How To Create More Energy for BJJ Training Consistently

- In today's video I answer a question about energy levels for BJJ training. It comes from a 3 stripe Blue Belt who says that their energy levels are all over the place. Sometimes they feel great for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training and rolling and then other times they feel ultra lethargic. The same thing happens with lifting where their energy levels and strength is all over the place.
In this video I share an important idea that more Jiu-jitsu practitioners should pay attention to which is focus on your diet and take note of what's making you feel better. And the best way to do this is to make your diet super consistent. Eat the same / similar foods everyday. While it takes discipline and may be kind of boring the results are helpful whether you're trying to lose weight, gain weight or improve your energy levels.
The reason is if you're eating the same foods all the time then if you feel bad you can see how your diet has changed and make adjustments. Whereas if your diet is all over the place it's very difficult.
I also share my recent diet and how it's been helping out my own energy levels in training.

Ramsey dewey gives me old school elliott hulse vibes too
Damn what ever happened to Elliot lol

Dude this!
What a downfall of a channel forreal. Lost me with all the trump and redpill stuff.
New bjj practitioner here. 32 years old wish I would have started sooner! Been a little over a month and loving it. Thank you for your content! Keep it coming!👏👏
hope you doing well

That shit's funny dude
Another big thing for me was sleep. I used to get horrible sleep but I always felt lazy for not going to jiu jitsu in the morning and after a while I got tired of feeling like that and went to a sleep doctor and was diagnosed with sleep apnea. Have a CPAP machine now and I feel like I have unlimited stamina.
My first BJJ class is tomorrow! I’m looking through all your white belt tips 😁 joining the army so this seemed like a great sport to do until shipment!
How do you find it?😄
@@filipfrunze9067 I loved it! I’ve been battling cancer for about 7 months now and hoping to return by this upcoming august!
@@BG-fv2ql how ya doing brother
The week of my competition this weekend, I trained 8 times in five days. I rolled every round. I think diet is super important, especially if you're inexperienced like me (I only have three months of jiu jitsu). I ate super clean and ended up winning all my fights by submission in less than a minute! It felt great too. I wasn't tired at all nor did I have any burnout.
That’s impressive 3 months of BJJ. How many times a week you trained?
@@TheSantos173 5 usually, but the week of the tournament I trained 8 times in 5 days and for a week I regrettably trained 10 because I'm young and dumb lol
@@ryanliu6694 that’s awesome man, you prob have about 60-80 sessions so far which surpasses my 38 and I started in June
@@TheSantos173 Hey man maybe I'll burn out. It's better to go less and love it then go more and hate it
Changing up my diet and lifting for endurance helped me significantly with energy in general. Adding more protein with carbs in the morning was the first step. Sometimes I switch it up to keep it interesting, but if I stick to my key nutrition plan I feel like I roll and lift better.
Man I feel this big time. There are days where I have gone to three classes in a single day and feel tired but can compete by the end. There are also days where I miss two days and rest and show up and feel like it's my first day at BJJ and I'm almost puking.
I’m a new follower/listener I can’t thank you enough 🙏🏽
Great advice. This video is actually inspiring me to get my diet back on track. Thanks Chewy!!
Swole and Roll comes out today. Cool to see your progression!
God Bless! Keep up the good work!
Ossss - dead on - this is the toughest type of discipline for me!!
I have been boxing for years, but you have inspired me to start taking classes. I will be starting with team chitwood to begin my MMA journey this week!
GREAT advice. THanks Chewy!
Great tips
Suuuuuuper helpful video tysm!
Ive been experiencing the same exact thing recently and this video came at the perfect time
Glad it was helpful.
Very informative, it’s what I needed to know being newly joined jiujitsu. Thanks for the infos.
I really feel this, had my first competition yesterday and felt like I had 0 energy 😰
I have learned, a bowl of oatmeal about 1.5-2 hours before a hard class is a great way to make sure I have enough in the gas tank.
Works for me too. My favorite : 2 cups whole oats, 2 Tbs chia seeds, 2Tbs shredded coconut, 20 chopped almonds and honey to taste. Roll fuel! Coconut water or Watermelon juice right after. Oss!
@@oceangrown8617 coconut water mixed 50/50 with pomegranate juice is my go to after class! A bit sweet, a bit tart, very refreshing! Oss!
Yup, it's not just what you eat, it's when you eat. Complex carbs 2 hours before action. Nothing after that except water or simple carbs like fruit.
If you look further into why this is a great meal you will find it is due to the amount of carbs and what GI rating it is
Nice, that's easy to do I need to try this.
I'd say if diet doesn't do the trick, maybe have a look at your sleep. Small changes in my sleep quality have huge impacts the next day. Lots of smart watches and rings these days will tell you more details about your sleep cycles and if you're getting quality sleep or not.
Starting bjj tomorrow night, i'm not sure i could go that far as to sticking to a strict diet, but for the last year I've been making an effort to eat healthier. Started by slowly cutting sugar out of my coffee, then giving up one of my favorite vices, candy, I keep slowly marching on to a healthier life style. With every change I've made, I feel MUCH better. Can't wait to see where this path is gonna take me!
how are you now
@@wtfimcrying still pushing forward. I train when I can, when life isn't busy getting in the way lol, but living much healthier than I was a few years ago and feel great. Thanks for checking in. :)
@@etherealessence ya no problem man great to see you still doing well. Happy training!
Sleep and nutrition , and hydratation are key.
Thanks Chewy. Great vids as always. Can I ask what your post workout meal is?

i really gotta get my diet on point. it's a shame that's the hardest part. Training and working out is fun but dieting is not lol im very interested to see how my body would recover and if some of these minor nagging injuries would go away.
do a full day of eating of this new diet
Do you have a video talking about what lifting program you're on? I would love to know
I follow the Gracie Diet and basically eat fruit, meat, eggs and raw dairy with very limited vegetables. I feel fucking amazing.
@chewjitsu Great video, did you hire a dietician or other professional? Were they dedicated to sports nutrition?
Yeah....I get off from work around 4pm everyday......and I eat right after to try and digest as fast as possible. Sometimes I make bad decisions in my food choices (like a burrito with beans) and by my 7:30 BJJ class I've got gas like you can't believe.
man i really hope there isn't another lock down, imma be so sad if i can't train again D:
Hope for nothing, be prepared all the time.
Who is your diet coach? I would love to see if he can help me too. Thanks!
Excellent video again. Have you looked into Chad Wesley Smith of Juggernaut training systems programs yet? He's been training high-level jiu-jitsu guys for strength and conditioning.
Thank u for the video. Iam a fit 50 year old that started doing bjj 2 weeks ago, 3x a week M, Wand F at 6am. Since I started doing BJJ I have not done weight lifting which I love to do but I been very sore 😞.
My endurance is very bad too☹️ the most i have rolled is two 5 min rounds plus live drills.
Anyways, should I lift the same days I do BJJ? I do BJJ at 6am M,W and F and thinking about weight lifting the same days but later on like around 7pm..OR should I lift on the none BJJ days better like T TH and S?? Also I was just lifting to keep muscle and to stay lean. Sometimes I would lift heavy. Iam a 50 year old 5'8 about 180lbs.
Do I need to modify my lifting now that iam doing BJJ??.
In my home gym I have a lat pull down machine, a rack, a functional trainer, sled, airdyne bike, kettle bells, dumbells , medicine balls, battle ropes, macebells, sled, punching bags etc...I also like to do 30 min hitt workouts like once a week.
Who is your diet coach?
Can you write down that diet plan?.. For the week... So we (i) can have a start base plan?.. I could do with a bit less joint pains and a little more energy.. 😉
What about salt and seasoning? Are you not using them?
"I'm not talking about listening to a Joe Rogan episode"...triggered!
Haha.
Jiu jitsu is the easiest cardio in world to do - amen to that. That's why I am doing it.
I used to have enough energy with bad diet. Now I don’t have enough energy with alright diet. So, in my case, diet may only be a tiny factor
Its not uncommon for people to have lows and highs. I'm sure mood can effect it greatly. If work grinds you down it will carry to other parts of your life.
How do you balance heavy weight lifting and bjj. I’m in high school so only have so much time in my day
Wait till after hs to lift
@@LeftEyeofRa yeah that’s definitely not a option I’ve already been lifting for 2 years and I’m not stopping
