To me, one of the best things about baseball playoffs is how exclusive they are. Gives mediocre teams a reason to try and push for a spot. This new system just encourages mediocrity.
the problem with that is, the top teams in baseball tend to have the biggest payrolls. so, if you cant throw out blank checks at everyone, then youre not gonna make it in baseball, not long term anyway. besides, if the division winning cubs get beat by a second place marlins, what does that tell you?

I get that but it’s also u fair for a team like the Padres, who are probably the second best NL team but got the 4 seed. I like how the NBA does it where it’s all just seeds 1-8 for each conference, all that matters is record so it’s fair.
The only reason they're doing the format like this year is so they can make more money from the shortened season. I know they have talked about doing the format again next year, but that will never happen
I grew up with 4 teams in post season play. It was a different game back then, and it’s hard for me today to have the same connection with baseball as I did from the game I grew up with. Heck, I hated when they introduced the DH in the American League, but as a Mets fan, I thankfully was shielded from that for decades. The DH changed the game so much, and took away from the fun of strategy and decisions late in games with pitchers and pinch hitters. I want my 60s baseball back. It’s just for this season tho. Next year they’ll continue the 10 team format. I’m not a huge fan of it either, but it’s only for this season since there were only 60 games which means a lot of money was lost. Although I think the Giants should’ve made the postseason over the Cardinals since the Cardinals only played 58 games. I think the 10 team format is good imo. Idk why so many people wanna change it. If we're going to expand the postseason I think the bye would not really help the higher seeds really. Either keep it as it is, 16 teams, or just make it back to 10 teams.
I really like this idea, but I don’t think expanding the playoffs permanently is a good idea until we get at least another expansion team in each league
I like this idea for the Wild Card Series and I was thinking almost exactly the same thing. The only difference in what I was thinking is that instead of the first round being a single game, they could also be best of 3 with the first two being 7-inning doubleheaders on day 1 and if there’s a split, day 2 could be a 9-inning elimination game.
My Proposal: Straight Seeding-Get rid of divisions altogether when judging playoff capability. Instead of having the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd seeds be the division winners being ordered by wins, the first three seeds truly should be the three best teams in the league. The fourth and fifth seeds play in a WC series of three games with win determined home-field advantage. (If you win a game, you play the next game at your home stadium.) Divisions are to be used for travel purposes and for tiebreaker purposes only.
I don’t know, I’m very mixed on the format this year. I like that made all of the first round basically “must-see TV” but at the same time, it feels like too many teams. Ultimately, I could go 12 or 14. I think 14 is the right choice so that way we can give teams true incentive to win their division. In my “ideal” playoff format, all the division winners would get a bye from the first round. The wildcard teams could be from any of the divisions, so a 2nd place team isn’t guaranteed a spot. Like you suggested, I’d go single elimination for the first round of the wildcard, the two teams that win would face off in a best of 3 and then the rest of the way would be best of 7.
The issue with the 14 team format as you propose is that byes actually hurt teams.... Time off in baseball isn't the same as in football, basketball or hockey. Baseball players like routine and rhythm. Break their game sequence, and that could actually spell disaster, especially since it looks like they would be sitting for like 5 days, at minimum, before the DS starts.
The best format I have heard of by far is this. There would be 7 teams from each league that make the playoffs. The team with the best record in each league gets an automatic bye into the second round. But to avoid the disadvantage that would be created from rust the team with the best record in the NL would face the team with the best record in the AL in a 3 game series, and the winner would get home field advantage for the World Series. The team with the second best record in each league would gain a deserved advantage by having 4 home games in the first round against the 7 seed. The 3 seed vs the 6 seed and 4 seed vs the 5 seed would just be a standard 5 game series. The second round would then become a 7 game series. Round 1 1 seed vs the 1 seed from the opposing league 2 seed vs the 7 seed 2 seed receives 4 home games 3 seed vs 6 seed 4 seed vs 5 seed This formula keeps everyone happy. The one seeds don’t get rusty and don’t have to worry about elimination either. There are more games to profit off for the owners. Fan bases that would usual stop watching early in the season still have hope their teams can make the playoffs and therefore they keep watching/spending. The players would be happy because it increases the revenue that they would get as well and they would have far less meaningless games. This would make owners want to spend more in the hopes of reaching the playoffs.
I like the idea of the expanded playoffs this year only. The season itself had been a sprint and the year generally really crazy. Why not have some fun with the format this year? For me, the entire season hasn’t felt real, or very difficult for even mediocre teams. A more difficult postseason somehow ‘legitimatises’ a really short season. However, like you said, Dawson, this gets rid of the grind and let’s face it, the reason why making the playoffs is so deserved at the end of of the 162.
William Staley They (MLB) might actually be desperate enough to do that, but either way, I think it's honestly more realistic than a 32 team expansion.
I'm ok with a 14 team playoff series formatted like Wright suggests in the video but hell no on keeping the 2020 version during a normal, 162 game season. If it's just wild card teams playing against each other until the NLDS, then it's not really that different than what we already have; in the end, only one wild card team can advance. I do also like expanding the NLDS to seven games.
Yours isn't a bad idea. Another option is to handicap the playoffs so that a non division winner playing against a division winner has to win one more game than they normally would, (3 out of 3, 4 out of 5, or 5 out of 7), at least up until the World Series. That way, it might be easier for a mediocre team to make the playoffs, but it would far easier to win the World Series if you win the division.
The expanded playoffs are so much better. There’s less teams tanking. With the old playoff setup you already knew by month 2 15-17 teams already tanked. That’s why people think the sport is boring, more tanking leads to team not trying and for more boring games. With the new set up everyone is trying to get in. Only crappy thing is the first round is best of 3. It’s should be best of 5 or 7. Because like you said anyone who makes the playoffs has chance to win the ws
Give me 12 teams. Go back to east/west divisions. 4 division winners (who get byes) plus 8 wildcards. WC Series is best of 5, all other rounds best of 7. Shorten the regular season to 140 games. Boom. Book it.
16 team playoffs with 7 games series in each round sound good to me. In order for this to happen, MLB needs to get rid of the regular season games in September and end them by the end of August instead.
Both teams that lead their league get a bye. Seeding goes by wins, not division but division can decide tiebreakers. The 2 wild cards fight for the WC spot. First round is top team in their league has a bye, the winner of the WC game would be seed 7. It would be a 5 game series where 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, and 4 vs 5. Next series continues as normal.
I like the 3 game series. It adds some serious stakes. you said any play like this could get you eliminated. that’s what makes it exciting yet also scary. if every series was 7 games it wouldn’t be nearly as interesting until game 4 or later. If your team makes that error shown, emotions are way more wild due to the high stakes. If the opposing team makes the error, the amount of cheering and emotion intensifies. In a 3 game series, every single run counts. Every strikeout. Every hit. But in a 7 game series, while yeah you want ur team to get a good lead by playing well, there’s no real stakes until game 4 and later.
Sub 500 teams should not be allowed to play in the postseason, byes would be given. Finishing second in a 5 team division should not qualify you for the playoffs. Wild Card teams should be based simply on their record won loss. I like the three-game series better than the single elimination wild-card game.
I think if they're gonna expand to 14 teams for future playoffs, then they need to go back the 154 game schedule the MLB used for decades. The season already takes too long with 162 games plus the playoff format as it is. Games shouldn't be played in November, in my opinion. A 14 team playoff format with a 162 game season could end up meaning that most of the World Series games will be played in November with the end coming too close to Thanksgiving.
seems meaningless but owners are not going to give up those 4 home games , not sure what that will work out to in their pocket money but i can guarantee you it's enough
@@sailingyachtlifevsyeanonot7621 Oh I know. The playoffs expanding is more profit driven anyway, so the owners won't wanna give up those 8 regular season games if they don't have to. I just think that would make it work better if the regular season was shortened. The only other alternative would be to start the season in the middle of March, but that would be tricky as well since it'll still be cold in the northern cities and teams that play outdoors might have a few games postponed due to weather(like my Cubs in 2018 that had some April postponements that lead to backlogged schedule late in the season that saw them play 56 games in the last 57 days of the regular season).
I do not like that the first round is best of three. I am fine with the expanded the playoffs to 16 teams as long as they expand the league. Which there are plenty of cities that would support an MLB team. I would prefer a 5-7-7-7 format. But to accommodate it, shorten the regular season to say 154. But I doubt they do something like this. I would also accept a 5-5-7-7 format but I think the best of seven is the perfect format to having the best team win. Thats just me though
That would be much better. I still say 16 is too many, but I'm one of those guys that prefers a 10 team format. A lot of frustration with the new format is the first series is a best of 3, with all seeds playing in it.
I'm in favor of returning to the old 2 division set up of baseball. Go back to the old East/West alignment. This would mean 8 teams in each division. Division winner receives a bye for the wild card round, and the remaining teams with a winning record may advance to the wild card. If only 2 teams than a 3 game wild card round will be sufficient. IF greater than 2 teams then all teams fly to the highest seeds field and each teams plays each other in a round robin playoff. The team with the best record advances to play the division winner in a 5 game round.
Should be 12 teams #1 and #2 division winner get a bye for 1st round (3 games) The reamaining teams will be seeded by record with the 3rd division winner being no lower than the 4 seed. #1 seed plays winner of 4/5 match and #2 plays winner of 3/6 match. Remaining series would be bo5 bo7 bo7 and work like normal.
14 teams make the playoffs. The #1 seed in each league should receive 1st round bye. The remaining division champs should play the wild card round with a clear advantage. (Ex. Just winning 1 game would let them pass that round)
It's really incredible that they letting 16 teams in. That gives teams that don't usually make it a opportunity to make a statement, and I love seeing upsets and top teams being embarrassed. Except the yankees cuz im a fan
If this stays, there will be an 80-82 regular season team winning the world series before too long. Which will make the 162 game long regular season seem even more pointless than it already does. Crazy thought, MLB: What if the thing causing reduced viewing figures isn't that the games are long... it's that the games are *meaningless* If you spend an afternoon watching your team play, you know that the result is just one of 162, that the worst team will win 60 games, that the best team will lose 60 games, that the result of the game you watched probably won't impact whether they reach the playoffs or not, will be forgotten in a week when it's been supplanted by 6 other results, and may not even be representative of how good your team is. (And I know, calling wins and losses meaningless is sort of redundant in American sports, since there's no relegation, so wins and losses are *always* pointless, only revenue matters) Please MLB, cut the number of games!!! I know that means cutting your own ad-revenue which is anathema, but it needs to be done for the long term health of the game. Sure, many will complain that a shorter season 'will prevent good teams from separating themselves from bad ones' but if that were the case, then why do playoffs exist at all? No, make the season shorter, the sport will adapt, teams will look for different things in players, different types of players will excel, and most importantly, the games you're asking fans to sit down and watch, to dedicate their finite time to... will actually matter!
It should high seed vs lower seed through out playoffs! And teams finishing first should get awarded a by if this playoff format stays!! Finishing first almost seems pointless if u don't rewarded 4 it!!!
Winning your division shouldn’t Guarantee you a bye but only guarantee your spot in the playoffs and the team...only reward the 2 best divisional winners from each league with a bye...and the 2 other divisional winners with hosting their wildcard series which should be a best of 5 for the divisional series best 5 and keep the 7 game format so on and so on And there is randomness in every sport that’s what makes them great the old format was flawed...and seeding matters and I don’t think expanded teams is going to change free agency or make the regular season meaningless...if you look at the playoffs this years the Good teams moved on the Marlins outplayed the Cubs who stars have been struggling this whole season...and baseball viewership have been declining for years because baseball fans don’t like change I always felt teams with winning records with weren’t rewarded because of the exclusivity of the old format
Doesn't baseball have such a long season because the owners were reliant on ticket revenues over 100 years ago and baseball is a sport that can be played daily with destroying your body (excluding pitchers).
I think there should be a middle ground for the future. I think it should be 12 teams, 3 division winners and 3 WC spots in each league. The 16 team playoffs is prob Bc it’s a short year.
If Major League Baseball is really that desperate for more money, they might as well let every team get in. Yes, even the team that ends up with the first overall pick. Of course I don't advocate that, just trying to have a little fun.
I feel like Bye weeks dont work as well in the MLB like in the NFL. I feel like if a 1 seed team is hot. A 5-6 day break will cool them off. I just think MLB playere are of consistency and routine
All the major sports let too many teams in the playoffs to make $ it is not good for any of the sports in the NBA it really does not matter how many teams the NBA lets in it is so predictable you only need four teams in the other sports a lot of teams could win it all but if the regular season means anything you should only let in the top 25% or 33% at most.
I completely disagree with this video. One of the biggest problems with MLB is you have too many bad teams who are bad on purpose in order to rebuild. I do think that affects attendence when you are purposely fielding a minor league team masquerading as an MLB team. Adding more teams I think will motivate more teams to be more active at the deadline and will motivate them to try. Also, winning a division does get you an advantage.... Home games. If you can't win a series at home, you don't deserve to move on in the postseason. Trying to save the top teams just so they can move on is lame imo let them earn it.
Imagine being the first place winner of the league and losing to some chump team that limp dicked into the play offs I think if you took first in the division you deserve to be in the DS

Round 1
1 seed vs the 1 seed from the opposing league
2 seed vs the 7 seed 2 seed receives 4 home games
3 seed vs 6 seed
4 seed vs 5 seed
This formula keeps everyone happy.
I'm just tired of the Jays never making it because the Yankees spend too much
I'm just tired of the Red Sox making it because the Rays spend less and still they make the playoffs.
I'm just tired of your bitchalittle bellyaching.
Why does the commissioner of baseball hate baseball so much?
I’m just hoping this is just going to be 2020
🤞
One moment of silence because an expanded format like 2020 may be the only chance Trout can get a ring
💀
16 teams is fine but suggest to reduce the MLB season to 120 games and find a way for division leaders to receive a first round bye
Good video. Thanks bro this clears up the weirdness. Go Blue!!!
Why not a 30 team playoff.
William Staley They (MLB) might actually be desperate enough to do that, but either way, I think it's honestly more realistic than a 32 team expansion.
If we’re going to have 16 teams in the playoffs, let’s make it a real World Series. Invite top 2 teams from japan, China etc.
tell me if i’m wrong but wouldn’t there have to be another thing after the champion series?
Idea for playoffs, whoever are the champions of the MLB and NPB face off for 7 games and it will be called the global series.
I kinda like it besides the bs of Houston gettting a 6 six seed instead of 8
The format this year just needs tweaking but I’m all for expanded playoffs. The NBA has done it for years and the best team always comes on top.
If Manfred is for it, it has to be bad for the game. After all, he protected the Astros players after they cheated.
12 teams is good I think but 14 is too much
Whether its do-or-die game or best-of-seven series, the better team will come out triumphant.
I was about to comment in the comment section above. Thanks for the reminder.
Just joking. Giants 2021!
Sub 500 teams should not be allowed to play in the postseason, byes would be given.
Finishing second in a 5 team division should not qualify you for the playoffs. Wild Card teams should be based simply on their record won loss.
I like the three-game series better than the single elimination wild-card game.
I love this expanded playoffs, makes it more exciting, keeps more fans engaged
Hey Dawson, who do you think will win?
I mean I picked the Yankees at the start of the year so I guess I'll stick with them
Dawson Wright Oh cool
I think if they're gonna expand to 14 teams for future playoffs, then they need to go back the 154 game schedule the MLB used for decades. The season already takes too long with 162 games plus the playoff format as it is. Games shouldn't be played in November, in my opinion. A 14 team playoff format with a 162 game season could end up meaning that most of the World Series games will be played in November with the end coming too close to Thanksgiving.
I agree
seems meaningless but owners are not going to give up those 4 home games , not sure what that will work out to in their pocket money but i can guarantee you it's enough
Single elimination doesn't work for baseball even a five game series is to short
They would have to get the players to agree to shortening the regular season.
If this stays, there will be an 80-82 regular season team winning the world series before too long.
Which will make the 162 game long regular season seem even more pointless than it already does.
Crazy thought, MLB:
What if the thing causing reduced viewing figures isn't that the games are long... it's that the games are *meaningless*
If you spend an afternoon watching your team play, you know that the result is just one of 162, that the worst team will win 60 games, that the best team will lose 60 games, that the result of the game you watched probably won't impact whether they reach the playoffs or not, will be forgotten in a week when it's been supplanted by 6 other results, and may not even be representative of how good your team is.
(And I know, calling wins and losses meaningless is sort of redundant in American sports, since there's no relegation, so wins and losses are *always* pointless, only revenue matters)
Please MLB, cut the number of games!!!
Winning your division shouldn’t Guarantee you a bye but only guarantee your spot in the playoffs and the team...only reward the 2 best divisional winners from each league with a bye...and the 2 other divisional winners with hosting their wildcard series which should be a best of 5 for the divisional series best 5 and keep the 7 game format so on and so on
And there is randomness in every sport that’s what makes them great the old format was flawed...and seeding matters and I don’t think expanded teams is going to change free agency or make the regular season meaningless...if you look at the playoffs this years the Good teams moved on the Marlins outplayed the Cubs who stars have been struggling this whole season...and baseball viewership have been declining for years because baseball fans don’t like change I always felt teams with winning records with weren’t rewarded because of the exclusivity of the old format
Doesn't baseball have such a long season because the owners were reliant on ticket revenues over 100 years ago and baseball is a sport that can be played daily with destroying your body (excluding pitchers).
Personally I think we’ll see how it is after but if a below .500 team wins the WS I think it’ll be interesting
I honesty hate the format itself more then the expansion
Facts 🤣
i actually like this setup, i do think they should reseed after the first round
My brain is hurting from such real talk... Please stop!!!!
I’d only be up for this if they shorten the season. 162 games and still the majority of the league making the playoffs is bullshit.
This is what Manfred or Manfail wants baseball to be ruined
I think there should be a middle ground for the future. I think it should be 12 teams, 3 division winners and 3 WC spots in each league. The 16 team playoffs is prob Bc it’s a short year.
I agree 12 is just perfect for the future seasons now. It takes too much away from a long season with 16.
If Major League Baseball is really that desperate for more money, they might as well let every team get in. Yes, even the team that ends up with the first overall pick. Of course I don't advocate that, just trying to have a little fun.
A 12 team playoff i would like , not 16
Teams that may not deserve a championship can get lucky in the playoffs and win.
The "retlar" season lol 😆
I completely disagree with this video. One of the biggest problems with MLB is you have too many bad teams who are bad on purpose in order to rebuild. I do think that affects attendence when you are purposely fielding a minor league team masquerading as an MLB team. Adding more teams I think will motivate more teams to be more active at the deadline and will motivate them to try.
Also, winning a division does get you an advantage.... Home games. If you can't win a series at home, you don't deserve to move on in the postseason. Trying to save the top teams just so they can move on is lame imo let them earn it.
Imagine being the first place winner of the league and losing to some chump team that limp dicked into the play offs
I think if you took first in the division you deserve to be in the DS
Expand to 32 teams and have four division winners make the playoffs, that's it.
Tampa in 4 games
Houston in 5
Sandiego in 5
Marlins in 3(2020 magic team)
Marlins in 6 games
Tampa in 4 games
Marlins win the World Series in 7
