And first off anyone who learns a berimbolo without watching a video a hundred times is a genius

that's how i learned the berimbolo was just watching it over and over. it's my main move now and no one ever taught it to me. #bololife

I've done this. I'm a bigger guy 270 6'2 but I've really enjoyed watching smaller people do cool back takes like the ninja roll. So I watched and watched and I got into the position and managed to do it with never having drilled it before.

I've posted the same story before - but I've had a lot of success (relatively speaking) by doing just that. You find that move and learn every single small detail about it. I'd watch the technique, then try to perform it in detail, in my head. Of course you get stuck on certain parts "wait, what did they do with their right hand?" Then you go back and watch that part again until you have it. So you build upon the sequence each time. Then you get stuck on the next sequence "Okay, he turned, but how did he turn, what was he grabbing where was his weight..etc." go back and watch it again. Once I get the whole technique, I forget about it and try to remember it in perfect detail a few hours later. Usually there are still a few spots that you can't remember. So you go over it again until you can visualize the technique in great detail, in its entirety.

All professional athletes watch tape as far as I know. We watched game tape twice a week in collage football. The Sunday after the game and then a mid week tape session based on position. I got recommendations on quality Jiu Jitsu content and it has helped me improve and understand faster.

Visualization fires off the same neural networks that doing it does. The more you fire them the more efficient they get. So visualizing reps definitely does help no end!

Thanks Chewy! I downloaded my gyms syllabus for blue belt and I'm chipping away at different techniques, right now I'm on sweeps, and I watched your scissor sweep video with Chad a couple times but it didn't stick in class. I'll keep watching it. Thanks again

I might watch 50 videos one night and only manage to implement one technique from all of them in rolling the next day. It can be something small, like an important detail about a sweep - or something bigger, like a new sub from a position I don’t often play from. It’s completely random, as far as I can tell, but it does work. It requires a lot of attention and concerted effort, not just mindlessly playing video after video :)

I'm pretty sure he was joking. I mean, he might have learned a couple of movements from that game, but it didn't teach him how to strike, he was already an elite fighter.

I noticed sometimes coaches think that instagram videos aren't jiujitsu but it's like dude I literally have the coach explaining to me 100 times if i need it when they don't have enough time to explain it more than once. I was tapping purple belts off str8 instagram youtube and practice

Unless you were combining training with videos, which is essentially just extra study which would of course make you progress faster, I'm calling bullshit on you tapping purple belts

I love watching BJJ youtube videos to really tighten up my techniques, but that's only once I've trained for a few years and have context to put them in. I have a grappling dummy with a Gi and it's been great during the lockdown when I cannot train.

Fantastic video, Chewy!! That’s why I watch & study so much - definitely translates to the mat - I remember watching a cool reversal from bottom of side control that you showed rolling over the top guy’s elbow - I worked it and still use it today - sometimes get an inverted triangle from it - I saw a Kesting/Kwok lapel choke from side control - worked it & used it - saw a kid show a baseball bat choke from bottom of side control and it works, either to finish or to sweep - when it doesn’t work, it’s either not a high % move or because I didn’t practice it or I wasn’t doing it right - I’ll often bring a move to my instructor in a private and he’ll add a tweak or two and suddenly it starts working for me - keep the awesome instruction coming - totally grateful ...

I watched your video for the N/S Kimora and hit it as my fist submission in bjj. I find it valuable considering I came into the sport with no prior exposure.
Since then, I've utilized videos to expand upon what my professor is showing me in the classes. Certainly when I was stuck in mount for weeks.

I hit the re-grip sweep you showed on the regular in live sparring. The simple moves seem to be the easiest to pick up and apply quickly. The other thing I learn from watching a lot of videos are principles; the things that guide me when I'm not totally sure what move would be best.

I very rarely go to a bjj class, i average less than one a year but grapple random people more like 20 times a year. I spend hours watching mma and grappling film and imagine myself doing it all the time. Im talking about hundreds of times and no gf, no friends, all i do is watch mma. So when i get a chance to grapple someone i notice HUGE leaps in my skill and execution, despite being isolated. The internet is the most vital tool to the martial artist in the 21st century. People like chewy have helped me tap blue belts while almost never even going to bjj. I am better off going to one, but i am still greatful to be in this era of free knowledge

Videos from the masters are fantastic for any sport if you study them with obsession, with slow motion and freeze-framing if necessary, and then practice them solo and then live.

Some people don't do so well. I've always been able to watch techniques, focus on them, visualize them, and be able to hit them in the gym. It's not as simple as just watching, but hell probably half my techniques are learned online.

Better to practice 1 move 1000 time than to have 1000 moves only practice once. Be always open to new techniques but refine your basics and focus on a set of moves to master. Be patient and with time, effort, pain and let's hope minimal injury, you will sharpen your blade. In reality, you never stop learning and with time you will see the gains if you put the time on the mats.

It helps with the knowledge aspect but it doesn’t help with practicing the moves physically. I’ve tried applying my knowledge to my rolling and retaining from the videos is the hardest part for me. Like I have to have someone with me practicing each step in order for me to retain the details of the move.
