  • In this video, I prune my Fukien Tea. I also give a quick update on the Weeping Willow Peninsula. The critters may have taken a big bite out of the willow, but I'm fighting back. Make sure you check out the links below for some great information on Fukien Tea Bonsai.

Shame about the die back 😢 but I'm learning that is all part of the journey. Still a lovely tree in the making 👌🏻 I'm thinking of an air layer or 2 from mine, just in case. Take care

Your Fukien looks great! I just got one last week and I'm just wondering how you water it? Do you just give it a bit of water every other day or do you totally soak the soil? I haven't watered mine heavily, but some white mold started growing on the surface of the soil... which made me wonder if I over watered it? Any advice would be appreciated! :)

Hello, Audrey. My first question is what kind of soil is your tree in? I have really well-draining soil. 1 part Akadama, 1 part pumice, and 1 part lava rocks. I also have shredded up sphagnum moss covering the surface of the pot. I just watered this morning (usually every other day or maybe two days between watering) and I give it a really good soaking. So water runs out the bottom. I have not had any mold issues. I have a room that stays about 45% humidity where the tree is and it's getting plenty of artificial light and a north-facing window now. I also run a fan in my plant room to circulate the air every hour or two for 20 minutes. Tell me more about your solid and location of the tree etc.

@@DavesBonsai Thanks so much for taking the time to reply! :) I honestly don't know what kind of soil it is in, just whatever it came in from the bonsai shop (it's a specialty shop so I would hope that they start it off with the correct kind of soil!). Wow your plant set up sounds awesome! I will try what you do for the watering and give it a good soak every other day, I have a feeling that I haven't been watering it enough, since water never ran out the bottom. The mold seems to be under control now thankfully it's almost totally gone, I've been trying to give it as much sun as I can by putting it in the window, but here in Switzerland it has been super dark and rainy so unfortunately no direct light all week. I have been thinking of getting a LED full spectrum plant light for it, what do you think about that? The tree is in a west-facing window (we only have east and west windows in the apartment), it's near a radiator but it only ever gets warm and our apartment is relatively humid even in the winter. I've been spraying the leaves with water daily too. I could send you some pictures if that would be helpful?

@@audreyschult5088 Audrey, Yes, I would recommend a grow light, but you don't have to get the ones that give off the purple hue, I have several lights right now that supplement my North facing window where the Fukien is and it seems to love it. These are lights from one of the big home fix it box stores. They are LED, but not the ones that give off the pink/red/blue/purple hue. It all depends upon how much you can stand the odd colors in your home. For me it's my plant room in the basement, so nobody but me sees it. I'd love to see pictures. Send them directly to my email if you wish. davesbonsaitv@gmailcom. Keep me posted on how things are going.

@@DavesBonsai Oh good to know about the colors of the lights! I don't think I'd mind strange colors too much :P But right now in Switzerland shops are closed so I was thinking about ordering something online, do you have any recommendations? Just to get an idea of what might be a good kind. Oh thank you! I'll send you some pictures now! :) Really appreciate it!
