    As a mediocre blue belt myself, I can tell you that I found a ton of success doing, more or less, what Chewy is talking about. Each time I am on the mat I set a small goal. Pass someones guard, not getting swept by the guy we call "the janitor", escape side control, etc, etc, etc. I know that that isn't exciting or rewarding; but when I was about 10-12 months in as a white belt, I decided it was going to be a long time before I was even close to our blue and purple belts so I found my little victories.
    I am back in that situation again now after contracting covid and being out for a couple weeks in conjunction with the gym being closed for a week or so; I was out for almost a month and I am still having to deal with lingering covid effects on my stamina, cardio and breathing. It is hard to stay motivated but, the truth is that anything that requires this much of you physically and mentally is going to tax you mentally especially the longer that you do it. I find that blue belt is harder, for me, because I have my own expectations that I didn't have when I was a white belt. If I got submitted by something stupid that I did, I could always shrug my shoulders and say, "I'm just a white belt". Once I got promoted I kick myself everytime I make a dumb mistake like, "I am a blue belt, I should no better than that." I suspect that that is part of the reason that so many people struggle at blue belt. Just a thought.

    I know that feeling all too well. Getting stuck in that “winning the roll” mindset. Especially when it comes to grappling with lower belts. When I gave that up I feel like that’s when my game really started to elevate.

    So, I started training a decade ago at 29, almost 30. I was the "old man" in the gym. I've been training consistently with one partner almost that entire decade and he's kicked my ass for that long. Add to the fact that 6 years ago, I decided I didn't have enough going on in my life and decided cancer sounded cool. Like everyone, I have hammer and nail days. Sometimes, when I'm the nail, I end up at the edge of the mat at the end of the night and I question why, at 40, I'm still doing this. Why I'm still trying to keep up with these dudes 15+ years my junior who are infinitely more athletic than me. I consider quitting... And then I go home, shower, and come back the next class.

      One of the things Pedro Sauer says to do as an older grappler is learn to feel your opponent so you can stay steps ahead of them. He said that's how Helio could defeat younger skilled practitioners aswell as himself. Practice rolls shouldnt be competitions but learning experiences. I never try an best folks at practice, I save that for competition. I use practice to put myself in terrible positions an learn. Use white belts and some blues to practice your offence and higher belts to toughen your defense. Think of it like that

    Today rolling with the professor I “got” him in a triangle from north-south. I’m a 2 stripe white belt and I know that goes waaaaaaaaay softer than what he can do with us, because if not there would be no match. Instead of being happy that I improved or something, he got serious/angry. Got up and told me to go again. Obviously he obliterated the shit out of me. Then asked me to go again 3 more times. I don’t know why, if he thought he had something to prove or something. Like, I know you let yourself get into bad positions. I know you don’t do weird stuff to me. I know physically you can destroy me. I know who the black belt is and who the white belt is. I completely respect you. This doesn’t change a damn thing. I didn’t got even a fist bump after it as a reward. Nothing. It has discouraged me from trying to show him how much I have improved. I don’t know if I should tell him something or just forget about it. It really makes me sad. I really wanted to show him how much I’ve been working on my bjj. I don’t really want to roll again with him. Like, I know I’ll get injured. I don’t know why I’m telling you this but I had to let it go. Sorry for the long text chew. Merry Christmas.

      It sounds as if he had his mind calibrated on rolling with the old you and then allowed you to get to a point where he could escape before. All of a sudden, he realized that he was rolling with an improved edition of you, but it was too late. He may have been mad at himself for being too lax and felt that he the burble had burst on the mystique that surrounds our art/sport.

      I would seriously consider finding another gym. What he did is completely disrespectful and uncalled for. If he’s like this with everybody his gym won’t last long if it’s his. If it’s not his gym I would go all Karen on them and talk to the owner/manager. Also if he’s not like this with everyone why was he like this towards you?

    This is the perfect scenario for developing much keener micro-kinesthetic sensitivity. As the purple belts are doing their thing, focus your awareness on their movements and try to make miniscule reactions to it to interfere with their success. This will help develop not only fine control over your movement but begin to 'feel' their intentions and react to them appropriately. The win in this situation is to make them work more for their win, make them feel like they aren't that good if they can't easily submit a blue belt.

    When I switched over to 10th Planet (from the gi), it was the opposite for me. All of a sudden, I was a Purple Belt (two stripes) facing a sea of tough blues (and white belts) who were beyond tough. They had been learning heel hooks from day one. (I started focusing on them as a purple belt). They had been learning a host of moves from the warm-ups that gave them an unpredictable game. I had my strong grounding in the basics, but the trees of knowledge they developed from the truck, rubber guard, lock down, etc., had me searching for answers.
    I could no longer grab someone by the gi, throw them down, pin them with the gi and submit them. I had to deal with the sweat on the arms, the new grips, the numerous leg lock entries and defenses, etc. However, I dealt with it the same way I dealt with gi BJJ, I kept going. The same way I climbed the ladder in gi is the same way I am doing in no gi as well. The same factors apply as far as attrition, dedication and consistency. Those that remain get good, those that don't, don't.

    • @timothythomas2561

      Do you find 10th planet to be more practical in terms of self defense?

    • @mouthguardcomic
      @mouthguardcomic 3 года назад +1

      @@timothythomas2561 I would say it is all relative, as each school is different. However, 10th planet is MMA oriented as it is clinch oriented from the bottom. My last gi school was self defense oriented (mostly leading up to testing). But many BJJ schools that I attended were not self defense oriented and they were just as interested in “sport” BJJ as most no gi schools. I would say that 10P seems to bring beginners up to speed much quicker than traditional BJJ schools. One set of warmups (there are 8 warm ups with four sequences in each) can have 25 movements and if you come to class regularly you will become familiar with many things quickly. That’s why so many 10P players dominate at the white, blue and to a degree, the purple belt levels in no gi. - Also, many 10Ps have a 101 or fundamentals class where self defense and traditional BJJ is taught. - In the end, I would say it depends on the school and ultimately the person training.

    • @timothythomas2561
      @timothythomas2561 3 года назад

      @@mouthguardcomic Thanks for the detailed response. I am not interested in butt-scooting which I consider to be highly unrealistic. I was thinking about 10th planet West La- I took a trial class that I loved but I am not sure if it is sport or self defense. The 10 planet headquarters in LA is definitely sport. Is the school you are currently attending geared towards self defense?

    • @mouthguardcomic
      @mouthguardcomic 3 года назад +1

      @@timothythomas2561 Not a problem...No, the one I am is not geared toward self-defense in the traditional sense. However, in my experience, if you have a self-defense curriculum (Gracie Combatives, Gracie Barra, etc.) that you can get a hold of, you can drill with other people (even if it is one technique a week). Also, even though it is not the focus of our school, our main instructor is versed in it (so you can always ask for help). Plus, each school will have wrestlers, former or current gi guys, etc., who you can always latch onto for guidance in whatever subject you want to explore.

Im not a big girl either so my work is most definitely cut out for me. I'm in a smaller town and its one class but I appreciate being the worst one cause it pushes me harder! Yeah...these young Thundercats roll hard. I’m cool with surviving. My “success” most times is delay and denial. If I can get a sweep, that is a resounding success. The levels or efficacy of my success depend on whom I’m rolling with. My definition changes with the brand new white belt. It changes again when rolling with the instructor. It changes even more when rolling with a “top leveler”. Absolutes are sketchy when we deal with jiujitsu.

The encouraging thing is when i roll with other white belts and i can wear them out or get a submission. Luckily the higher belts at my gym are really good about letting me get to the technique we learned if it's possible while we are rolling so I can see how to hit it.
