  • What do you eat before a BJJ class? Depending on what time of day you roll this will change how you fuel up for Jiu-Jitsu. Whether you are a 6am warrior or a 7pm Nightly Ninja having the right thing in your system can change the quality of BJJ class. JT & Joey have very different preference when it comes to eating and the time of day does have a huge impact on what you eat and the exact timing of when.

    I love the routine I have. Up at 4am, bottle of water, 2 cups of coffee, read for an hour, a bowl of raisin bran. At the gym by 545am, stretch, warm up, class starts at 6am. Train for an hour, at work by 8am feeling amazing.

      In the bed by 830 and read for 30 minutes, there is no blue light at all. TV, phone, computer etc...all off. Sound asleep by 915.

      Bed at 10 wake at 8 drink a cup of black coffee eat couple of dates or figs then stretch a little bit read or play guitar then training at 11 until 13 then I eat a nice meal at 15 then I do whatever I have to do

      I am up at 6 am, the jiu-jitsu gym is just 15 minutes 🏃‍♂️ from my house.... training starts at 7:15 am and around 8:55 I am at home making coffee. I work from 9am until 5:30pm from home, around 1pm I hit the gym to do resistance training for 1 hour. After work I still manage to go to the 2nd jiu-jitsu training starting 17:30, 18:45 or 20:00. Normally I train 5 times a week, but I could be there easily 10 times a week.

    It takes at least an hour (99.9% of people) to pass food through the small intestine.
    Depending on how hard you're rolling and how shook up your gonna get, So black belt who's a fuckin smooth snake with no heartbeat (beast, every roll is at his pace) can eat 1 hour or one minute beforehand and be ok.
    Most people give at least 2 hours or you're gonna have to pull back at some point or vomit.
    Personally, white belt, newb, I eat breakfast at 8:30-9:30am and roll at 12:15pm. If you eat enough for breakfast it should keep you going for 3 hours+ On these days I sometimes snack after class (1:45ish) or just go home and eat at 2:30pm. Or eat breakfast and lunch and a snack all before 4:30pm and roll at 7:30.
    Hydration is far more important imo. Especially for those eating proper filling balanced meals. If you feel terrible before class eat a few fig newtons or a banana an hour or so before class or half a banana and one fig newton anytime and just be prepared if blehhhhch vomit.

      *after night class I'd be home around 9pm and eat dinner then and stay up til 11pm.I probably could skip this meal that's rare. #cheers

    I'm currently attempting to write a job application while not eating many carbs. I'm injured and do not want to gain weight to stress what's left of my knee. No wonder it's not going well!😂

      if you are not training then a overall reduction in calories is a better option then just reducing calories. your body still needs carbs as its preferred fuel source when you are injured (how else do you think it will heal)

    shot of cold brew coffee, no acidity like a fresh espresso. two pieces of toast and a banana in the Am before classes. leave the protein intake for after training as its not that of a priority for jiujitsu "fuel" during training

    On the days that I have to train at 7pm I just have breakfast and lunch. I don’t eat before or after training cause I have GERD. If you have situation like mine you can give it a try guys.
