes umbrage to Toot-Toot acting a fool and all the guards laughing at his antics during rehearsal. Even after Arlen Bitterbuck’s execution, Brutal takes issue with Percy talking smack and actually hitting the corpse. “He’s square with the house again.”
Mr. Jingles lived roughly 30 times longer than the average lifespan of a mouse, and he was still going.
If Paul could expect the same lifespan extension, or even more because he got more of John's power, that's a truly terrifying thought.
The estimates range from 600 years to nearly 2000, Paul will have a long time to think about all the ways he could have saved John Coffey.
I've always thought that Mr. Jangles was brought back from the dead which took a lot of power, whereas Paul was just cured of a U.I which I assume would take far less, so whilst he would live longer than normal it wouldn't be to the same extent as the mouse.
But what about the Warden's wife? She was cured of a huge brain tumour which again took a lot more power the Paul's cure so she would presumably live even longer than Paul.
@@speleokeir You forgot, JC had to share part of himself with Paul to show him what wild bill had done.
@@VadulTharys Good point. I still wonder about the warden's wife though.
@@speleokeir those he heals do not get "infected" with life. The mouse did because during Dale's execution Coffey was holding him and was in so much pain he could not control sharing with the mouse.
More than anything, this movie shows how wide a range Sam Rockwell has.
Check out "Braveheart". It is about a Scottish warrior named William Wallace.
Michael Clarke-Duncan was already 6'5 in reality, but he still had a platform when filming standing scenes
Thank you for bringing Scottish representation to the reaction game. You know as well as I there are a hundred Irish reactors for every Scot.
Are there? I've only come across one posh Irish girl.
The best description I’ve ever heard of Percy Wetmore; he’s the sort of person that Hannibal Lecter preferred to eat.
First, yeah you're back 😋 Always love your reactions, and your accent 🤪2nd, oh no. Not the Green Mile for the first time. Here come the tears 😪
Philidelphia is a movie with Tom Hanks that will make you cry. Award winning film. He won the Oscar for best actor.
Executions didn't happen on a daily basis, and it's my guess that's why there were rehearsals like in the movie.
You know a movie is good when you have biscuits left over because you were so entertained by the film that you forgot to snack! 🤔😂
I consider myself very good at picking out accents, and I knew two seconds after I first heard you that you were Scottish. That accent really does it for me.
This accent is easily one of the best parts about being a tuber
LOVED this reaction!
And a mouse lives 3 to 4 years.
When John Coffey was breathing out the "moths", that was the sickness, the death.
'My Cousin Vinny' is pretty damn funny, since you asked... :D
Scottish girls are God’s gift to humanity.
Can't say I've ever heard anyone describe this film as "feel good" 😮
Guards were to keep a certain amount of distance from the cells to prevent such incidents as seen several times in the movie. But Percy, being the kind of person that he was, simply chose to ignore that piece of advice. It definitely cost him in the end.
Exactly, which was why Delacroix was warning Paul not to get close to John, in the scene he healed his infection.
As an aside, am I a bad person, because when Percy shot Bill, my first thought was "Well...That fixes everything"?
He was on a platform, which is how they make him appear so big.
GREAT Post, Dawn Marie. Thank you for watching this movie. No, let me rephrase that. Thank you for SHARING this movie with us. This way, You, Me, and Every viewer on your page sees it. This is one of my FAVORITE movies. And I am not sure if you knoiw this, but the Book Author, Stephen King wrote the book that this movie is based on. YES, King is a Horror book genius, but he also has other talents also. Horror is only 1 of his tricks. He also wrote the Novella, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, which is what the movie, The Shawshank Redemption is based on. And the Director of that movie, Frank Darabont. He directed The Green mile, also. The two did team together for a third movie, The Mist, but that book and movie are totally different than the 1st 2. Ok, sorry. I'm rambling on. Might I suggest, if you haven't already done so, think about watching The Shawshank Redemption. Another, GREAT prison movie. Great Post.
Stephen King has written some of the best novels ever but the thing about his writing is not based on horror (that's secondary) It is based on people!
The Scottish and Irish accents are two of the most beautiful sounds the human voice can make.
Only great writing can make us care so much about a mouse. I recommend The Sting. It’s has old time gangsters and it’s a really fun caper flick. Winner of 7 Academy Awards. My “Best movie ever”
i absolutely died when you said what did he suck it out of his unit his unit infecion LMAO that was hilarious
Happy movie, with Tom Hanks: Joe Versus The Volcano (1990). Some call it a romantic comedy, I call it a feeling adventure.
The first of his three movies with Meg Ryan.
Another happy Hanks movie is "Terminal". It is rarely reacted to, but every bit as good as the rest of his work.
Please keep doing what you are doing, as you are a joy to watch. You have a special charm that is rare, and prescious. Good luck.
As an Irish person who goes over to see celtic every month, you could not be more Scottish if you tried lol
Were you one of the Septic fans who had to be written to and reminded to wash before coming to Porkheid?
Hanks's later career is astonishing to those of us who grew up watching Bosom Buddies
I know, I never would have thought!
wasn't bachelor party his first movie?
@@dannyjoe3343 no. He had a small part in a horror movie first, but his second movie (and first starring role) was Splash. Bachelor Party came after that
@@vincegamer Do you remember one with John Candy? I might be mistaken but they were security guards I think.
@@vincegamer "Joe Vs. The Volcano" was a flop at the box office, don't remember at what point his career it was made, fairly early though.
I retired from Dept. of Corrections after 25 yrs.. Think this movie is the only one I've seen that portrays the Correctional Officers as good guys...
Michael Clarke Duncan went to Scotland with Craig Ferguson, it was delightful (that's the gentleman that played John koffee)
Love This Film I Can Honestly Say Every time I Watch This It's Quick Grab the Tissues. R.I.P Michael Clarke Duncan.
It is sooo much fun to watch movies with you hun!!! Keep them coming. I am here for it!!! 🤩
I love how you want people dead if they hurt children or animals. I agree...
Good to see and hear you again. I knew that there would be tears. Every time I see it I get teary. Love your accent and your reactions. Stephen King said it's not a coincident that John Coffey's initials are the same as another famous healer in history, JC.
Oh. ...there will be tears.... I'll get me popcorn lol
Dawn Marie
Michael Clarke Duncan aka John Coffey was like his character, a gentle giant according to his family and friends. Big Mike worked in his previous career in security as a bodyguard for "celebs". He worked on different assignments while doing some commercials. Big Mike changed his career path after the death of Biggie Smalls aka Notorious BIG in a drive-by shooting. Big Mike went into acting fulltime. His big break came in 1998 when he was in Armageddon with Bruce Willis. Producers and casting were looking for an actor to portray John Coffey for the Green Mile movie. Bruce heard of this movie developing, so he made a suggestion of Michael Clarke Duncan for the role of John Coffey. Big Mike gotten the role thanks to Bruce Willis. He and Bruce worked on another movie called The Whole Nine Yards with Mattew Perry of Friends Fame.
Sadly, Big Mike died suddenly. During his private funeral service with family and friends, Tom Hanks eulogized Big Mike.
Same writers directors producers and many actors also in Shawshank! Love ur accent! I do a Scott accent, Phat Basterd does Scottish, same guy plays the dad in, So I Married an Axe Murderer! Also an old acquaintance of mine bought my dog Fenster...she was a Scott!
I see what You mean about getting confused with the movie 8 Mile and The Green Mile, because I had that slight confusion back then when I was younger also! 😅
8 Mile is a good movie though, but, of course, The Green Mile is literally My heart in My body!
You can tell right off the bat that this movie has nostalgic potential that looks like a force to be reckoned with!
I miss when entertainment was like that, so fresh and new!!!!
I suppose these things age like fine wine I guess! 😅😊
If you do the math and extrapolate to guess how long Paul will live, Mr. Jingles is 64 years old at the end of the movie, which is about 32 times longer than mice typically live, so that means that Paul should live well beyond the year 4000!
Yup, a truly terrifying idea. What makes it even worse is Mr. Jingles is still going. What if he lives another 60 years or more? And he only got a little of John's gift when it accidentally spilled into him.
How much more of the power did Paul get?
@@JakkFrost1 Exactly. Unless he gets hit by a bus!
A mouse lives around 2-5 years in captivity, less in unforgiving nature. A 65 y-o mouse is the Gollum of mice.
In the book, Percy has no recollection of what he did,he died professing his innocence.
Scottish, Irish, English, American, Swedish.. As I always say we all moan the say! ;-) "He's square with the house.. He's paid what he owed! So keep your goddamned hands off of him!" I love that so much!
A mouse, if lucky, will live for about 2 years. So, Mr. Jingles has lived a bit over 30 times as long as he should've.
Tom Hank's character was already middle-aged when his life got extended. So, if it works in the same proportion as Mr. Jingles, he'd live until around 1,500 years old.
An absolute nightmare of a scenario...
Just ran across your YT. Visited & dated a Scottish lady 12 years ago. Roseanne, awww, heart still swims thinking of that lovely lady and loved visiting your lovely land. Thanks much!! listening to you brought back some really good memories to this old man.
I love your channel. Keep up the good work Dawn. 🙂
Tom Banks is about 6', if I remember correctly. Michael Clarke Duncan (RIP) was 6'4 I think. The filming makes him appear far taller, though he was indeed a very big and bulky guy. Friendly giant in real life, too.
Love your reaction x
I want to see her reaction to "Brave Heart".
Damn you're cold as hell, you don't cry at all, that's impressive.
I stumbled across your channel while searching for reaction channels. Saw the reaction to Green Mile and as soon as I heard your accent, I had to subscribe.
Love the Scottish accent.
Sounds like Jutland speak to me 😛
A west Jute sayeth: You're welcome.
James Cromwell(the warden) played a very different role in "L.A. Confidential." He was also memorable in "Star Trek: First Contact."
He was also in the TV show 6 Feet Under
Also Zefram Cochrane in ST First Contact 😁😁
He was also in "Babe".
at the end when the mouse died Paul died. Got to love Steven King. Forrest Gump with Tom Hanks is a classic.
The Scottish accent is the best of all the English speaking accents
I'm so glad that you finally watched this movie. Although it definitely brings out the tears, it's definitely worth watching.
I don't know about Scotland, but in England they used to have public hangings and it was a day's entertainment. People would pack a lunch and bring the whole family to watch.
The average life for a mouse is 2 1/2 to 3 years. Mr. Jingles is over 60 years old!
So yes, If he can make a mouse live that long, how much longer does Paul have???
Still cry watching this movie. Amazing Stephen King writes such great stories besides horror.
ALL HAIL THE MOTHERLAND OF SCOTLAND! And glad to see you reacting to this film!
I Love her reactions, she should be on every day
Great reaction to one of my favourite movies. Keep it up! Love from Sweden.
This reaction came up on my RUclips feed and I subscribed immediately.
Assuming a mouse's natural lifespan is 2-3 years, Paul could live to be over 2000.
This reaction is awesome, I cried because that scene when John dies and everyone cries, it just touched me a lot. Thank you for this reaction, I hope you only the best in your life.
The saddest part is watching Dawn try to do math at the end. ;)
Beautiful accent Lassie! I am proud Scot heritage (MacLaren-Perthshire), proud of my Southern heritage as well. Beautiful reaction, thanks.
Shortbread with chocolate chips sounds marvelous.
8 Mile is Eminem's film it's the name of the road he grew up on
You have forgotten the tissues, Eminem 8mile. Great Reaction, Lass 🏴🇳🇿💖💯...
There are many other worthwhile Tom Hanks movies. "Splash" and "Big" are two fantasy movies with a lighter tone than this. "Joe Versus The Volcano," "Sleepless In Seattle," and "You've Got Mail" are three that costar Meg Ryan.
Let's be fair. "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've got Mail" are basically the same freaking movie.
"We each owe a death."
We do, indeed...
Definately Spaceballs!
I just discovered your channel. I freaking love your accent. I subscribed. I look forward to more of your videos.
It's funny, I have full Irish heritage and love it so I can pick out the different accents of Irish, British and Scottish.
I only discovered your channel yesterday. The Green Mile is my favourite movie
Such a fantastic cast here. Just fantastic.
Wee timorous cowering beastie... Even Mr Jingles gives a tremendous performance in this.
You are smart enough for me. We love you just as you are, and wouldn't change a thing, DM.
We all cry at this one.
Hi, Dawn :)
Yes, this is an excellent film. It's an even better book, because there are a lot of details left out of the film. If they had left everything in, the movie would be 12 hours long.
I've started the Audible book, and I love it.
Thank you for this reaction. I'm looking forward to watching more of them :)
It’s my absolute favorite audiobook. Frank Muller knocks it out of the park.
Steven King and Frank Darabont, the Director have used several of the same actors/Actresses in his Movies
The Shawshank redemption
Green Mile
The Mist.
The reason there are people there for the executions is that a certain number of witnesses are required by law and the victim's family have the right to also witness. The reason he doesn't want any laughing is the fact that, no matter what the crime, they are ending another person's life. It should be done with a certain degree of decorum.
Thanks, very good reaction.
One of the greatest movies ever made
