Have you ever wanted to go backpacking and travel the world? I have and that's what I'm doing now. At the grand age of 55, I'm heading out into the big wide world for a year and will be bringing you with me to show you the sights and sounds of the different countries I will be exploring and hopefully encourage you to do the same.
Life is for living is the motto I live by and if you believe that backpacking is for the younger generation, then I totally disagree with you. There are more and more older backpackers travelling which is amazing, but still people of my generation are scared or apprehensive to get out there. I hope this RUclips channel will encourage you to follow in my footsteps and explore the world!
Along the way I will share the sights as I see them, give you tips of where to go and how to enjoy every second of this journey.

Kundasang - A Mountain Town in Borneo
I arrived in Kundasang on a whim, knowing absolutely nothing about this mountain town-turns out, it was a pleasant surprise! My guest house was a 25-minute walk from town, giving me plenty of time to soak in the stunning mountain views, lush greenery, and cool, fresh air that you just can’t get enough of.
Kundasang is famous across Borneo for its massive vegetable market, which was way bigger than I imagined. People come from miles around-even from Brunei-to shop for fresh produce, and after seeing the variety, I can see why!
A highlight of my visit was the Memorial Gardens, dedicated to the British and Australian soldiers who perished during the infamous Borneo Death Marches in WWII. As an...

Borneo Travel Day - Kota Kinabalu to Kundasang
Просмотров 1202 часа назад
It's time to leave the city of Kota Kinabalu and I did have a plan, half an hour before I was to leave but I changed it totally to go somewhere different! I had half an hour, to check if there was transport and if there was accommodation. Once I had that sorted out, it was to leap out into the Bornoe travel gods and help me on my way! I managed to find transport that was heading towards Ranau, ...
Amazing Kota Kinabalu in Malaysian Borneo.

Today was another fantastic adventure in Kota Kinabalu, Borneo! 🌟 I explored some truly incredible sights, starting with the Floating Mosque-one of the few mosques in the world that lets non-Muslims peek into the prayer room. Talk about a VIP tour! 🕌✨ I also checked out Borneo’s tallest buildings: the impressive new government structure and the iconic Twin Towers. I capped off the day with a st...
Exploring Kota Kinabalu: A Backpacker’s First Day in Malaysian Borneo

On my first full day in Kota Kinabalu, the largest city in Malaysian Borneo, I dove into the local sights right around my hostel. This vibrant city didn't disappoint! I started at the scenic Signal Hill, offering stunning views over the city, and then made my way to the lively Waterfront, where the energy of the city comes alive. As I walked through colorful buildings and peaceful streets, I di...
Kota Kinabalu, Borneo - First Impressions of the City
Просмотров 3029 часов назад
After barely catching a wink of sleep on my first night in Borneo, I dove straight into discovering Kota Kinabalu. My mission? To soak up the city’s vibe and find a new pair of flip flops-because my old ones have seen better days! The adventure began with a quick wander around the local area, catching the tail end of the famous Sunday Market (just my luck!). From the bustling streets and striki...
Philippines to Borneo - Travel Day as cheap as I can afford!
Просмотров 22612 часов назад
With my visa about to run out for The Philippines, it was time to start a new adventure in a new country. The route I was to take on my travel day was from Zamboanga City to Manila then finally flying into Kota Kinabalu. The journey started at 2 in the afternoon and finished at 3 in the morning. It was a long travel day with no sleep! The only surprise I had was landing in Kota Kinabula, which ...
Exploring Zamboanga City - Last Full Day in Philippines

Zamboanga City is one of The Philippines largest cities and it seemed perfect to end my month long journey around the country here. I spent the day exploring the culture, and history of Zamboanga City, along with walking the streets of the city, taking in the views. From Fort Pilar to Plaza Pershing to the City Hall, which I managed to go in and have a look around. An amazing, friendly City. #b...
Zamboanga City To Sandakan - Philippines to Borneo. Can it be done by Ferry?
Просмотров 27119 часов назад
With only 6 days left on my visa for the Philippines, I had to find out if there were any ferries heading out of The Philippines, going towards Borneo. I had done no research at all, except seeing a ferry line on a couple of maps heading that way. There was nothing online to give me any schedules or timetables of ferries leaving from the only port that I thought they were leaving from, Zamboang...

A Crazy Travel Day - Oslob to Dumaguete, Philippines.

Travel days for backpackers sometimes go so smooth and then you have days when it goes a bit crazy. I had to leave Oslob by bus, then onto the ferry and head over to Dumaguete, which was not my original plan. Thinking on my feet all the way, I eventually got to my hotel and crashed onto the bed! #oslob #dumaguete #travelday #backpacker I am an older backpacker travelling the world proving that ...
Oslob, Cebu Island - Philippines. 24 hours to explore
Просмотров 389День назад
Moving on from Cebu City, I headed to the town of Oslob. It was a 4 hour journey, to help cut down on an even longer journey. Although I had checked in the day before, I left exploring until the following day, even though I had 3 hours to check out of the hotel. From the Main Street of Oslob, to the ruins of Colonial Spanish times, it was a town that not many tourists go to, but should. #oslob ...

I arrived in Cebu City, Philippines, planning to stay for just two nights, and I quickly discovered that this city has so much to offer! The hostel I stayed at was not only amazing but also budget-friendly, making it a perfect base for my adventures. From discovering...
Tacloban to Cebu City - Travel Day
Просмотров 409День назад
After leaving Tacloban, I set off on the next leg of my journey towards Cebu City. My trip started with a cramped ride in a packed minibus, where I found myself squeezed into a tight corner until I finally arrived in Ormoc. From there, I searched for a ferry to take me across the water and found OceanJet, a 3-hour trip that would bring me closer to Cebu City. Just before boarding, I quickly boo...

I had an incredible day exploring Tacloban, a city rich in history and culture. Even better, I reunited with my friend Neil and his wife, Delia, whom I hadn't seen in over 20 years! They generously took me around to some of the city's top sights, including the serene Madonna of Japan and the fascinating Imelda Marcos Museum-both of which they hadn’t visited despite living in Tacloban for years....

Exploring Manila - Historical Old Town, a Hidden Gem
That's the way to ranau... U should go until ranau SPORT complex got very beautiful view on top of the hill and to ranau hot spring 😊
I can't believe they let someone like you return! Man you look like a bum, shave, you look like an undesirable person!!
This looks amazing, totally in the wild
The weather has been good to you these past few days, hope it continues. Quality hotel that.
Weather during rainy season is always a gamble! lol
Agreed it's such a breath of fresh air to see videos showing the raw real side of the Philippines.. Also until now,I had not realised how many islands the Philippines is made up of.
There are so many islands in the Philippines. Ferry companies must make a fortune!
nice city that, always like to catch a good sunset. Descent room for the money
I’ve not been that lucky with sunsets in the Philippines but this one was really good
Wow.... Excellent video 👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much 😀
funny stuff ruclips.net/video/WQeSLcUqD4A/видео.html haha. looks very chill there
The beach is very open and not controlled I’ve visited many times. That’s a defence system not a blockade. I’ve stayed at full moon on that beach line. Mui ne is tourist now I’m afraid. Hope you enjoyed mui ne back packers
I really enjoyed it :)
That mosque is amazing. So lucky to go inside, I love Islamic architecture, old & new. Fantastic!
Awesome stuff 👍
I watched the video right to the end waiting for you to find your perfect pair of flip-flops. But you never did! I hope you found some in the end!
I found them about an hour after I finished the video :) My feet are safe again lol
Excellent views of the mosque. Keep up the great work Stu!
Thanks mate
Thanks for this video. This town looks good for bicycling. If I lived in Cambodia do you know what town is safest for cycling ? I was in K. Kong in 2009.
Traffic and roads in Cambodia is probably not the best for cyclists but I reckon Battambang would be the best place. Small ish city but plenty of areas just outside that’s perfect for bicycles
You look homeless. Shave and avoid the drink.
Like what I see so far...phillipines was Dull compared to this. Look forward to more of Borneo.
Totally agree :)
Your right nothing like the Philippines
They do have plenty of chicken and rice shops :)
lovely meeting you at starbucks today 🥰 keep updating us your journey !!
Thank you. My journey will be long and adventurous :)
Beautiful place
So close to Philippines, yet traffic infrastructure seems much more friendly.
It’s bliss compared to Philippines :)
@@olderbackpacker Yes. Seems civilized.
Borneo is paradise have fun Stu 👍🏻 🇬🇧 ✈️
Thanks mate
Car boot sale
Ha ha
Welcome to kk
Thank you :)
Unlucky on your flip flops hunt 😊👍
Got some in the end :) yay
👍
Security is tight because the area is known for Islamic Terror attacks, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrorism_in_the_Philippines,
Wow! I felt really safe. Who would have thought!
Odd that no vendors were selling flip flops. Many tourists also seem about.
I did manage to find someone selling flip flops! Thank god :)
Need to check out the morning market or evening market.
I’m a Japanese who you met at the guesthouse, H-ostel in Bali And I was also in Kota Kinabalu 2 weeks ago I wanted to see you again coincidently🤣
I remember you :) I can’t believe that was nearly 10 months ago! You can message me on my instagram account. Link in the description.
It was good to see cities off the well worn, over beaten path...
It’s the way I like to travel :)
Looking forward to the next step of this amazing journey, Stu! My ass would've probably tried to sleep at the arrival airport :D
Too busy trying to stay awake at arrivals to fall asleep lol
west park was built on the old darchem plant which specialised in asbestos that hill with all the monuments is where the asbestos waste is
Wow
Enjoy sir while exploring in cebu New subscriber here... Godbless youre trip
Thank you :)
New adventure a waits
It certainly does!
Not even Germans ??
Exactly!!
Just wondering, you're internal flight back to Manila, did it drop you straight into terminal 3 ? Or did you have to change terminals. Also yes, if they ask are you an oap. You get priority.
The internal flight did get me into terminal 3, then I just climbed the stairs to departures. Very easy :)
@@olderbackpacker cheers mate, PA internal fly into T2 and cebgo into T1. Good to know when I go out there for Xmas. Pain in the ass changing terminals.
Wonder if they've ever had an International flight in or out of Zamboanga 'International' Airport?😂Always "Yes" if they ask are you senior citizen.I would have recommended you treat yourself to the Kenny Roger's Roasters Rib and Chicken platter.
I didn’t really check what flights they have but I don’t think there’s many! Kenny Rogers is the only place I didn’t try in Philippines :/
@@olderbackpacker I tried Kenny Rodgers over 20 years ago in Canada. The franchise has gone out of business in North America, but thrives in Asia.
Cannot beat Cairns, my favourite city in Australia.
Totally agree with you :)
China has a mission for world dominance. They are wrongfully occupying West Philippine sea and are obviously heading towards confrontation with U.S. in coming years.
I saw you last week at sacred heart plaza near in church hehe
Was I videoing when you saw me?
Looks fascinating
It’s a nice city :)
Lots of Muslim women with veils...
It has a big Muslim population here.
40% Muslims. Christians are decreasing in Zamboanga some are moving to the North.
Look forward to your plane trip and costs. 13 years ago I went to a travel agent in Canada and enquired about a travel brochure for Philippines. Found out there weren't any. No resort packages available. You are right. They sadly lack in tourism promotion in other countries, unlike Mexico as an example.
Sort of job I would love, tourism minister for Philippines. I’d probably bankrupt them ha ha
Well you gave it a good go but sea travel to and from the Philippines is basically a none starter! My background is similar to yours I finally retired end of May and September 4th I move permanently to the Philippines close to cebu so we just missed each other! Borneo next I’m looking forward to seeing that but take care !
Cebu will be a better destination in the Philippines. Good luck with your move :)
Bummer Stu but the adventure continues
It’s definitely going to continue :)
So how did you get entrance to the Philippines with the e travel bollocks? Entered 3 times from Europe since last November and it has changed every time???
I completed an online form at the Philippine border/customs at the airport on arrival through a QR code that was everywhere. Not the most straight forward thing I’ve done but went straight through.
all good my friend. U have to slow down, my plan is to get to Thailand be for you lol maybe meet up :)
When are you planning to be in Thailand?
@@olderbackpacker I don't have a date yet , still trying to sort out some stuff. it will be in 2-4 months I hope. Will be for long term
I’ve got 2 months in Borneo I reckon :)
Yes. Tawi-tawi would present you as pissibly a very real kidnap victim held for ransom. South Philippines is not a tourist destination.
So I’ve found out. Flying seems to be the right way to go :/
@@olderbackpacker you must have noticed you were only Caucasian in Zamboanga. Life survival.
Hard not to notice lol
Oh dear ....
I know :/
Sorry Stu I deleted my comment on kangaroos in Borneo it's Papa New Guinea
I did see your comment and I did google it. Seems there’s an Indonesian island just off the coast of Borneo that has marsupials, which I didn’t know about! So I might have to head there :)
How was the trip from Dumaguete this morning?
Long, tiring and very long! Too long. Have I mentioned that it was a long trip?
