EDIT: Just to add to this, I would LOVE to see a long-form piece of content on this subject. You have an amazing way of providing accessible science towards the understanding of parkour movements. Is your profession in the sciences by any chance? You could achieve publications from this type of knowledge.
Absolutely wonderful. It's so cool that I literally had the exact same process, mentality, and even the cognitive appraisal when it came to doing my kong gainer pre last week. After that super sketchy bail telling the story to myself "I just did horrible technique and still hit the wall and came out of it fine. That means there's a lot more room for error than I thought and now I don't have to worry about actually hurting myself and I get to just focus on the technique."
It's been an amazing journey watching Dom's parkour world dominance grow every year. Right now in early 2022 he is recovering from a couple of injuries and you can see how he psychologically rebuilds his confidence and humbly tests his limits as he heals.

As someone finishing his Masters in Sport Psychology, it is great to here that Dom actually worked with one years ago and took so much out of it, even to this day. That is not only encouraging, but also speaks volunes for the successes that are possible with conseling. Cheers for the insights
This Dude is a Real DUDE, Absolutely love his approach to life....he was asked in an interview about how long he could keep doing this and he just give a real obscure answer because he doesn't put limitations on himself.... BRILLIANT
i think there is many reasons why Dom is not central enough on his falls on his back: landing sideways offers better protection for his spine pelvis and head, he can see the ground better and arguably it have better potential to reduse impact with your hand. To some degree everyone tend to land of angle, mb Dom just doing it better

Dom takes flips and gaps in parkour to the highest level. I've often watched him and thought, no way, never. In true Dom style he pulls it, leaving me astounded. A great asset and ambassador for the sport.
So much of this makes sense from a skateboarders perspective, I've just never seen/heard it explained so well. I've always had a natural tendency to roll out of falls and spring up after from this dispersal of weight plus momentum. Awesome video and love Dom! Just subbed!
I imagine the other factor at play is how relaxed he is on impact. Like if a baby is in crash, they often do not have any injuries because they are relaxed and do not tense up.

Great insight. I've been skating for three decades and I tell myself good stories too lol. If you're scared or you pause to think, you can cause yourself to fail. You need the confidence, so you need the stories.
Impact has also been shown to build bone density. There was a study comparing bone density of gymnast tibia versus a non gymnast. The gymnast tibia was three times denser. Maybe the reason why he has such dense bones is because he subjected his body to impact over and over and over again. So if we all started throwing ourselves onto the ground hundreds of times a day, we could all probably build massive bone density too LOL
Would this in theory lead to potentially less serious injuries (like in terms of breaking bones and such) when you take a bad fall? I’ve fallen ALOT over the years, because of the activities I like to do, and I’ve got no plans to slow down, but I’ve never broken a bone (minus my nose when I was under 5), despite some rough falls. I would say in general falling a lot in sport makes overall unexpected slip and falls significantly more manageable.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see you go through this type of breakdown with some pro longboarders, sliding, dancing, going over 70 mph, even pushing I feel like it’s such a rich area for this type of content. Excellent! The level of anatomical analysis is great! Especially about Dom's resistance to impact. I love that ice skating is still in his blood and informs his parkour! Stories about his dad were also nice to hear.
Something very important that I have recently had to come to terms with, and start adjusting with for parkour is what your leg/torso ratio is like. Specifically shorter vs longer femurs. Because that will determine how well you are able to collaps into yourself upon high drops. If you have a short femur length for your height like dom does here (you can see that even completly squatted and folded up his knees do not come super high up on him. They are mabey a bit above his nipples, they tuck neatly up under his arms if he wants them to. This kind of femur length is ideal for parkour because it allows you to much more easily keep your center of mass over your mid foot as you collaps down to absorb the impact. This also much more easily let's you transfer any momentum you have into a forward role. I have a fair bit of trouble with heights more than say 10 ft because my femurs are long af. If i crunch up like dom is doing here my knees easily make it to my collar bone/shoulders. I can rest my arms on top of my knees if I really want to but I have to raise my shoulders a good bit to accomplish that. This means that as I collapse downwards to absorb impact my center of mass is forced well behind the mid foot, so if I want to maintain my center of mass in that same spot I have to either pivot onto the balls of my feet, or I have to dorsiflect my ankles to an extreme degree. Being able to do the dorsiflexion would be far better, but to actually maintain it in high impact situations like that I would need to be able to go to a 30 degree, or less flexion angle. Almost nobody can do that with their ankles. Especially ially not in high impact situations. So I am forced to pivot onto the ball of my foot which is absolutly awful for super high drops, because you are concentrating that force onto such a small point. And it overstresses your quads, and doesn't activate your glutes, and hamstrings nearly as much as it should for trying to take those huge impacts. Having a long femur in relation to your torso, and shin is the worst set up for high drops in parkour. Where as a short femur in relation to yoir torso, and shin is the absolute best for it.
Favorite channel, never miss a video!! So useful for training. I also follow a sports/coaching/theory of training… course and i can (thanks to your channel) always bring examples for parkour!! (like explaining why on high impacts without roll it’s mostly your gluts taking it and not your quadriceps)

If I look at his movement it seems like he is dragging anckle weights around or has weight attahed to his hips. His movement just seems heavy, dense., harder for him to establish good flow. On the other hand he is indistructible. It was so interesting to see that I nailed that part. I mean someone that skinny and lean for his height could easely be 10kgs lighter. Absolutely fascinating. Even though I rarely do parkour these videos are really interesting. They give me understanding of my body and why things are happening the way they are.
