I have dealt with jet lag before, with a 7 hour difference. The way I did it was simple - don't sleep on my way to my destination: I stay awake during the whole trip and when I get there I wait until night comes. By that time I don't have trouble going to sleep and I just wake up the next morning with no issues whatsoever. Try this, if you have the endurance!
+Alienhos I do the same thing too and it works! For me it just seems like I went to bed really late instead of at the wrong time, by the time I wake up I might just be a bit drowsy, but no jet lag
+Bruno Esteves I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one using this technique! I also try to eat regularly and drink good amounts of fluid, that helps with keeping awake during the long trip.
+Michael Thiab Yeah, try to stay awake next time. In-flight movies and my own music with headphones sounds pretty nice. Of course, that might get you sleepy, so a hot cup of tea or coffee helps me quite a lot. P.S. Total travel(2 flights) was 9-10 hours in air.
I only have terrible jetlags when I travel east and when the time difference is at least a few hours. What works for me: stay hungry. You have two bio-clocks, the day/night one and the when-do-I-get-hungry one. By not eat (a lot) about 48 hours before you have your first breakfast at your destination you trick you body into thinking: hey a meal after a long time of eating nothing, it must be breakfast, so it must be morning. Works for me.
+TheDaringPastry1313 A shocking opinion, we know. Josh's statements do not necessarily represent the opinions of the show BrainStuff, its creators, or its parent company HowStuffWorks.
Hi I would like to request you for a video on "Why do we hear sound when we tear a paper? What happens to the molecules during the tear process?" Thank you
To keep it simple, when you rip paper or anything else, you're breaking the chemical bonds between particles. Bonds have an energy content, so when broken that energy gets released and is converted into heat and sound. The heat energy of course isn't in sufficient amounts for our fingers etc to feel it but it's there.
Jet lag with a 4 hour difference (west to east) and I just feel dead. My sinuses are congest , my ears are clogged , pressure in my eyes and I feel like if im coughing dust. I don't know if this is a part of jet lag , but I surely don't sleep well at night.
I go to Japan every year to see my cousin I recently went in spring and when I came back to the states it was awful one thing not to do is go to sleep right away...which I did when I got home and took a 5 hour nap...so one tip is to stay up
I did have jet lag when I went to Madrid Spain 🇪🇸 which we had to stop at London for about hour or so it was 19 hr flight plus wait to head over another airplane to Madrid which is hour so since Spain and New York is 6 hours difference so that was a struggle
One month ago I flew from Amsterdam (the Netherlands) to Phnom Penh (Cambodia) and I did just about everything... to make my jetlag even worse. A lot of parties, drinking and very little sleep made me extermely tired. During to the day I was running around, visiting touristy stuff and all that in a very hot climate. I was completely f*cked up for about 3 to 4 days, but after that I went back to normal! Thank god I'm not an eldery mouse, but a fit 24 year old guy, or else I would've been dead for sure :D
I find daylight helps me sleep and darkness gives me more energy, also coffee usually makes me sleepy. I will likely never set foot on a plane so I don't know if my vampiric symptoms would help prevent jet leg.
i had jet lag issues for over 6 months when i came from hawaii to tennessee...no matter if i took melatonin or any sleeping aid i was stuck on hawaii time zone sleeping cycle so i would fall asleep around 5-6am TN time & wake up around 2-3pm tn time...it frickin sucked but thankfully im back in hawaii & thats all over & done with
+george Henry yea man 6 months...i could take ambien or benadryl & i still wouldnt fall asleep...it was crazy as hell...or should i say it was hell...my gf hated it bcuz we never rilly spent any time together bcuz when i was up she was sleeping & vice versa
I had a bad jet lag after a month vacation in India and coming back to New Zealand with an 8 hour time difference..It took me almost a week to adjust with New Zealand time zone....
I have this, I've never experience something annoying like this before. Taking the plane from Mauritius to London then to Toronto Canada 2 times in 2 weeks. very tiring.
Had it really bad traveling from Vancouver to London - travelled through 8 time zones in 11 hours. For a few days after, just kept falling asleep at inappropriate times. Even threw up at one point, which apparently happens....!
Enjoyed the theatrical expressive orationship, very engaging and all the while superbly interesting. Thank you. Please do more videos, hope to see you on TV soon. New Science Guy.
I am not here to offer tips on how to prevent and or cure jetlag. I am here to offer a simple experiment all air travelers can perform before and during your air travels. Get a weight scale that will easily fit in your backpack. Take an inventory of the clothes and accessories youre wearing and weigh yourself at the airport terminal before you board your flight and write what you weighed so you dont forget. After the aircraft gets to its maximum altitude get your scale out and weigh yourself again and write what you weigh at that altitude. The premise or assessment here is that Earth's magnetic field is more dense at ground level and so people and objects weigh more at sea level and weigh less the higher we get because Earth's magnetic field becomes increasingly less dense the further away we get from Earth. So air travelers are experiencing only partial gravitational forces unlike the astronauts who experience zero gravity at the ISS. So i guess you could say air travelers are mini-astronauts or astronauts in training..So partial gravitational forces being experienced by air travelers may be the cause of jetlag.
I went to Korea and back to US after 2 weeks. I can fall asleep at a normal time after 1 week, but I always wake up after 4-5 hours. Now it has been two weeks, and I can at least fall back asleep when I wake up, but still super tired during the day due to bad quality sleep. jet lag is no joke!
When should you take the melatonin? If you're travelling to Central Europe from East Coast U.S. in the summer, do you take it at 3 PM to simulate 9PM in Europe, the time the sun sets? How many days in advance?
Minor mistake but blood clots from being immobile on a plane are in veins. They can end up in your lungs and cause death but they can't end up in your brain (stroke) as that is a separate (arterial) system. Unless you have a rare patent congenital heart defect into adulthood.
Aww sarks I fell asleep wen I got home & I've just woke up (10.30) im never gonna get back on sheduel at this rate 😖 don't worry about today! You feel the way you do & I feel the way I do & it's ok if we don't feel the same about certain things😘😘😘
I just came back from america and I stayed there for 3 weeks and though I have dance practice and im so so tired but i wanna go to dance so is it best if i should go or rest?
Going east is profoundly worse than west, London - San Francisco was fine but took a few days to recover but San Francisco - London was just vile. Biggest tip: When flying west stay awake the entire journey, when flying east sleep on the damn plane!
I experienced a painful jet leg coming back home. my eyes felt let someone jamming a spoon into my eyes. I was in the other side of the world so day and night is opposite
Anyone else watching this because they have jet lag? Yesterday my head got really sore after swimming with my friend we were in the changing room and I was like OMG MY HEAD IS KILLING ME 😵 my friends like: why... Me: idk :/ So later it kinda went back to normal until about 1am I walked outside of my room and I normally don't feel the cold but when I walked outside I was freezing... So that was temperature change and I legit never feel cold but that was freezing when it wasn't even that cold... So I woke up half way though the night at about 3:30am j felt like I was going to faint 😖 I almost fell over but I just tried to go back to sleep I woke up again about 9 and my head was killing me so I didn't feel like waking up.. Yea so I slept till 2:30pm here which was 9am in America which is where I just got back from.. My dad got home making jokes and I'm like: no dad I was up ages ago but my head is killing me 😲 he's like why didn't u phone me and I was like I can't because no calls since I didn't top up my phone yet :/ 🤕 yea so now I'm still just lying here because I don't have much energy and my head is really sore :/ it's 3:40pm...
Jet lags are the worst! I traveled to a country with a 7-hour time difference and when I get back, oh boy, my sleep is out of whack for almost a week (or a couple)!
Got this terrible jet lag when i got home back home in Italy from New York I slept 3 hours, been awake all night and in 3 hours school start and it's my final year So yeah pretty cool
a bit simplistic. you forget to mention the effects of low O2 pumped into air supply of cabin, higher radiation levels from the sun, airborn pathogens taxing the immune system, and audible disruptions which can be known to affect the brain negatively.
+Seth Hoffman Good question! Lots of blind people actually have trouble with their sleep cycles to begin with. It's called non-24-hour sleep-wake syndrome, and basically it means that your body adopts its own schedule, leading to insomnia at night and/or sleepiness during the day. So there's a decent chance that a blind person would already be receiving treatment to normalize their sleep cycle, like melatonin. They might be affected in different ways, though, and would still need to work to adjust their sleep cycle to the new time zone.
I heard that the reasons blood clots can form on planes in not from staying still for too long or being cramped but from the horrible air quality on planes :/

+Michael Thiab Landed in USA, actually, because it took were 2 flights in a row to get there.
Anyone else watching this during the night because they can’t get to sleep, because they have jet lag?
Me
Maybe
No I'm poor

having jetlag now at home, I slept so early and woke up super early, where is my routine!?!
so what you are saying is that death is worse than jet lag?
+TheDaringPastry1313 A shocking opinion, we know. Josh's statements do not necessarily represent the opinions of the show BrainStuff, its creators, or its parent company HowStuffWorks.
oh, i meant that as sarcasm lol.. im sorry if it came off as serious. My apologies
+TheDaringPastry1313 Oh no no! I was being sarcastic, too. ^_____^;; Apologies for the confusion!
+TheDaringPastry1313 Hilarious, both of you didn't get sarcasm!!! lol The thing is, I was confused too!!! lol
3 years later !!
Are you guys still confused?

I just figured out about jetlag is because I just came back from the Philippines and I slept for a day
Jet lag gets worse as you get older........a lot of things do I guess 😢
this man looks cool. and i have no reason why i think so...but he just looks cool

Me routinely sleeping with the light on: Jokes on you!

Dont worry guys your just lagging when you reach your designated time zone your brain will reconnect xD
I find daylight helps me sleep and darkness gives me more energy, also coffee usually makes me sleepy. I will likely never set foot on a plane so I don't know if my vampiric symptoms would help prevent jet leg.
I meant lag, not leg!
Jet leg? Like sea leg, but in the air?
Supercalifragilistic espinucleosis?

The audio sounded weird with this episode... don't what it is, but just a bit weird.
+PolarTrance Yeah, sounds like he's taking though a cardboard box. Not to mention, on a large dose of valium.
jetlag in my case started with acute vomiting and eventually red eyes for 5 minutes. that was scary
I have jet lag right now. We went on vacation to a time zone 12 hours behind for 3 weeks. It's been a week and I'm still not in sync
this is same thing you get at winter went it dark in the are body still want to sleep and not get in the morning.

MoanaOceanSparkle not jet lag
that has nothing to do with jet lag. go to the doctor. 🤦♂️
I'm experiencing the same thing rn and I just came back from my trip. Did you ever go to the doctors ?

a bit simplistic. you forget to mention the effects of low O2 pumped into air supply of cabin, higher radiation levels from the sun, airborn pathogens taxing the immune system, and audible disruptions which can be known to affect the brain negatively.
I’ve never had jet lag because the only place I travel to is from London to Hamburg and the time difference is small. 😛
So people who are blind may not be affected as much or at all?
+Seth Hoffman Good question! Lots of blind people actually have trouble with their sleep cycles to begin with. Seth Hoffman wow, you actually see our comments. +1 like my friend
I heard that the reasons blood clots can form on planes in not from staying still for too long or being cramped but from the horrible air quality on planes :/
I don't have the sleep routine whatsoever, my body will turn off and go to sleep mode when I'm so tired no matter what time and condition it is
Yah, it's Mr Valium!
How long would jetlag last?
I've travelled from US to Asia, plane departured at mid night, crossed about 12-13 timezones,
I'm experiencing weight loss, feeling vulnerable, and dizzy all the time, plus feeling detached from reality(speacially the first few days).
And it's been 12 days now, still feel ill.
went to the doctors, didn't found out any thing.
I am soo afraid that I am infected by something at the airport or early stage brain tumer right now.

Being a narcoleptic, I do strangely well with jet lag xD Still use it as an excuse though.
Or travel by Boat and/or train.
It's more relaxing and fun and won't screw up your body as it has plenty of time to readjust.
Today's world is in just to much of a rush.

I dont have problems of jet lag at all lol... I always sleep at diff timings. Sometimes I sleep at 6pm sometimes at 9pm sometimes all the way at 3 am. But I always try to wake up at 7am to 9am.
On days that I have school I usually go to sleep at 11pm and wake up at 7am. On weekends I go to sleep whenever (which is usually between 12am and 4am) and then I wake up at around 10am
hi
So what if you dont have a sleep cycle?
Yet the same phenomena does not exist for shift workers because you didn't get on a plane... according to employers who's workers are knackered by poor roster planning.
I’m still having jet lag, it’s been 3 days .-.
