    How to do string cladding
Welcome back to a new tutorial on staircase renovation. In this video, we are going to show you how to clad the exterior strings on a staircase.
Our string cladding panels are 2.4 m long. In some staircases, the string will be longer than this, as is the case with our staircase here. So, we will need to join 2 panels together. You can join the panels wherever you wish but, aesthetically we would recommend joining them in the middle.
We begin by calculating the centre point of the string. To do this, we measure from the bottom point of the string to the top, divide by 2 and we mark this point on the string.
Using a sliding bevel, check the angle at the top of your stairs. Mark the angle on your string cladding panel and cut along the line.
Next, we measure the length of the first panel and cut it to size.
To get the height to cut the string, clamp it in place, draw a line on the back side and cut along the line.
It’s the same process for the bottom panel as it was for the top: first, we find the angle and cut it, then we cut it to length, then height (this time, leave it ~15 mm longer than required and we’ll trim it later).
Now that we have both panels cut to size, clamp them in place (bottom one first). They will overlap in the middle. We’ll use the top one to mark the bottom panel for an exact joint.
Whenever you are happy with how they fit, go ahead and install them. We are going to use some polymer adhesive and secure them in place with some brads.
Use the remaining parts of the stair cladding panels to finish up your staircase and you are done. See you later!
