5 Caving Trips That Are Not for the Faint-Hearted

  • According to the Collins English Dictionary, if you say that something is not for the faint-hearted, you mean that it is an extreme or very unusual example of its kind, and is not suitable for people who like only safe and familiar things. Each of these 5 trips is an example of extreme caving.
    Part of the attraction of caving for me is pitting myself against nature and these 5 caving trips are amongst the most technically difficult trips I've done in my thirty plus years of cave exploration. Completing each trip in the knowledge that I'm one of a privileged few to have ever done so has led, in each case, to an enormous sense satisfaction.

      It is about how arrogant people are about their life! People usually do anything dangerous for two reasons; they are naive and they do not think anything can go really wrong for them. Then they have an accident and realize they are going to die. I assure you they regret it! If they survive many stop risking their lives and some few forget the panick and do it again! This time they think it can't happen to me twice and I am experienced now! They think they have nine lives. They are all mortal and dying like that would be a nightmare and a sad way to exit this world. You should not risk the lives of rescuers for your fun!

    I really-really appreciate your videos. I have a fear of tight places and would never venture near something like the coffin, let alone be able to negotiate a narrow squeeze while water was running down my neck. However, I've loved caves since I've been a child. My mother took me to visit some of the more famous Hungarian caves open to the public (Abaliget, Aggtelek) and I very much enjoyed them. The air, the mood, the stones, the formations, and of course the bat colonies too. It's fantastic that someone does these trips and shares it in a nice, edited, enjoyable way with everyone else.

    How do you crawl downward into something so tight, not knowing what's ahead of you except from a map? You're going to have to climb back out, what if it's too slippery and/or you can't position yourself to lift yourself up?
    These videos fascinate me because i can't comprehend the willpower to put myself in that position.

    • @CaverKeith
      @CaverKeith  3 года назад +1

      A golden rule is to NEVER crawl head first down an unknown hole. If it closes up or gets too tight, it's very difficult, if not impossible, to back out.
      Having said that I have been confronted with unknown climbs down and all I can say is that assessing them calls on my years of experience and knowing my capabilities. I have descended most of them but occasionally discretion has been the option I have taken.

    For some people when they look at this, it's an absolute terrible nightmare, but for others like us cavers we look at this and go what is beyond that point and there's nothing stopping me. I'm going to get past this squeeze. Please be aware that just because something looks scary doesn't necessarily mean it is. Yes, of course we take every precautionary measure necessary and we will continue to do so. But as long as your gear is really up to par, you're aware of what you're doing and what you're surroundings are, you are not going to get flooded in because you know the rain and you know there's no chance of it, you are really relatively safe. Could really get you hurt is freaking out in a small area where you do eventually get stuck and some rescuers unfortunately just can't get down there from lack of experience to not wanting to put anybody else at danger etc. This is a sport, at least in my eyes, and once you're adrenaline for life has run dry, and you find yourself searching for anything and then you come across something like this and it really pulls you in know that maybe it's time that you go into the caves. Everything new is scary. It doesn't remain that way. Cheers and safety first!

    This is overdramatized, I assure everyone here that it’s not really a big deal. Not much different than having sheets too tight on your bed. It’s the exertion that should worry people. Just be in shape and willing to work for an extended period and it’s all good. I’m 205 pounds and never had an issue with 978 confined space caves done to date. It’s literally a patience and frustration thing, if you can’t control either it’s a panic thing. Remember, at least one person made it through before you because it’s mapped out. Pay attention to the map, don’t be all eager to determine a new route in a mapped cave because, trust me, it’s been mapped within tight resonantly. You want to be a cave explorer instead of a caver, that’s on you. And if you do, be smart and be good at mapping it out for the future cavers. FYI, wet hard caves are easier, more rewarding, and less stressful than dry desert caves. Just be seasonal about it and monitor conditions and the forecast beforehand. The amount of deaths or accidents vs successful cavings are just like every other “extreme” activity.....low. Common sense, capability, and ability to resist panic is fine. Peer pressure should never be an issue, like he casually notes here with, “do you want me to lie to you?” Go with friends who have the same values and don’t pressure you to go further than what you are comfortable with, just like mountaineering or vert climbing.

      I’m claustrophobic and just watch these videos out of dark curiosity. BUT I understand the appeal of going somewhere that is so prehistoric and strange. I’ve been in the tourist caves. The ones without any tight passageways and with a gift shop and rails and fluorescent lights. It’s magical to see the structures underground. And I think for these less-explored caves, the magic is that you’re in a place where no human has been before and can find fossils and rare species of cave animals.
