Saw her perform just two weeks ago. She closed the show with this song and still introduces it as "David Letterman's favorite Christmas song." 81 years old. She knocked it out of the park, naturally.
As a Grinch when it comes to Christmas carols, this was always my one exception. I loved and looked forward to Darlene's annual performance. When we knew Dave was retiring, Darlene's final performance was the first time I truly realized the show was ending, and it felt like Dave did too.
It is great to see the progression from no strings and a small chorus to the extravagant productions in later years that Darlene and the song deserved.
@karenbeads And to see the warmth between her and Dave grow over the years. He went from respecting her talent to really caring about her. Those appearances helped to reinvigorate her career.
For a multitude of reasons, 'Late Night With David Letterman' has earned the descriptor- CLASSIC TV. The yearly tradition of featuring this song, and this singer, ladies and gentlemen, is one of those reasons. God Bless Dave & God Bless Darlene!
The true Queen of Christmas! I hope she gets to sing this song on a big TV show this year as well! Her voice is still amazing and she's been delivering for DECADES. Sing on beautiful, classy lady.
@@zachsmith3 I thought that was very well done, too. But what about the tempo? It sounded to me to be consistent all the way through. Did Paul and the drummer have that accurate a sense of tempo? Or did they use a metronome?
What an amazing accomplishment to seamlessly stitch together 21 years worth of music into such a wonderfully melodic compilation. I can't imagine the hours of work that went into creating this memory machine. Merry Christmas!!!
My allergies are terrible after watching this. I wish my dad were still around. This was our little tradition that we had for ourselves. He would have loved to have seen this.
All the late night shows took this week off and I remember Dave would have Darlene love usually on just a few days before Christmas. This mashup was wonderful. So glad for this RUclips channel. Sending love from Detroit.
Nice work on the editing. I know the key changed a couple times through the years and it blended right in. I've always appreciated the equal parts sincerity and over-the-top ridiculousness these annual performances took on. It's not Christmas until Darlene sings, Jay throws the football at the meatball and we hear the Lone Ranger story.
Paul's comment about the 1986 performance to Vanity Fair: " It’s just the four of us and my band, singing and playing. [We’re] singing the background ourselves and playing ourselves, but somehow, when she started to sing, there was the Wall of Sound. "- Paul "Shaffer, David Letterman’s bandleader and sidekick through three decades, could be forgiven for sounding a bit wistful. He was speaking to VF Hollywood in the days leading up to the Thursday night taping of the last performance of the best Christmas tradition on U.S. television. Sometime between midnight and 12:35 A.M. on Friday night/Saturday morning, Darlene Love will perform her 1963 song “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” on Late Show with David Letterman for the last time. She has sung it on the program nearly every year since 1986."
Even an agnostic like me cannot avoid shedding some tears remembering those beautiful Christmas shows with Jay Thomas, Paul Shaffer, Darlene Love and the Greatest David Letterman!!! From Argentina 🇦🇷 I wish very Happy Holidays for all the Letterman fans!!! 🎅 🎄🎆
My family & I used to love watching Darlene Love perform “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” on Letterman every year. It was one of our favorite Christmas traditions! Thanks for this! Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays!
My all time favorite Christmas Song. Because of David L, Darlene L has been part of my Holidays since 1986. So thankful. Merry Christmas everyone. A Savior has been given to us. ❤
"It doesn't seem like Christmas at all" until Darlene Love is belting this song out !!! The lights on the tree get brighter, the snow falls down, the bells ring louder.....it's just Darlene Love bringing vocal talent to pull it together!!
LOVE IT!, thank you! Always loved Darlene's Christmas song on Letterman over the years -- and love this supercut! You made my 2022 Christmas Season whole.
18 years of the blessings of Dave, Paul and Darlene leading into the holidays was joyous every year. Would wrap my three son's Christmas presents while watching and they were in bed. They are in their 30's now LOL. Miss Jay Thomas (RIP) and the quarterback challenge to hit the meatball off the tree and of course the Lone Ranger "best talk show story" of all time! Thanks for this super edit Letterman team!
I love this one, it's one of my top favorites. Makes me sing out loud, cheers me up, makes me nostalgic, and then makes me cry! So many emotions all rolled into 1.
Just Amazing! For 30 years, we could count on David Letterman and team to keep us entertained ... the Sonny & Cher reunion, Stupid Human Tricks, etc., ... and the Christmas Gift Tradition that was Darlene Love. ❤
They seemed to have pitched her up here in post production, I can't find a Letterman performance of her singing it in this key. She's done it in Bmaj and Cmaj on the Letterman episodes I've perused but this is in Dmaj. It does make it sound better.
who ever edited this together deserves an emmy
My compliments to the editor. To get all those clips to blend together is quite an accomplishment.
Amen!!!!!!
Its really amazing.
Maybe they used one audio track and then tried to synch the video from different years to that?
@@shostakovich99 Maybe, but that still ain't easy.
Absolutely classic. 🎄🎄🎄🎄.
It’s not Christmas til Darlene sings. I’m not crying, you’re crying.
Saw her perform just two weeks ago. She closed the show with this song and still introduces it as "David Letterman's favorite Christmas song." 81 years old. She knocked it out of the park, naturally.
That's awesome!
WOW!! Good for her still singing. and doing concerts. Sounds like she really puts on a good show.
For some reason I thought she had passed away. So happy to hear she is still killing it.
@@martina5296 I saw her a couple of years ago. The lady knows how to put on a show!
This is my Xmas queen x
It wasn’t and isn’t Christmas until Darlene Love sings this song.
Absolutely Right, Merry Christmas KW.
You can tell that Darlene put a lot of Love into this song.
She sounds like she could actually bring down the house.
So much energy, and such a beautiful woman she makes me feel like dancing at 68.
I miss this. It was as much of a Christmas tradition for me as it was for Dave.
Echoed sentiment.
Kimmel had Darlene and Paul on to do it this year. So great to see the tradition continuing.
It just wasn't Christmas until Dave welcomed Darlene to sing this song.
And, boy did she give a 'You're welcome!' performance.
@@dennismclaurin1487 Yes!
Agree!
Brings a lump to my throat every time
I was up in floods of😢 tears every time
Classic Television.
It was a personal Christmas tradition on mine to watch Darlene Love perform this song on Letterman each year. I really miss the show. :(
Never seen Dave hug anybody like that - actually touches me
The smooch from Paul is great! Darlene is an amazing woman. David and Paul are amazing talents in their own right.
I want to give this video a million likes🎉🎉🎉
Darlene Love + gently falling asbestos = Christmas YEAH!
As a Grinch when it comes to Christmas carols, this was always my one exception. I loved and looked forward to Darlene's annual performance. When we knew Dave was retiring, Darlene's final performance was the first time I truly realized the show was ending, and it felt like Dave did too.
Yup. Jay Thomas telling his Lone Ranger story and Darlene Love singing this song is all the Christmas I care for. RUclips lets it live every year.
So true, Jeremy.
Merry Christmas, regardless.
One of many reasons Dave’s show was so great. Miss it so much.
Period! And AMEN!!
Dave's genuine love and appreciation of Darlene melts my cynical heart.
Dave was great then
I miss this so much❤
For a multitude of reasons, 'Late Night With David Letterman' has earned the descriptor- CLASSIC TV. The yearly tradition of featuring this song, and this singer, ladies and gentlemen, is one of those reasons. God Bless Dave & God Bless Darlene!
This and Jay Thomas & Dave throwing footballs at a meatball on top of a Christmas tree were my favorite Christmas traditions.
And telling the Lone Ranger story!
Bringing Darlene back to us all is one of Dave and Paul's greatest TV achievements.
For me, Darlene Love is the real Queen of Christmas.
I always relished this annual Late Night/Late Show tradition. Thanks Dave, Darlene, musicians & crew for the wonderful memories!
The ever-passing moment. It was glorious.
I really do miss her appearances. Another tradition amongst many.
She's been singing the song on The View since Dave signed off.
Dave’s Christmas show with Darlene and Jay Thomas was always must see TV.
OMG Dave YOU HIT THIS ONE OUT OF THE PARK . Thanks for not letting us down this year of 2222
How fabulous to know this is still being shown and loved in 2222!!
A time traveller still using old internet😮
Boy do I miss the traditional performance of Darlene Love's Christmas hit on David Letterman. Those were the days my friend!
The true Queen of Christmas! I hope she gets to sing this song on a big TV show this year as well! Her voice is still amazing and she's been delivering for DECADES. Sing on beautiful, classy lady.
Darlene, Dave, and Paul, please please please come home to all of us who miss you. Merry Christmas!
It's pretty amazing she hasn't had to change the key as far as I know throughout her years. Just an incredibly powerful singer!
The editor used the sax solo to transition to when she DID change key. Clever
@@zachsmith3 I thought that was very well done, too. But what about the tempo? It sounded to me to be consistent all the way through. Did Paul and the drummer have that accurate a sense of tempo? Or did they use a metronome?
The true Queen Of Christmas ❤
She was just on GMA 3 weeks ago.
That gets the ol' yule log going.
What an amazing accomplishment to seamlessly stitch together 21 years worth of music into such a wonderfully melodic compilation. I can't imagine the hours of work that went into creating this memory machine. Merry Christmas!!!
Wow, they found a tempo and really stuck to it! And Darlene never failed, amazing, so good...
This supercut is the Christmas gift I didn’t know I needed.
My only complaint is that some of the splicing chops up some amazing piano from Paul
The supercut was incredible.
I was just thinking earlier today they should cut them all together. GREAT work!!!
Love ❤️ it! Miss it 😢
this never gets old, I cry every year watching Darlene Love sing this glorious song!
Darlene reigns queen! What a voice......no other like her.
My allergies are terrible after watching this. I wish my dad were still around. This was our little tradition that we had for ourselves. He would have loved to have seen this.
Her Christmas spirit should be good for what ails you.
I love these compilations, because I thought I was a big Letterman fan, but I'm realizing I missed a LOT of stuff over the years.
The beautiful and extraordinary Ms. Darlene Love. Song still brings tears to my eyes.
All the late night shows took this week off and I remember Dave would have Darlene love usually on just a few days before Christmas. This mashup was wonderful. So glad for this RUclips channel. Sending love from Detroit.
I enjoyed this almost as much as the piano player in the top left at 1:18
perfection
Paul servin' stronk muppet energy!

Still brings tears to my eyes every season. Darlene Love has amazing range and vocal control. Just a magnificent performer.
The TRUE queen of Christmas
What's left to say ... but straight to Favorites!
I agree… it’s not Christmas until Darlene sings!!! I thought I had seen them all !!! This was totally amazing. Thank you sooo much!!
My Mom and I watched this every year in the 90s. She loved Dave as she called him. RIP Mom. 1941-2016.
Dave and Darlene together each Christmas is a holiday tradition that I desperately miss. We can see how much he genuinely loves her!
I think the editor, as Dave would say of Darlene every year, "blew the lid off the dump!" What a treasure to have this!
Great memories Dave!
