I remember meeting Gaahl after Gorgoroth played a gig here in Ireland in 2005. I had turned 21 that weekend, and it was a pretty significant period of my life as my father had just been diagnosed with cancer. I ended up back at a local metal bar after the gig, chatting away with him, and remember being struck by how calm and affable he was. It was around the time a lot of eyes were on him in the media because of his assault charge and numerous other things, but he was very open and down to earth about it all, and wasn't taking any opportunities to dramatize any of it to his advantage. We went back to a party after that and drank some more beers, and I always remember that when we were parting ways he said that he hoped I had enjoyed my birthday and that my father would get well. An absolute gentleman. It's great to see him still going strong and pursuing what he loves. Gaahl - you're a hero!

It's nice to see him again. The vice video makes me laugh so hard. I don't care if he is gay or not he can do what he wants his music is so great . I also love wardruna.
It's really tough being gay. When I was in college, I started being very supportive of a friend who really, REALLY likes men. People who hated me spread rumors about me being gay for going to his parties and even today I hear crazy stories about orgies that (sadly) never happened at my place. After a few years, pretty much all the gays in my area had came out of the close with me, but each and every single one of them thought he was alone. If only they had all been honest to each other! If you're gay, come out ASAP. And if your family can't handle it, abandon them until they do.
Piggybacking your comment in case someone’s considering coming out: if you’re still living with unsupportive family don’t come out until you have somewhere to go. They might kick you out. As soon as you have a job and a place to live in don’t risk homelessness. After that, if they don’t want to be part of your life because you’re gay, you can tell them to kick rocks.
Gaahl (Kristian Eivind Espedal) is very respectable as a true norwegian black metal icon and deserves to be honored, loved and revered in all the black metal scene, regardless of what you personally think about gays. even Faust (drummer of Emperor) who murdered a gay man, was actually the first to support Gaahl when he came out and was open about this. Gaahl is a quite cold person and does not give 0 fucks about what bitch-ass trollers have to say.
If you haven't seen his art, it's worth a look. Somehow his paintings evoke the idea that he snatched an early 20th century expressionist vocabulary out of time and applied it to a postmodern feel. Very heady stuff if you're into art at all. I can't say enough how much I love this guy's work, whether it's his paintings, Gorgoroth, Gaahlswyrd, Trelldom...
Ghaal seems to actually be a down to earth kind of guy to me. I think he was honest in this interview and really open about his life. This is one of the best, if not the best interview I've seen with Ghaal. I was disappointed when he left Gorgoroth because I felt he gave the band a strong stage presence than what current line-up has. Since he's left, their music quality IMO has went down considerably and it's just not Gorgoroth to me. Also, as a straight man, Ghaal's coming out and admitting he's gay doesn't bother me whatsoever and for him to be who he is, to come out and openly admit his sexuality I'm sure was a difficult thing to do. Kudos to the guy for doing so. I look forward to hearing his latest work.
This video came to me on a strange day. After watching Lords of Chaos yesterday, I started to have doubts about one of the characters in the novel I'm writing. A gay death metal drummer. Perhaps he was not realistic? I was rethinking him. Then I saw this interview, and I felt happy. I was in metal in the 80:s and 90:s (writer and guitarist in Ice Age), and even if there were homophobic jokes, nobody cared. Our singer was afraid to come out, but that was never about other people being negative, that was because she needed a little time. Thanks for a very honest interview. I needed to hear those words today. I will not change my death metal character, he earned his way into the story!
I clicked on this expecting to see a pompous prick ... he wasn't. He was rather honest and put thought into the answers. Probably because the interviewer asked good questions and did his homework.
Ooookay, this might be a silly question, but why are so many comments so homophobic and/or sexist? Metal has grown beyond this tightmindedness; maybe the commentators below should do too.
What a wonderfully respectful & open interview... It really is a nice change to see something that doesn't drag up the stereotypical ''satanic black metal'' questions. Seeing a genuine interest of Gaahl as a person & not just an image is just excellent. Bravo, Metal Injection!
If satanic black metal artists don't want to be asked about their aesthetic, then they shouldn't put so much effort into it. Black metal is very often just hipster bullshit. Having a real sense of humor about it is the only way to justify dressing up like KISS and growling into the mic.
I worked with him on the last tour with Wyrd at our venue in germany. He is a great guy tbh and very professional. Great interview with some very good questions!
@@LordBungBung It seems you know him better than me. That is great! But what exactly do you mean by steal gorgoroth? As far as i know gorgoroth still sucks without him. Did i miss something?
I really wish people would focus more on his amazing dark art. He and his partner have a gallery of some amazing oil paintings and someone has to make it public one day.
As soon as he asked him about his artwork & how it impacted himself and helped discover about himself; you can tell Gaahl was absolutely set-back due to how great of a personal question that was. Not many people would ask things like that.. typically just generic title-catching, stereotypical questions. Good shit Frank. Hate that I'm years late.. I'm a hip-hop addict who happened to dive deep into metal when I was a teenager and I forgot completely how interesting a lot of these artists are, and remembering Gaahl from my teenage years automatically made me click this videos. Truly a fascinating interview. Pertinent, meaningful questions that brought out a very candid and surprisingly accessible side of Gaahl. Definitely an incredibly interesting man. Great work!
"Its the way the world has its own ideas but didnt metal." Pure truth. Russia, for example, is a very homophobic country. Therefore, the metal community is quite homophobic. I’ve seen so many male comments that “Gaal is fag, now it’s disgusting to listen to Gorgoroth” or “Why Faust hasn’t killed him yet.” Some went further: “yes, this is disgusting, but it doesn’t affect the music, so it’s kind of a don’t care.” So the Russian metal community isn’t from the most open communities. So sad for Russians like me.
Your right. His relationship with the adversary is on point. Being gay spits on God and the bible and is at peace with it. He even said "mankind is known to be narrow minded". Gaahl rules. Dont know if your making fun of him, but he is a genuine man who is happy
This is exactly the content I need in my recommended during Pride month 👌 great interview - kudos for being chilled and just letting him talk at his own pace instead of cutting from soundbyte to soundbyte without giving him time to elaborate.

@@RIUUI007 I think it's something to do with the old Roman/Latin alphabet. Look up old Roman plaques, they often use v instead of u. It's nice to see him again. The vice video makes me laugh so hard. I don't care if he is gay or not he can do what he wants his music is so great . I also love wardruna.
The interview: really nice, laid back, great questions asked
The title: gAahl's Gay GUys plEaSe CliCk
Swine - i appreciate your voice in second line
To be fair it worked
Worked on me 😄
Should the title talk about how nice the interviewer is?
Flippy :D
Being concerned with what you're family thinks is gay
I'm not gay but we'll said
I wish it was as simple as “abandon your family until they accept you.”
You're gay, just in denial.. 🤦♂️🤣🤦♂️
Frank is such a good interviewer. What a great job and it was very interesting to hear Ghaal's take on things.
Good to see Gaahl again,
One of my favorite musicians, glad to see him speak so openly and not as cryptic as he has before, really amazing guy!
I adore Gaahl. What a fucking legendary player in black metal. He will forever be considered one of the greatest.

How's that novel coming along?
@@anonymousgoat3669 Slowly. I need something to put a whip on my back.
I think this may be the first time I've seen this man smile
He actually smiles/laughs alot in interviews.
I clicked on this expecting to see a pompous prick ... he wasn't. He was rather honest and put thought into the answers. Probably because the interviewer asked good questions and did his homework.
Yeah. Agreed.
Ooookay, this might be a silly question, but why are so many comments so homophobic and/or sexist? Metal has grown beyond this tightmindedness; maybe the commentators below should do too.
That smile on the last question, Gaahl appreciated those interesting questions, very good interview and interviewer. Props!
What a fantastic interview, very respectful, great questions. This is how you do an interview!
8:29 Is when he was asked about being gay
I've seen this a dozen times already but I just love how easy and natural the atmosphere is. Great questions, great job!
Damn his moisturizer game is on point.
His moisturizer is actually in a pint.
It’s called...no sun exposure
@anonymous Haha, so original and funny.😐😑
@anonymous to the psych ward..
@anonymous I smell homophobia
its absurd how rarely he blinks
What a wonderfully respectful & open interview... It really is a nice change to see something that doesn't drag up the stereotypical ''satanic black metal'' questions. Seeing a genuine interest of Gaahl as a person & not just an image is just excellent. Bravo, Metal Injection!
If satanic black metal artists don't want to be asked about their aesthetic, then they shouldn't put so much effort into it. Black metal is very often just hipster bullshit. Having a real sense of humor about it is the only way to justify dressing up like KISS and growling into the mic.
Always love the energy this guy brings. Such a positive influence
Lol
Gaahl is one of the most scary gay person I have ever seen
Great timing. I was thinking of Gaahl and being gay in the Black metal scene. 🤘 and this video pops in!~ happy pride month Gaahl🖤
lol
Fine interview. Gaahl seems to be progressed a lot in his personality.
Just that, or you just saw more of Gaahl.
It's nice to see an actually good interview with Gaahl. He even seems confortable in here. Good job!
I worked with him on the last tour with Wyrd at our venue in germany. He is a great guy tbh and very professional. Great interview with some very good questions!
So professional he decides to steal Gorgoroth? Don't think so
@@LordBungBung It seems you know him better than me. That is great! But what exactly do you mean by steal gorgoroth? As far as i know gorgoroth still sucks without him. Did i miss something?
As in the "sips wine...satan interview," his leather slightly cracks upon subtle movements of his.
i think it was dark beer. Anyway cool dude
@@NeuralDagger yes here you are correct. I mean in his classic interview when he answers "SATAN."
I really wish people would focus more on his amazing dark art. He and his partner have a gallery of some amazing oil paintings and someone has to make it public one day.
Really? I didn't knew that, good to know!
Gaahl: "satan"
Vince Neil: "satin"
james martin hahahaha
Gaahl: Badass
Neil: Fatass
As soon as he asked him about his artwork & how it impacted himself and helped discover about himself; you can tell Gaahl was absolutely set-back due to how great of a personal question that was. Not many people would ask things like that.. typically just generic title-catching, stereotypical questions.
Good shit Frank. Hate that I'm years late.. I'm a hip-hop addict who happened to dive deep into metal when I was a teenager and I forgot completely how interesting a lot of these artists are, and remembering Gaahl from my teenage years automatically made me click this videos.
Much love to the metal community!
WTF Tucker Carlson got ousted for promoting book NIGHT IN ZAGREB by author Adam Medvidović that speaks of events that black metal community expects to happen. They all read that book it and like expect that to happen. Does anybody know anything about it?.......................................................................................................
Good interview Frank! It's amazing what good questions will pull out of an artist... -Dustin
Truly a fascinating interview. Pertinent, meaningful questions that brought out a very candid and surprisingly accessible side of Gaahl. Definitely an incredibly interesting man. Great work!
Sorv
I am also gay Let's chat with you?
I have to say that gaahl is always a pleasure to watch in interviews. You can see in his eyes he is on a whole different level of human thinking.
One of the best interviews I've recently seen. Well bloody done!

I am also gay Let's chat with you?
Never seen him so happy! Feels good man
"Its the way the world has its own ideas but didnt metal."
Pure truth.
So sad for Russians like me.
ctionsaveuseri why is it disgusting???? Disgusting is what Satan stands for. Think about it!!!

I have no words for this fantastic interview! Great job dude. And great words Gaahl, you are awesome!
He's actually so cute, specially when he smiles 🤘🏻😊
Awesome interviewer - it feels like a natural conversation in comparison to other interviews I've seen
His lover is Satan and they have been in a serious relationship for over 2000 years. Plot twist he Ghaal is a vampire 🧛♂️
Your right.
His relationship with the adversary is on point. Being gay spits on God and the bible and is at peace with it.
He even said "mankind is known to be narrow minded".
Gaahl rules.
Dont know if your making fun of him, but he is a genuine man who is happy
Never been a fan of his music but I still can't help but listen when he speaks. Maybe it's his demeanor. Such a chill dude.
Coolest dude ever. I know first hand...
@@metalheadmike774 no doubt here. Would love to meet the guy.
I’ll never forget him from that documentary.
“Where do you get your inspiration from?”
“Satan.”

"satan"...
What an amazing interview! He looks so... peaceful, I could dare say even happy (in his own way). I'm really glad to see him like this!
I went for a long drive today and listened and it's a fantastic album from beginning to end.
Great interview, absolutely loved it 💜
Greetings from Norway
I noticed his pint glass. Imagine him going to the bar and ordering a Guinness in that voice
This is exactly the content I need in my recommended during Pride month 👌 great interview - kudos for being chilled and just letting him talk at his own pace instead of cutting from soundbyte to soundbyte without giving him time to elaborate.
Such a great interview.
He's got a lot of courage...his sexuality is still very controversial in many countries and even dangerous in a few...he's got so many artistic gifts-awesome!
Great interview and interviewer, with respectful and interesting questions. Keep it up!
Gaahl seems weird without a wine glass.
Don't you mean WYRD?!!?!??!!
Gaahl has matured. Just like a good old red wine. Cheers, man.
One of the best interviewers I’ve seen
True artists evolve (and I don’t mean “trve”)
What's the deal with replacing u with a v anyway ?
I'd like to know :D
@@RIUUI007 I think it's something to do with the old Roman/Latin alphabet. Look up old Roman plaques, they often use v instead of u.
In this one plaque, they use the V to mean U, the V to actually mean V, and V is the Roman number 5 (here it's VII which is 7): roma.andreapollett.com/S1/ROMA-C41.JPG
And Latin is the language of those who crucified Jesus, so it is the second language of Black Metal... after English, of course, because that's the way to sell the most records.
Your absolutely right, but sometimes not for the better.
Wow I was nervously watching the whole thing expecting him to reject those questions but nope, he went ahead and answered them. Nice.
The fact he says it’s a difficult question is so exciting
Imagine Gahl and Abbath in the same interview 😅
Ugh, just Gaahl please. Abbath is annoying as hell
