  • Who, oh who will save us all from Mary Poppins - seen here in blackface, mocking the indigenous Hottentots, when the approved dialog should have read, “people will think we’re a bunch of Khoekhoe, the indigenous nomadic pastoralists in South Africa.” There are no ‘Hottentots’ to protest the use of the word Hottentot, but there ARE Progressives, people whose lifestyle can best be summed up as “ashamed of nothing and offended by everything.”

I was going to say that I would be happy to see warnings like that. It would be a good signal that the content inside the movie is rotten.
However, I see and buy so few movies now that it wouldn't really impact me. I assume every movie is filled with propagandistic garbage and avoid them all with rare exceptions.

A chimmey sweep was a tough dirty and neccecary profession in the period "Mary Poppins" took place.I was lucky to have seen it in its first release in 1964. The other thing is that people who were not even born yet or had any career in Hollywood spouted off what a despicable human being Walt Disney was. A well-known antisemite according to some people who was not even born when Walt died. The Shulman Brothers that wrote a good deal of the music for the Post War Disney movies and was loyal to Walt till he died. Richard B. would not have stayed if that was the case. Just lible coming from people who will never get called on it or even pay a price. Feed the Birds will be in my head for the next few months. Mary Poppins is a crowning achievement of Walt's storied career. And that pisses the left off to no end.

Hottentot was never a derogatory term. It is short for the German word hottentotten which means a stutter, click or sound-type speech. It was used to describe the Khoihoi tribe of Africa bc of the "click-like" language they spoke.
To identify or say you may be mistaken for one of a group of people by virtue of a characteristic, is much like saying... "you have eyes like an Asian." It's not racist or cruel, it's just making a visual comparison.

When my kids were little I was going through old storybooks that my mom had brought over and among them I found a golden book with Mary Poppins in it that was incredibly racist by modern standards. Mary Poppins takes the two kids, Jane and her brother on a journey around the world. They visit different countries and cultures the world around and play with children in those lands. They visit Africa where the African mother actually declares the kids are too pale and says that Mary Poppins should put some shoe polish on them. In America they play with Indian children running through the trees. In China they bow like an old meet there. The intent of the story was obviously to introduce children to families and children from other lands. In the era the book was written, it is actually quite respectful in that Mary is well-regarded by everyone she meets and everyone is happy to greet the children, but the 'stereotype' aspect of the people they meet would be horrendous today.
I could not find any images of this book online and I'm tempted to try to preserve it since it's a relic from another time and amuses me.

One month later we went to the drive-in and watched "Goldfinger". Also that year, we watched "7 Faces of Dr. Lao", with Tony Randall playing multiple roles including the titular Chinese man. I still remember thinking that that was a very long movie, but not long after we watched "The Three Lives of Thomasina", which seemed to last forever. I think the last movie we went to see in a theater or drive-in that year was "The Incredible Mr. Limpet"

On one level, I can understand not having smoking in a WWII movie made today -- because then you'd either have to have actors smoking tobacco, or have them smoking herbal cigarettes (like in X-Files), but at some point, it just makes sense not to be bothered -- on another level, however, Disney's 101 Dalmations has a warning that it depicts smoking (and it also depicts a woman wanting to make a coat out of the skins of puppies, but yeah, smoking).
At what point do we just let the past be the past? Why do we need to put warning labels on every little thing? And even when you don't actually depict WWII soldiers *always* smoking, why not at least have them trade cigarettes, and light one off every once in a while, or even just have a cigarette smolder at the table?
(And I say this as someone who wants to say "Not everyone smoked in WWII! My Grandpa was a gunner on a bomber, and he was a Latter-day Saint!" but that's really the exception that proves the rule!)

It is entirely reasonable to evaluate anyone and everyone, from any and every period in history; through the lens of contemporary sociopolitical mores. Of course, the entire sociopolitical spectrum has license to make these evaluations, because "we" wouldn't want to be non-inclusive. Naturally, this means there is no one, in any period of history, whom anyone could possibly consider 'acceptable"; because someone, somewhere will dislike absolutely anything anyone ever said/did; but the alternative is to imagine that those sociopolitical mores evolve and reasonable people can make allowances for that. Who could possibly want that?
