  • Chatterbox is a new format for me in which I do just that - chat! There will be mini reviews and things of use, comment on new stuff, and probably old, reactions to comments on the videos etc etc.
In this instalment I chat about 'Kabuki' tape and show off some excellent bargain buy model kits.

I honestly take whatever Will Pattison says with a grain of salt. He is the self-proclaimed expert on just about everything. Thanks for your review on the tape !

While he's very forthright, he certainly tests lots of things and posts the results. I don't agree with everything the man says, but I've had good results from anything he's recommended based on a test.

Thanks much for your tape "inservice"--the "rabbit hole" that refreshes with insight!
And, congratulations at landing some great models at very friendly prices! I look forward to your videos of their builds.

I really like the broad washi tape from Daiso (a Japanese store which sells all sorts of handy things). I sliced this up recently to make straps for a tarp on an Airfix Hawk and found it comparable to the Tamiya tape (which I still stick with - ha ha - because I love the holders). There's a 3M tape (made by or for 3M Japan) which looks to be the same thing - Fanch Lubin turned me on to that. I love that you call the holder "the snail"! Brilliant.

Thanks Jen, I’ve been tempted in the past with alternatives to Tamiya and always went back to them. For blocking in I just use the very low tack DIY masking tape (often purple) which works a treat for two quid😊

Been down this road...just ended up with Tamiya again, its just the best. Also use wide normal masking tape for sensitive surfaces to mask off larger areas. However i never let it touch the model, fix it on top of Tamiya tape...Love your vids! 😊

Those Revell/ICM 1/32 kits are superb value for money as you say. My son has built the Tiger Moth (twice) and the Stearman and the Gladiator. If you can get one, the 1/32 Bücker Jungman is great too.

Bang on the nail there Jen. I do use stuff from the now defunct Wilkinsons for blocking in. The MT stuff would ok if it was wider, it’s quite useless as it is. ICM’s bipes are glorious.

Maybe you should let Amazon know when you are going to promote products... I am from the states so I can't order from Amazon UK but it shows out of stock on the kip tape. They are probably wondering why there was such a huge demand all of the sudden. You are totally right about the Tamiya tape holders, I mean snails. I actually never heard them called that before but you have a point from the side.. keeping the tape edges clean. Looking forward to more builds.

Have built the 1/32 Gladiator from ICM, and it is a beautiful kit!

KABUKI! 😂 I see you are a coffee person as I am 🍵
Always a pleasure to watch your videos, informative & entertaining. BTW, my guess is the actual Royal Mail Tiger Moth is currently out of service due to lack of proper management, much like Royal Mail itself 😅 Anyway, looking forward to the next step of the Mosquito build, Jim 👍

Sorry I sent you down the rabbit hole! I find the MT tape excellent and better for slicing in tiny strips.

No need to apologise, I found it interesting to realise how we learn things and then forget them again. Preference is a very personal thing though, I'm sure lots of people would get on well with the MT tape

And ordered! I’ve been using yellow frog tape. Very similar but inconsistent adhesion. Amaze-balls

I bought the same tape, and found it to the same as you. It just wasn't very good imo, I wish it had been as good as Tamiya. But I just didn't find that it was, and I understand that the Tamiya tape is more expensive. For me, it's a very small percentage of what I spend on modeling . But as some below mentioned, I use Frog tape also.

I absolutely agree with you about that box of tape. I bought some and it doesn’t stick very well and for canopies is awful as it lifts!

At the end of the day, what people call the tape is largely irrelevant. The important point is whether it works for what you want to use it for!

Been there. Done that. Bought them, (And the tape). Just got to sneak them in past the wife somehow. Damn Revell's HUGE! boxes. Why Revell? Why?

Great video Jen! I have noticed that my 40mm Tamiya branded tape does indeed have the Kamoi Tape label inside the roll. I also notice it's not as steadfast to stay put as well as the other smaller widths of Tamiya tape. Happy to know the Kip tape is much closer in properties to the Tamiya tape. I'll be looking to pick up a roll.

I find the Daiso washi tape to be easier to handle then the 40mm Tamiya Kamoi-branded tape. Can't put my finger on what, but it seems to tear off better than the Tamiya 40mm. I know, that sounds awfully vague!

I watched the same Will Patton video years ago and purchased similar tape on Amazon. I was not impressed with it. I went back to using (and spending the $$) trusted Tamiya tape. I hope whatever it has been that's keeping you away from the workbench is resolved soon. You might notice my new signature. I started my own RUclips modeling channel last month. I do a little mix of things. Currently working on a 1:48 Eduard F4F-4 Wildcat and a 1:25 MPC 67 Pontiac GTO. Peace and love.

Thank you. Primarily the expense. But also the dependency on fair weather and a suitable/accessible flying field. I already had most of the tools/supplies I needed to do plastic modeling, since it was something I had already done a little of over the years. I've just been adding to it more in recent months.
