Few corrections. Firstly, Soviet Union was already on its way out before the coup. The New union treaty was coming on to effect from August 20. In fact, the primary motivation behind the coup was to prevent the end of Soviet union. That treaty was due to Gorbachev's desperate attempt to save the union by effectively converting it into a loose confederation. Secondly, by 1991, Soviet Union was already defunct de facto although not de jure even before the coup. Gorbachev had very little power except in few areas like army and foreign affairs. Local administrations were following orders from republics not the soviet government. Almost all the republics were taking over Soviet government functions slowly. Russia led by Yeltsin was actually pushing for dissolution of Soviet Union. It already had declared its sovereignty. There were war of laws between central government and Russia which effectively abolished all central laws from Russia.. Russia even withheld tax revenue from Soviet government so that it slowly collapses. Third, Yeltsin was never Gorbachev's close lieutenant. Yeltsin was initially promoted by Gorbachev to counter his rival Victor Grishin but was later purged. Both men had immense mutual hatred. Yeltsin was the head of Powerful Russian republic within the union and was doing everything to undermine central government.
True Brother, in fact Yeltsin had been humiliated as Mayor of Moscow on Gorbachev's order and it was only later due to internal politics that we was accomodated back into the system and as we know the rest is history.
Mr. Shekar. you really did have some fun reporting. I would have loved to be on a plane to Moscow while Yelsten was standing atop a tank and to be able to report it first had would have been super despite the enormous risk to life and freedom. Great man you are even though I sometimes (not always) disagree with your criticism of America, which is only trying to do mostly good in the world these days, although we do have some skeletons in our closet . While I have written some critical things about you in the past (but mostly praises), I am sure you are impartial, given the limits of reporting from India (which jails journalists opposed to the Govt views) . I've been to Russia numerous times, mostly towards the end of the Yelsten era and early in the Putin era (I did meet Putin once) and I could see the desperation and discomfort of the people. who I must say are as nice as anyone in the world. A distinguished scientist told me in 2002 that she was making 1/5th of what her son was making working as a software engineer working for a San Francisco company, I am a scientist and I went Russia to collaborate with the scientific excellence of Russia and I was appalled at how the Yelsten years were a disappointment (even my own country America did not lend a helping hand tp him to avoid letting Russia decent in to an effective dictatorship)

Actually India has a comparatively weak central government. Constitutional theory and the ground reality are sometimes different. USSR was a centralised totalitarian regime---India is an electoral democracy with some liberal features.
@@atulvaibhav5376 agreed but centralisation or call it one man show is back again. States are losing power to the centre and it needs to be reassessed.
@@jeffinjoy17 Not really. Take for example the economic reforms of 1991---all it took was one man (then PM Rao) to drastically change the fundamental economic doctrine of India. States read about it in newspapers the next day. Compare that to the structure of GST Council where even a simple issue of tax change has to be agreed by about 65% of states. Modi has a bad tendency for rash decisions (eg demonetisation) and limelight but that does not match with the policies coming out of BJP. for example BJP has left its penchant for Hindi and is in reality the most liberal party in language field (see use of regional languages in national level exams eg NEET).

You are quite right when you say that democracy is not the only consideration for the ordinary people. Quality of life, pride in their country and society, religion do matter. They are not abstract ideas. The problem with the West and their followers in India is that they think that the US and the UK are gold standards of democratic rule. For your information, until the beginning of 19th century, catholics suffered disabilities in England and even in Ireland in matters of education, jobs, social status. In the 17th century, catholics could not join college. When they were eventually allowed college education, they were held not eligible for a degree. They could not practice professions like medicine, law. In Ireland, the protestant minorities dominated over the catholic majority. The US is one of the most biased society, especially its midwest which is the bible belt. The preferred term over nationalism would be patriotism. Patriotism is the love for one's country, its land, people, the ethos. Nationalism is a modern european concept which led to battles between nations, aggression over other continents, colonisation and exploitation. In a country like India, patriotism has never lead to such disastrous consequences.
Something similar is happening in our country. People are hating democracy like it's the worst form of government and praising dictatorial regimes and figures like they are saints.
What Shri Narasimha Rao probably meant; all social changes have to take the existent society into account. Social change happens 'thro' soft degrees', as Alfred Tennyson said in his famous poem. This is true for any people.
It is my impression that had pro-democracy forces strengthened Shri Gorbachev's hand with financial assistance when he needed it, thus preventing utter economic collapse and the emergence of bread lines, Russia might have been on a different civic trajectory today.
I don't think people in Russia have gained anything from the fall of Soviet union. They still live in an authoritarian regime without FoE. Economic situation remains the same also.
A good journey down memory lane. Perestroika and Glasnost consumed their own propagator, Mikhail Gorbachev. This is a case study for future leaders tp learn.
One urge that subsets all urges like nationalism, identity, etc is that of conservatism. Russian coup was conservationist usurping reformists. Turkey's coup was secularist usurping islamist. In the end hagia Sofia is a mosque and the consumption of alcohol is reduced drastically in Russia under a teetotaler contrary to romanticized version of an average Russian
Was it an outcome of then coldwar or distegration happened organically from with in..what factors were at play..did gorvachov start reforms at his own volition or it was a ploy... Shekhar your take on this..in some of your next..
16:22.. SG Sir is wrong regarding those territories which are in the Indian map, but not under New Delhi's control. These territories are presently not under democracies, but under China and Pakistan. So, IF the Indian nationalists can bring these territories under Indian control, democracy will be established there. So, Indian nationalism and democracy are not contracting each other. Is SG Sir equating Taliban nationalism with Indian nationalism?

Truman Capote, an American author wrote it in..... The Dogs Bark: Public People and Private Places..... inspired by inspired by the author Andre Gide.... "The dogs bark but the caravan moves on" (Gide to Capote one day in Tangiers when Capote was grumbling about a bad review), and most of the pieces are about people and places Capote has observed while moving on since 1942. Though large and covering a long period of time, this book is innocent of political or social opinions of any sort; if Capote has any, he has always kept them out of his writing; and there is a certain shallowness to the collection because of it. It bulges, however, with sharp, subtle observations of people, fascinating reminiscences and travel jottings, wonderful sketches, anecdotes and yarns, and, among other things, the most frightening horror story you've ever heard. Not a deep plate of soup, perhaps, but a marvelously tasty one."
This shows that people are bad by nature, ready to forgive any atrocity and any monstrosity, if their need for power and strength is fulfilled. Especially if it is inflicted on some one they consider other. Sure Russia struggled but so did Soviet Union where millions in Ukraine died due to artificial famine of Stalin. So Russians are ok with that, if they get to have super power status. People acting badly for survival and dignity is different from this.

Marvelous Analysis ~~
Thnx for the episode
I don't think people in Russia have gained anything from the fall of Soviet union. They still live in an authoritarian regime without FoE. Economic situation remains the same also.
*worse
Very informative video sir...
The title of the video shud end with “& lessons for our country” 😀
A good journey down memory lane. Perestroika and Glasnost consumed their own propagator, Mikhail Gorbachev. This is a case study for future leaders tp learn.
If I had SG as my history teacher, may be today I would have been in a different profession
Very insightful.
Was it an outcome of then coldwar or distegration happened organically from with in..what factors were at play..did gorvachov start reforms at his own volition or it was a ploy... Shekhar your take on this..in some of your next..
Truth that should not be told!
It took me by surprise when I got to know that Gorbachev is still alive
How is that a surprise? 1989 was not that long ago.
Thanks for carvaka podcast interview..
'Shock' changes never work, no matter how benign are they.
Putin once miss school for 2 days....
Now those 2 days are called Saturday and Sunday around the world😂😂.
Putin always looks/acts like a Human version of Thanos!!!
Dear SG, do you think Balkanisation of India is possible?
Great ctc sir
This shows that people are bad by nature, ready to forgive any atrocity and any monstrosity, if their need for power and strength is fulfilled. Especially if it is inflicted on some one they consider other. Sure Russia struggled but so did Soviet Union where millions in Ukraine died due to artificial famine of Stalin. So Russians are ok with that, if they get to have super power status. People acting badly for survival and dignity is different from this.
I created a time machine and went to 15 March 44 BC to witness the death of Julius Caesar. And when I reached the place, there was SG covering the news.
Half the people here today seem to be here from The Carvaka Podcast
