- Join me as I venture into Phnom Penh's vibrant Central Market, a bustling hub of activity and a treasure trove of unique finds! 🎒
Day 50 of my 2023 backpacking adventure finds me at the iconic Central Market in Phnom Penh, where I embark on a leisurely day of exploration and rejuvenation. As a seasoned backpacker, I understand the importance of taking a break from the constant hustle and bustle of travel to recharge and indulge in some much-needed relaxation.
Navigating through the labyrinth of stalls within the Central Market, I embark on a quest to find a replacement for my trusty baseball cap, which has accompanied me through countless countries over the past two years. Amidst the array of offerings, I take my time to peruse and eventually discover the perfect replacement.
With my mission accomplished, I take a leisurely stroll through the market, soaking in the sights, sounds, and aromas of this bustling marketplace. Along the way, I indulge in some fresh fruit to enjoy back at the hostel, savoring the simple pleasures of life on the road.

i love camboadia
The thumbnail face is so funny 😂
Now that cap has got a peak mate 👀👍🏻😎
Proper peak:)
Yes I like the hat!! Good choice. So much “stuff”! I bet the tourists come with empty luggage I would! The money would be a problem for me to count the foreign currency quickly. Once on a Caribbean island I bought something and got change but got what they call “soft dollar” like limp and nobody wanted soft dollars. I was on a cruise ship and my soft dollars all 11 of them got promptly exchanged for hard dollars. 😂😂😂. They would outsmart me for sure. Great walk Stu. 👍🤩
I try to use the Cambodian money but everywhere quotes me US dollars :/ I’ve managed to use the calculator in my head quite well lol
You are good!! That was very smart dealing on your part! 👍
An idea for a new tradition, Stu. Get a new hat at the start of each backpacking trip, and retire it when you get back to your home base. #StuHatCollection =D
Now that’s an idea… I probably would have a collection of retired hats by the time I give up travelling and become a grown up :)
I like this idea
Think you have answered my question now,Think I was given bad infomation when I was in Cambodia about 20 years ago,Im sure I was told the Central Market was the Russian Market, going to ask if you have ventured to The Heart Of Darkness bar/club ,was a bit of a wild joint when I visited
Unfortunately my budget doesn’t get me out to the bars :/ It’s a bit tight at the moment!
The exchange rate has been the same since 1994 , 4000 Riel to $ 1
FYI - Visitors and foreign residents of Phnom Penh Cambodia should skip Central Market all together. Instead go to the Russian Market. The prices there are are substantially cheaper and less counterfeit products. At 17:00 , you buy a baseball cap for $3.50 after haggling At Russian Market, caps are $2-4 before haggling. Also, that vendor you bought the cap from is Vietnamese and not Khmer.
Thank you for your advice for anyone else who will be coming to Phnom Penh :)
Didnt it used to be called the Russian Market
No they're different sir
you need to take the label off the hat
Realised when I got back to the hostel! Ooops
Electronic goods in cambodian markets are all crap and only half decent if you buy from a brand shop.
I’ve learnt my lesson! The hard way :/
