    A couple other tips I learned:
    - Whenever a word ends in an 'o' (ex. "No"), pronounce it with a slight 'w' sound at the end.
    - When spelling words out with an 'or' in it, many of those words translate to have 'our' instead. (For example, favor -> favour, behavior -> behaviour, etc.)
    I'm American btw 😉

  • @cochranesimon
    @cochranesimon 5 лет назад +150

    As an English speaker, this started to get more interesting when you eventually got on to mentioning intonation. They rhythm and melody is essentially what regionalises us in the UK as I'm sure is the case in other countries. For those facing the north/south divide (a class distinction as much as anything) this is the area of focus they would need to place most of their time, I suspect. It is not enough to simply pronounce grass as 'grarss' as you outlined, it is the flow of the sentence and the weight given to words that will mark you out ultimately.

    I'm an English teacher and for the past few months, I've been trying to sound more British. The one time that I went to England I was told that my English was super American and I sort of liked it. But lately, I've been feeling such a connection to the UK for some reason that I don't know whatsoever, that I'm trying to change the way I sound. In my mind, when I'm thinking in English, I already sound British, but the hard part comes when I speak. The American accent just comes so naturally, it's annoying. So right now I'm trying to read everything out loud so I can force myself to speak with a British accent. It's been some difficult weeks trying to do that but I'm getting there...

    Your video is really interesting...the "Received English" is taught in the public schools. British English speakers are non-rhotic while American English "General American" or "Newscaster speech" is rhotic. However, New Yorkers and Bostonians generally are non-rhotic speakers...some southern accents are non-rhotic too. The original British Accent was close to Standard American rhotic speech. When the lower classes in England began to rise in status during the Industrial Revolution, they devised an accent that would make them sound more cultured which was the start of "Received Pronunciation". So the American accent is actually the older accent! You sound wonderful, btw. I was in broadcasting for a time, so I had to study and rid myself of my NY accent.

    • @lovecats_10-23

      You mean that Americans have been speaking with an older British English accent since the American Revolution? That’s brilliant! I read a book about how the expressions and phrases Americans have always used are in fact British slang. I’m American and anything that I learn about the history of British people, their language makes me giddy, and proud. British English is connected to American English language and are very similar. Am I missing something and saying that incorrectly? I read a book about Americans are not aware that they are not only speaking American English they’re speaking British English and using British slang. That just makes me feel better and quite chuffed. I subscribe to britbox and I have learned so much in 6 years from watching the shows EastEnders and Coronation Street. I’ve had a fondness for British language and slang for most of my life. I could share the shows I watched as a teenager, but it’d take up more space.

    This video is enormously helpful. I can finally take the piss out of my British friends. Thank you.
    There are always a few words that give me trouble, such as “that is all” and “brilliant”. There is something about words that end with or contain the letter “L”, as well as words that end with the letter “T” that are impossible for me to get out without sounding like I’m trying to be British... Any advice?
    (I was going to leave a comment about the frame of the mirror behind you making it look like you have horns, but it looks like someone already did that.)

      Zack Russel Right! Carriage instead of garage!? Carriage instead of car. Yes,I know, sounds odd at first but then I personally find American English illogical. A carriage on a train is a carriage in English, in American English it’s a car! I know! Flashlight makes laugh too, because you know, it doesn’t flash! In English it’s a torch! And some torches have a “flash” function! It makes them flash!

      I say mobile and phone hardly ever say cell phone. I usually say lift but occasionally say elevator. I always say bin and not trash. I always say garage never said carriage for a garage. I usually say desert but may also say pudding. Also biscuit are the ones that go in milk and stuff you know what a mean and cookies are the ones with chocolate chips in them ((I sometimes call cookies biscuits and biscuits cookies.)) I am british :P
