Agreed and for the record, I spent 6 years trying to buy the same 68 Charger. Six years before my friend could let go of it AND IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT. Lol
I was one of the "dummies" when I bought my 68. This was years ago and I had been looking for a long time and actually had 2 sellers back out on me. Finally found a complete "barn stored" Charger and just pulled the trigger and picked it up almost sight unseen. Turns out there was A LOT more wrong with it that I thought (RUST!). Got lucky with a lot of the body and solid frame rails but long story short, I'm still working on it years later. I should be driving the damn thing already... I will get her finished in no small part due to these videos. Unbelievably helpful!!! Thank you for all you do on here.
Couldn’t of said it any better, I’ve been messing with Mopar’s for forty plus years. Guys and Gals that know these sixty’s and seventies Mopar’s know where to look and what to look for. When folks ask me about any old car and they’re not able to do the work for themselves I always tell them don’t buy a cheap pos, save your money and get a nice looking, reliable car that you want you’ll save a ton of money. I tell them to take a buddy who’s knowledgeable about those cars and someone to be the voice of reason. Great video Chris, viewers take his advice.
great videos - i remember the good old days - a long time ago the day after my sixteenth birthday I bought a four year old 1969 charger for a thousand dollars. I saved the money working fast food and a paper route. You would not believe how much that car affected the rest of my life. thanks for bringing back great memories.
It's always good to hear this kind of info from you, cause I know it's unbiased and true. I have wanted a Charger for as long as I can remember. I mean the Dukes of Hazzard started airing when I was four years old. That cemented these cars in my mind forever, that and girls with great legs! I agree with you about the numbers matching hype. Granted, there are some real gems that deserve to be original and done right. But for me? I'll take a base 318 charger that I can build the way I want and have fun driving it.
Good advice, I did buy a 70 charger burnt orange on burnt orange from my dads neighbor a couple years ago . My dad kept asking me to come check it out I was pretty busy so he sent me a couple pictures and I saw that it was a RT so of course I found some time to go check it out. The neighbor had it in his barn since 86 and we had never seen or heard about it he new my dad was a mopar guy because he drove a 59 coronet and offered him the car.
Hi Scott I too had a 1970 Dodge Charger in 1979. It was burnt orange with burnt orange interior, bucket seats console and a white vinyl top that was dyed or stained a tan color., NOT AN RT though, it had a 383 Magnum 2bbl. carb. I loved it,very nice 1st car for 400$.🥰✌👌🤠🧔🚗🚦♥️🕶🎶☮🆒️🟠🏁🇺🇲🧰🏆🥀
Most of the complainers are the one's who are stuck in the 80's and can't accept prices are no longer 80's prices. We all love a deal, but reality is a real smack down for many. I tell these people go find and buy are gem Sedan from the 60's or early 70's and have the same fun in a cool car for a fraction of the cost. And the old saying holds true: "You can't build it for what you can buy it for".
In the 80s you could buy hemi Cudas for that price maybe cheaper but those days are long gone, my buddy bought a 72 Z28 for $2500 in 1988 and my neighbor sold beautiful muscle cars out of his yard for around $2500.
kevin leigh the old adage of "its worth what someone is willing to pay" is extremely accurate with the old car game. Problem is people that have never owned one just wants one because everyone else does and it drives the prices to insane levels. More money than intelligence out there.
@@ConcussedGaming Not for 5K. Not in anyone's dream world. Either pay 30K plus for a decent project and give it a thorough going-over, or choose from a bunch of less popular Mopar models that can still be had for decent money...there are lots of 300's, Polaras, Windsors, Monacos, Fury's, even 3rd and 4th-gen Chargers out there that would be more easily attainable projects.
There was so much useful information in this video. Thank you for sharing these lessons that cost you thousands of dollars to learn. You shared the cost of so many of the vital components but no one ever speaks of cost/value of varying condition from complete car to rotten hunk of rust. I know things are only worth what someone will pay for them. And I’m aware that a complete running driving car can be worth less than a mangled heap solely on the options on the vin plate. I just think it would be helpful to have a clue how much a decent 2nd gen charger should cost
Hey Chris there are a lot of people out here that want you to stop educating everybody on how these people are ripping you off. You are educating everybody on how not to get ripped off and it’s killing them😂😂. Keep up the good work..!
Another GREAT video!! Appreciate all the GREAT advice. I got drunk on Ebay and purchased a project 70 Charger for a good price but I was expecting to buy a lot of sheet metal panels, especially the back quarters and trunk because 90% of project Chargers need that anyway... and yes the interiors are stupidly expensive too!!! But these are 50 year old cars... I just resent the higher price for MOPAR parts compared to GM & Ford...
NEVER OCCURED TO ME BUT I PURCHASED MY CHARGER IN 2003.$2 GRAND. IT WAS GOOD AMOUNT OF CASH FOR ME BUT SOMETHING AFFORD. I MUST HAVE BOUGHT RIGHT BEFORE PRICES GOT CRAZY HIGH. I STILL FEEL PRETTY LUCKY
G MAN im 15 i’ve wanted a charger since I was 5. I wanna learn how to rebuild them and fix them. The quality in old cars is so much better than today’s standards.
My dad builds /rebuilds them from 68 to 70 chargers and roadrunners hes bought a few from vanguard motor sales im a mopor head and i own his 68 426 hemi charger black on black and hes got few chevys for sell
Agree 100% bought my 69 Roadrunner in pieces- complete. Blasted, on a body jig, title, vin, data plate, drive train, axle, trans, k-frame x2, old crager ss wheels, orig N96 parts, etc etc. And got a great deal to boot.
TOO bad like hearing the prices , I know there expensive because I looked at Chargers for years. Finally got a very nice Charger for a decent price. The triple black you bought was priced right. Where are you going to find an original triple black R/T for that money, not on the east coast for sure.
One I'm looking at has a Dana 60 . It's bronze /Copper colored. 383 (seized) with factory ac and disc brakes. Comes with extra interior dash parts all glass has been smashed out of it but has 2 rear windows inside has 68 rt parts in it. But it needs a new ass but rails are solid grills perfect and all ac stuff is there.
Most people can't see the potential in a car that needs some work! I prefer a car that doesn't have a motor and trrans in it, that way I can put what I want!
If you're just starting out in Mopar look for the off the beaten path cars..One example was a 1973 Town and Country wagon. It was running, solid, inspected, and ready to drive. It had a smog era 440 with a 727 and an 8 3/4 rear. A decent rebuild can pump that 440 to 400hp and 500lb/ft of torque. Even at 5000 pounds that's still respectable for a cruiser. I think it was $4000. Everybody has seen a Charger but when was the last time you saw a Town and Country wagon? Forget taking a kid to a car show. You can take the whole school to the car show.
Your message really speaks to me! My absolute dream car is a 1969 charger! When i decided to look at the market for one they were just way out of my price range. And I was looking to restore one, im no stranger to hard work! But even a rusted out roller just a shell was over 10k and that a base model, nothing special! What makes these cars so expensive a amature enthusiast like me cant even afford one? But i was able to aquire a 1970 dodge Coronet that hopefully will someday be on the road. But hopefully a charger will cross my path! Good message! Like seeing your cars and what you do to them!🤘
I understand what you're saying completely if it's already been torn down all the rusty stuff taken off then the rest is or soda blasted and epoxy saved you a lot of work I bought a 1968 Camaro here and Tampa Florida I looked under it before I bought it look good from what I could see and I didn't know exactly where to look for rust in other crusty places so I drove it for a little while and I kept seeing more more rust so I took the carpet out lo and behold street signs so someone put street signs in the floor and got up under it and dressed up with a little Bondo put the carpet and padding in good to go so now I'm doing a whole lot more work and a little less driving .
We were visiting the Petersen Museum earlier this year, and a quote from Mr P stood out to me. He said, ‘always pay more for the right car.’ He went on to say that the right car will be more enjoyable to own in the long run.
My dad has been saying the same things you mentioned in this video since i was about 8 haha! It's a cavalcade of truths, and more people needs to hear it.
I might have been a dummy when I bought my '70. It has the majority of the things he says to make sure the car comes with. But. There's holes in the frame rails. Big ones too. So I'll be having all of that fixed and done at a resto shop before too long here. But I'm not going to regret it. It might take some extra money other vehicles wouldn't, but I have a '70 Charger. And it's mine. And that makes me happy.
Listen to this man. He is in the money. I have a basket case 69 R/T S/E that I should have left where I found it. It has taken me years to locate all the pieces that were missing from the car.
Great advice. I bought a '74 Challenger a year ago last October. Although it did run and drive the Canadian pedigree prob should have set my spidey sense off. The guy sold it to me included trunk pan, floor pan, rear quarters, front fender, rockers, and a couple other miscellaneous items. I did the destruction portion of the rust removal but a smart thing I did was hire a couple guys to put the metal together. I don't do that kind of stuff and as much as RUclips guys make it look easy I am pretty damn certain I came out ahead on time, money, and fits of rage. I bought the car pretty well (I think) so as I approach the end I will wind up all in for around $20k including all new interior and paint.
I don't thinks it's so much as people "being a dummy", but more people that can't afford good cars that drastically underestimate their skill level and cost of missing/rusty/damaged parts and they buy the crap car they can afford, but this was a great video. Save up longer, keep looking, sell some crap you don't need and always buy the better car. You almost always save more in the end.
you need the FUEL cap. As for the wiring it's like 50 years old so ya might as well replace most of it anyways. I need to get a kit for my 71 satellite.
My dream charger is rust free with a strong reliable engine and a nice enough interior for daily driving. The paint doesn’t matter to me one bit. If it’s bad I can Matt black it and it looks fine
Valuable Information that will help in the purchase of any vehicle, Thank you for that. I do love these Chargers don't gimmie wrong, but i literally can not find one of these in my state, if they are up for sale it's instantly bought by a hoarder, and one you know well here in the state or Wyoming. Which Is why as a beginner to restoring a car I decided on an 81' G-Body Chevy and those are challenge enough. One day if I should find a Charger I would like to restore one. The insight and information you provided on many of the different parts, pieces, sections etc. also seem to similarly apply to the car I have just obtained. I watch this channel along with many others. Thanks for sharing.
I know you are super busy chris, but I hope you will post some restoration vids soon. You are an inspiration to so many, and you are so talented. I am not trying to blow smoke up your %#&, I just really want to see more panel replacement vids. I have learned a lot from you! Thanks in advance.
Thats what I like about having a 4th gen Dart. You don't get much street cred at car shows etc for having one, but parts are still easy to find and they won't break the bank.
God the hours and hours I've spent watching your videos. Better binge watch than anything on tv. Start at 10 PM and look down next thing you know its 6am haha
My dad builds /rebuilds them from 68 to 70 chargers and roadrunners hes bought a few from vanguard motor sales im a mopor head and i own his 68 426 hemi charger black on black and hes got few chevys for sell and now i am restoring and rebuilding old cars at 23 years old and i love it ill rebuild chevys fords and dodges/Plymouths for a good price
Always wanted a semi-decent or decent 71 or 72 roadrunner for around 40k or a little more or less. Seems they're up to 70k now, and the rest are rusted frames.
I appreciate that you took the time to explain all this stuff to us knuckle heads we can't help it some times but thanks for sharing it was a good video like always long live the all mighty chargers👍👍👍
I looked at one that's been redone at some point and it looked real sweet...except for the radiator support which had newer paint like the rest of the car, but it has obviously been mangled. The guy failed to mention it's been crashed before. I walked away from that. No prior accident cars for me.
It’s not always that simple tho Chris. I’d like to source a Charger lie this one, but as I’m Scottish and living in Scotland, it’s not so easy to find them online and definitely not by word of mouth.
Very good review on Chargers and Scammers! I "kind of understand" the Mopar fendertag-price-molding-grille-thing, those Cargers and Challengers are nice cars. But in the same time I DO NOT understand that Matching numbers-R/T-SE-Hemi-thing at all...
Another point: unless you're just buying the car for parts, you want to be sure that you will be able to get a new title in your name. Know the DMV regs for your state and the procedure for transferring titles, and what documents they will want to see. Many, many guys will try to sell cars without proper title, or no title at all, and spin some fairy tale that "DMV doesn't care", "I've never had a problem", even "I'm surprised you care about that." Being lied to is distressing, but you have to be prepared for it.
Lotsa great advice. Looking forward to the rental build, that's a great idea. Think I would stick with a small block for a rental if it were me. You'll want to rent it more than a couple times hah. Thanks for sharing
Nasty steering wheel for breaking fingers for those that steer too quick with fingers in the holes, they banned them here for that reason. Mine would heat up like a stove element in the heat. Love your videos Chris.
Just like your Cobras, Tigers, NSXs, Panteras, etc etc etc etc. I could have bought a rust free 1970 GTO 400 auto for 5 grand in 1993. Clean, straight, slick. All there. Could have bought a numbers matching '70 GS455 stage 1 for the same price about that time. Needed fenders and a carpet. Trans, dustributor, and carb were all stage 1, block was original to car. Five grand.
im one of the guys who bought a "cheap charger" and when i say cheap i mean complete but for 5K, this car is bad. its going to be between 5k and 10k in material alone to get it mostly restored, it would be more but me and a bunch of my buddies are going to be working on it to save on labor costs so im lucky in that i have a shop, a lift, and a welder i can use and thats gonna save me alot. if you dont have a place to wrench on a car and the tools neccisary expect to pay alot to get it right because you are going to be paying a shop to do alot of work for you and they aint cheap.
You are spot on,there are lots of scammers out there. My big thing is the title. So many buying cars and either there is no title or there is some shady business with the title. I've had people raise hell at me saying its not a problem getting them. I say save yourself some money and get one with a clean title. BTW I really enjoy the videos.

Don't worry, brother. She's gonna get there. Patience is the hardest part. But it's also the most important.
Last year Uncle Tony Garage he went and looked at a duster and it was a flipper hack job with a BS story . That flipper was speechless .
Yep. 3 different cars in one and fresh welds throughout.
Saw that vid. That car was a TERD!

I love the 68 chargers. And b body’s. As well as almost any muscle car
I need to keep an eye out on KSL. I’d love a nice 68 or 69 Charger or even a 70-74 Barracuda.
you need the FUEL cap.
You have the best advice Chris! I constantly refer you to other people and websites!
Outstanding video. Thanks for sharing.
The chain steering wheel is so you can drive in hand cuffs
I know you are super busy chris, but I hope you will post some restoration vids soon. You are an inspiration to so many, and you are so talented. I am not trying to blow smoke up your %#&, I just really want to see more panel replacement vids. I have learned a lot from you! Thanks in advance.
Holy moly, look who decided to finally post something?
Thats what I like about having a 4th gen Dart. You don't get much street cred at car shows etc for having one, but parts are still easy to find and they won't break the bank.
Man I learn so much from your videos . Thanks buddy buddy . I’m totally more wise about what to look for now .
Might be pulling the trigger on a '68 383 4bbl tomorrow. Not a fan of the blue paint it has, but it seems to be in great condition and fairly priced.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share this for us!
I looked at one that's been redone at some point and it looked real sweet...except for the radiator support which had newer paint like the rest of the car, but it has obviously been mangled. The guy failed to mention it's been crashed before. I walked away from that. No prior accident cars for me.
Some people don't learn lol but looking forward to seeing you build this 👍🏾👍🏾 yeah nothing is cheap to restore or replace, 😐
Thank you Chris I have bought a few that was basket cases and it worked out better for me
Better than a 10-200
Keep trying to get my cousin to sell me his 69 Road Runner convertible.. 383 4spd.. Sits in a garage covered with boxes of junk...
I bought my 1968 for 425 dollars and it was mint back in 1978 . Are they really worth the money?
It’s not always that simple tho Chris. I’d like to source a Charger lie this one, but as I’m Scottish and living in Scotland, it’s not so easy to find them online and definitely not by word of mouth.
Very good review on Chargers and Scammers!
I "kind of understand" the Mopar fendertag-price-molding-grille-thing, those Cargers and Challengers are nice cars. But in the same time I DO NOT understand that Matching numbers-R/T-SE-Hemi-thing at all...
Nooooo way that daytona build is going to be insane. Can't wait Chris. Thanks for the video buddy!
Like the yellow car though won't be finished
Dude your videos please me. I've learned so much about Chargers that I didn't know I needed to know and you have doggies in your vids!!
Chris, I will make a Vegas run just to rent your General Lee once you get’r done. Please post more vids as you are making the General Lee.
Once again good tips
The lesson is you should have bought your Mopars years ago
Just like your Cobras, Tigers, NSXs, Panteras, etc etc etc etc. I could have bought a rust free 1970 GTO 400 auto for 5 grand in 1993. Clean, straight, slick. All there. Could have bought a numbers matching '70 GS455 stage 1 for the same price about that time. Needed fenders and a carpet. Trans, dustributor, and carb were all stage 1, block was original to car. Five grand.
What is a basic price for a restorable 318 charger?
What I've always found! Repop sucks! The rubber lasts a few years and then looks terrible. Metal never fits!
Nice I Want It... LOL!! Keep us up to date on this reman...
im one of the guys who bought a "cheap charger" and when i say cheap i mean complete but for 5K, this car is bad. its going to be between 5k and 10k in material alone to get it mostly restored, it would be more but me and a bunch of my buddies are going to be working on it to save on labor costs so im lucky in that i have a shop, a lift, and a welder i can use and thats gonna save me alot. if you dont have a place to wrench on a car and the tools neccisary expect to pay alot to get it right because you are going to be paying a shop to do alot of work for you and they aint cheap.
I've been a car dummy. Thought I was getting a deal. Got a bucket...
I wish I had the magic you have...You are doing great! I am building a 1969 Dodge Charger on my channel Geek and Son.
Been working on a 68 keep up the videos they help
You are spot on,there are lots of scammers out there. My big thing is the title. So many buying cars and either there is no title or there is some shady business with the title. I've had people raise hell at me saying its not a problem getting them. I say save yourself some money and get one with a clean title. BTW I really enjoy the videos.
