Maybe Hermit Purple just wants to protect its user the best it can? Similar to Star Pltatinum when it catches the bullet in the very first S.C. episode. I know, other stands can basically act on their own since they have bodies or are spiritual entities, but Hermit Purple could be driven by the same energy/force, which means that it also thrives to exist, whether it can actually benefit from that or just remains a "tool" in Joseph's hands.

Dio has no Hamon energy in him, if he had any he would've died, considering how destructive Hamon is for vampires (it's pretty much the same as a direct hit from sunlight). And yes, Iggy being able to replicate DIO's voice and appearence is a major plot hole too, as he was the only Crusader who never met DIO at any point in the story.

My big question for a while now is why did they not take Joseph to eat at Trattoria Trussardi? While it wouldn't have brought him back to his strength from parts 2 or 3, it would certainly have given him more vigor, fixed his cataracts, and possibly even given him the strength to walk or even fight. He wanted a vision of josuke, and he got important information that he would find pertinent to his interest in Josuke. There's never any real indication that he saw water necklace because of "White noise". He saw an immediate threat to someone he cared about.

Joseph didn't use Hermit Purple to find Kira because Hermit Purple sucks at finding things. He made spirit photos of DIO all the time and got nothing but him posing seductively in the darkness until he was right on his doorstep. Even then, he couldn't actually find the mansion DIO was in without Iggy accidentally coming across it. Similarly, at the start of Part 4, he tries to find Josuke with Hermit Purple, only to get a picture of Aqua Necklace instead. Jotaro has to go to personally look for Josuke and is surprised when he meets him because Hermit Purple doesn't give him any information on what Josuke looks like at all. Considering that Kira has his ghost dad trying to protect him for all of Part 4, it wouldn't be surprising if Joseph did indeed try to use Hermit Purple, only to get some pictures of an old man instead.

From the looks of it, in Jojo, a soul can leave before a body's "life" is actually gone. As in, the cells can actually remain living while the soul has left the body as seen with Joseph. Remember what Josuke did with his blood during the fight with Kira? He explains that the blood is part of him when it's within his body, but as soon as it leaves and hardens, it's just another object. We can assume that the same reasoning applies to Kira's nails. Joseph was in his 60's when he got Hermit Purple, when I'm guessing it was also the most powerful. Jotaro's time stopping ability only weakened because he doesn't use it anymore, with practice he could probably have re extended it's use. There have also been a lot of old ass characters with stands, I don't think age is a huge factor.

That's the only reason he came to Morioh. To use his Hermit Purple. He could've fail with it, he could've need a dozens of photos to be made (and given that he's old, it would be slow because he's tired quickly). Some of the photos would lead to filler stand user episodes. Some would be slight hints. All of it is better than the fact how they've found Kira in the first place. "Hey, that photo looks suspicious, I have a feeling that's probably Kira."
Their isn't a reason he came to Morioh, he claims he came to see Josuke in person. Jotaro thought he might be able to use him if does by using the wires. So no, Hermit Purple was never in the question for finding Kira because its already proven to not work.

There was another comment which Meti posted something about only targetting strong stand users and that's why Hermit Purple only saw Dio and not Enyaba or D'arby(s), but this is pretty bullshit since Kira, Okuyasu, and I'm pretty sure Koichi are more potent stand users than Angelo, but whatever.
I think there is a limit to what crazy Diamond can fix, he won't be able to fix Kira's nail clippings from over 15 years ago to find him because how can you fix something that's already basically dead. Freshly severed arms like are capable of being restored, but something that'll grow back naturally on it's own isn't

Well, Dio does have the body of Joseph's grandfather. Not to mention that Jonathan also had a stand similar to Hermit Purple, and Dio could use it a while after being attached to Jonathan's body.

Jonathan's body/or soul was alerting the joestar bloodline because DIO gained a stand but when he was defeated it stopped So she didn't lose it it just wasn't forcibly trying to awaken. Same with Josuke the only reason that he gains Crazy Diamond is because, later on he gained the 'Fighting Spirit/mental fortitude' to use it

Because she was not supposed to gain a stand, but DIO forced her to have one. Which caused her health to start self destructing similarly to stand arrow rejects. However the crusaders *were* worthy of having stands, so theirs didn't disappear, this includes Josuke after growing up. Meti made a video on it

Vozail Hamon only stunts aging if you use it consistently and train with it. After Battle Tendency, Joseph had no reason to use Hamon. As far as he knew, all the vampires were dead. Combine that with the fact that Joseph is ridiculously lazy, and he just plain stopped. His Hamon became a party trick at best.

Why didn't they just use Crazy Diamond to just pull Kira back to them like they did with Okyasu when he got screwed? They could have done that, activated Star Platinum and then raped him. Josuke can only make a object heal one way, he used it on the hand to track him because it was the only way to force Sheer Heart Attack away from them. To make it return to the original spot. He can't change the direction once its in motion.
My biggest gripe with 2 to 3 and 3 into 4 is just depowering. The previous main character always slacks off on their powers and is conveniently weaker than they were at the end of their series. This is worae from 2 to 3 because we know hamon could have kept him in prime of life for decades, but he just stopped using it.
It is explained pretty well that to maintain power and youth with Hamon requires extensive training and hard diet. Joseph is overly lazy and wouldn't find any reason to continue his training. Hell you could make a argument when he learned about DIO he began training again because he could use hamon against him (which he does try). There was a long time of peace between 2 to 3.
I'm not saying they don't give a reason, only that it always boils down to them not training/ keeping it up. Jotaro could have had a great reason he avoided using his time stop, but it was simply he didn't train. Instead of making them negligent why not say something like "time keeps moving for me, just not the world". Dio is an ageless monster so it wasn't an issue, but that's a great reason for Jotaro to be hesitant to use his power outside of life or death scenario.
uh... but it DID keep Joseph in the prime of his life for decades. He spends the entirety of Stardust Crusaders running, leaping, fighting and otherwise adventuring, often in extremely harsh environments, without ever slowing the other guys down. He was almost 70 when he did all that! Many people are lucky if they can even walk or go to the bathroom unassisted at that age! As an aside I don't think it's altogether fair to chalk up what decay did take place just to being "lazy". He built a real estate empire in New York that made him and his wife millionaires. Peak hamon mastery, judging by Lisa Lisa, Tonpetty and the like, involves nigh-continuous training on a daily basis, which is simply not possible for someone in a demanding business. "Sorry guys, I'm going to have to miss another apartment block auction, and the city council meeting - I need to go spend 36 hours climbing the giant pillar that shoots razor sharp jets of vegetable oil, again."

Supposedly, Jonathan's stand would have been a vine-like stand called The Passion so we can possibly assume that the stand Dio is using there is actually Jonathan's. Obviously this doesn't make too much sense because stands are linked to the soul and not the body, but that might indicate that Jonathan's soul is still present in the body and Dio's hijacked The Passion from him. There's some part 5 shenanigans that might lend credit to this idea, but it's absolutely not intentional on Araki's part even if it might make sense.

They don't even mention hermit purple travelling through electrical wires in the anime. That's likely why people assume spirit photography was the intended strategy.

Yeah Joseph never really mastered Hamon. It helped him to stay healthy but after beating Kars he probably didn't use it much or at all. He never had the discipline to become a master.

Like with the Hand, Stands have a tendency to be modled after their masters in some cases. Perhaps thats just a tie Kira really likes, so when he was stabbed by the arrow his stand based itself on the tie.
I'm just a tad late, but I believe Josuke couldn't use the fingernails to track down Kira because in a similar way that dried blood is no longer considered a part of you, the dead fingernail clippings probably aren't considered a part of him either.

Dio has no Hamon energy in him, if he had any he would've died, considering how destructive Hamon is for vampires (it's pretty much the same as a direct hit from sunlight). And yes, Iggy being able to replicate DIO's voice and appearence is a major plot hole too, as he was the only Crusader who never met DIO at any point in the story.

Ya I love me some Jojo, but honestly, it's not the most sound storywise. It's a helluva lot of fun to watch/read tho especially with all the different directions each Jojo's story takes. Though, there are actually some pretty cool symbolic uses of stands. I particularly like Koichi's evolution of Act 1 being the sound of Koichi's words, Act 2 being the effect of Koichi's words, and finally Act 3 being the weight of his words.

My big question for a while now is why did they not take Joseph to eat at Trattoria Trussardi? While it wouldn't have brought him back to his strength from parts 2 or 3, it would certainly have given him more vigor, fixed his cataracts, and possibly even given him the strength to walk or even fight. Joseph didn't use Hermit Purple to find Kira because Hermit Purple sucks at finding things. He made spirit photos of DIO all the time and got nothing but him posing seductively in the darkness until he was right on his doorstep. Even then, he couldn't actually find the mansion DIO was in without Iggy accidentally coming across it.
Similarly, at the start of Part 4, he tries to find Josuke with Hermit Purple, only to get a picture of Aqua Necklace instead. Jotaro has to go to personally look for Josuke and is surprised when he meets him because Hermit Purple doesn't give him any information on what Josuke looks like at all. Considering that Kira has his ghost dad trying to protect him for all of Part 4, it wouldn't be surprising if Joseph did indeed try to use Hermit Purple, only to get some pictures of an old man instead.

Remember what Josuke did with his blood during the fight with Kira? He explains that the blood is part of him when it's within his body, but as soon as it leaves and hardens, it's just another object. We can assume that the same reasoning applies to Kira's nails. At some point it becomes its own thing, and therefore can't return to Kira.

Joseph was in his 60's when he got Hermit Purple, when I'm guessing it was also the most powerful. Jotaro's time stopping ability only weakened because he doesn't use it anymore, with practice he could probably have re extended it's use. There have also been a lot of old ass characters with stands, I don't think age is a huge factor.

There's no "he can't use Hermit because he's too old", because he has tried to make photos of Josuke multiple times. It's not like it would kill him. The fact that he's old and not very accurate with the photos is a great explanation to why he wouldn't be able to find Kira with the very first image, but he still should try. That's the only reason he came to Morioh. To use his Hermit Purple. He could've fail with it, he could've need a dozens of photos to be made (and given that he's old, it would be slow because he's tired quickly). Some of the photos would lead to filler stand user episodes. Some would be slight hints.
All of it is better than the fact how they've found Kira in the first place. "Hey, that photo looks suspicious, I have a feeling that's probably Kira."
Their isn't a reason he came to Morioh, he claims he came to see Josuke in person. Jotaro thought he might be able to use him if does by using the wires. So no, Hermit Purple was never in the question for finding Kira because its already proven to not work.

Vozail Hamon only stunts aging if you use it consistently and train with it. After Battle Tendency, Joseph had no reason to use Hamon. As far as he knew, all the vampires were dead.

Very well thought out, you changed my mind on this completely.
My biggest gripe with 2 to 3 and 3 into 4 is just depowering.
The previous main character always slacks off on their powers and is conveniently weaker than they were at the end of their series. This is worae from 2 to 3 because we know hamon could have kept him in prime of life for decades, but he just stopped using it.
It is explained pretty well that to maintain power and youth with Hamon requires extensive training and hard diet. Joseph is overly lazy and wouldn't find any reason to continue his training. Hell you could make a argument when he learned about DIO he began training again because he could use hamon against him (which he does try). There was a long time of peace between 2 to 3.
I'm not saying they don't give a reason, only that it always boils down to them not training/ keeping it up. Jotaro could have had a great reason he avoided using his time stop, but it was simply he didn't train. Instead of making them negligent why not say something like "time keeps moving for me, just not the world". Dio is an ageless monster so it wasn't an issue, but that's a great reason for Jotaro to be hesitant to use his power outside of life or death scenario.

uh... but it DID keep Joseph in the prime of his life for decades. He spends the entirety of Stardust Crusaders running, leaping, fighting and otherwise adventuring, often in extremely harsh environments, without ever slowing the other guys down. He was almost 70 when he did all that! Many people are lucky if they can even walk or go to the bathroom unassisted at that age!
As an aside I don't think it's altogether fair to chalk up what decay did take place just to being "lazy". He built a real estate empire in New York that made him and his wife millionaires. Peak hamon mastery, judging by Lisa Lisa, Tonpetty and the like, involves nigh-continuous training on a daily basis, which is simply not possible for someone in a demanding business. "Sorry guys, I'm going to have to miss another apartment block auction, and the city council meeting - I need to go spend 36 hours climbing the giant pillar that shoots razor sharp jets of vegetable oil, again."

I always thought it was because they were *spirit* photos. So if they tried, they would just end up with pictures of regular old Kira, not Kawajiri Kira.
by that logic, in part 3 they would see phantom blood dio instead of jonathan's body dio.

@@jopover A good point for sure, but just to point out a thought: Dio was originally going to have every stand until Araki changed that idea, but we do still see him use a vine-like stand similar to hermit purple. Supposedly, Jonathan's stand would have been a vine-like stand called The Passion so we can possibly assume that the stand Dio is using there is actually Jonathan's. Obviously this doesn't make too much sense because stands are linked to the soul and not the body, but that might indicate that Jonathan's soul is still present in the body and Dio's hijacked The Passion from him.
There's some part 5 shenanigans that might lend credit to this idea, but it's absolutely not intentional on Araki's part even if it might make sense.

That was literally explained. Joseph stopped practicing Hamon after Part 2 cause he got lazy and found no point in it.

I think its implied that he stopped training his hamon powers. Which on one hand makes sense because its become irrelevant when compared to stands. But on the other hand it doesn't because it still has the benefit of maintaining your youth.

That's not an excuse as to why he didn't use Hermit Purple if he didn't fucking know that Kira's dad existed.
They don't even mention hermit purple travelling through electrical wires in the anime. That's likely why people assume spirit photography was the intended strategy.

Yeah Joseph never really mastered Hamon. It helped him to stay healthy but after beating Kars he probably didn't use it much or at all. He never had the discipline to become a master.
