    How amazing to see such a young Annia Hatch here competing for Cuba as Annia Portuondo... Crazy to think the journey that was still ahead of her at this point. Glad she got her Olympics and medals in the end!

      So that’s why she looked familiar!!

      @saragrant9749 Her story is really quite an amazing one when you think about it... She gets unfairly denied a chance to compete at the Olympics where she would have been a medal contender... Moves to USA to coach And decides at an almost unthinkable age at that time (23) to make a comeback during an era in which the sport's difficulty was advancing rapidly... She manages to make the Olympic Team in one of the strongest Federations in the world When they had an insane amount of depth. And then she wins 2 medals All the while overcoming a serious knee injury... Such an amazing story.. The 2001 through 2004 quadranium Will always be one of my favorite Despite the fact they lost team gold in Athens, because we got to see Annia Hatch and Mohini Bhardwaj show us some of the best comeback stories the sport has ever seen.

    Sheremeta was the one performing on floor during TO in 1996 during Shannon's beam. That 96 NBC coverage seared in my brain. Thank you for this.

    • @RizReyes

      It was during Shannon's UB during the all-around. Heheh I've also got that NBC coverage ingrained in my head. ruclips.net/video/3HzDV99VH7k/видео.htmlsi=WHdTVvdRH_iVEI8Y

    And people complain about the scoring today from the judges. This was so clearly, blatantly biased towards certain countries. Absolutely disgraceful that Khorkina won a gold on bars with that big an error.

    This uneven bars final was a farce. Khorkina should have been nowhere near the podium let alone the top of it. It can't feel like a victory to have botched a routine and come out on top...

    • @Tribute2the80s
      @Tribute2the80s  7 лет назад +4

      I mostly agree. However, in her defense, she did perform an actual skill during the error-part. A valid skill for that COP, at least. So, was it really a mistake?

    • @jfeathe1211
      @jfeathe1211 7 лет назад +4

      Tribute2the80s There is no arguing that it was as smooth as cover up as could be, and I doubt few people other than Khorkina could have pulled it off. However, my issue lies with the fact that the free hip circle went well below horizontal. I know judging was far more relaxed on body position deductions in the older codes, but I don't see how the skill wasn't severely deducted.

    • @rolandgreen7484
      @rolandgreen7484 6 лет назад +2

      It was still obviously a mistake as the pak salto landed far past where it should have. Moceanu did it the same way at the 96 Nationals and also covered it up yet got a huge deduction for it.

      @koolaidman6251 4 года назад +7

      I loves me some Khorkina, but COME ON the French girl clearly should have won! More difficulty plus she didn't make any errors. The non-Russian, non-US gymnasts always got screwed in the 90s.

    • @matthewhines9787
      @matthewhines9787 3 года назад

      @@Tribute2the80s It was a mistake, but not necessarily a strict deduction.

    Khorkina winning bars with a major error is a joke.

  • @JamesFrew1
    @JamesFrew1 5 лет назад +5

    Severino should have taken the title. If Dawes would have hit she would have won. Watching her always crying is so difficult. She left more world titles on the ground than any gymnast of her generation.
    Lol, Khorkina is hilarious. How can you not love her?

    • @saragrant9749
      @saragrant9749 Год назад +3

      How can you not love her? Easily, considering how nasty she was to her competitors, the judges and at times her own teammates throughout her career. She was iconic for two things- bars, and her bad attitude.

    • @plp666

      Severino was totally robbed! Outrageous really.

  • @danasuperstar
    @danasuperstar 7 лет назад +8

    How does Severino (with a full twisting release move) place behind Khorkina who had a huge error? LePennec did the same release move in '04 Olympics and won the gold. I know the codes are different but for such a hard move you'd think in earlier times ('96) it would be worth more than '04.

    • @Tribute2the80s
      @Tribute2the80s  7 лет назад +1

      I would say because skills only went up to E during this code of points. Thus, a piked Jaeger was worth the same as a Def. And since a skill like a Def is likely to incur more deductions...it sort of wasn't worth it to do a super-difficult skill.

    • @rolandgreen7484
      @rolandgreen7484 6 лет назад +2

      The 2004 field was the worst ever so a lot of gymnasts who wouldnt normally win golds or medals (eg- lepennec) did. Such as a gymnast like Carly Patterson (lol) winning the All Around, as if any other Olympics. Le Pennec also had both that skill and a double twisting double back dismount, the latter which Severino did not have.

    • @saragrant9749
      @saragrant9749 Год назад +1

      Reputation, that’s the exact reason. She won a lot of medals by that alone, not because she was better than others.

      Yes such as Miller's 2 undeserved world titles in 1993 and 1994, both farces. Gogean ad Lysenko both clearly should have beaten her in 93 due to her mistake on beam, and Milo and Kochetkova both should have clearly beaten her in 94.
