Hi Gruff, I’ve never seen so many wasps at my apiary this season I have two traps up which are nearly full already, I must have a big nest near me I’ve even spent a whole afternoon in my bee yard squishing the damn buggers I must have killed at least 30 of them but there still around they fly in onto the bees landing board real quick wrestle a bee and before you no it the poor bee has had her abdomen cut off. Thanks for sharing your vlog with us Gruff mate.
Really useful information. Reducing entrance on national is hard because wood fillet is difficult to get out/turn. Full of enthusiasm and in a wonderful accent.
You can make a "wasp-out" yourself from a short length of electric cable ducting. I watched the video about it on Thornes' website then copied it myself. It's easy to make and works well.
Just a little help for people that uses the drink bottle yellow jackets trap if you will put a spoon full or two of apple sider vinegar in with the sugar syrup it will keep your bees out ALSO the blood pack that comes with the steak or chicken you get in the store works GREAT to get the yellow jackets in the trap just poke two little holes in the side of the bottle just above your sugar syrup an wire the blood pack to the inside of your bottle. Not on the funnel part put it in the bottom part .
I use underfloor entrances on all my hives and I've never lost a colony to wasps since I started using them. I have wasps near the hives all the time (September onwards) but they've never worked them out.
Those types of floors are really good. Glad to hear another positive comment regarding those floors. I think if the Asian hornet ever settles in the U.K. I think those floors would be a must!
Never had a problem before but this year I have lost several really good mated queens in mating hives. one week doing well, the next the hive was completely empty.
Lost all 3 hives to yellowjackets. They didnt want jam, raw meat or syrup, only honey. My hives were large and still absconded. The hives had 1.5 inch entry. I went out forvan hour each day to catch the YJ. I squished 40 in one hour every day.
At my house I see a few bees I save from my pool. They are sweet and don't hurt me, but there is wasp nests growing right now. It's the end of Feburary, it's a bit chilly. I see a hive with eggs. That must be the queens nest. If I leave a date out for the wasps with they leave my bees alone on the other side of my yard? I was holding a bee I saved from my pool and a wasp nose dived for it. I never held a bee before today. But I realized the wasp will kill the friends in my yard. Is there any way they can live in the same yard if I put out a sweet date under the nest? Lol. Theyll get ants too. 😅 im scared to bother the nest of wasps.
I appreciate your advice on placing fermented fruit in a wasp trap... in the hopes of discouraging BEES from entering the trap. So, this is my situation... I don't have Bees 🐝 I live in the States. In a residential community. I'm placing some wasp traps around my home today because they've had an aggressive presence here in just the last few days. 🐝 I LOVE BEES 🐝 So, I will 🐝 bee super sad if a 🐝 gets in my wasp trap.. Is there anything else you could suggest for me to use? Or any other suggestions you might have to make my traps less appealing to BEES 🐝? If only they could read... I'd post a little sign at the entrance of the trap that says: ••NO 🐝 BEES ALLOWED••
Quick question. Should I leave my super on over winter? It is a standard national poly hive with one brood box. The brood chamber is looking well, plenty stores, (by the looks, I'm new to beekeeping, but it looks to be fine). Plenty bees. The super itself has one full frame of honey, one half filled with honey, two a quarter filled with honey, and the rest are being drawn out. Any advice would be appreciated!
I always winter on single brood but it’s perfectly fine to winter on brood and a half. ( brood box and 1 super box) Take the queen excluder out and give them plenty of syrup so that the super box is full of stores ready for winter 😊
@@gwenyngruffydd Yes, brothers indeed. My father and grandfather were born there a lived their most of there lives--(big calves men--haha). I've loved NYC for along time yet covid has destroyed it. Its just now starting to come alive again after being a ghost town for nearly 1.5 years.
Very well explained video 👍
My biggest issue this year has definitely been the weather .... I've never known a summer to be so wet and morbid....
Worse summer I can remember
They have been a right pain this year! More than I’ve seen in the last 5 years. Nice video. 🐝
Thank you 😊. Yes agree worst I’ve seen them for a long time too.
So far very few seen around my hive in Aberdeen and the odd one or two are soon despatched or chased off

Hi Peter,
Sorry your bees are having a hard time 🙁
Hopefully it will get better, have you got entrance reducers in place?
Gwenyn Gruffydd yes got all the hives with their entrances reduced, next week going to put the mouse guards on.
Yes your right!! That’s the next threat to worry about!! 🐭

Never tried it but hearing great things about it after posting this video!
Nothing wrong with making kit yourself 😊🔨

I am now educated on the wasps diet.
Great little vid Gruff well done ,yes they are a pain !!
Thanks Colin 😊
Fascinating and informative video, so humans and wasps have something in common, we’re both addicted to sugar.
Thank you! Yes that’s true!! 😁😂🍫🍩🍯🍰🍬
Another great video as always first class keep it up 👍
Thank you William 😊
Oops i should have watched the whole video before commenting. Lol. Thank you. 😂
Great stuff as always. Good luck with your nucs !
Thank you Graeme 😊

Should say that's full hives, not nucs. That would be a different story

@@gwenyngruffydd absolutely right👍
Tried it dont work for me.the wasps just fly on in the hive

Top tips 👍
Thanks 😊
fascinating information
Glad you think so!

I’m watching this on 21st November and wasps are STILL a pain, I’ve never known a year like it.
I know!! It’s been to mild. Need some good frost to finish them off. And to get the bees to cluster down!!
Thanks
No problem 😊
Amazing video, television quality. Could you do a cattle update please
Hi thank you so much 😊
Yes I’ve got a cattle one in the pipeline coming in the next few weeks, and a few more after that 😊
I appreciate your advice on placing fermented fruit in a wasp trap... in the hopes of discouraging BEES from entering the trap.
So, this is my situation...
I don't have Bees 🐝
I live in the States.
In a residential community.
I'm placing some wasp traps around my home today because they've had an aggressive presence here in just the last few days.
🐝 I LOVE BEES 🐝
So, I will 🐝 bee super sad if a 🐝 gets in my wasp trap..
Is there anything else you could suggest for me to use?
Or any other suggestions you might have to make my traps less appealing to BEES 🐝?
If only they could read...
I'd post a little sign at the entrance of the trap that says:
••NO 🐝 BEES ALLOWED••
There are specific wasp lure liquid that you can use. Bees don’t touch it
What is the size is the entrance reducer? My hives have 3 openings that are 1/2" x 6" (called a long langstroth hive). Suggestions please?
Good question, I don’t have the measurements. Close it down and leave an inch if you haven’t got the original entrance block
Thornes wasp covers are expensive so made my own out of spare electrical plastic conduit.
Nothing wrong with fabrication parts yourself 😊
Last summer I had a time of it with the wasps, this year I'm on double brood and not spotted one wasp ; so far...
You’ll be ok if you haven’t seen them yet 😊
Very few this side of the hills this year too Pete.
What side of the hill is that?
Gwenyn Gruffydd he (Retep Cooper) is in Ceredigion, I am in Radnorshire!
Interesting that they have thrived in some areas and not others...

Is this a Welsh accent? Lovely
It sure is! 😄
Can you put a scream so bees can get in and out but not wasps or hornets
Not really but you can reduce the entrance size
Great video. love your accent! Irish right?
Thank you 😊 close!!! Welsh!! 😁🏴
@@gwenyngruffydd Aww, we are almost neighbors. I was born in Scotland but moved when I was two. Living in the Big Apple now.
